My parents dropped us off at the theater for this. Sean Astin and Josh Brolin are awesome. Before Samwise and Thanos they were the Goonies. 👍🏻😎
I loved sean astin and corey feldman as a kid. Toy Soldiers was another of Sean Astins i watched heaps as a kid.
This was my favourite childhood movie. My parents gave it to me on vhs for 8th bday and it just never got old. I genuinely don't think they make adventure movies like that anymore. Just pure fun for every age group.
They don’t make movies like in the 80’s in general any more. There’s plenty that seem dated but at the same time there’s a feel to 80’s movies that’s been lost, unfortunately, regardless of genre.
@@gaveup855 I agree to this and the original comment. There's a feel to 80s movies that is often lost now. Using practical effects and actual locations made movies more authentic. Nowadays with cgi amazing work can be produced but sometimes the magic isn't there.
@@peaceisnature describe that feeling if you can because I can’t quantify it, but regardless of genre there’s just something to say in the genre of 80’s style movies.
@@gaveup855 it’s simple. Movies back then touched your heart.
The 80s were the perfect age for movies. Movies before the 80s had stilted dialogue, the movies after squandered all their funding on special effects (to the point of post-millenium not paying a dime to writing a proper script),a nd then started sanititsing all fun and value out of them. There will never be better movies than the ones from the 80s.
PG used to mean something in the 80s. Just like you said, it's family friendly but it doesn't shy away from dark themes and tone, which could warrant "parental guidance "
To answer your question about whether parents were concerned at the beginning when the Fatelli brother is hanging in the cell that they may have chosen a movie that the kids shouldn't see...Well let me tell you, our parents in those days dropped us at the movie theater and didn't actually come in and watch with us. They basically left the mall to raise us. It was a wonderful time to be alive.
Yeah only the fittest or smartest survived. I recently learned that the 80s were the deadliest time period as far as serial killers go. Yet as a kid it seemed safe. We knew about stranger danger. Seems like kids these days arent as safety conscious.
@@dianedeck Well I didn't grow up in the USA and I don't know how many serial killeres were around in my country in the 80s but I didn't even dare to take a candy from a nice old lady on the bus because I had learned never to take candy from strangers. Back then there was also this urban legend spread among us about some strangers giving stickers to children to make them addicted to LSD (they had to be licked like stamps to become sticky). I heared it the first time in primary school and again in middle school. -On the other hand children were more free but also had to take more responsibility for them selves. Since we never had a car I had to take the bus alone to get from one end of our town to the other were our junior scout quarter was even in the evening and I always went to school by my self on puplic transport or on food. Turing our stay at our summer house in the country side my brother and his friend drove there bikes on the wood trails near by all day long, only coming home for meal times. No adult was with them. We didn't went to the movies alone untill middle school though. (I am Austrian just for orientation). For me it was sometimes a little bit too much responsibility.
Fun fact: the actress playing the Spanish maid is Cyndi Lauper's real mom! She's also in the music video "Girls Just Wanna Have Fun"
She is absolutely not Cyndi Lauper’s mom. The actress playing Rosita is Lupe Ontiveros who had 3 children, all were sons.
And she’s also the actress that
Killed Selena
@@llorona7847 Somebody LIED to me!
RIP, Richard Donner. He gave one of the funniest kids movies ever made!
There were talks of a Sequel, which will never happen, as the actors are happy with the movie and how it is.
Happy to hear the cast isn’t interested in a cash grab, and RIP!
@@nickreacts6394 oh. No, they all WANTED to be in it.. when Donner was gonna make it. The studio wasnt interested. And Corey Feldman will be in anything for money..which is apparent fron his appearances in Toxic Avenger 4 and Lost Boys 2
I'm hearing noises about a reboot. God I hope that doesn't happen. It's such a cynical development, all these needless cash grab reboots...
Sean Astin plays the real life Daniel "Rudy" Ruettiger in the movie Rudy. Definitely a good watch from the sports category.
5:50 - In this version of Astoria, Oregon, the lower-class part of town is known as the 'Goon-docks.' The kids from the upper-class neighborhoods refer to children that live in those areas as 'goonies.' It's not explained clearly in the movie. You have to put it together.
