- Blank sheets of paper have become a symbol of protests in China against the country’s strict zero-Covid policy.
Large numbers of protesters have been holding up blank sheets of paper - a tactic to protest while avoiding censorship or arrest - resulting in some calling the demonstrations the “white paper revolution”, “blank sheet revolution” or “A4 revolution”.
The trend has its roots in the 2020 Hong Kong demonstrations, where locals held blank pieces of paper to protest against the city's new national security laws.

I spent many years in China . I can easily say that Chinese people are generally very friendly, kind,helpful and beautiful people . Additionally, it's because of CCP's extremely strict censorship. No matter what you write on the paper would be regarded as rebel behavior against their authority. Thus they choose to have nothing written on the paper, but everyone is clear about their anger.

Just incase your are not aware, white paper is from the unbelievable censorship on chinese social media. People literally cant say, comment or write anything critical about covid, war and politics.(you can only praise the government and say things positive about them.) Any voice that doubts the gov or the covid quarantine policy will be censored. So instead, people use blank paper. Even though it is written nothing on that, people know that what they are trying to say because they all suffer from those(no freedom of speech, inhumane covid policy, perma president). Everyone knows, they just cant say that. And it is really ironic for a police to arrest someone for holding a blank paper, implying they also know what they are trying to say.

If you research more on China, it did experimented democracy after 1911 revolution and clearly it failed. So did Soviets and other middle east nations. A country the size of China would probably progress as fast as India if it embraces democracy.

I live in china since 2018 for study purposes, here life is going hell, we are in isolation for the last 20 days, although they didn't find any covid cases for the last 2 months in my city. China is second the north Korea When comes to collecting information about any issue. And during the zero-covid policy, its a bit like 1984, Junior officer been authorized the right to determine which family should been quarantined, a nobody from party can take your freedom away by excuse of covid policy, and the corruption between the company doing covid test and local authority start to lie on covid test to earn more money. Thats way prople angry, and anyone questioning this issue was been silented in the Internet by censorship. All the uncover reports were been deleted by authority. All the video evidence, photos, articles were deleted by the government. Thats the point of "blank paper" because its a fact that there is nothing against government online.
Not trying to argue with a foreigner but the word for blank and white is not the same in Chinese. Blank=空 white=白。 空 means blank while 白 means white. When we say blank we tend to put these two words together it looks like this: 空白. The reason which is what you explained in your last sentence, that white also carries the meaning of "nothing."

I am living in Shanghai, which is the safest and most convenient city in the world. Although the Chinese government is still not doing a good job, look at the mass layoffs in the US, the soaring prices in the UK, and the war in Ukraine. No country is perfect, focus on your own life and don't judge what you don't know.

I am a student at that university in Chengdu. I witnessed this protest. Let me tell you what happened. What I'm saying is absolutely authentic.
The protest at my school begins with a moment of silence in memory of the victims in Xinjiang .However, it wasn't organized by students but by some people outside.
They entered our school and paid students to raise signs and slogans, which were printed with freedom and democracy...... 500 yuan (about 70 dollars) per person. Actually, we students didn't care about these at the time; we just wanted to express our sympathy to the victims.
Why am I sure they're from outside the school? Many of them have a Hong Kong accent. Our school doesn't recruit students in Hong Kong. And I promise any students who study in China won't speak Hong Kong-accented Mandarin.
If your "students didn't care about these", how could you say the protest was organized by the Hong Kong accent people outside school ?

The CCP was so desperate to control its citizens in 2019 that it plunged the entire world into a global pandemic. Now, the people are still pushing back. My best friend growing up and a girl that I recently dated were both Chinese-American, and even just from those experiences I can say that I have a huge amount of respect and admiration for their culture and a fascination with their history. I say keep it going and stay strong!

The CCP locked down parts of China in early 2020 but allowed people to travel outside China for Chinese New Year, all the while knowing that a pandemic had started. The CCP is responsible for widespread misery on a global scale.

It's because otherwise most of things you would write on the paper would get you in prison. It was used in Hong Kong but there people would still be sent to jail. Even accidentally, a T-shirt too blank could get you in trouble. Freedom to Hong Kong!
