- In celebration of Final Fantasy XV's one year anniversary I decided to make a video explaining the incredibly hectic process that FFXV went through during development. What began as a different game called Final Fantasy Versus XIII is now known to us as the fifteenth mainline Final Fantasy game, Final Fantasy XV.

Versus 13.. The dream that almost came to life. Shame it never saw the light of day, versus 13 stirs up a mix of many emotions like a kind of tranquil melancholy.
I still remember the first time they announced it and hunting down every piece of information they released about it for a solid year or two before finally moving on. I still went back to it from time to time to see if there were any updates about it’s development for years after that. It’s insane how much time has passed since then.

Versus XIII won't be redone in Kingdom Hearts. Disney won't want themes of death, reaper worship or Shakespearean tragedy in their game about Mickey Mouse. It could work as a spin off.
@@Arjanator there are a lot of Disney movies with death in them, idk where you got the idea that they wouldn't be okay with that. also Riku and Sora will be the only 2 characters that go into Quadratum. no Disney characters. at least for right now

Now that Nomura is working on Verum Rex with Kingdom Hearts, I really hope that we will get what Versus XIII was supposed to be.
I wish we could have had both XV and Versus XIII at time as two games with the same characters but different timelines. It would have been cool.
It’s not the same. :/ I don’t understand how Noctis can’t come back. In some sort of alternate timeline or re-imagining.
Especially since they already know it’s gonna sell because people like Noctis and his friends. Just needs a better story and world.
@@pinkblossomsCan he not though? We've had timetravel and timelines in ff1, ff8, ff10, and now ff7 Rebirth seems to have literally alternate timelines' characters. The Omen trailer NEVER gets any explanation as to why it was patched into the game. The book released after the season pass talks about Versus-like dreams. Noctis was randomly sleeping for 10yrs. We have clear versus13 references in kh3, and a remake that isn't really one (ff7r), so I don't see why we can't have a ffvs13 reboot (maybe simply called "ff versus") after remake part 3 wraps up. Rebirth was fantastic and done in a VERY timely manner considering its massive size and quality. Mabye they've finally figuring out timely AAA game development?
@@NoctLightCloudthe one key thing stopping a ff13 versus remake/reboot…. Square. They aren’t going to dump a bunch of money into that project again, it’s over. Ff7 only got the “remake” treatment because it is literally their most famous entry. It’s a consensus by literally everyone that it’s one of the greatest games of all time. Every final fantasy that came after it has been divided. And, it was released decades ago so a remake made sense for easy money. Although, even the remakes are barely breaking even sooo
Good video I wish we got Versus 13 I liked FF15 but always thought Versus had a cool vibe too it I still hope one day we could see a Versus 15 set in an alternate reality or something like that since thats apparently a thing. Versus sounded like it was supposed to be bigger than just one game Nomura said during an interview Final Fantasy XV will come to a single climax, but as for the story, I plan to continue it. and Square Enix even trademarked A World of Versus Epic

Final Fantasy Versus XV
A "remake" of sorts of Final Fantasy XV is going to be announced in the near future as Final Fantasy Versus XV, directed by Tetsuya Nomura and overhauled with a team that knows more about Luminous now that XV was made, and with decidedly more KH-like combat. It will encompass the entire original story intended for Versus XIII.

Especially if you consider the Dawn of the future DLC that's now a novel🤷🏽♂️ I love the game nonetheless but it does feel like something is missing 💯 but final fantasy peasant has a video on the translated novel and it's EPIC 💯 hearing and or reading it feels like playing the 1st FF7...you could only imagine more
I still want FF Versus 13 to come back. FF 15 kept the crucial part involving the brotherhood between friends, but was missing the romance and critical lore of Versus 13. Having to take down your own lover in a Romeo and Juliet story while questioning your own faith in worship of the Goddess of Death and grim reaper. With Stella being a descendant of angels and gods of light while Noctis himself is condemned by the rest of the world for worshipping the kind benevolent goddess of the underworld. I thought that DLC could pick up the pieces by expanding on Aranea and Luna/Stella; but unfortunately that never really happened.
I don’t want Yozora’s Verum Rex, I want Versus 13.
What saddens me in a way is that sarah from the collaboration game tera wars & iris have a way more relationship with noct than Luna herself, even if the game was finished they never showed any screen time between the two at all just very little & not enough to understand why they love each other, that’s what they messed up hard on
Since this video is 4ys old extra things kept from versus 13 was the open combat demo when you start the game that has a cut insomnia with a subway passage where the chocobros go to escape the citadel, also armiger unleashed was supposed to be in versus 13 as how noctis is supposed to be at full power always but then changed into he couldn’t inherit the power fully so he needed to go to royal tombs, also Garuda was supposed to be originally in versus but was removed but then when the ffxiv collab joined they decided to put it as bahamut killed her & removed her existence yet she came back
"Vs13 is waiting for 13(trilogy)"-tetsuya nomura. The last ff13 game came out on like 2012 maybe? So they essentially announced the game 6 years too early.
And in an dengeki interview it was revealed that vs13s story was already fully written. It wasnt just an "idea" it was a real thing that didnt had a team to work on the project. Square enix's bussiness division 1 was plagued with the 13 trilogy,BD2 had to work on type-0 and its port,BD3 worked on KH stuff,BD4 worked on ff14,BD5 worked on mobile titles,etc etc. Vs13 didnt lack the amount of content or anything,it just didnt had a real team that was free to work om the game.
Thats really the core issue the game had. And after wada left the new ceo ordered nomura to step down RIGHT when ff13-3 was finished and BD1 was free to work on something new...it a bunch of unfortunate coincidences and square enix's incompetent management staff that led to vs13 "cancellation".
But other than that this is a fine video

