  • #Ferrari308 #ClassicFerrari #Ferrari308Review Ferrari 308 QV GTS Euro Review! An Owner’s perspective!
    A couple of years ago we decided to go for something a little different in the garage and found this 1985 Ferrari 308 GTS Quattrovalvole Euro spec car locally. We have been getting to know this wonderful little car ever since. Ferraris are very different to the Porsches in our garage and a fun change of pace 😊 It is a good, solid car that combines amazing looks with fun and engaging performance and the wonderful Ferrari sound!
    In this video, we take you out for a ride to give you our impressions and then for a tour of the interior and engine bay. We hope to give you a perspective from an owner and not just someone who has stepped into the car for the first time. The 308 is a classic beauty that has the perfect balance of the angular shapes of the time but with the beautiful curves Pininfarina is so famous for. Performance is on a par with the era it was built and has held up really well over the years. Valuations have increased recently, but it is still quite accessible so if you are looking for an entry into the Ferrari brand, this is an excellent choice!
    We hope you enjoyed the video. If you did, please give it a “Thumbs up” and Subscribe to Heidi and Franny’s Garage for more videos to come. Also, click the little “Bell” by the Subscribe button to get notified when we release new videos - usually Saturday mornings.

    I owned a 308GTS QV for 22 years and drove 128,000 miles in it without one single breakdown or problem. I then owned a 550 GTB for 12 years and drove 112,000 miles in that without a single problem. Having warmed them up carefully thrashed them hard just like a superbike. Ferraris are by far the most reliable cars I have ever owned. The problem is the owners not the cars.

    • @HeidiandFranny

      This is great to hear! I have heard many other stories like that on F-Chat. I think the 308/328 is a basic, good design and not overstressed anywhere. I believe you are quite right that the major issues with these cars are more attributed to poor maintenance (possibly aided by difficulty in sourcing correct parts) than with inherent design/engineering. Funny though, I took the '86 Carrera out for a drive on Sunday to somewhere new closer to downtown and I picked it over the 308 (which could use a good run). I need to get past my own prejudices as well ;) Franny

      Franny, when I 24 I bought my first 308 to celebrate making a killing out of a book I wrote. I was always a very mechanical person so when the older owners told me how to treat it I listened hard. They told me, avoid second gear until you done 5 miles and never rev the engine over half revs until the oil temp gauge rises just past the first indicated number, then thrash the ass off it like you stole the sucker, and be sure to blip the throttle hard when you change down to match the revs just like a motorbike.
      I always followed that advice and never had a problem with either long term Ferrari 308 and 550. Problem is that most guys thrash the cars from cold to show off but don't/can't drive them hard enough after that. The exact opposite of what they like. Ferraris are very strong well designed cars, I have driven all over Europe sometimes on very rough dirt roads and stony high mountain passes, I have driven the 308 through flooded autostradas with the water half way up the doors, driven it through deep mud and snow. I have done it all in my 308 and it never missed a beat. Took the clutch out at 100, 000 miles and it miked up fine so we put it back. Took out the alternator and starter motor, put new brushes in them but we could have left them as they were. Pure engineering quality.

      That is awesome to hear! I really like the 308. I do have to admit I was very skeptical at first, but it is such a lovely car I had to move past that. I was positive it would be like a tired kit car - creeky, rattly and bangy. How could it ever be a solid at a German car?? Boy was I wrong! Ours is not completely sorted quite yet, but it still is a great drive and once I refresh the suspension I think it will be sublime. I need to work up the courage to drive it more. Thanks so much for your experience that is really encouraging. Our car had some very poor maintenance (bad belt change) in its past and was not well cared for. That has all changed. Thanks again! Franny

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  7 лет назад +2

      +RocketJohn I think the more videos you watch, the more you notice the production quality. I also think that when you get to that point you realize how many great RUclipsrs are out there and you don't want to have bad video, at least we didn't. We chose no video over bad. Several people do bad over none. There is no right answer. It takes a while to learn about the big names and hearing them give a shout out to the smaller fish in the pond (like our channel). We are small. I appreciate your enthusiasm and you showing our channel to your friends from out of state like Greg. It's always nice to hear from him too. Thanks John. You are a good friend. Heidi

Wouldn't it be cool to see a Pagani video where they go through all the cool buttons and switches? Or maybe a Koenigsegg? The 308 is still pretty cool inside I think. f

My heart wanted the 308 but my brain prevailed and I got a 2006 Sport Elise (with after market super charger and mods). Fantastically brilliant and quick car, but I still would love to have a 308 - still my favorite of all of the Ferraris.. I guess it was unfounded that I thought it would be prohibitively expensive. Great video Heidi and Franny. Believe it or not, I remember when I was a kid, the 246 Dino was priced new at $12,500 and the 911S was $8,500.. The Dino was the direct competition to the 911 but of course, 50% higher in price (The Daytona Spyder was $30,000).. I actually had a chance to spend time in a DIno.. Lots of fun to drive.. Not a lot of power, but I didn't care.. Just one of the most beautiful cars ever produced.

