    Another great video! FYI the complete set is available from Universal Cycles in Portland OR, including the better aluminum cassette. Total cost with a KMC X10 chain was $179, incredible deal! And I have no affiliation with this shop, I live in NY. Keep these great videos coming, and sending prayers for you and your Mom.

      Hey quick question. I’m having a difficult time finding tires for my Vassago. What are using for 29 x 2.8/3.0’s ?

    • @RideAlongside
      @RideAlongside  3 года назад +2

      @@johnsalvaggio the Maxxis Chronicle, DHF and DHR2 are still available in limited quantities in 29x3.0, but can be hard to find in stock at times. 29x2.8 Maxxis Rekons are available too, but I have never seen any local bike shop stock them. I mostly run 2.6 tires now because I can find them from a variety of manufacturers and continue to test various models.

    • @johnsalvaggio

      I would love to try the Chronicles but can’t find them anywhere. I run Duroc 50’s so I think 2.6 are too narrow. I placed an order for Coronado tan wall 2.8’s, hopefully they roll nice.

    I've had an AdventX for over 2 months 😊 I love it compared to my original 14-28t cassette. With a 36t chainring, it will climb all hills, but you'll be coasting down steep hills. I wish they offered a 11-56t/500% range cassette with 5t between rings instead of 4t, 11-48t/400% range. Then, I'd use a 44t chainring and have all of the climbing gears and some downhill gears too.

    nice i have 3 bikes that i put the advent 9 group set on all of them, they were all 3x and i have updated them to the 9speed 1x and have had no issues at all. one set was bashed by a rock and bent, I hand bent it back and used the shifter adjustment to get home, bent it back w/ needle nose plyers and it works flawlessly to this day.

    Hey nice review.
    Greeting from Indonesia, I just bought a marin larkspur 1 for my wife and it's come with advent x combine with 11-51T which I didn't really notice when decide to buy this bike.
    Have tried the bike and I really like it!
    I have two other bikes that using SLX 11sp (11-46) and Zee 10sp (11-36), the advent x feel more crisp and easier to shift.
    I think It has the right amount of clutch strength.

    Great video...everyone who's run SRAM SX has told me, 'toss the garbage Rear Mech and put on a GX...and the shifting issues are eliminated.' Run them in mud, snow, rain and the issues are gone.

    • @RideAlongside
      @RideAlongside  3 года назад

      Not just SX, but NX too. Also either of those cassettes are just a temporary solution until a few rides later. I really wish bike manufacturers wouldn’t cheap out and put those cassettes on 1500-2500 dollar bikes. It makes new riders discouraged right after they started enjoying riding their new bikes. Microshift Advent X would be way more encouraging for them, but alas, it isn’t packaged together with RS forks, truvativ bars and stems, and sram brakes. When a big bike company buys 100s of thousands of components at a time, they get a really good deal on buying them all from SRAM/RockShox, which is why you see those brands so often across a bike company’s lineup.

    I agree with your perspective that microShift is a great option. I have a 1x11 Shimano shifter and derailer that I mixed with a SunRace 11-46 cassette and KMC 11SL chain. I also have the oval Wolfe Tooth 32 Oval ring. I’ve never had issues and rarely need to adjust. I use the high end Jagwire cable too.

    I already went 1x10 on the "road" bike a couple years ago. 38t front, 11t-32t XT cassette, 105 shifters through a tanpan to a Zee RD, (essentially a short cage SLX.) I love it, and only lost three gears on the top that I don't really use anyway.

    Between the upgrade of the Advent X groupset and Selle Atómica X saddle, the bike's pretty much dialed. Having a 28 by 48t bailout gear should save me Some bike pushing(?) and i don't miss the eleventh gear i had with my (discontinued) Box 1 11 spd group-set. No more clunky shifting and only a 46t out back; Box needs to stick to BMX if the truth be told... The shifting is awesome and quick. Chose the all-steel cluster for reasons of durability (90%of my bike is steel anyhow). Borrowing my friend's '86 Bridgestone MB-1 with the Brooks B20 saddle and Advent X group-set was such a horrible decision... ;)

  • @dirtycommtroop

    So far I love the Advent X. I swapped the SLX 11spd drivetrain on my Syncr. SLX is a great drivetrain and it took a hell of a beating. However, i thought that 46T was not enough for a rescue gear when i really needed it. So i went with the 11-48 Alloy cassette and it was just the extra power i needed with my 30t oval chainring. Aesthetically i think the old SLX 11spd cassette and derailleur is ugly. So not only did i save good weight and deliver more power, it looks better as well. I just hope it will last me in the long run. Like i said i mashed and bashed that SLX drivetrain and it was still chugging. Advent X still has its work cut out for it.

    Thank you for this great video. I received the Advent X shifter yesterday. Waiting for the derailleur to arrive. I will have to order the cassette and chain next. I watched another RUclips video about an 11-speed chain hack - and a video about running an 11-50t cassette. They caused me to pause on ordering the Advent X cassette. But now I think I should just order the microSHIFT Advent X cassette.
    By the way, I ordered the parts from Amazon. Thanks again.