I want a lone prince, defending a castle from machine guns with an ancient art of magic swords. He defends it for an old order, one that he doesn't even completely understand, but is still torn with questions. Questions like, "Why?" "Who is this all for?" "Should this order really be defended?" They can still tell that story. A girl could appear that makes him question his loyalty to his king. After a lot of plot twists, with him confronting his king for answers and getting nothing meaningful, the invading army winds up killing his king, and then when it turns on him he shuts them down very quickly. He becomes the new king, but the end of the story is cutscenes of him brokering a peace treaty with the other king. He walks right in the front door, the army steps down when their king waves them away. The new, dark prince, there with the mysterious girl that told him of the tale of her people, and the king of the enemy are discussing something. Gotta have some mystery. We don't need to know what happens, since he took out most of their military in 1 night, we're not even remotely worried for his safety. We can assume that he is simply telling the enemy king what their relationship is going to be for the next few decades, whether he wants to hear it or not, it's gonna happen. Don't just tell a throwaway story, you gotta mean something, or else don't try to tell a story at all.

I think a lot of the development issues came over the “worshipping death” this topic that surrounded the games story since nomura wouldn’t budge on his dream project vision. Shame they wouldn’t let him release a book or something
I doubt that’s the most scandalous part of Versus 13. Noctis was more of a mafia gang member and less of a prince, he killed Stella and he was hallucinating her.
That alone is more edgy than “worshiping” a God of death or Valhalla especially since this God (Etro) already exists in the FF universe.
I’m just surprised the game was so unfinished when Tabata became co-director. Maybe they just focused on cutscenes and visuals. 😂
I hear anywhere from the game was 20% finished from certain videos to 80% finished from other videos but the higher-ups wanted to change too much and kicked Namora off and verses 13 and kingdom hearts 3 were almost done but they wanted to switch over the hardware because they weren’t happy with some of the complications from the engine for PlayStation 3 so scrapped all progress and started over for next generation

I don’t buy that. This game could explore those topics because it was originally a spin-off. Spin-offs had free reign. Maybe when they forced it to become a mainline FF title

I just came here from that KH new DLC trailer. Don't know much about the KH series but it piqued my interest when I saw the old trailer comparison with FFv13. I've played FFXV for a short while and have yet to finish it, so I am curious what the entire ordeal was during it's long development. Thanks for elaborating little detail behind it, this definitely needs more views!

It’s so hard to believe only 25% of Versus-13 was done when Tabata jumped on. The story synopsis makes so much more sense than a forced political marriage and we see so much footage of Insomnia and the world design we don’t see in FFXV.
Not to mention it was 10 years in development and everyone involved seemed so passionate. 😭
after watching the whole video i was actually expecting 100k views. but no. i don't get why this hardwork isn't noticed? btw, u did a wonderful job on explaining everything. although i am a die-hard fan of kingdom hearts, and idolize nomura for it, i am really happy he got his hands off ffxv.

