Which softbox do you think looks best?
i agree…the parabolic 👍
Chinese lantern gives a nice soft light with even modeling.
Yep
Awesome video, love how straight to the point the video is. Do you have a list of the brands or models you used?
I thought it was listed in the description! Ill fix it soon!
finally someone who actually shows how these things work instead of just talking about the theory without a chance of checking it. Beautifully as well!
Thanks a lot Floris!🙏🏼
clear explanation with good example. Thank you
Thanks!
These are the kind of videos that YT needs! Thanks! Loved it
Glad you say this man! I will make more of these :-)
The vid is so kind and gentle. Truly all I needed to know in 3mins+
Thanks a lot man! Glad you liked it
Between your voice and the music in the background, I am considering listening to this every day after work as it was extremely relaxing and de-stressing :)
That is among the most appreciated comments on this video. Cheers man!
I loved everything about this video. The music is appreciated. Super informative as well.
That is amazing to hear! Thanks so much🙌🙌
i believe is the first time i can understand side by side what every softbox was doing at once. Really interesting angle, i loved how you make complex concepts easy. Sub earned my brother
Thanks a lot man! This was exactly the angle of this video, break down stuff as easy as possible.
Thank you so much for this. This is so intelligent, concise and spectacularly helpful. You are the perfect kind of educator - straight forward and to the point. Thank you so so much.
Thanks so much! This is very nice to hear
These videos are great. Love the amount of detail 👌👌
Thanks so much Mikel!

this is the best video on softbox comparison and even on videography and lighting videos in general dude thank you so much
Thanks for this mate. Means a lot! :-)
Thank you so much for this video. As someone shooting on a BMPCC, it was incredibly helpful to see the side-by-side comparisons.
Pleasure is mine sir!🙏🏼

Thanks a lot Owen!
finally a good comparison with no frill! thank you very much, this was incredibly helpful!
Thanks a lot buddy!
This video is exactly what I needed. Thank you!
Cheers🙏🏼🙏🏼
3:47 + straight to the point = perfect!
🙏🏼🙏🏼🙏🏼
something I discovered that you should review: use a reflective umbrella or a soft box without the diffuser: it gives a very interesting mix of soft and shiny
Yesss finaly a video thats not 15 minutes! Great work, really helpful!!!
Cheers!
Thank you! Straight to point.
This was by far the best video explanation I got for the concept of softboxes
Thanks so much!
This was so incredibly useful brother, thank you
Thanks a lot mate!
i found you again!

Super fijne vibe heeft de video! Enorm chill! Overall een top video 👌🏼

Haha cheers buddy. The hair cut was an accident 😂
Happy new year to you too man!
Great comparison . Thanks for sharing
Cheers!
THIS VIDEO IS ONE OF THE AMAZING VIDEOS ON RUclips 💯🥂
Cheeeers dude!
This was one of the most useful softbox reviews I've seen. It was really clear and concise, overall great to watch. I'm really sold on the Nicefoto one, but I'm wondering if it'll be compatible with the amaran 200d. Thanks so much for this!
Thanks so much, Bo! Means a lot :-)
If the amaron features a bowens mount, it will!
Amazing video, thank you!!!🔥
Cheers!
Loved this video.
Thanks a lot!
This is great! Subscribed.
Thanks a lot man!🙏🙏
I love the effect that the parabolic gives. Thanks for the tips! Keep rocking
Thanks once again Ruben! Me too. Also, it creates a stunning eyelight!
@@SjoerdWess yes, it does. This morning working with lights, following step by step your other video to see if I can nail that awesome composition! (You’re not on Twitter?)
Nice mate! Send me a picture when you have the time! Im only on IG!
@@SjoerdWess I just did! Thanks a lot 🙏
maaaan where have u been all my life. subbed!!
Haha! Thanks bruh
This video deserves SO MUCH VIEWS!
Thanks a lot man. It will come. I have faith✌🏼 haha
Nice video. I do want to note that you can use just about any soft box that is double diffused and get the same results of the parabolic used. Once you add the diffusion to the soft box, that now becomes your actual light source. So you can get a more shallow soft box and save space compared to the parabolic.
Thanks for video. Most people do this type of comparison in front of a backdrop or in an environment with some backlight behind (usually not in a real-life scenario). It's hard to imagine different situations. Yours is clean! Still an idea: I just wanted to see a side-by-side comparison at the end finalize my thoughts. It could be perfect video with it. Cheers from Turkey!
Solid feedback! Thanks a lot, and cheers from the flattest country :-)
Subscribed! Keep those coming 😎
Thanks man! I will absolutely do that :-)
really, really nice. thank you!
Thank you so much Liz!😊
Amazing breakdown and demonstration.
Thanks alot Johnny. Appreciate it!
@@SjoerdWess looks like a lot of effort went into this. Gonna subscribe 🤙
You dont want to know. Im devoting my life to these videos lately, lol. Appreciate you’re joining the fam!
Great vid. Thanks for sharing
Thanks a lot
Amazing video
This is perfect
Cheers man!
This was a really nice video. Thanks for putting it together! And kudos on the short runtime. I'm going to check out your others now. :) I've been researching which type of parabolic and lantern to get and the options feel almost endless.
Thanks so much mate! I felt the same some time. I can highly suggest the godox lanterns. Such amazing quality. For softboxes its a bit different since godox hasn’t really entered the world of quick setup times lol
@@SjoerdWess Thanks for the advice. If you have the time for more... as for a parabolic softbox, I've narrowed it down to Aputure Dome light II or the min, versus a 35" nicefoto softbox. It's cheaper but the only downside seems to be the gel holder that Aputure has and it doesn't.
As for lanterns, I was looking at Godox and Aputure options. Debating whether to go with 26" or 47" options. I see the Godox is around 34". I assume larger is better if I want to try and use it for moonlight in films, but I could be wrong about that. Always trying to balance budget with quality.
Any thoughts on the parabolic softbox options and also the lantern options? THANKS so much! :D
I wasnt even aware of the gel filter on the Apurture! I usually just put the get on the front (need pretty big sheets tho). I feel the Nicefoto is pretty damn good what the price. That is one item that I use everyday, and I feel grateful for having!
About the lantern, mine is 65cm's. Which is plenty for most situations indoors. Moonlight recreation would mainly be hardlight, not diffused. But one can play around with that! I feel like the Godox is a very good value for money (and im not paid to say that).
@@SjoerdWess Awesome! Thanks so much for taking the time to answer me! It's super appreciated. I shared your channel earlier today. Keep up the great work!
Thanks a lot mate! If you even have more questions don’t be shy to ask them, love to help out ;-)
Awesome, informative video. Subscribed and liked.
Thanks a lot!🙏
The best 3 minutes ever.