7:25 - The song playing here is the movie's theme song, 'The Goonies R Good Enough' by 80s pop sensation Cindy Lauper. The music video of the song is actually a two-parter that loosely reenacts the plot of the movie.
8:02- So between that last scene and this one is one of two well-known deleted scenes. Mikey and his posse stop at a convenience store where they run into Brand, local bully and son of the developer that plans to level their neighborhood. He takes the map from them and tries to burn it, but they save it in time. That's why if you look at the map in later scenes, the edges are burnt.
23:53 - They actually built a 100 foot section of water slide to film this scene. They made it seem longer by filming it from different angles. Story goes that the producers and crew would sneak onto the set after filming wrapped for the day and ride it.
24:00 - Those are the kid's actual reactions to seeing the ship for the first time. They were completely banned from the sound stage until it was time to film so their reactions would be as genuine as possible. This is also the location of the more notorious of the movie's two deleted scenes. As they approached the ship, the kids were attacked by a giant octopus. Data drives it away by cranking up his Walkman and shoving it in the octopus' beak. The scene was cut for time, but the editors accidentally left a reference to it in the final cut.
31:04 - This was Sean Astin's first major role. He had a number of smaller roles between here and Lord of the Rings, but he had one other major role, staring in the classic football movie Rudy. Several other notable cast members: Data was played by Ke Huy Kwan, who had previously played Short Round in Temple of Doom and recently played a major role in Everything Everywhere All At Once. Mouth was played by Corey Feldman.
The 80’s were a wild time for kid friendly movies.
As a kid I never understood why they called themselves Goonies but at one point someone makes reference to the Goondocks so it's really just a variation of the word Boonies...only you know, more trademarkable.
Yeah, the Goondocks is what their part of town is called. Probably started out a really upscale coastal neighborhood, but the town expanded away from it more and more, so it became thought of as boonies, and the people in newer parts of town would say stuff like “Oh, that’s the boonies where the goons live.” Something like that.
Sloth is a legend, I’m confident he could take Superman in a fight.
With the sheer power of his heart alone.
I watched this again for the first time since 2003 and it amazes me how much the 80's just didn't give a shit
Saw this in the theater as a kid. My siblings and I loved it so much we begged and saw it a second time immediately afterwards. 😅
This is one of the few movies that I will always watch, at any time, with anyone. It does not get old at all
The Goonies are called the Goonies because they all come from the "Goon Docks" neighborhood of Astoria, Oregon.
This is one of my favourite adventure movies. It does have a very Indiana Jones vibe at times, and I love that Data is the same actor who plays Short Round in Temple of Doom
Quick trivia fact: The actor playing the dead guy in the freezer was also in Jaws as a victim of the shark. He's the older guy in the boat who gets attacked in the pond when Mike Brody, one of the chief's sons, is in the water. Mike goes to the hospital for observation.
This movie is a classic. I love how it shows Astoria and parts of the Oregon coast. I live in Portland, Oregon, so I always love any movie that takes place here. I actually been to the county jail from the opening scene, that was fun, got some souvenirs. Of course, we couldn't go to the Goonies house though, the owners stopped allowing tours. I also remember the museum. I remember my grandfather driving my family and I down the road the Goonies did and saw the rock formations. The two souvenirs that I got was a replica of the skull key and the replica of the dubloon. Ah memories from my childhood. Also, great video to watch on my 20th birthday.
When I visited the NW coast (I'm from Germany) a couple years ago I made it a point on my list to visit this place. This is my favorite childhood movie and I love most movies and TV shows that are filmed in either Oregon or Washington because of it.
Fun fact: The director did not let any of the kids see the ship until that very moment because he wanted their reaction to be genuine.
I really enjoy your channel, Thor.
A few things I wasn't sure if you caught: the kids live in a poor part of Astoria called the Goondocks... hence The Goonies. Not sure if it's been mentioned elsewhere, but Data is also Shortround from Temple of Doom. You did catch the Gremlins reference. I can't wait for your reaction to that.