I hope this game gets the Justice League Snyder Cut treatment. What I mean by this is that if enough people ask for it, Square Enix gives Nomura the ability to go back and finish the project the way he wanted to. It will just be Noctis' true story route.
I personally prefer the darker tone when Noctis and Stella both seemed ready to do battle with one another. I'd take Stella over Luna any day.
As much as I want that to happen, I don't think it will if only because Nomura basically decided to port his concept into Kingdom Hearts Phase 2 lmao

@@zaqareemalcolm it's hard to say at this point. After showing the limo scene from KH3 DLC, it was either a secret easter egg for true fans to understand or he's using his original scraped materials for a completely different game altogether.
What I meant by "secret easter egg" is like a hidden Cameo of sorts. It's a way to show us "hey guys, look at this. I haven't forgot about my story for versus thirteen and I wanted to slide it in here for good measure. Hopefully you all see it and make a big fuss about it so I can go back and fix Final Fantasy 15/VS13 the way it should be."
I really do wonder how much better the game Final Fantasy 15 could have been if he finished everything before moving to kingdom hearts. Everything grabbed my attention far more than what it ended up doing in Final Fantasy 15.
Who knows? Only time will tell at this point. Our voices seem to have more impact within the last five or so years than they ever have in the gaming community. If square looks at this move as some potential sales revenue, they'll give Nomura the okay, or at least I think they would.

I completely agree! I love FFXV too, but I can't deny that it cut too much interest content original for the game Versus.
I'm one of the many people who saw Versus the first time back at 2006 and really looking forward to play it. And as much as I am happy Tabata took on the role and gave us the game, but once again, he still cut out way too many things from Versus that Nomura originally planned.

This is such a shame... FF Versus/early XV would've been so much better imo, so many cool ideas were removed or changed...
I liked Final Fantasy XV when I first played it, but I could always tell there was something off. Certain parts of that game are downright bad, and I have a hard time liking XV, even though I really want to. I'm just, disappointed, more than I've ever been with any other game. Despite how insanely hyped I was for this game (I started making RUclips videos because of it), by the last few chapters, I was struggling to find enjoyment. You can even hear it in my voice in my streams of the game, from chapters 13/15, I was struggling to even give a shit. I could tell how blatantly rushed and unfinished the game was, and when the credits started rolling, I was just left confused and bored. When the credits roll on a game people have been waiting 10 years for, the first words out of your mouth shouldn't be "are you kidding me?" I've never felt more unsatisfied by a game in my life, even by the train wreck that was MGSV. So many promises were left unfulfilled, and even ignoring Versus and earlier XV trailers, the game fails on a lot of fundamental levels like basic game design and character development. I don't know, I'm just whining. I feel like I got excited for nothing.
Anyway, great video! It's always sad to see such well made videos go so unnoticed, 41 views is absolutely criminal. I hope this channel gets the attention it deserves.

I agree about the last few chapters, but there were some genuinely good parts in the outset, on continent #1 (I don't remember the name). That felt like the only part of the game which was 100% finished, I could tell the developers never even got started on the 3rd continent because they shoved the player onto a train & streamlined it to the finish line. Based on what the first part of the game was like, this could've been one of the best in the series - if it had actually been completed. As is, it's basically like the "Black Cauldron" of Final Fantasy titles. Both took way too long to make, were extremely costly, & ended up having important content outright removed from the final product. Disappointing, because I really wanted to like it.

I'm not sure since I didn't put the songs in the description (like I usually do), but off my head I can remember that the first one is FFXV - World of Light, and the last song(s) are an instrumental cover of "Stand by Me" layered with the version by Florence + the Machine.
I believe I used a variety of songs from Final Fantasy XV and maybe some from XIII. I usually try to use music from whatever I talk about during my videos. Hope that helps :)

I agree. FF15 is one of my favorite games but it is a mess. There is no reason why the story needed to be told across 4 DLC's, a novel, and 2 animes.

I'm really excited to see what they do with KH4. I really enjoyed KH3, despite having about as many problems with it as I do with this game, but am glad that the Xehanort saga (kind of) wrapped up finally. I'm hoping that the theories of Sora having to compete in the Reaper's Game from TWEWY in order to come back are true, as that sounds awesome. I also think that Riku being in the world of Verum Rex, which is essentially Versus XIII (slightly) reimagined is an awesome premise and has SO much potential. I think that the inevitable Verum Rex world will basically be what Nomura had hoped for Versus XIII would be, minus Noctis and everything. I think it's gonna be awesome, and definitely want to make some KH content on this channel soon!

@@Naniko Ahh. Really hoping the next KH game will have more square enix worlds like the TWEWY. Don't mind exploring midgar or Spira. This might be an unpopular opinion but I think Disney is holding back KH's potential. Most of the disney stuff are basically "filler" which can ruin the pacing of the game. But disney owns Kh so can't really do anything about it.

