    READ:
Had a massive brain fart and thought this film was directed by Steven Spielberg. Richard Donner, was the director, while Spielberg was the screenwriter. Though I see pretty on point parallels through Steven’s writing, and the commentary is reflective on that…gotta give proper respect towards the Richard Donner. This film is so much fun and he captured that perfectly through his vision in my eyes. Again, complete brain fart, but wanted to update you guys on it and not mislead!

You're not the first to make that mistake, a lot of people assume Spielberg directed this, though I didn't realise that Spielberg had a story credit until just now; I knew he was a producer and his fingerprints are all over it.

Great childhood movie. Funfacts: they leave the line in the end about them seeing a giant octopus, even though that scene was deleted from the theatrical cut. R2-D2 is on the deck of the pirate ship at the end. And this movie takes place in Astoria, which is the same town where Kindergarten Cop would later take place.

Grew up with this movie, and for the longest time could never articulate why the scene where they start to take the treasure then Mikey goes "Except that. That's Willie's." gets me welled up a bit. Now watching your reaction I think it has to due with the integrity this kid shows. A childhood classic. I grew up on this movie. Love all the characters, but Data is tops.

For me, the joy of this movie is the cast. I LOVE these kids so much. The chemistry is pure magic, but you were so right to point out that the magic is captured, partially, by the terrific editing and mixing of the audio. The writing also allows each of the characters to have a moment. FYI, Mama Fratelli was played by Anne Ramsey, who was nominated for an Oscar for her performance in Throw Mama From the Train, a retelling of Strangers on a Train that also stars Danny DeVito and Billy Crystal. Highly recommend that film too.

As far as I know from all the director's commentaries that I've seen, that 'chemistry' between the child stars was one-hundred percent organic. They really had a blast on the set of this movie. Each and every one of them treasured it as a childhood memory shared between friends. That kind of makes Goonies all the more beautiful in my opinion.

There is a great article in The Atlantic that highlights the magic of the 1980s and kid/teen films: "What these films had in common was that they were mainly based on original ideas, they were fairly cheap to make, and-despite many being rated PG-they had an edginess that rarely appears in children’s movies today. In Roger Ebert’s 1985 review of The Goonies, he captured how the new crop of films refused to patronize their audiences.
There used to be children’s movies and adult movies. Now Spielberg has found an in-between niche, for young teenagers who have fairly sophisticated tastes in horror … His technique is to take his thirteen- and fourteen-year-olds and let them act a little older than their age. It’s more refreshing than the old Disney technique, which was to take characters of all ages and have them behave as if they were twelve."
Factors in The Atlantic article that led to the decline of these type of adventure kid stories: A PG movie with those themes couldn’t be made today thanks to the dominance of the PG-13 rating, which bifurcated films for younger audiences after it was introduced in 1984.,.. Another factor in the decline of youth films was that visionaries like Zemeckis, Spielberg, Richard Donner, and John Hughes simply aged out of the genre.
In neglecting the kinds of youth-oriented films that proliferated in the 1980s, studios may be missing out on a key box-office demographic. In 1985, the biggest group of moviegoers was viewers aged 12 to 24. In 2013, adults over the age of 25 outnumbered kids as moviegoers, but younger audiences are growing-in 2013, according to figures released by the Motion Picture Association of America, the number of frequent moviegoers aged between 2 and 11 rose 54 percent over 2012. Yet Hollywood doesn’t seem to be paying much attention to this shift. Of the list of films released last year, only 12 seem to belong in the "family" genre, and most of those are either animated or religious movies." www.theatlantic.com/entertainment/archive/2015/03/why-the-1980s-is-the-last-great-decade-in-youth-films/385295/

In the summer of '85, I was 11 and went with my sister and cousin to see this at the theatre, not knowing the absolute magic we were about to experience. We were absolutely enthralled and called our parents after to say we wanted to stay and watch it again. We didnt even have to pay. The ushers just let us back in the theatre so we could relive it. That's how seeing movies was back then. All your adventure dreams came true onscreen.
That scene where they are setting off on their grand adventure on their bikes while Cyndi Lauper plays in the background is actually my favourite. The excitement I used to feel watching that! There was something so special about that to me as a kid. I think because they were kids just like us. They were us. And adventures can be found in your own backyard.
That summer, we amped up our adventures. We crossed rivers, scaled fences, climbed down ravines, slid down hills on flattened cardboard boxes. With our bikes, we could always ride just a lil further and there was always an adventure, if you tried hard enough.💙
PS One-eyed Willy helped me get over my fear of skeletons.

Even as video game this could make for a seriously fantastic francise. The merch alone is crazy but alas its never been properly used. Honestly in my opinion this is one of the most underrated of Spielberg movies and with no one taking advantage of it is a real shame. As for the best ways to see this, there is a few that come to mind. Saw this in imax. It was great. Saw it on a movie projection at the park. It was fairly good. Even watched this once in vr with giant screen mode. Now that is one of the more interesting ways to check out the smaller details and that too was great. I may have to look up the uhd hdr10 version some time. That could prove an interesting watch to see if it improves the overall color quality.

Just about the time that this movie came out, I kept hearing people saying "Hey you guys!" and was curious what that was from. And then I saw it on video tape and instantly fell in love with this movie. For me, it's everything...Chunk doing the Trouffle Shuffle, Data doing his impression of Inspector Gadget, Ralph telling Rosalita that the house was full of drugs and the gang solving the mystery of One-Eyed Willie. Even the Fratellis were hilarious...that was Joey "Pants" Pantiliano...Cypher from the Matrix. And you're right, each character had a time to shine in this film and the chemistry with the kids was spot on. It's all those things, and then some, that makes this movie a classic. I never tire watching it over and over again. I had fun watching you getting a kick out of this movie. Someone mentioned Anne Ramsey and "Throw Mama from the Train" that sounds like a great idea.

