Before I watched this in 2008, I rewatched the entire Young Indy TV series, them the first three films, and I got SO much more out of it, with episodes on Pancho Villa and dealing with Henry, Sr. I liked how the film used the zeitgeist of the 1950s with not only the Cold War, but also aliens, instead of fighting Nazis yet again. Alien themes in the 50s were not only symbolic of invasion from Russia, but came from the alleged flying saucer crash in Roswell, New Mexico and govt. cover up, which Indy was asked to inspect, was mentioned in the beginning of the film.

I just love the fact that Harrison Ford kept on playing Indy from 1981 up until 2023, whick meant that several generations could experience new adventures with the character. I watched the original trilogy when I was a kid, went to see Crystal Skull on the big screen during my first year in high school, and fifteen years later I'm in my 30's and having a blast with Dial of Destiny. I love these films so much ❤

Check out the pilot movie for the Young Indiana Jones Chronicles .
It depicts a teenage Indy with Poncho Villa and also introduces everyone to his parents and his dog Indiana who you got a glimpse of in Last Crusade.
Every episode of the series has Indy interacting with various famous people of history and often getting involved in famous events.
You get to see Indy depicted at three different ages,8, 16 and 93 with the latter telling the stories of his youth in wrap around segments.
There is even one with Harrison Ford as a 50 year old Indy telling a story.

I LOVE this movie. I'm glad you saw it for yourself. We could nitpick every single Indy movie, but they are all entertaining and succeed in what they were intended to do. Just my opinion, but Raiders is my favourite and Crystal Skull may be my 2nd. I love all of them though. I just feel like this one has such a solid and enjoyable story and adventure. I also love the inter-dimensional alien aspect. Perfectly fitting for the series IMHO and, especially so, given the 1950s Cold Ward setting. All of the adventures are based around that serial, pulp action - 1930s WWii artifacts of power hunting - and 1950s sci-fi and UFO craze! It's a perfect way to make an elder Indiana Jones movie. Lucas never plays it safe. Unfortunately, too many jaded "fans" get scared and disturbed when artists do new things with THEIR OWN franchises. Then we get watered down crap when new people try to make corporate bucks off the foundations of someone else's creation. Que sera... ❤❤❤

  • @daddynitro199

I think a lot of people forgot that the whole series of movies was modeled after old adventure serial films that were known for formula, recurring motifs, moments of levity, and a certain level of “you need to suspend disbelief.”
I think it had been too long since The Last Crusade to charge headlong into the defiance of reality and have people embrace it.
Dropping an atomic bomb in the prologue was a mistake. Nuking the fridge in the 3rd act as Jones’ way of escaping while the soviets got vaporized would likely have been received better if the universe of the story had been constructed better, the rules set beforehand, and the rules broken at judicious times.
That said, Cate Blanchett was delightfully cartoonish. Blanchett, Harrison Ford, Karen Allen and John Hurt definitely got the vibe of the series. I don’t think a guy who does his own dental extractions for a role really belongs in the universe.
    (My 2¢)

Maybe it’s just me, but I didn’t mind them having aliens, I thought Shia as Mutt was good, and I liked the idea of them using Russians instead of Nazis yet again as the bad guys. The plot could use some tweaking and the CGI is overblown and bad in some places, but it’s still a fun ride. I give it a 6 out of 10. Not great, but not terrible. Okay.
