    Susan, This is a wonderful tutorial. Thank you so much. It brought back memories of me sitting on a stool next to my grandmother as she sewed on her machine. She had me hand stitching four patch blocks. It kept me in her sight and out of mischief. I had no idea of consistent seam allowances. What a mess. At the time, I thought they were great. Happy stitching. Best, K

    Susan, this was so great and helpful! I am so glad you made this tutorial. I am so much better with my hands than with a sewing machine. As a matter of fact, I have quilts I have never started because machine piecing intimidates me so much! Maybe now I can make them with my hands! Thank you!

    Thank you, Susan for inspiring me to go back and do hand piecing that I learned over 40 years ago. Back then I drew my stitching line with a little quilters see thru ruler and pencil. The stitching was exactly the same except in the middle for the seams. Did that slightly different. But the accuracy is so much better with hand piecing, that I never quite achieved with machine piecing. I hope you do more tutorials on hand piecing to finishing a little quilt. Thank you, again, for sharing your knowledge on this wonderful journey of quilting by hand. Blessings to you!

There are so many ways to tackle this handpiece seen but I do find it very relaxing and I’m so glad you shared that with me. I do hope to do some more tutorials as I think Crosstitch is would find this really fun and a nice option to add to their way to work skills.

    Hi Susan: I enjoyed your tutorial. I like handpiecing and attended a retreat some years back. Are you familiar with Cindy Blackberg? (She is now retired and lives in TN). She had sets of stamps to make all kinds of blocks. Hers were rubber with a wooden hand hold. The sets had a pattern with them, and you could mix them to make additional quilt blocks. We used different fabric stamps and other things, but the piecing is the same. We used baby wipes to clean our stamps. I use Jeana's Foxglove needles for everything but I haven't seen the gold ones. Are they new? I cannot use a thimble for applique or handpiecing. I've tried every kind of thimble, cheap and expensive. Teachers told me to wear it during the day and pretty soon I wouldn't even notice I had it on. I couldn't stand it. I do fine without it. You are a lady of many talents!
    My Mom used cardboard cereal boxes to make her templates. Cut everything out by hand and used a pencil for marking fabric. Her quilts were beautiful and our family loved receiving them as gifts. We've come a long way, haven't we?
    Louverna

      Hi Louverna. I have some of Cindy Blackbergs stamps and sure wish I had more! She retired before I could collect them all!!! They are lovely and you are fortunate to have them! I understand about the thimble. They bother me too but I just push past it and use one anyway. 🥹. I love your story about the quilts made by your grandmother!!! I hope you write it down. It’s a wonderful memory. Thank you for watching and commenting!!!!

    Although I was stitching away on Mary Florence Dickinson while I watched this, you really got me excited about pulling out some hand piecing projects that need completed. I used to love hand piecing. It is very soothing and so satisfying because it is so accurate. I think if makes you feel closer to the fabric too - sounds a little weird, but true. And thanks so much for the links to the pins an needles. Happy Stitching

    Susan, a wonderful tutorial. One question, I know our ancestors didn’t have a stamp tool to make a stitching line, did they just eye ball there stitching line? This is definitely something I would like to try but probably on a smaller project. Thank you very much for your time for theses tutorials.

    Thank you so much for the detailed explanation of how to hand piece. I’ve watched a few videos on hand piecing and your method is very inspiring. I’ve been wanting to do a “Dear Jane” quilt for a LONG time and have tried many times without success- I’m just not accurate enough - but I’m wondering if hand piecing the Dear Jane blocks would make for better accuracy? Your thoughts would be much appreciated. Thanks again, Susan for another great tutorial. ❤ 🤗

      Hi Peg …thanks for your lovely comment. I think hand-piecing Dear Jane would be fabulous.!!!! I put her together many years ago and used different methods all through the process. I did find appliqué to be very helpful on so many of the blocks as well. Piecing those tiny shapes by hand is a wonderful option. There are a few that could be machine pieced And several are fantastic for foundation paper piercing. So I think a variety of skill sets is going to help you get through the project. It’s one of those things you just have to start and work your way through. Please let me know if you need any other help and I hope you have the best success putting that gorgeous quilt together

    That was awesome Susan!!!
    Question… could I take machine pieced half square triangles and hand piece them in a row? Could I just draw a quarter inch seam allowance on each before hand sewing it together?

    • @susanstandleystitchintime
      @susanstandleystitchintime  Год назад

      That just might work. You don’t want to stitch the seam allowance down at all. It really depends on the accuracy of your cutting. You might want to make a half square triangle the exact size that you want your pieces to finish and then trace that onto your half square triangle. That will become your stitching line. I plan to do some more tutorials in the future to deal with some of these type of questions. We can chat if that doesn’t make sense.

      @@susanstandleystitchintime Thanks so very much Susan!!! Im trying to figure out quilting in general and REALLY want to do a mini....Ive gotton lots of tips and tricks.....but my machine is still eating the squares and my quarter inch seam is not accurate- I think because as it feeds through it pulls it over. I assume the feed dogs pulls it...frustrating!