Lastly, there is a famous Octopus scene that was so bad that they finally cut it from the movie, but they left in the part at the end when the kids say the Octopus was the scariest part. I'll link the deleted scene below.
ruclips.net/video/8hXmqpExeZU/видео.html
Thank you for your channel, man! I really enjoy your reactions.
You might recognize Data. He also played Short Round (Indiana Jones' sidekick) in the Temple of Doom. He recently returned to acting to play the husband in "Everything, Everywhere, All At Once"
Ah yes, The classic friends get together and solve a mystery adventure movie🍿 it all started with them 😅❤️ it gives me a little Indiana Jones vibes. They are called goonies because they live by the Goon docks and are basically misfits/outcasts.
Monster Squad is another kids adventure movie somewhat similar to Goonies.
There was a Hardy Boys/Nancy Drew tv series that started in 1977 and ran for 3 Seasons. The Hardy boys were a hit but the Nancy Drew part wasn't as popular largely due to poor choices in actresses for her character imo.
Yup. Werewolves has balls to kick in. Just in case you ever encounter one on a scary night.
Dammit Thor, I had things to do - but one of my favourite reactors doing my favourite movie? Things can wait.
So apparently the kids didn't see the ship until they shot that scene, so their reactions to it are genuine.
I’m pretty sure it was mixed with a second take, and some of their language went rather beyond PG on the first take. 😄
"Goonie" was kind of a derogatory term that the upper class rich kids used to refer to the people who live on the Goon Docks, since in this movie it's the poorer part of Astoria.
And, you know, since it's Oregon, the poorer part still manages to look really nice.
Hi Thor! Nice choice of The Goonies, and awesome reaction!
A recommendation for you: Romancing the Stone (1984). It has that "energy" you were talking about. It was a big hit at the time, but has now been forgotten. Should make for a great reaction if you are game to give it a try.
Great choice!! 👍
Also side note Sean Astin was my 1st on screen crush (again I was 5) AND I also had a huge crush on Sam Wise in LOTR (I was raised on the books growing up) so when the trailer for Fellowship came out I screamed out loud to find that my childhood crush was playing my fictional crush... my heart lept for such perfect casting!!!
The town this movie is set in is a real town, Astoria Oregon.
The prison from the opening scene was converted into a film museum, and the house is still there!
If you're a Schwarzenegger fan at all, it was the same place they filmed Kindergarten Cop!
My 10 year old brother and I went to see this (I was 4)... after all the awesome things we had just seen, I came running home and told mom about the "mom's favorite piece" that fell off the statue. Mom was shocked, "What movie did I just let my kids see?!?!?!!?" lol The 80s were a glorious time to be a kid!
The Duffer Brothers of Stranger Things were huge fans of iconic 80’s movies. They pay homage to many in the series. There’s a great video of them talking about all of them.
Parker Stevenson and Shaun Cassidy played the Hardy boys in the television show. 😊 One of my favorite parts of this movie is the friendship between Chunk and Sloth ❤
I grew up 1 hour from where this whole movie was filmed (Astoria Oregon) I used to hangout at all the filming locations as a kid. I still go over there every once in a while for nostalgia.
I loved Anne Ramsey growing up, the villian lady with the hoarse voice. She passed away due to throat cancer 3 years after this was filmed.
Great video, brought back memories. 🙏
Just a little FYI: keep in mind Stranger Things is an homage to a lot of 80s films, so it's not unrealistic to think there are quite a few references of this movie in it.
They're called Goonies cause they all live in a part of town called the Goondocks. I think.
SHUT THE FRONT DOOR! I was not expecting this! Will this be up on Patreon soon? Goonies is not my favourite but it's still a movie that I always enjoyed as a kid. And "better than Stranger Things"?? Stranger Things wishes it could be this good haha. The group dynamic in Goonies and the authenticity is unmatched. I've not seen this as an adult so I'm excited for this PS: I wonder if you noticed that Data is the same kid from Indiana Jones 2 :)
Coming very soon to Patreon (sorry computer issues) but it should be up by tomorrow along with Gremlins
@@nickreacts6394 Ah ok, no rush! And my eyes lit up at seeing 'Gremlins'! Again, not my favourite, because I prefer Christmas films that make me feel like a cup of Santa's coco, not Red Bull lol...BUT that film is still special to me because I've been compared to Mogwai a few times in my life and Mogwai gives the film that cosy vibe. Although for you, I'm willing to bet your favourite part is the Gremlins, so I can't wait to see that reaction :)
I TOTALLY agree, everything they did from telling the story mainly from the kids perspective to the decade it's set in(The 80's) Stranger Things was going for a Goonies vibe hard core, no disrespect to 11 and the gang but nobody does it like #♥️TheGoonies!♥️
I'd say Stranger Things is very heavily inspired by The Goonies.