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  7 лет назад +1

      Totally agree about the Dino. Such a pretty car and I would say better looking than the E-Type ;) Seems like a comparable Ferrari is always half again as much as a Porchie... I guess the 308 would be best compared to an SC - Same size engine and injection. They are really so different I've always thought that the more complement each other than directly compete.

    Love the candid comprehensive review !! 308’s one of those cars where you can’t help but stare. If you’re at the beach and someone yells “ Shark” people stop and say “huh what where?? Same is true with this car. I would love to own one of these -looks like 84 and 85 are probably the best years.Can you get cheap Hagerty insurance for it? Your car looks incredibly clean

    Hi Heidi and Franny. Thanks for taking time to make such a detailed and educational video. I've been looking for an 84 or 85 308 Euro spec but fear I cannot register it in my home state, the People's Republic of California. :) CA has such tough smog regulations which prevents older cars from entering state lines. Any advice on what to look for if I find what I'm looking for outside of my state? I don't want to get caught in a situation where I purchase a 308 but can't register it here. I might even move just so I can own one! Haha.

    Nice informative video! I wanted a Dino 246GTS for a long time, when my buddy's Dad brought one back from Italy back in the 70's and rode in it. I thought to myself, I will have one of those someday. Somehow I ended up with 911's instead and that is where I've been ever since. I wish I had bought a Dino back when they were selling in the mid 20's. LOL
    I have however, recently been studying the F430 and am thinking that maybe, just maybe, I should pick up a nice clean F430 since they are affordable now, and I love the design. Love the sound of those flat-plane-crank engines too, I've been running them since the 70's!
    Good Luck!

      +mariodesmo glad you are here, since we have both 911s and Ferrari's. What 911 do you have? If you haven't checked out Daniel Hurlbert's RUclips channel, you should. He has an F430. Heidi

    • @mariodesmo
      @mariodesmo 7 лет назад

      Hi Heidi! enjoy your videos! And to answer your question, I'm actually "between Porsches" at the moment. LOL I've had 911's over the years, starting with a 1977 911S Targa(beautiful car) I bought in 78, then a 911SC Targa that I bought new and owned for many years. Then in the late 80's I also bought a 928 which was a lemon. It was plagued with electrical and electronics problems. Being an electrical engineer I thought I can fix it, well after a few years of constantly repairing it I sold it.
      I have been following Dan's channel, I really like his style and attitude about owning a Ferrari and cars in general. And that is how I've become interested in the F430! He really like driving his car and and is not afraid of working on them. I also follow Nick and Tui with his new 991S. I REALLY like his 991S so I've been looking at them as well. In fact I found a really good deal on a 991S locally; a beautiful GT Silver coupe with black over bordeaux interior with a manual gearbox. I really like the paddles on the PDK as well, I've driven one and was amazed at the shifting. Although I may have to go back and look at that 991S again this week since it's on sale! LOL

    Great video on the Ferrari! Did you guys get a new camera (or lens?)? Maybe it’s the beautiful rosa red paint, but the car really pops! In some shots where its by itself in the gravel road it almost looks like a super detailed die cast model that you zoomed in on. Really cool looking! This car has the coolest switches, seats, and shift gate!

      David Schmidt Thanks Dave! No, same cameras... That red really messes with the cameras though... Comes out almost fuchsia sometimes. I probably should look into color grading in post ;) Franny

    I once owned a 1978 GTS-308 and loved it and it drew a lot of attention. My license plate said RED-FUN and it was. I had it at 156 MPH only twice and it held the road without any problems. When I sold it, I had owned it for almost 21 years and sold it for the same price I bought it. It had 40K on the odometer. I do miss it and the only reason I sold it was because we thought we were going to build a home on a gravel road. We ended up building a home on a paved road in Central Oregon. These two ladies are great and did it the right way. Congratulation to both of them as they told it the way it really is about this Ferrari. .

    Hi Heidi and Franny! I know I’m a little late to the discussion, but I LOVE this car. You do such a great job showing all the features. I was wondering since this is a Euro spec car, why the speedometer is in MPH with smaller numbers for kilometers. Do you know what country it came from? Super interesting. Love it, thanks for the awesome tour!

    • @HeidiandFranny
      @HeidiandFranny  2 года назад +1

      Thanks so much! I'm guessing the speedo was replaced when the car was federalized. There were several changes... The country of origin was Germany. The tell there is the mesh covers inside the air scoops. It was required by German law. Infact, if you look at the prototype Porsche Boxster the air scoops are down low but we're moved way up on the released car. Porsche didn't want to put mesh over them so they moved them up. :)