Pleasure is mine!
Nice video 👌🏾
Thanks a lot man!
Man I love your videos they’re are just great. what software did you use to create the lighting scheme? Keep up the good work
Gideon! It's called Filmlightobjects, and it's done in Photoshop! Thanks for the compliments mate. Appreciate it!
Great video! Thanks for such a clear concise breakdown. Do you have any recommendations for hazers at all?
Definitely check the hazer I use here which is Stairville AFH600
dope
Thanks a lot Kell!
I like all the looks. Would be cool to have them all at the same time on the screen.
Good feedback!
Thank you for the video. Your no-nonsense/not wasting time approach is much appreciated.
A suggestion would be to show the different lights side-by-side.
My main problem is wearing glasses. I hate the reflection and looking for a softbox for the keylight that minimizes the reflection on the glasses.
Its all about the angle of light man. Any softbox will do, just the angle is important. Rather more angled away with a fill bounce from the other side to minimize contrast
@@SjoerdWess That's very good advice, thank you!
Pleasure!
Its like you read my mind. Might have to get that godox 👀
The godox lineup is getting so strong! The softboxes have some room for improvement in the setupspeed departement, but the light are amazing
This was so useful, I was thinking about buying one, because I want to start filming some reviews and the light in my apartment is pretty bad. But there are so many options out there, that it feels almost impossible to take the best decision 😅
I know what you mean man! I would get a parabolic with a grid. This is in my opinion the best option since you have more control over the spread since you can take the grid off! Also, check out the Godox SL60W. It's an amazing light for cheap. Get one of those, a cheap parabolic and a budget stand and you're ready to roll!
@@SjoerdWess Thank you so much for the advice man! I'll look into the Godox and see if I can find it in Romania or from Amazon
Sounds good mate! Feel free to contact me whenever you have questions!
@@SjoerdWess Thank you, I will!
Saw a recent video by an excellent pro photographer who showed that the deep, bulky parabolics are a complete waste of space. I've always though so too, but he published some good photos to prove it. A shallow circular softbox, with bowens mount, quick/popup deployment, and 60" diameter, is my current quest.
I feel like the flat octa box in this video gives me great results. If I had the smaller version, it would probably be equally as good as the parabolic.
The reason I like the parabolic dome, is that they are way more developed. The nicefoto for example, has a quick setup mecanism that you literary click in place in 4 seconds. No joke. The Godox Octa on the other hand is a true pain to fix, and even worse to break apart! That is worth a lot to me, since time is literary money on smaller set (where I use these softboxes).
Thank you. I learned a lot. I have same camera and lens and looking to pair with lighting. I’m looking at the Godox VL300 to mainly use as key light for narrative work, is it to powerful?
It will absolutely be powerful enough. You’ll probably stop it down to 30% most of the time haha
Appreciate the breakdown! I'm in the market for lightning kit for my setup and this is helpful. Is the music your own or do you aquire it online?
Niko! Thanks for watching man. Hoped this helped :-). My music I aquire through Artlist! If there you like to use that service too, you get 2 months free using the link in the description of this video!
Got yourself a new subscriber
Thanks dude!
@@SjoerdWess of course man... it's all you... thanks for useful contents!
cool man
Cheers
Okay, you REALLY should have put all the examples next to each at the end.
Ok
For this video and most other videos of this type do you use Mattebox or ND filters on your camera? Love the diffuse look
Usually yes. If I can control all the lights in the room, ND might not be necessary. Using a mattebox is nice to control flaring
Thanks for this very useful & informative video. If the rectangular softbox is mounted such that the longer dimension goes horizontally (basically rotated 90°), would the wrap-around of the light around the face be more gradual? If so, I expect the roll-off of light from top of person to bottom would then be much more dramatic.