Like you, James, i dug each one of the Goonies, Josh & the girls that rode with them, were perfect! EVERYONE brought their character to life! I saw each of them, as my own personal friends! SUCH an endearing film!
Godspeed, saints! Time is very short! So, PLEASE...beware of Satan's "BOOTY-TRAPS"!!!lol (,,,but REALLY!...)

Sean Astin did alot of 80s and early 90s films( Encino Man, Toy Soldiers, Rudy) and then did the Lord of the Rings Trilogy. Robert Davi( Die Hard, Predator 2, James Bond: Licence to Kill) also did alot of crime, drama and action films throughout the 80s and 90s.

For me and the millions of kids born in the mid to late 70s and was in elementary school by the 80s, these movies were magic. This was lightning in a bottle for your childhood to see these in the theater. Goonies, Ghostbusters, E.T., Back to the Future, Return of the Jedi, The Last Dragon, the Neverending Story, Top Gun... I can go on and on. This was like a rare sweet spot in movies. The 70s were going through some kind of emo period with dark Sci-Fi like Logan's Run or deep thought adult experiments like Taxi Driver. The 90s films were transitioning into new technologies and a finding a new footing in a post-Cold War world, just look at Timothy Dalton's run in James Bond. But the 80s, even the most mediocre of film is still remembered and has that guilty pleasure effect tacked on it.

Y'know, it's re-watching these through other people's eyes as first-timers, but especially in your case as a filmmaker, that I can appreciate how well-constructed the story progression is in many of these scenes, like the back and forth of tension when Chunk jumps into the street stopping the next car, and the light clicking on showing it's the Fratellis.

At 8:05 you ask where this was shot at. The overhead shot of the kids on the bikes through the forest and everything outside the restaurant is at Ecola State Park on the Oregon Coast just North of (and above) Cannon Beach, OR. It is a beautiful spot. I've been there a few times, the first time I didn't realize it was a Goonies filming location until I got there and I proceeded to geek out.

I was in 5th grade when I saw this in the theater and thought it was such a great movie! One of my childhood favorites! I noticed you liked the background chatter used for development of the characters and a master class in this is Robert Altman’s Academy Award winning Gosford Park. All the actors had to continue conversations in character even when not focused on. That is one of the best written and acted films starring who’s who in British cinema. You should check it out. I saw it in a surround sound theater and hearing all the conversations kind of lost me for a second, but it is an awesome film.

By the way I do a good Sloth "Hey You Guys" impression.

Everything in the house at the beginning really sets up everything else, especially the believability of how the group interacts with one another. It's a mix of script, actors, direction, and atmosphere, but it's all in service of giving you the emotional range of everyone involved and setting up how they are in various situations within the first 10 or 15 minutes: Bored, joking, under stress, annoyed with one another, resourcefulness, nosing around and discovering, inspiration, faced with looming threats, lowest point, encouragement, coming up with a plan. It's all there to set up and accept when the stakes get raised and the characters act and react to them.

Great movie, really brings me back to my childhood. The best part of this movie was the authenticity of the kids. The late great Roger Ebert commented that he thought the kids talking over each other was a problem, but he got this one wrong. That was just one of the details that made these kids all the more a believable group of friends, and made you feel like you were part of their adventure.

All the town scenes, and most of the outdoors scenes are filmed in Astoria, Oregon. In fact part of Short Circuit, and most of Kindergarden Cop was as well. In fact the Police station at the beginning is now a film museum. Oregon has a storied history of being used for film making dating pretty far back. If you ever end up out there enjoy it, it's a pretty chill place.

I am new to the channel and my immediate thought when reading the title was..."If a film maker is watching The Goonies for the first time then what else hasn't he seen and what in God's name must have inspired him to make films if he hasn't seen movies like this?"
Then I remembered that I'm old and periodically catch myself waving my fist at my tv screen.
Again, I'm new here and I mean no offense as you probably know more about making films than I do about that suspicious looking mole on my neck.
I am really glad to see you enjoying this film. Going to watch your video and like and subscribe.

The outdoor scenes were shot in Cannon Beach, Oregon. The kid's house is a real house in Astoria, but it is known in town the owners value their privacy and don't want to be disturbed. In Astoria, you can visit the old jail, it's a tourist attraction dedicated to the film. All the dungeons are a Hollywood studio. Best film of my childhood.

My guy, this movie is the quintessential kid adventure film. I was the same age as these kids when it came out, and it seriously hits that childhood imagination vibe so well that we used to play “Goonies” by going on adventures around the neighbourhood. Exterior shots of Goonies were filmed in Astoria, Oregon. The house is still there (privately owned, usually have signs asking visitors to respect the owners privacy, but I think I've heard the house recently has been a slightly more welcoming--there was a while where they put up tarps and wouldn't let non residents even get close) and members of the cast sometimes come back to town for reunion events.
It's a great coast town absolutely worth visiting any chance youbget

The elaborate way the main family's front gate opens is a device known as a Rube Goldberg Machine. All the devices can be completely different. The importance is that they are overly elaborate. The overly elaborateness can vary in how elaborate each is. There are at least 2 other big 80's movies that have Rube Goldberg Machined in them: Back To The Future and Peewee's Big Adventure.
