Cassette: Hard to find currently, check PinkBike classifieds or eBay.
Advent X works. It works well.
Plus, it’ s at a price point that all of you can afford.
Reliable, less finicky than 12 speed systems, low weight, and inexpensive to replace if you wear them out or damage them on rocks or in a crash.
Welcome to 2021!
Thanks for watching!

Just installed the 9sp on my sons bike. The shifting is just as nice as my GX 12. I honestly wish I just bought the Microshift for my bike
Thanks for such a detailed review. I've been an Advent X user myself for a little over a year now and I have to say it might be the best thing out there for people on a budget, and even for people with lots to spend as well. Such a solid and well-thought drivetrain. If you're considering trying something new, give this drivetrain a go. It won't disappoint.
Totally agree. Thanks for the comment and sharing your experience for others to learn from as well!

Hi. Can you share how many teeth on your crank? And then say if you can climb long steep hills, and how it is like going down hills? Do you run out of gearing going up and down steep mountains/hills?
@@chadkline4268 Hey there Chad, I'm currently using the Shimano SLX crankset with a 34 tooth-chainring. It took me a bit to get used to the big jumps between gears when going up very steep and long hills. However, after a while, it became second nature. I feel that a 34 tooth-chainring gives you the best of both worlds, you can climb pretty much anything you want (you do have to be a consistent rider tho), and you can also go fast both downhill and on flat terrains.
I am using 32 tooth oval and agree that 34 seems good for most terrain. Getting a smaller ring later and shortening the chain is easier than getting too small a chain ring initially and having too short of a chain if you decide to go bigger on the chain ring later.
Thank you both! Very helpful to me! 👍👍👍
Well spoken, thorough, and insightful review. Well done!
Thanks for the encouraging feedback!
Glad to help!
Plenty of good reviews on the Advent X a great reasonably priced drivetrain.
The Clutch is very easy to adjust. Two small phillips heads to pull the cover off reveals the torx head to adjust the clutch.
Thanks Jin. I knew it must be easy, just hadn’t bothered to adjust it yet.
I was little worried myself when bought it but now 18 months later I can honestly say it's good product.
It’s an impressive system that I have absolutely no hesitation recommending. Thanks for your comment!
@@RideAlongsidewhat do you have to say about the shifter when you need to wear fat gloves/mittens in the winter?
Thank you, really appreciate the thorough feedback on the cassette ☕
Glad to help!

Tive muito trabalho para traduzir, mas o seus vídeos foram essencial para que eu pudesse escolher este grupo. Thanks
The 11-48 is arguably enough for most riders. I doubt MicroShift making an 11 or 12 speed. Unless your racing, you really don't need all those in between gears, either you need a very high gear or a very low gear.
I would race on the 11-48, especially on steep climb heavy courses. Back in the day, having 11-34 instead of 11-32 casssettes felt like cheating on the steep stuff. The stronger racers would usually go 2x10, some would use the 3x10, but often only use their 32t or 34t middle ring a majority of the time. 32x11-48 is plenty for ALL of my riding. Love this setup and it’s still shifting well after 1000’s of miles.
@@RideAlongsidewhat would your choice product be for a crankset if you rode in mountainous areas and did a lot of long distance touring with 29er wheels? 🙂
I was using a 12 speed 11-50 SRAM cassette on a 30 or 34 tooth chainring, now I'm using a XT 10-45 and it's perfectly fine I use 2/3 gears 90% of the time...
@@chadkline4268get a SRAM SX or basic Tru vativ dub bb with SRAM or aftermarket chainring you can swap the chainrings and cranks easily at will.
@LaurentiusTriarius how long have you ridden on each cassette?
After 2 months and almost 800 miles I can say I've never dropped a chain as much as with this 1x setup. Ive tried making clutch adjustments but it seems like I have to hit a specific cadence to keep it from dropping on small cog shifts.
My bikes since I've began mtn biking in 1988 other than my 1st bike wich had Deore have been XT equipped. 3 years ago I switch to Advent X. My wifes bike was equipped with advent I tried it and loved it. I havent looked at Shimano since.
Well done!
I switched to Advent X about 1,000 miles ago and haven’t even thought about it since. Works great! Nice review!! Also, what tires are you running on that bike in the video. Caught a glimpse of the tread and I like tjem
Thanks for adding your data point Peter! It’s helpful to hear what others have experienced instead of just one example. The tires are Maxxis Ikon 29x2.2 tan walls.
Been running this system for a while now. Just finished up a long trip through Thailand and Laos punishing the system brutally. It's been through other brutal dirty trips in the past and general mountain biking thrash fests. It is still running perfectly. Just my thoughts as I have some XT and Sram drivetrains that while may be a tad bit more refined in terms of feel and clutch, this drive train rocks for me. It's a great drive train for the money, for sure. Cheers.
Thanks for your feedback! Totally agree
Go man, go! @@RideAlongside
you can adjust the tension of the clutch with the torx srew hidden under the clutch engangement switch te, whichold by two phillips head srews
using advent 8 speed on my sirrux x 2.0. Works just great ! I love the fact that the parts are cheap to replace in case something breaks over the years. Works well and low price, what else can you ask for.
Nice review :-)
Thanks Alex!

