  • (29 Apr 2014) Former Zimbabwean prime minister Morgan Tsvangirai's party, the Movement for Democratic Change (MDC), said on Tuesday that it had expelled its secretary-general, Tendai Biti.
Tsvangirai held a news conference at the opposition party's headquarters in Harare, two days after the MDC denied that he had been suspended as its leader.
Tsvangirai was reportedly suspended on Saturday in a meeting convened by Biti.
The following day, a party spokesman said the meeting had breached the party's constitution.
In Harare on Tuesday, Tsvangirai told reporters that "Biti and others who attended the unconstitutional ... meeting have expelled themselves in accordance with the constitution."
"The national council thanked them for the many years of service in the movement and wished them well in their new political endeavours," he added.
A party spokesman on Saturday said the MDC believed outside forces were working hard to destabilise the party.
Tsvangirai echoed those concerns on Tuesday.
"The intention is to hijack the people's movement," he said. "Unfortunately it all failed. So it is not the MDC, it is not Morgan Tsvangirai's leadership qualities."
The 62-year-old Tsvangirai has led the MDC since its formation in 1999.
