Mary's journey sounds fascinating. The sewing these girls did at such a young age! I have been quilting for years so I probably won't make the quilt but plan on following along. I love all the seasons, winter, spring, summer and fall. Thanks for your time and effort for putting all this together.

Susan I am so excited to have found your historical sewing videos and look forward to meeting Mary and stitching the doll quilt. I was about 8 when I asked my mom for needle and thread to make my Barbie doll some clothes. Next I graduated to her all meta Pfaff where she taught me the basics and turned me loose! Glad she had a knee pedal! I have XS for over 40 years and have quilted for about 15. My very first quilt class we constructed one fan block, embellished it and hand bound it. I was probably in my 30’s then and thought that was a lot of work. Now I have come full circle and can’t wait to make a doll blanket with Mary. Thank you so much! Your voice is relaxing and I have learned so much.

Hi Susan, what an amazing endeavor you are doing! I can only imagine how much time, energy, thought, and preparation this has taken so far and will as well as you proceed. I have done needlework and sewing for many years, but only started quilting during Covid via online tutorials by Celeste Creates. I am loving it and I have been busy making a quilt for each of my grandchildren as I am not young anymore. I have also made many items for gifts which I love to share. There is such joy in creating a quilt or quilted project and gifting it to someone you love. I am totally in love with the beautiful fabrics that are now available to us; I love all kinds of fabrics so I have definitely fallen down that rabbit hole! LOL. This was such an interesting video and I hope to follow along with your tutorials and learn what you have worked so hard to share. Thank you Susan. ❤

Love your idea. If I still had my quilt Shoppe you would fit in perfectly as a teacher. I specialized in reproduction fabric up to 1920. We had civil war soldiers barge into our Civil War Love Letter class as they told us what living at that time was like, we lugged in our heavy treadle sewing machine to have our club members try to get the machine to sew, had an area roped off outside so customers could see how large a covered wagon was plus other fun things to get them to see the time way before we were alive. We delved into the history of samplers and the ages of girls who stitched them and many more things like that. The last day of our shop a customer made a surprise visit dressed in 1860’s woman’s clothing to demonstrate how women at that time wore all the different layers of clothing and explained what was acceptable . She knew it was going to a sad day and she wanted to make it a special. It was wonderful as we had young people in the Shoppe and she really keyed into the differences of dress and society. This idea of yours would have been so perfect as I loved to tell customers that we stand on the shoulders of those who came before us. Bringing history alive is special. Thank you for sharing so much information with us.

What a fascinating content!! I can hardly wait to follow along! I love to quilt and cross stitch all year long, spring, summer, fall, and winter. I can still remember being astounded when my mother picked up quilting when all 5 of us kids left home. I said to her, I didn’t know you could quilt! She commented she always knew how, just chose not to. When I asked her why, she replied, she had to do so much of it when she was young she didn’t think she would ever want to do it again. She went on to say it wasn’t a hobby when she was little. It was work. She was born in 1922. I am glad to say she did learn to love it again.

Warm greetings from Connecticut! I definitely want one of your workbag kits! Sounds like I will not be able to get one until June 22 at 8:15pm via your website. Thank you so much for the love and care you have put into creating this very special project! I can't wait to join you on this journey! I am a very experienced needleworker, recreating historical pieces from the 17th through 19th Centuries. I have been in re-enactment groups that focus on Medieval/Renaisssance and Colonial time periods so I know a great deal about historical textiles as well as how people lived and dressed in the past. I have recently become very interested in the 1830s and 1840s so your project comes at the perfect time. I know how to sew by machine and hand but have never made a quilt! Thanks for your dedication, Susan, to so carefully researching the past and sharing it with us.

Gosh, Susan, I am just lost in admiration of your achieving the First Stitches project!! Just love how you have branded everything and packaged it all in view of the 1840s - such attention to detail! If ever I work up the courage to make my first quilt I am sure that it will be with Betsy Chutchian fabric as I just love her designs - maybe this Summer or Fall. Wishing you all the best with all your endeavors but especially with your eye situation. Take good care of your dear self!
