Dolores O'Riordan was an expert in 'keening' which is a traditional Irish form of singing. She was also unusual in singing in her normal Limerick accent - a lot of Irish singers sing in a 'neutral' vaguely American accent but Dolores engraved her brogue on every word she sang.
Well. I think more accurately, it's called yodeling (very common across ... many folk traditions). Keening, from my understanding, is more of a genre of music. An Irish song of grievance, often sung with a lot of yodel.
Keening was a traditional form of mourning. It was a part of the traditional way of life of the rural , mostly remote native Irish language speaking areas. There were older women who were called "keeners" and would go to village wakes, as a group, and chant keens for the deceased. It is a long dead practice and has disappeared from modern Ireland. The only place you will get a hint of it is from some of the traditional "sean nos" singing in the Irish language in the Gaeltacht regions of the west of Ireland.
Love the drumming track on this. Not a boring standard riff. Fergal Lawler is such an intuitive drummer. RIP Dolores. This song has been in heaps of movies and shows. Most recently Yellowjackets. 18 year old fell in love. Didn't turn out well though. Most of the songs for this album and next were about the break-up. lol. Dolores incorporated a lot of primal vocals including monk chanting in her vocals. More Cranberries please. And Dolores also had two amazing solo albums too. The track "Loser" has one of the best put down lines in a song ever for me.
It has appeared in the films Mission: Impossible, You've Got Mail, Boys On The Side, The Next Karate Kid, Shot Through the Heart, and The Baby-Sitters Club. You almost couldn't go into a theater in the '90s without hearing this song! It also appeared in the TV series
This songs has been used in a lot of movies and TV shows: You've Got Mail, The Next Karate Kid, Mission:Impossible, Boys On The Side, My So Called Life, Beverly Hills 90210, Gossip Girl, JAG...
A special place in my heart for Dolores and the Cranberries. She had a way to reach to your soul like I never experienced from other artists. I recommend "Ode to my family" and "Linger".
The drumming on this song (and a lot of songs by them) is really good. Nothing crazy that he's doing, but everything is well placed, and it really adds to the the song.
There came so much over produced crap music from the 90s, this is not it. This song and everything Cranberries did still holds up so well. Glad you liked it.
This type of traditional vocal effect in singing is called "Keening" and it comes from Irish (celtic) music. You'll also hear it with Sinead O'Conner for example. You should listen to the Cranberries' 'Linger' next. Great track! I seem to remember you listened to the excellent "Nothing compares to you" from Sinead, "Mandika" would be a good next track from her
@@johnnie160 OK I'm happy to learn J_WAR. I'd read that it's a 'vocal style' that pretty unique to Ireland which is inspired by Keening. I have to agree that you don't hear vocal inflections similar to this elsewhere, but you do in Ireland and Irish folk. Sinead is the other example I give. So you're saying there's no connection to Keening? Is it just originating from Irish folk music?
@@JonseyWales yeah not a criticism. I’m Irish. Keening isn’t singing or music. It’s a solemn kind of wailing that the older women used to do at a funerals. It’s not music. Delores just used to sing like this and some people recently have likened it to keening. But keening doesn’t have a melody.
@@johnnie160 Ok thanks for that. I just absolutely love that type of vocal inflection in singing that's totally unique to Ireland. Delores of course is brilliant and unique but I hear it in other Irish singers (esp folk) and wondered how it developed. Respect Celtic brother😉
I've heard it's called keening, and is used in grieving. I'm not Irish( (I'm Finnish) But I've read that the rising notes that sound like almost yodeling, is keening.
I bought their "To the faithful departed" in 96 when I was in 5th grade. She had a celestial voice. My favorite. I was shocked when I heard about her death. I was jogging while listening to news. It was a very sad day for me.
This song has appeared in numerous movies and the TV shows 90210, Jag and My So-Called Life. It's also been used in countless TV commercials, including covers by artists like Haley Reinhart.
I love the Cranberries. Back in the 80's/90's, before a long road trip, I would buy a current CD, to listen to on the road. As a result, I have deja vu moments hearing this song, as I was on a journey to see one my late fiancés best friends in Ottawa. 💖💖
It was used for the commercial promoting tourism in Ireland , it was surely used in movies too , but I personally have seen it many times in the Ireland tourism TV commercial.
She always sang with her own accent... "Never quoit as it seems"! I love this song - she sings the harmony, and the keening, and everything. Different, but familiar at the same time. The keening is an Irish thing - usually sung at wakes.

