Rebel Moon is finally here, and HateWatchers is as well to bring you our movie review of this very SNYDER-Y, mishapen behemoth of a film. If you love Zack Snyder's brand of visual filmmaking, you MIGHT be ok. But if you're even a half-way discerning individual, Rebel Moon Part 1 is an absolute mess of stolen ideas smattered along an atrocious story shown to us almost entirely in slow-motion. Rebel Moon: A Child of Fire came at a very opportune time when disillusioned Star Wars fans are looking for a new fantasy IP to stick their teeth into. But Snyder and Netflix didn't just drop the ball here; they spiked it, popped it, and kicked it into the neighbor's yard. Rebel Moon is a MASSIVE missed opportunity and a hugely disappointing movie.

Bae Doona the Korean actress has had a great career in Kore Eda - Air Doll, Bong Joon Ho - The Host and Park Chan-wook - Sympathy for Mr Vengeance. Very ignorant to call her a knockoff.
It’s signature Snyder, slo-mo, buff guys, plucky heroines, action, blood and gore - loved it!

Sofia Boutella is the worst modern example of a model pretending to be an actress - and doing it badly because duh, she can't act.
The knockoff list was so accurate its scray. I spent most of the movie going oh shit is that…. But then going oh no it isnt

Anyone notice how the architecture of some of the buildings is far too "earthly"? The random, regular-ass, suburban cookie-cutter house in the middle of the field at 13:30 is just so bizarre to me.
Oh, and that ugly mountain and waterfall in the backdrop... What is going on?

I don't understand why they kinda gave each character a scene where we kinda saw the differences in their fighting styles, when at the end they all just fight using laser guns anyway 🤦
If they were going to rip 40k they could have at least made the sword lady like one of the assassins from that universe. She feels almost entirely useless for the coming conflict especially after almost losing to the spider lady.

I agree with the entire review.
The sexual assault of the girl was telegraphed very hard, so I knew that was coming. It's kind of an easy way to show who the bad guys are. The thing that really disturbed me about it though was how young the girl was. That seemed unnecessary.
The cantina sexual assault was very weird. I can respect the fact that he wanted to show a type of sexual assault that the audience wouldn't expect, but I felt like it didn't make a lot of sense. Why would you attack someone who didn't really look vulnerable? That's not how predators usually choose their prey.
Most of the derivative stuff didn't bother me, because I knew going in that this was a rejected Star Wars script. But including the light sabers and the bacta tank was a bit much. I can go along with a cantina scene because it's a good way to show us the variety of beings on the planet, but the sexual assault just seemed to be there to say, "See‽ Not the same!".
I agree with you that The Creator -- while not entirely original itself -- is a much better movie than Rebel Moon.

Basically this movie is Conan the barbarian, Star Wars , Gladiator and Star Trek the Borg , Harry Potter and Magnificent Seven all our favorite movies mixed up into one piece of Turd.

I've seen it, on small screen, and was really looking forward to it - in spite of the trepidation... which turned out to be totally justified. I was hoping for mystic Dune with extra Snyderisms a la Heavy Metal. What we got was a smash n grab from Battle Beyond the Stars, 7 Samurai, SW, and I could pick out bits and pieces from Trek, LOTR (seriously, mountain village scene is hyper sharp focus - like, "Siri, composite mountains above Edoras" - and everything else is not), Firefly, and some ghastly tropes along the way: "red man tames horse", "Irish scoundrel betrays heroes", "spider lady steals children", "hippogriff escapes Potter world".
It's like a fruit salad of great ingredients, then more and more stuff added - nuts, egg, refried beans, champagne and blended. That's something that is waaayy less than the sum of its parts. Puree.
I suspect all the epic stuff that Snyder touches on - the dynasty, the vengeance story, the powers etc - are things that he thinks are stunningly clever but will be revealed in good time. Well, no, Zack. No that clever (see: Dune, or any damned space opera), and it needs to help bind the story in the first freaking installment - not just Kora's tedious backstory and Sir Anthony Threepio's patchy history lessons.
Dare you to see the How the Movie was made on Star Wars(Hint: they are samurais in space) and the LOTR and every single movie really is based on something else.

I don't know, man... TLJ was bad, but at least it was gorgeous and competently made on a technical level. It even had a few original ideas scattered throughout, unlike Rebel Moon, which is almost completely derivative.

@@doc8013 Sure I can. There are a lot of awkward cuts, pretty awful CGI (except for the robot, Jimmy), obvious and distracting use of green screen, ugly backdrops, and to top it all off, the bizarre choice to use an anamorphic T 1. 5 camera lens.
@@HEARTS-OF-SPACE I haven't seen it yet, I'm just saying Snyder is a known technical wizard. Maybe I'll watch it and have the same complaints, it's just hard to believe right now based on his previous works. Although I will say AotD was a HUGE step down in terms of the technical craft that was on screen.
@@doc8013 Snyder is actually a terrible cinematographer. All of his movies where it was done well were done by someone else, and when he does it on his own it comes out really bad.