Don't get me wrong, I absolutely LOVE Donald and Goofy, and a lot of the Disney characters/worlds (somewhat) but I absolutely feel like the series should (have already, kind of what i expected KH3 to do) gravitate much more towards the Square-side of things. I think that all of the original things that have been done within the games (Sora and friends, Org XIII, The Foretellers, etc.) are the best parts of the games, but it always feels like Square (or more like Disney) wants the focus to be almost MORE on Disney than the thing that the game series is titled after. But I digress.
Looks like Tetsuya Nomura in someway is incorporating those ideas. Only time will tell what he has under his sleeve. 😉

Maybe in theory, but there never really was a "Versus XIII" - it was always just a concept with promotional material. I agree that I would've loved to see the original idea come to fruition, though.

I swear I'm the only one who loved FFXV. Everyone else hates it for reasons I just don't understand like the story being "bad", the driving being too long (even though you could easily fast travel), or Noctis not being a good main character (he was different but still a good hero).
Seeing as how I made a 20 minute video about it, you're definitely not alone there. But there definitely is a lot of hate for the game, and while I do certainly understand where people are coming from, I definitely love the game much more than the average person. I wouldn't criticize it so much if I didn't love it.
It was good, however made the ffxv story up in such a short amount of time for a completely new game within an already in work game was genuis despite still some missing story content. But still it is nothing compare to what could have been versus iiix. I wish it got delayed :( it still leaves me scarred knowing that I will die not knowing what such a beatiful game the original versus xiii would have been.

See, this is why you don't put an "Ideas Guy" in a position of power. Nomura lacks focus with many of his projects, which is why he usually has collaborators. I believe that if a better director had been given the responsibility, it would"ve had a lot smoother of a development.
For sure. I love Nomura's ideas, he just needs people surrounding him to reign them in and make sure his ideas actually become a game.
After hearing about how Nomura gets assigned to shit without being told, idk, man. He has so problems but I can't blame him entirely. Tabata is also kind of questionable. How much time did he spend on tech demos and "stream-only" gameplay sections in lieu of...idk...finishing the game?
@@boohoo723 Yeah I'm sorry but Nomura creates good work if fleshed out, and Vs 13 was a much better concept even than Tabata's fully released game ever was. The mess that was 15 was probably the biggest disappointment I've faced in my life, and I've had good job/travel/etc opportunities not pan out for me. On release day at midnight I visited maybe 5 or 6 Walmarts to find this game in stock, because I was just so excited to play. But like you said, they were more concerned about showing off than actually finishing the game. So many broken promises that I thought I was playing a Ubisoft game. But even Ubisoft I have to give more credit to because at least their games aren't plain empty when released. This game was as empty as it felt. I saw someone exploring the out of bounds of this game and it just broke my heart. Empty maps and locations, so much of the story lost due to bad management. And that's only in the released game itself; we'll never even see what was lost in the original scrapped game engines and original concepts.
And this is coming from someone who didn't even follow the production that closely, I still felt betrayed and disappointed and angry, but mostly despaired. It wasn't due to bad story-writing, bad merely bad management, and to me, that's just too unfair and infuriating. I know they're never going to revisit it ever again as much as I wish differently, but I would kill to have Vs 13 see the light of day.
Versus XIII is Tetsuya Nomura's project before taken over by Tabata and turned to XV. If any of you follow Kingdom Hearts, another one of Nomura's project, in KH3 he put this character Yozora that looks like Noctis. And his name literally means night sky in Japanese.

Yes, it's an MMO that is fully titled as Final Fantasy XIV: A Realm Reborn. It originally came out in 2013 but was overhauled after it's critical failure. It's probably the second most popular MMO right now behind World of Warcraft, and is a very good (Final Fantasy) game.

Personally I am over Versus XIII, and I think the majority of fans are too. Not to mention I'm sure square wants nothing to do with it anymore after all they went through in the first place. XV took pretty much every element from Versus and incorporated it, albeit differently than what was shown, but it was either that or scrapping the idea entirely. I think it's simply time to move on.
Besides there's no reason XVI or beyond can't reincorporate ideas or themes from Versus into a better game than Versus ever would have been.
Whyyyyy Can't they finish versus 13 nooowwww and have it be a linking bridge between the 15 universe and alternate dimension of 13 and type-0 with versus 13 being the crossover dimmension plane (of regis being the family of time, and the fleaurets being the family of space for the crystal).... oooh they made a masterpiece... but could have made the unprecidented best game of all time crossover trilogy storyline here!!!. C'mon then do it square enix!!!

The reason for 15 was to kill the whole 13 game line up. And it did just that. Time to move on to FF16 and FF14 Endwalker.

@@Am_Josh It's mediocre ation rpg combat system. You can spend your time spamming the attack button and potions to win every encounter.
Story is bad and you need to watch other medias to have clarifications about some plot points or characters' stories...
Best combat it depends on what you like. Since almost every FF before this one had turn based combat systems.