Need to watch this as the music to Limerick's historic All Ireland Senior Hurling Final win of 2018....absolutely incredible! Was played in Croke Park Dublin when Limerick defeated Galway to win the All Ireland Hurling Final for the first time after 45 long years of waiting...an incredible and emotional moment those of us priviliged to be there will never forget...
Yall heard it from many movies, TV shows, and commercials over the years lol. Love '90s alternative rock. Reminds me of my HS/college years back then. Great group. Sad that the singer has passed a few years ago, so young. Overdose/suicide. RIP.
LISTEN to those drums. When this song came on the radio while I was driving, I would listen to it even after I arrived, just to play air drums. Bless you, Fergal.❤
During a period known as 'the Troubles', an ethnonationalist conflict in Northern Ireland from the 1960s until 1998, more than 3,500 people died and tens of thousands were injured in the more than three decades of the complex and often brutal conflict. The IRA, which was devoted both to removing British forces from Northern Ireland and to unifying Ireland, killed almost 2,000 people during this time. During this time, over 10,000 bomb attacks were perpetrated in Northern Ireland, the Republic of Ireland and Great Britain, in an armed conflict fought between the Provisional IRA, the Ulster loyalist paramilitaries, and the British security forces. This song was written in response to the death of Johnathan Ball, 3, and Tim Parry, 12, who had been killed in the IRA bombing in Warrington, northwest England, when two devices hidden in litter bins were detonated. Ball died at the scene of the bombing as a result of his shrapnel-inflicted injuries and, five days later, Parry lost his life as a result of head injuries. 56 others were injured, some seriously. Parry died in his father's arms in Liverpool's Walton hospital. The two boys had gone shopping to buy Mother's Day cards on one of the town's busiest shopping streets that day.
It was on “the baby sitters club” movie in the 90s. I remember my girl cousins loved that movie. They were all like 12-14 at the time. I was probably 6 or something and always loved the song.
Saw them in a private showing at the China club in Manhattan NY city in the late 90s... like only 50 people there. Best show I've ever been to.and she sounds just like the record. Thanks for sharing Peace Its an Irish thing.. some kind of yodeling
This song has been part of many movie soundtracks, like Mission: Impossible, You've Got Mail, Boys On The Side, The Next Karate Kid, Shot Through the Heart, and The Baby-Sitters Club, the HBO serie Veneno.
I hope you have the actual video playing so you can see them. Dolores O'riordan has an angelic voice. There are some great singes but she has to be my favorite vocalist ever.
Dolores O'Riordan was an expert in 'keening' which is a traditional Irish form of singing. She was also unusual in singing in her normal Limerick accent - a lot of Irish singers sing in a 'neutral' vaguely American accent but Dolores engraved her brogue on every word she sang.

I mean, the double tracking of the vocals also helps a great deal to create that effect, it's not just her singing style alone
Man, she makes me melt with her beautiful soft voice!
This song was featured on the movie The Next Karate Kid with Hilary Swank 1994
Great band and song. She died way before her time.
The Voice Of An Angel...R.I.P. Dolores 🙏 ❤
She and Sinead really had that Irish wail inflection so present in their voices. So beautiful!

*Dreams__Linger__Zombie; are my three favorite Cranberries songs.* The song was in more than a dozen movies and near that on TV shows.
This song was also the opening for 'My So-Called Life' on MTV back in the day.
I just looove this song, Great rection We all need dreams in these times.
This is part of the soundtrack of my youth from the 90s. Feeling nostalgic right now.

My favorite song of all time
To be just for once to Ireland is a must! Best people ever and this voice stands, for me, for this brilliant nation!
The Cranberries came from Limerick (Ireland), near where we lived in Listowel.
The cranberries"linger" is outstandingly beautiful X :)
Their harmonies are angelic. Brings me instant emotions right to the core. Tears everytime!
You may recognize her voice from their song "Zombie" which got a lot of airplay.
First fleetwood mac and now this ❤
Since you seem to be on a "dream theme", check out "These Dreams" by Heart. And then there's "Your Wildest Dreams" by Moody Blues.
Also a song by Dream Theater
Love this song and her voice.
It's called "keening " it's old Irish mourning kind of singing which is sung for the person who has passed on to the other side. .
The chanting at the end reminded me of a song from the film Gladiator, titled "now we are free" sung by Lisa Gerrard. It just connects.
It was used for the commercial promoting tourism in Ireland , it was surely used in movies too , but I personally have seen it many times in the Ireland tourism TV commercial.
The song was used in one of the Mission Impossible films and in loads of adverts from Mazda cars to P&O Cruises and even the University of Phoenix !
Dolores's beautiful, lilting voice touched countless people. I miss her terribly.
When you’re gone, Ode to my family & Linger are also among they’re best songs 👌🏼
This song was played towards the end of the movie Mission Impossible with Tom Cruise. It plays when Ethan and Luther are talking at the cafe.
She always sang with her own accent... "Never quoit as it seems"! I love this song - she sings the harmony, and the keening, and everything. Different, but familiar at the same time.
The keening is an Irish thing - usually sung at wakes.
'You Got Mail' with Tom Hanks & Meg Ryan.
That Irish accent suits her music mixed in with that Gaelic vibe.
Sounds like she is also singing her own harmony as well.
She absolutely kills the double tracked vocals.

Plays several times on The Derry Girls on Netflix. Cranberries are from Ireland where the show is filmed. Very funny show.
Dolores O'Riordan's early death at the age of only 46 in 2018 was one of those shocking, unexpected deaths, like Carrie Fisher in 2016.