I saw this at the theater 9 times and even had a GOONIES t-shirt made. Really one that holds up and still is a joy to watch. Glad you liked it man!
You should watch the video commentary on the dvd. It has the actors reacting to the movie in real time. They’re enjoying it. Also check out Cyndi Lauper’s music video to her song in this movie. Some nice cameos.
Fun fact: Sean Astin calls Bran(Josh Brolin) by his real name when they’re arguing in the basement before they go underground. Sean Astin mentions it in the commentary version.
"The most dangerous J walking ever" She was in a cross walk.
I was 20 when this came out and a bunch of us saw it in the theater, it was so much fun! My partner and I have 9 kids, the first born in 1980 and the last in 2015, and we've enjoyed introducing all of them to Goonies and Labyrinth both. Goonies is definitely a family favorite and we watch it at least once a year.
BTW - Goonies call their gang that because they live in a poorer area of Astoria they call the Goon Docks.
I was 21 When it came But saw it years later great movie
I wore out multiple VHS of this as a kid. This movie is pure genius and enjoyment. The closest anyone has gotten to this is Super 8 and it's really just an homage to the 80s buddy adventure genre. Josh Brolin enjoys telling the story of how he snuck into the audition for this and ended up getting the part. Everyone of these kids just full sends their performance. they leave nothing behind and you absolutely believe them every step of the way.
The opening sequence of this film is flawless. Introduced to everyone, you know a little about them, the music is just so good.
This movie came out the year after Indiana Jones and the Temple of Doom, and was made as a kids Indiana Jones movie. To kind of connect them, the movie starred Ke Huy Quan, who played Short Round in Temple of Doom, playing Data in Goonies. And Data was trying to be James Bond, not Batman, FYI. Yeah this was a very cool movie to see on the big screen! Oh, and a bit of trivia, the kids were all banned from the pirate ship set until they were ready to shoot that scene, And when their characters first see the ship for the first time, it's also the first time the actors see it, and those were their actual first impressions of seeing it!
Interesting fact: My stepdad's monsterrr- I mean mother looked and acted EXACTLY like Mrs. Fertelli 😂😂😂
One of my favourite films growing up! I used to watch it on DVD all the time to the point I memorized the words to 'Good Enough' and would sing it any time it played.
You mentioned Temple of Doom, and Data is the same actor as Shortround. I grew up on this film. We saw it in the drive-in when I was 7 or so. It really informed my imaginative play.
These are the movies from my childhood! Please react to "Adventures in Babysitting" (1987)… similar type of movie, but there is something specific in the movie I think you'd like.
I saw this in theaters... I was 5. (Did you notice the actor that play Data also played Short Round in Temple of Doom. The actor didn't do anything else in front of the screen again until resecently he played the husband in Everything Everywhere All at Once... and kicked complete ass!
7:12 The song here is Cyndi Lauper's "Goonies 'R' Good Enough". The music video has more scenes that aren't in the movie and you can see some of the video playing on the TV.
My brother loved this film a lot as a kid that one of our first cats was named Willy after the pirate in this film.
Can’t wait to see your reaction to Gremlins and there is a sequel to Gremlins which is really good as well.
The kid that played Data recently made his comeback in "Everything, Everywhere, All at Once" and he was fantastic. It's an amazing film all around and I highly recommend it.
and had a touching reunion with Harrison Ford when they were both promoting different projects at the same place.
The Gremlins tie comes in because Spielberg and Columbus were involved in making both movies 😊 This is an old favorite of mine.
