Around 0:29:00 It's hilarious how Fray is telling to German musicians who are playing a German composer's music, that they should be a bit more Italian, while Fray is French himself! I love this interpretation.

Merci Monsieur Fray !

No non no. this is a big mistake. Glenn Gould overinterprets, he does too much. his playing lacks clarity. He uses Bach, God the Father, to do his antics. Bach deserves better, he demands precision, depth, contrasting playing. Not a piece of LOL🤣

Whoever thought that Baroque music has to be dull and mechanical? Of course Bach understood and applied mathematical principles with unrivaled genius and devotion to God, which is such a gift to all of us who came later. But here we see a whole new level of interpretation on top of that. What would Bach say if he could hear this? I wish Bach could have lived another 250 years to see the advances in musical instruments since 1750. Add to that modern recording equipment and techniques. We pay homage to his creative genius both by attempting to recover the music of his day and also by carrying on his creative spirit as Mr. Fray does here.

Well said! I think Vikingur Olafsson is doing similar things with solo piano. Bach can be understood as having real emotional significance for listeners even as a performer maintains a high level of accuracy by mastery of the fundamentals. Bach is so much more interesting when musicians add the interpretive dimension when playing.

    WOW!
I sometimes think that all the post Bach composers were a waste of time - because Bach had already said everything worth saying.. (and with perfection and beauty)
I suppose I'm not REALLY that Bach centric, hell, Ive even enjoyed Beethoven's later quartets.
My pianist father used to say to me "Bach is the daddy (papacito) of all musicians. I later met one of his pupils. He told me - "your father used to say "Bach is the "Holy Spirit" (espritu santo) of music. Down to earth with his son but a bit bombastic with the pupil.
Everything is so perfect in Bach.

In Bach's time, they used mostly harpsichords and clavichords. In the latter, you needed to sustain the notes which were usually plucked and not struck. Therefore the trills and sometimes decorative ornaments were used- to sustain the notes with. Ties were generally speaking, useless. Keyboard specialist.

Sit up straight & get a haircut young man! Oh wait, we're here for the music. Never mind. Be an artist if you must. One suspects Bach would be breathless if he could hear his concerti played on a modern steel harp piano. Fray uses words like sensual & lyrical. How beautiful Baroque sounds when so much emotion is injected.

MY NECK & BACK JUST ACHE WATCHING HIM PLAY ALL HUNCHED OVER LIKE THAT, HE'S GONNA HAVE SOME SERIOUS PAIN ISSUES AS HE GETS OLDER, IF HE DOESN'T ALREADY, UNLESS HE STRAIGHTENS UP HIS ACT...........THAT'S THE WORST POSTURE SINCE VALENTINA LISITSA.........BUT I MENTIONED THIS TO HER, AND SHE HAS SINCE STRAIGHTENED UP QUITE A BIT, IN THE NEXT VIDEO AFTER I MENTIONED IT ANYWAY, BUT I HAVEN'T CHECKED IN WITH HER IN A WHILE, SO I DON'T KNOW IF SHE STUCK TO IT..........BUT IT DOES LEAD TO DRAMATIC EFFECT TO BE ALL HUNCHED OVER, OR IN OTHER WORDS DOING SOMETHING WEIRD, IT LENDS CREDIBILITY IN ONE'S MIND, THAT I MUST BE SOME SORT OF ECCENTRIC AUTISTIC GENIUS, ALA GOULD ETC. AND HOPEFULLY THE AUDIENCE WILL BUY INTO IT, (WE ALL CONSIDER SUCH THINGS IN THE SUBCONSCIOUS) BUT IN REALITY ONLY LEADS TO A LOT OF PAIN, AND POSSIBLY A SHORTENED CAREER............... BUT I DID GET QUITE A CHUCKLE OUT OF IT ALL, WHEN HIS NOSE WAS BURIED A FEW INCHES FROM THE KEYBOARD, AND HE WAS LOST IN HIS GENIUS, AND HIS HEAD WAS LOWER THAN THE SHEET MUSIC, BUT HE REACHED UP AND TURNED THE PAGE ANYWAY......... HA !!!
(YOU CAN ALWAYS KEEP THE SCARF ON INDOORS, IF YOU STILL FIND THE NEED TO GET YOUR GOULD ON !!!)
BUT I CAN'T FAULT HIS PLAYING........ SUPERB PLAYER, JUST SHARING THIS AS A PIANO PLAYER WITH A LOT OF BACK TROUBLE, WOULD HATE TO SEE HIS TREMENDOUS CAREER CUT SHORT BECAUSE OF THIS BAD HABIT !!!
BUT IT DOES SHOW HOW GIFTED SOME PEOPLE ARE TO LIVE SUCH PAIN FREE LIVES, THAT THEY HAVE NO IDEA ABOUT, AND TAKE FOR GRANTED............I COULDN'T LAST 5 MINUTES IN THAT POSITION PLAYING THE PIANO WITHOUT BEING IN AGONY !!!

I think he watched too many Gould videos. Gould never played very loudly so did not need the body to produce more sound. Fray tries to get volume by leaning his body into the keyboard which could produce serious back issues. Like my piano teacher said “ All that glistens is not Gould “ We mere mortals could not replicate Gould !