i have a deore 5120 on my advent X. works fine!
Thanks for the review. I've been trying to figure out whether the shifter can shift up with the index finger. Your video finally answered my question, but I'm bummed it doesn't shift with a finger. I'd love to put this on a bike to play with, but not sure I'm ready to retrain my thumb to shift in both directions.
It’s worth retraining. It was faster than I thought to retrain my thumb. Thanks for the comment!
Convinced, will this be compatible to my all city super professional SS ? Been looking to upgrade to a geard version with this or a deore 10 speed set up , great video
Not sure. Does your All City have a derailleur hanger?
@@RideAlongside yes , came with purchase, have that option
Should work then!
How does the advent x ride uphill? I live in a hilly area, so I feel like I need more gears, but I’d like to try a 1X.
I’m loving it on the climbs! Maybe try a 30 tooth front chain ring first. If it feels too hard on the climbs, switch to a ring with 2 teeth less, if too easy on the flats/downhill switch to a ring with 2 more teeth
What cranksets are compatible with this drivetrain? Looks sweet tho.
I don’t know if any that wouldn’t be compatible
While very well thought out the popularity has caused prices to skyrocket.
Examples for me. The video compares this 10 speed with Shimano's second in line XT offerings. Functionally identical to the professional racing set XTR.
I think that's unfair. It's a counterpart to Deore 4000 or 5000.
11-48t casette 53-60 euro's online retail
11-51t Deore 5100 66 euro's
Rear derailleur Microshift 70 dollars 70-80 euros.
Shimano deore 11 speed 37 euro's at my retailer in stock.
Taking that into account i can not advise anyone to buy this seperately.
That said you can get the advent X on a aluminium 29 from decathlon for only 550 euro's
Sure it has an crappy fork but for 550 euro's it was uncomfortably close to my 1100 euro's MSRP bike in both range and shifting performance.
Losing out on wheels and fork and overall handling (had a customer shown it off and due to my interest we had a ride with my new rental bikes to compare)
Needless to say i was impressed. And if i was a consumer i would've done the same in his position even with testing and hindsight.
But i don't pay retail and i can't buy a rockrider 520 as wholesale.
Yo bro, hope your well. I've been using a home made lube that really cuts down drive train wear. It's food grade perrafin wax and ultra fine ptfe. You tube channel OZ cycle has lengthy vid on prep, dip, and cleaning.
Thanks for the info. I will have to check it out!
Save the planet, Do not use ptfe, nature does not know how to degrade it, Scientists found even in the rains / snow in Antarctica
@@mathis7384 save me from people who speak on subjects they know nothing about. Science is a method. Scientists abandoned said method decades ago. Climate science makes no sense by definition. So,..if you require experts to tell you what is, is. Do us all a favor, and quit highlighting how much you don't know about anything. " It is always better to appear an idiot. Than it is to open your mouth, and remove all doubt. "
@@dominicwalker9947 So you are climate sceptic and i am the idiot ? I don't even know why I'm talking with you then, you're all so narrow-minded in your stupidity.
Look at the studies for yourself and find a counter-argument. Do you really think it's normal to find ptfe in Antarctica?
I don't.
There are much less polluting solutions that work just as well. And it doesn't cost you anything to try
I'd ditch the PTFE and use tungsten disulfide powder instead.
PTFE is a "forever chemical" and there are questions about its environmental friendliness.
So , can I run that cassette on a Sram XD 12 spd hub by just changing the adapter to a HG style ? Thank you for your time.
If you are able to change the Freehub from XD to HG, you’re good to go!
@@RideAlongside Thanks !
You’re welcome!
what chain ring and chain is recommended with this drivetrain
Any chain ring designed for 10, 11, or 12 speed will work. KMC x10 is my favorite chain
What material did they used on rear derailleur?
There are two versions. Steel cage and aluminum cage. Body is aluminum. Oversized pulleys.
Whats the purpose of that switch from the dweller? Umm you mean
The switch is for the clutch mechanism that prevents the derailleur from moving excessively while coasting down a bumpy trail. It largely eliminates chain slap against the frame. Turn it off to remove the rear wheel.
Cassette steel or alloy, or would you just go steel if bike packing?
The one I have been using is steel and I would recommend it if you aren’t super concerned with weight. It is incredibly durable. Mine ended up wearing down so much that one of the cogs slightly bent right before it wore out completely.
The lighter cassette only the top two are alloy. Major weight saving is from the alloy spider. The heavier steel cassette does not use a spider. All the steel rings are held together by two bolts. I just switched my steel cassette to the lighter version. Weight is very noticeable. I'm not worried about the top two alloy rings. I moved my chainring in closer to reduce the chain line. Most factory cranksets are set to bias the smaller gears which zi hardly ever ride in.
Can I use this on a gravel /road bike ?
sure!
Acolyte does the same for less $. Pull ratio is the same. Works with 11-48T Advent or other 10 speed cassettes.
Здравствуйте, посмотрел ваше видео не понимаю ваш язык! Но хочу спросить хорошая трансмиссия ?
Do I need a 1x10 crankset for this ?
Or would a chain ring for a 1x12 work also?
Yes, chainring for 1x12 would work.
Is xle 11 anygood?
I have not yet tried that microSHIFT XLE rear derailleur, but it only has a max cog size of 40-46 tooth, so it’s not as wide of a range as the AdventX. I am seriously very satisfied running 10 speed with this system and it would take a lot of convincing for me to switch to anything else.
@@RideAlongside I wanted the adventx but it was sold out, I just hope I didn't make a wrong decision buying the xle.
I had to on eBay for a few items when they were out of stock for AdventX. Also, I saw some lightly used AdventX items on Pinkbike lately.
@@RideAlongside how bad can the xle be.
I wish I could tell you, but have no idea. It’s probably great, if it’s anything like the AdventX.
which is your hub
Industry Nine Hydra
Acolyte has a better clutch.
I’m looking forward to trying it!
You use 32T in combination with advent x?
Yep!
