How to paint a weathered barn, barnboard and wood. Line and wash watercolor. Peter Sheeler

- A demonstration on using the texture of your paper to create the look of weathered barnboard. This technique works even better when working in larger dimensions than this 5 x 7 inch.
I recommend when trying to determine how wet your brush should be, start out drier and add moisture until the effect is achieved. Too wet and the effect will be lost.

PEN: The Uni-ball deluxe micron roller ball pen .5mm nib. These pens are extremely waterproof on my papers and can be painted over immediately. The roller ball is almost indestructible and claims to be archival.
PAPER: Size- 5"x7"
Arches 140lb Cold Press Paper for this Video.
My papers of choice include Arches 140lb Hot press and Cold press paper and Strathmore 500 series Sketchbooks. All are 100% cotton rag.
For beginners, I recommend starting with a high quality paper and experimenting with different types. As your style develops, you'll get a feel for which type is best. Waiting to switch to a better quality paper later will be much like learning to paint all over again.
MY PALETTE: All tube paints!
Winsor Newton- Yellow Ochre, Sepia, Burnt Sienna, Winsor Red, Davy's Gray, Ultramarine, Sap Green.
DaVinci - Phthalo Blue, Quinachridone Fuchsia, Cadmium Yellow Lemon, Cadmium Yellow Deep. *I plan to replace the Fuchsia with Winsor Newton Quinacridone Magenta when mine runs out.*
The palette is the mixing tray from a "Koi" Watercolour travel set. The colours are set up so the ones I mix together most often are close together.
BRUSH: An inexpensive Curry's brand #2 and 3/8 flat brush.

Right before our eyes you turn a simple drawing into a masterpiece amazing. Thank you Peter.
You are most welcome Dennis :) Thank you, Peter
This is an awesome tutorial. I absolutely love tumbledown out buildings on farms.
I love the way that your watercolours are made up of very subtle washes and although some colours are mixed in the palette, others are blended on the still damp paper to get a realistic weathered appearance. I have some excellent books explaining various watercolour techniques but there is no substitute for a live demonstration. Very inspiring indeed.
Thank for these great comments Roger. It's always great to hear I've inspired.
I'm new to this type of art. I decided a few months ago to take up water coloring. I'm old, and after purchasing some pretty good supplies, discovered that I have a tremor in my drawing hand. This style seems to work well with the tremor. The way you draw, happens naturally for me. Watching you work is like watching magic unfold before my eyes. You're remarkable. Thank you.
Every touch of your pen to paper creates a new detail. Thank you for sharing your talents with us!
You're very welcome. So glad you enjoyed it. Peter
I would imagine many have tried to accomplish a study of a weather worn barn or somesuch farm structure. I know I have tried my pen and ink style and color wash to reflect this theme. This work is refreshingly different enough from your usual wonderful work to be almost a stand alone piece and study. Thank you for latest piece.
Great comments Greg! Thank you :)
Thank you for showing your paints at the side. It helps with the teaching process. Love your work!
Thanks so much. Glad you found it helpful. Peter :-)
Awesome watercolor barn. Inspirational! The drawing strength can stand on its own.
It was watching your pen and ink drawings that helped me to love this medium and I’ve enjoyed trying to emulate your style, giving credit to you, of course.

Thanks so much Gary. Greatly appreciated.
Hi Peter,,
As someone who has followed you from almost the beginning on RUclips you continue to amaze me. You are so talented. You possess more talent in your pinkey finger than I do in my whole body. Your sketches are amazing. Your color mixtures are so clean and clear. Thank you for all that you share with us. I love watching you work. Thanks so much for sharing this and all you do with us. Blessings to you and yours.

I couldn't agree more. I always look forward to new Peter Sheeler paintings. Inspirational - every single one - and this one has set a very high standard.
I love watching you doing this. It is as if I could hear what you think.
No that would be cacophony ;) Thanks
Always enjoy watching you -- thanks for sharing
You are most welcome Audrey. Thank you for watching :)
Peter, Your style is what I really enjoy doing myself. I airbrush with acrylics but have just recently been working on changing over to watercolors and using a hairy brush. Please keep up doing what you do here. It has been very valuable to me and others learning to use watercolors. I've not looked at all you have posted but each one I've watched and gone over a lot and learn something from each one. Your work of highlights and shadows are very good. Thanks for the time you give to make an old man learn and just enjoy watching and learning.
Thank you very much Richard. Your comment inspires me to keep painting and posting :)
I am following your easy style with old Ontario barns, pen and wash etc. and loving the results...great visual lessons without a lot ot of yak yak...I learn by watching and you are the best real time videos out there.

I love the detail on this! I really like how you were able to create depth and texture in this but your colors didn’t get muddy or too opaque looking as mine do so often. Thanks for making these wonderful videos!
Thank you very much Cathy. Greatly appreciated.

No it isn't. There are a lot of techniques used in this one. Thanks
Beautiful Peter.
Old barns can be so pretty. I've seen a few out in the more rural parts of the valley. Even if not pretty than can still have lots of character.
Thanks Donna. Unfortunately, so many of the old barns are disappearing.
Thank you so much for your tutorials. They are just what I need to get going. I need lots of practice. :)
Thank you very much. Always great to hear I've helped in some way :)

Hi Coronada. I buy online from Currys. They only ship in Canada.
Love watching your work Peter, but, the adverts are becoming really intrusive. Necessary perhaps, but, sad.
Hey Peter, I’m thinking that if you’re inside the barn, you don’t want to walk thru that door on top to get out!!
LOL. It would take some nerve to enter this barn let alone get to the second floor.
Craig Nelson. Growing up, we had an elevator to that door to send hay and straw to the upper loft. Inside the barn, we had a ladder built into a wall to get up to the loft.
You overworked that one bud, cheers tho x
It happens.
Peter Sheeler I love honesty, and your attitude is what keeps me at it, thank you bud
