First Stitches Tutorial#1 Hand Piecing a Two Patch + First Stitches If You Have Never Made a Stitch!

Items you will need to have on hand for this project:
*thimble ( I will discuss thimbles and options in Floss Tube Episode #37 )
*pincushion
*shears
*designated place for youe in progress project
If you have the 1840's kit, you are set!
If you are collecting your own supplies you will need:
***THIS IS AN 1840's HAND PIECING TUTORIAL! NO MACHINE INSTRUCTIONS WILL BE GIVEN.
*A sewing machine OR
For hand piecing-
30# or higher cotton thread or
silk thread (my preference) either 100.3 if you are trying this for the first time or Soie Surfine if you are an experienced hand stitcher. Both options are available on my website as starter packs www.susanstandleystitchintime.com
*Sewing needle
For cotton thread I suggest a #9 sharp needle and for silk thread I reccommend #9 crewel needle
*Thin patchwork pins- I like Karen Kay Buckley extra fine short patchwork pins
*2 1/2" OLFA Template or a hand cut cardboard template
*2" Bristol Paper template. Heavy cardstock can also be used
*24 different fabrics that measure at LEAST 3' x 6"
*Backing fabric 16"x 20"
*Batting 16" x 20" (I like Quilter's Select)
*Binding 3" x WOF( Width of fabric) we will discuss trimming this down to the correct size in the binding tutorial
*Dressmaking shears OR
Ruler, Mat and Rotary Cutter **THIS IS NOT A TUTORIAL FOR THIS OPTION
I have now had a chance to watch this whole video - I am an experienced hand-stitcher, but I loved your approach, your encouraging attitude, the detail of your instruction - this is an excellent tutorial. I hope to get started on my doll quilt very soon!!

Excellent tutorial. I love the Grace you have given everyone. I think the hardest part of learning a new skill is that we as individuals are hard on ourselves and compete with those who have been doing that skill for a long time. One thing we all need to remember when we start learning a new skill is not to compare ourselves with the experienced. Remember we have not seen their first attempts at the skill. Surprisingly they too had to start somewhere. Whatever mistakes or lack of “perfection” one is seeing in their new try are the same that the now experienced all had. Practice is what makes it look good. Please save your first attempts so later you can look back and see your progress. If you stick with it you will be amazed. Also remember in the case of piecing for a quilt, those stitches that you may not be feeling the love for will never be seen as it will be “buried” inside the completed quilt. There are a ton of secrets hidden in there!

I heard about this from Brenda and the Serial Started and popped over and was immediately entranced. I make simple preemie quilts with a local group for our university hospital NICU ward by machine and while I enjoy putting them together I actually don’t really like the machine (mine is always making some weird thunk at me, and then needs to be fiddled with!) so when I saw this I was like “maybe I learn how to do by hand?” So I watched the whole video and was like “I think I can do this!” And ordered the kit. I’m looking forward to giving it a go! Thank you for your patience and the detail of the video!
I love hearing about the work that you do. I am so pleased you want to try hand piecing!!!!! I do think it is worth learning and a great skill to know. I hope you find it enjoyable and relaxing. You might consider making a quilt for yourself . The preemie Quilts will be faster on your machine but who knows… you might become a speedy hand-piecer too!!!!! Fabulous, Susan. Thank you for the extensive research, and additional work, you did to teach us about how "Mary" would have made a doll quilt in 1840 and the materials and tools she would have used. Fascinating in every respect. BRAVO!!! :-D
That was an excellent tutorial, Susan. You are definitely a born teacher. Even though I have a cabinet full of 1800s reproduction fabrics, I still pre-ordered the second-round kit and can't wait to get started on it.

@@susanstandleystitchintime Yes, there could be a lot of doll quilts from my stash and if not those, regular quilts. I turned 78 on the day you released this project, so I need to get busy and use some of that stash before I go toes up. As I mentioned in my comment when you released this project, I don't do Facebook or Instagram, so I shall have to email you my progress. I enjoy hand stitching.

Well I’ve watched the video for the second time and made three sets of two patch. I’m having a blast and my stitches are looking pretty even. I takes a bit getting use too backstitching to secure your thread but it works and I’m learning a new technique, feels great. I decided to use what I have and created my own tin plate with two layers of card stock. I find cutting with a drawn line and sheers reflective too my childhood. Thanks for the homework! ❤

Excellent tutorial Susan! It’s so neat to realize the subtle difference in how I would have assumed doing this step as compared to the reality of doing it. So practical. I never would have know to backstitch every three stitches instead of just at the beginning and end.

Love this and looking forward to gathering all I need for this doll quilt. Heard about you from Brenda and Laura and I’ve been wanting to learn Hand stitching. This will be so interesting also to hear how they stitched in the 1840’s👍❤️ I’ve gathered the thread waiting on the beeswax to arrive with my #9 needles and pins and choosing some similar fabrics but not traditional ones. I have some Liberty of London fabrics I’ve been wanting to use so maybe this is the time. I’m not sure what chip board is or where to find it but that and the tin plate are all I need to get started. I have the other supplies as I love to quilt small things but usually use my sewing machines. Thank you for this series.
Oh I am so excited to have you joining the project!!!!!! It sounds like you are well on your way to being ready! Chipboard is a dense cardboard and Bristol paper is like very heavy card stock!!!!! Woohoo! We just sat in the backyard and made our first two patches! Loved learning about and using our 1840 tools -- they feel so precious to us already. A few questions came up for us, perhaps you can answer them in an upcoming tutorial. 1) Where would Mary's family have gotten the metal template? 2) Why is the wax applied to the thread after threading the needle instead of before? Oh that is so excellent I’m so excited to hear that you tried it and that you felt a connection to Mary and her little tiny hands doing that work. I love love love your questions and I will definitely address those issues but suffice it to say for now I don’t wax the thread Until after I have put it through the needleBecause I don’t want the wax to clog up the eye!!!! I also typically rub my fingers through the thread after I’ve waxed it and I don’t think I did a great job of demoing that so I will definitely be more conscious in the next video!

I've gotten 2 sets of 2 patches together. Im finding that i have a hard time seeing my finger pressed line, especially on the "back" square. Any tips? Thanks for everything!
Excellent question!!!!You can finger press each piece separately and then pin them together or press the front and then the back and then pin on the line!!! I hope that helps. It does take a bit of finger strength!!!!!
You can also draw pencil lines around the 2” square on all of your cut out pieces if you are still experiencing difficulty 😀
@susanstandleystitchintime thank you! I started doing that; it just takes a bit more time. I'm a recovering "good enough" quilter. So, I'm striving for matching seams on this one.