You're correct! Thats how that softbox could be useful indeed!
Thank you a lot
Cheers mate
@@SjoerdWess I really loved the first soft boxes.
Damn, the image quality is awesome with all the options, but i prefer it with octabox too.
Did you use any plugin to reduce noise?
Thanks man! I used nothing for NR, but if I would I’d choose the buildin NR
Great content again !
Just wanted to know , if nicefoto 90cm para soft box paired with Godox SL60w , is the output enough ? Will it diffuse too much light output ?
Hi mate! Yep, I've been using the SL60 with the nicefoto for a longggg time and the output (for youtube settings) never crossed 60%! For more advanced lighting scenarios like replicating the sun, you'll want more power!
@@SjoerdWess Thats great! thanks mate.
will definitely get the nicefoto soon, its always a headache to use godox original softbox, especially bringing it out is a nightmare ! haha
keep it up! you're always improving!
Sweet man! Sounds good! Curious what you’ll make with it!
Awesome video! Just one question--what was the actual softbox that you used at 1:24? Was it also godox?
Aputure Dome II (90cm)
thank for the video Sjoerd. could i ask you which software you used for drawing the light designs?
Thanks man! This is photoshop + filmsetobjects
Great video! What are you using for haze?
Cheers mate! I use a 100 dolar hazer from a German webshop (Thomann) Starville AFH-600
@@SjoerdWess thanks man! I appreciate it!
Hey really love your content this is amazing. What is your preferred camera you use for videomaking , I'd love to have a conversation and maybe even collaborate on different ways in telling stories through film!
Hi man! Thanks a lot. Always good to hear this.
I am a huge fan of the blackmagic cameras. I believe they’re the absolute best money for quality. Period!
@@SjoerdWess I got the chance to use for a week and it was so great!
Its stunning right!
i like the cheap one if there was some flagging added to control the spill.
Agreed! Some black cloth and tape wouldve helped a lot :-)
Nice video. I have just one question which bother me: why did you use a ND on the camera? You master all the lighting so you can dim them if necessary in order to avoid the need of an ND, no? Do I miss something?
Light in the back wasn’t dimable ;-)
Awesome explanation. One question I chosed parabolic 90cm softbox for key light. What softbox do you suggest for fill and backlight? Also does back light need a softbox?
Backlight doesnt need it. Choice is yours! Full can be same softbox!
Thanks you so much. Just one question. For lighting a green screen with two cob lights. What type of soft box you recomends?
Rectengulars are good!
@@SjoerdWess Thanks
Nice video 👍
but you could end with a split screen with all of them to easier compare 😊
Thanks for the tip
@@SjoerdWess Your welcome, I know it is too late now, but maybe for future similar videos 😊
Absolutely man!
Hey man nice video, question, how did you make the little graphic of your room at 0:40 ? Thanks
A tool called filmsetobjects for Photoshop
@@SjoerdWess Thanks man!
is your sl 150 the bi color or the 5600 k? :) Great work!
5600 man! :-)
How do you keep the highlights from blowing out on the 3W Practical light on the shelf? When I try similar things, my light is always in the red, in false color.
It's actually clipping. But because I added a bit of haze, it's less noticable
At what percent was the vl150? :p I'm looking to see if i need v200 or vl150. (i'm going to make cinematic cooking video's) (i tought rectangle softbox for overhead with vl150 and second vl150 from side? thanks for the great video.
150 was at like 10%. Crazy strong lights!
hi! thx for the videos. 2 questions : Why ND if you can power down your light?
For this type of test, you could even play with Shutter Speed, even if the motion blurr would be off, do you agree?
You could! But I was working with the Ikea practical which was not dimable (to a lower degree). So the only way to get a good exposure that way was to ND the cam!
@@SjoerdWess ow, i didnt think about the practical. Thanks
@k1k13004 me neither, until I was building the set. Filmmaking is all about problem solving haha
Why didn't you use the tall rectangular softbox horizontally to get wraparound?
I dont know! I could have