Back in my middle school days (2009-2012) if our band teacher didn’t have any lessons or if it was the day after our performances, she would either put on The Goonies, Dodgeball, Nightmare Before Christmas, or How the Grinch Stole Christmas for us in class. Every time I see this film I always think of me being in back in band class with my best friends and my now husband where we always quoted the film.. tbh we were the very few who appreciated the films shown lol
The director was pretty tired of the kids after wrapping so he looked forward to returning to his home in Hawaii. But Spielberg, I think, invited the whole cast without him knowing to Hawaii, so when he arrived, the cast met him at his home.
14:21 It's funny you mentioned Temple of Doom. The kid who played Data was the same one who was Short Round in that movie.
Mouth is played by Corey Feldman. His first movie was Goonies. He is also a Frog Brother in the Lost Boys.
Gremlins was his first real movie....came out a year before Goonies 🙂
No, actually Martin Sheen played Bobby Kennedy in a made-for-TV drama called The Missiles of October, about the Cuban Missile Crisis. William Devane played President John F. Kennedy. It was a very well-made drama, as I recall.
Martin Sheen played John F. Kennedy in the mini-series "Kennedy."
I loved this movie when I was a kid. I'm 42 now so this came out when I was still a kid, I was about 5 or 6 and kids back then had wild imaginations cause there was literally nothing keeping us indoors. Best times of my life were those summers.
Incredible 🎉
This is such a classic. So many young actors, now famous big time actors. This and the Sandlot were staples for movie night with the boys. Goonies never say die!
Never seen this movie before but this is a wonderful reaction from you, Thor! ✨🙌😫
Thank you so much! Really happy you checked this one out, it was so fun and wholesome!
It's hard to catch it in the movie but the area where they live is referred to as "the goon docks", this, the kids call themselves Goonies.
I was so excited to see you reacting to this movie I clapped my hands and went "yeeees!"
This was *the* childhood classic for me. All these years later, it's still a favorite and though I haven't seen it in years now, this brought back so many memories (all good ones). Sloth gets so happy when he's adopted by Chunk, his ears wiggle. So cute! I'm so happy you liked this one, and I can not wait for your reaction to the Gremlins movie! ^_^
Sean Astin is great in this, a lot of the emotional scenes are dominated by him and, like Samwise, Mikey gives some great motivational speeches.
Growing up I knew Sean Astin from this and from the movie Toy Soldiers, in which he plays a teenager. Wil Wheaton also stars in that one and my school friends and I really enjoyed it.
The ship IS the treasure!
Apparently, Martin Sheen has played both Robert F. Kennedy and John F. Kennedy in two different TV productions.
Nothing beats The Goonies in terms of just shear fun and adventure!
If you liked this then you REALLY need to watch eerie indiana. It was a series that i believe was cancelled after the first or second season but honestly it was pretty cool for its time.
Fantastic reaction!! 🤩🤩 One of my absolute favorite childhood movies.
Coincidentally I'm wearing my Gonnies Never Say Die t-shirt today. 🤣
Wow, this is a good one. Thanks a lot!
This movie is one of my most favorite movies from my childhood and I still love this movie.
Classic.
They are currently working on "Goonies 2" (projected release date 2027). Some of the original cast is already signed on for it and Cindy Lauper (who sang the theme song, "The Goonies are Good Enough") is also scheduled to appear.
A few extra tidbits:
Data was played by Ke Huy Quan who (interestingly enough since you mentioned it in this reaction) also played in an Indiana Jones movie. Temple of Doom as Short Round to be specific. He later retired from acting but has recently started up again.
Jake Fratelli was played by Robert Davi who's credits go back to 1977 and include "City Heat", "Die Hard", and "Licence to Kill".
Francis Fritelli was played by Joe Pantoliano (aka Joey Pants). He's been in too many to name but is well known for being in "The Matrix" and "La Bamba"
Mama Fritelli is played by Anne Ramsey (R.I.P.) best known as the title character in "Throw Mama from the Train" with Billy Crystal & Danny DeVito.
Chunk was Jeff Cohen who quit acting shortly after Goonies to concentrate on school. He became a very successful entertainment attorney in Las Angeles.
Finally Sloth was played by former NFL star defensive lineman John Matuszak (R.I.P.). He can also be seen in 1979s "North Dallas Forty" with Nick Nolte and Mac Davis.