What was it that he approached Disney with??? What was his new grand idea for Star Wars? I didn’t see anything in part 1 that is different from what has been done in a Star Wars movie or show. Maybe part 2 contains something super special and we’ll all laugh at Disney for not immediately giving him a blank check. 🤷🏽♀️

Saw the header on Netflix and they looked too edgy so i thought: this is gonna be 💩
It was ok. No character development, backstory mostly given by narratives. All those people simply joining the team, just because. Wish there were more details. Could have been mini series
For me Science fiction is begins with the ships and they look crap.over the top evil baddies without any reason is poor.the only good character with promise is the robot .
I wasn't disapointed by Rebell Moon because It is as bad as any Zack Snyder movie can possibly be.
I will add that it took me 3 attempts to watch this thing. I was looking forward to it, I liked the trailer (I thought it was a Star Wars flic taking a new rebooted direction), but I was concerned about Zack directing it. I thought the very first scene was painful (Kora plowing the field at night, alone, with primitive tools... just look at the huge fields when the spaceships fly over them). I quickly started asking myself; is this a primitive civilization that never seen a spaceship? Is life bad on this dry rock, with Kora frustrated when hitting a egg shaped rock in the field? Even with the weirld Massive waterfall glued on to the mountain in the background. Why is the opening scene this long? Why is it in slowmotion? Why is the opening scene the opening scene? 😅
I tried to watch this last night and literally couldn’t finish it. Not only could I tell what was going to happen as the movie progressed but I started to know exactly when a slow motion scene was going to start. It felt like if someone created cocaine that you can only use by rubbing it on your eyeballs but it’s really bad coke. There’s the immediate high followed by an almost suicidal crash that makes you question why you should keep trying to breathe. This was horrifically bad

Belisarius is actually ripped off from history. (Rome reconquest) Imperium comes from Rome also and from Dune. But yeah they probably stole them from 40K which used them as an homage to history, etc.

My gf liked this movie and hates Star Wars so i dont know what that says. I just dont like slow motion. I was hoping with the Bourne movies and John Wick , we had gotten past it in action scenes

Does anyone else notice Snyders obsession with the “I’m gonna need a team” trope to. Like I’m justice league it made sense but army of the dead and now rebel moon and look I’m not trashing on the trope it can be fun but like in the context of the universe it doesn’t make sense. Like the plan from the get go is assemble a small team to defend the village seven samurai style with no credence given to finding an army or a larger force until the rebels are in front of them. Like even the rebel guy says that with all of their men attacking a dreadnought is suicide so why would the first plan be to assemble a small team with no plan of infiltration or anything. Especially with modern movies like they know being apart of a coherent military and not a small guerrilla force has its benefits right?

I got about half way through and lost interest. I left in playing on my TV while I browsed RUclips on my PC and sort of tuned in here and there.
The creator is part 2 to the golden child with Eddie Murphy.

Holy crap, normally I’d assume some degree of hyperbole at play, but this film really is that bad.
I’d like to see someone familiar with films of the genre sitting down and watching this with someone pausing at every minor plot detail and having them guess the outcome- I promise you, there would be a lot of 100% correct guesses.
And how the hell did he manage to make the worst choices for every choice he made. Done right, this could be One Piece in space - a complete mishmash of scifi tropes and anachronisms… and strange accents, for some reason.
Yeah, it's pretty bad. I imagine the hour-longer director cut will be better, but it will still not be a good movie. I'm amazed how his fans defend it though like it's some high art form he's brought to mankind.

As times pass, people will recognize how atrocious MoS was for Superman. I find it baffling how people watch that and think it was a good movie. Snyder is a poser, nothing more than a child-like mind and zero wit.

Agree with this video. I was looking forward to it and knew it was going to be a 7 samurai type story. How can you go wrong? Well this is how. No one cares about the town, the heros aren't earned or developed, there's no team, nothing works. Do spacemen really need grain, maybe have them mining some crystal that they need to power the ship. It was all so lazy.

It took me a few times to finish it. It was so damn boring and long. Not a single character in this got my attention. I'll take Dune and even current Star Wars over Rebel put me to sleep moon.
The fact that practically every shot was half out of focus was fundamentally the worst aspect of this movie. Couldnt get past the 40 minute mark.
And still it debuts at number one in 62 plus countries! Bravo Zack! Keep them coming! We’re here for you!
Can we just admit that Zack Snyder isn't that good at making movies? He's had some decent moments but overall his track record is not great. And there's often such a creepy sex-fiend vibe to his stuff....
