Just the most splendid and dazzling interpretation. Fray has a certain virtuosity but it’s tempered with an austere modesty and ability to be communicate with the most profound emotional delicacy. Such an exciting talent.

Fray’s performance of the toccata: slow, significant voice separation, multiple inflections of touch/interpretation, and a startling amount of respect for what could be interpreted as minimalist melodies that blossom into romantic ideas of tenderness and loss. Only his performance convinced me of the greatness of this piece as a romantic epic

I find this interpretation absolutely fascinating. There are of course differing conceptions as to how Bach should be delivered on a modern concert grand. For me the criterion is simply this - a performance must live and speak to me, Fray achieves this splendidly. Consequently I have no rigid opinions to expound concerning period and style when a performance is truly engaging.

    • @chrrev1

Yes I tend to agree. It is part of the beauty of those pieces that they may be played in so many different ways in terms of articulation, dynamics ... I just listened to one version of Sokolov which was super fast - whilst I can admire the virtuosity it actually touched me less than this one.

This is a very sensitive and enjoyable interpretation. We are creating a new art form by performing Baroque music on a 20th/21st century Steinway or other fine modern instruments. The harpsichords and clavichords of Bach's day could not perform the graduations of dynamics or touch we have available to us now.

I would appreciate a more subdued tone, reserving the passionate fervor for the B minor Mass. These compositions were originally intended for the detached harpsichord, where the expressive nature of the piano was not yet present. Therefore, pianists who convey emotions on the piano are a modern phenomenon.

Love that sarabande, deliciously intricate. In saying that, I often find the pianists' egos in demonstrating virtuosity leads to excess speed to the detriment of the subtleties of harmony especially in terms of the suspensions carrying from one chord to another for instance which Bach uses a lot... This gets lost in too much speed. I can see Fray attempt at slowing down on the repeat of the first part of the marvellous Gigue and taking the time to make things ring... It's so much better. I often think of people in those days, without cars and planes, walking and who thought nothing of walking for days to go from A to B... As Bach did on several occasions to go and listen to organ masters... Perhaps they lived at a slower pace overall...
The Tempo di Gavotta seems pretty erratic to me, aside drom the fact that Frey simplifies the first notes as equal whereas they're clearly written as unequal. Overall these guys like Frey are very good but they tend to approach things too forcefully to my taste. A little brutish. I have to conclude Perahia is vastly superior on this one.