Ke Hiy Quan was also the husband in everything everywhere and all at once.
Jeff Cohen got voted Homecoming king by promising to do the truffle shuffle at football games. He might have quit acting but he owned the character and milked it for everything he could.
It took me years to understand that "Goonies" referred to the kids since they lived on the Goon docks.
Chunk is so relatable, lol. I want some pizza and whipped cream.
You should watch The Monster Squad
I never noticed it when I was a kid watching this movie but I noticed later in adulthood that Corey Feldman who plays Mouth is wearing a Purple Rain T-shirt.
Gremlins would be a good movie to watch as it's a Christmas movie. Plus Corey Feldman is in it
I'm not totally sure what the actual source of the term "goonies" is, but I've always assumed it was a smash up of two words: Goobers and Loonies. He says that they're "goonies" because they're the rejects/outcasts of their peer group.
So, my guess is that bullies have called them "goonies" and they've subversively reclaimed that term in defiance and pride.
Great to see someone react to one of my cherished childhood favorites, btw!
The live or hang out in a part of Astoria called "goon docks", ergo "goonies"
It came from the name of their neighborhood in the movie: the Goondocks.
@@cloudyh6800 I think they named their neighbourhood the Goondocks after themselves doing a riff on the Boondocks.
Someone else has probably pointed this out, but Gremlins could be considered a Christmas movie as it takes place during the season and has several Christmas references.
Martin Sheen played Kennedy in The Missiles of October, as I recall. A good movie about the Cuban Missile Crisis.
The Goonies name is from the Goon Docks where they live which is being turned into a Country club.
Yes, this was a lot of fun in the theater. I went on my own the first few times, then began to drag some friends along. One of those fun, 80s family movies we grew up with. I was able to watch the same movie A LOT growing up because our small, one screen old time theater would show it twice a night and if you paid for the first viewing, the second was free. So in typical 80s style I'd pedal my bike up there, leave it laying outside and watch both showings. Good times. Great memories. 🐾🐾🍻
The kid who played Data, He also played as Short Round in Indiana Jones Temple Of Doom.
This is a childhood film of mine, it was just a really fun thing to watch
I had a problem with one of Chunk's lines.-"I smell Ice Cream." Chunk must had a highly developed sense of smell, because in general Ice Cream is not particularly fragrant. I believe it's because it's frozen it's particles don't move very fast, so the particles most likely would not hit your nostrils quickly and thus smell. In order to smell Ice cream you basically have to put your nose directly on it on possibly on the relatively porous cardboard that contains it.
This was definitely one of the many sources of inspiration for Stranger Things.
1 of my favorites when i lived in oregon i was like 10 mins away from there house
For me this is _the_ childhood classic. 😄
i love this movie, i have the dvd here somewhere
The reason they’re called the Goonies because they live in an neighborhood called “the goon docks in the city of Astoria,Oregon
I don't think people are more or less shocked by the things than before - it's just there's the internet now constantly telling people whos offended by what, people have forgotten to just to enjoy a movie for what it is. So many people are outraged now by movies and tv shows that havn't even been released lol
But similarly back then if there was a talk show or newspaper article then about something offensive, some people jump on the bandwagon, most don't really care.
Martin Sheen played John F Kennedy in a 1983 miniseries, so Mouth ain't lying.
The Hardy Boys TV show started airing in 1977, so Mikey would've seen episodes in syndication.
This movie is a part of my childhood, I used to watch this movie all the time growing up. Will always have love for this movie.
It's funny how people keep referring to the main characters and their Goon Docks neighborhood as "poor." They are obviously not that, just not as wealthy as the country club crowd.
Did you know that Grimlings is a Christmas movie?
You know I saw this as a kid but I dont remember if it was in the theater or if we rented it. Back then renting movies every weekend was a big deal. I dont watch movies much anymore. They just dont make them like they used to.
Goonies are kids from the Goondocks, the neighborhood where they live
Bet you never thought you would see Thanos on a kids bike with training wheels.
Haha amazing point!
After getting dragged behind a convertible on a trike, can we really blame Thanos for wanting to snap everyone out of existence?