    I have a Garbaruk 11speed 11-50T on order. I will see how it performs.
    I know some people snap teeth on Sram Eagle cassettes, even the gold ones.
    Currently I am using SunRace MX80 11-50T, but I , warped cogs, bent teeth on smallest cogs. the issues got worse and after hundres of KM I got chewed up the ramps, teeth, got sharp edges, it all caused the chain to hesitate. I had to use a flat headed screw driver to bend the cogs and teeth. on the cogs at the spiders.
    I was also rotating chains to reduce wear.
    and used two adjustable wrenches to bend back the teeth on the smallest cogs.
    I sold my 11-46T cassettes. but will I will see how the Garbaruk will perform. I hope it gets sent out soon.
    My Box One X-Wide can only go to 50T, so can't get the Shimano 51T.

    Great video. Microshift certainly provide some great options. I kinda wish I'd plumped for 10 or 9 speed as my 11 speed often needs multiple shifts and it was a bit fussy on setup. I spent on a very nice light Garbaruk 10-46 cassette and Shimano SLX mechs.
    I'm sure it'll never happen, but I reckon that a 9 or 10 speed cassette for the XD hub, with a 9 or a 10 sprocket, would *actually* be the perfect solution.

    I have Advent X on my new 29+ build. And I love it. More than the Eagle GX on my trail bike. The one thing I think you forgot to mention in the video is that you don't need a new wheel or hub. Sram you of course need to have XD. And Shimano 12spd requires their new Microspline. Advent X is compatible with good 'ol Shimano HG.

    The problem with Sram is the names that American companies adopt, they are very strange!
    Ex. X5 the consumer thinks there are 5 speeds, but the opposite is for 9S, and the X9 is for 10S, it's a mess.
    In addition to the Binary Codes that Sram adopts XX and more X, and the 1 seems to order , ex I want a drive train Double Cheeseburger X XX1 and More XXXXXX11111.
    Sram Hit the SX, NX and GX Gama 12s, later it returns to be that company with a bizarre creativity of names adopting Various X.

    in the shift test you showed it seems like the shifts are a little slower then the shimano stuf, is this also the case when shifting on the bike? Im riding a shimano m8000 xt setup that is now almost 4 years old with a 11-46 casset and if the clutch is ajusted properly it shifts as light as you want (you can find you own balance). where i live the microshift is at least as expensive as a slx setup with xt shifter, so not shore if im gonna try it out.

    • @RideAlongside
      @RideAlongside  3 года назад

      I just switched from the m8000 11spd XT. I like this more. The shifts feel a little less mushy, more like a high end sram shifter to me, and the derailleur seems to be shifting very quickly up the cassette, into a lower gear. When I set up my drivetrains for the first time with new cables (always using compressionless housing), I ensure the shifts up the cassette are faster than down the cassette since a) the cable will stretch very quickly as it settles in, and b) the shifts down the cassette, into a harder gear, are when I just want to go faster, not stay pedaling up a steep climb that snuck up on me, so fast shifting into a smaller cog is a nice to have instead of a need to have.
      Thanks for the comment,
      Nick

    Looks like it's worth it to try the AdventX. I'm not a fan of unnecessary chain binding with the 12 speed options so having a 10 speed with that tooth range is better design mechanically. I've owned a few hard tail mountain bikes with high kilometers which I have years of long term time with each of them. I had Deore LX back in the late 1990s and Deore in the 2000s. Switched to SRAM X7 and SRAM X9 in 2012. The SRAM stuff never shifted as crisp and I replaced many parts. It had a SRAM crank and GXP bottom bracket and I broke the bolt that hold the crank arm to the bottom bracket on a few rides by trail riding hard. I had to keep spares bolts on me to not get stranded! When they broke you could see they were some kind of alloy light weight crap that needed to be designed a little better to be stronger. My Shimano bikes seemed way more durable although I still replaced parts but only when I did something like land the derailleur on a log and bend it badly. I wonder how microSHIFT will hold up after some years.

      I did mention the steel cassette weighing 600+ grams. Maybe you missed me speaking about it, but no worries. To be honest, it’s so heavy it’s not worth noting it’s exact weight, nor did microSHIFT list its weight on their site. The 420g for the Alloy carrier/larger cogs version is definitely worth mentioning however. It’s a contender in the wide range cassette show down and a big reason for me to switch to this Advent X grouppo. I am currently “off season training” with the steel version and can’t wait to run the alloy carrier version come spring/summer. Thanks for the comment!

    I use 1 x 11 because I don't need a stupid dinner plate hanging off my rear wheel, more mass and such low range you might aswell walk... But 1x 10 is pushing it, 1 x 11 can be had cheap enough..if you want to save money just buy Shimano SLX

      You may be surprised how this 10 speed system functions with 11-48t. I know I was pleasantly surprised. Last year, I ran 1x11 Shimano XT with 11-42t cassette and was totally content. I literally made the same comments you just did. I would take this over 11 speed XT however. Seriously. Long term review will come later, in spring or summer so stay tuned.
      Thanks for the comment.

      @@RideAlongside I just like the shifting precision of SRAM over Shimano. Never liked "squishy" shifting. SRAM shifts feel like racking the slide of a handgun. Crisp and mechanical.
