£83 for a MultiFX unit is absurd! There is no way it can sound good, right? Well, yes actually. The Sonicake Matribox may just be the most surprising multi-effects unit out there. Today we take a look at the Sonicake Matribox, what features it has and why it might just be a really great solution to a common guitarist problem. Stick around as we put the Sonicake Matribox through it's paces.

Thanks to Sonicake for sending this out to demo. The unit was supplied but this demo is not a paid review, all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Showing your aunt blowing up was a perfect Halloween season horrorshow. Great demo really enjoy it when you go in-depth like this.
It was enough for this poor man to weep like a baby at very least 😂😂 thanks for the kind words, it's always a risk when going from no talking to loads of talking, but I feel some bits of gear just need some explanation
I had the Zoom G1 effect box that a so- called friend filched from me! Oh how I miss that chewy sounding deley effect it had in it! Nice delay effects and drum pattens as well.
@@KennyBlackbird-oo1pt I dare say he owes you some multi FX goodness 👍
Budget pedals (and in this case, budget multi fx modelers) are always my picks whenever I try to pick up new gear, because I always want to see the underdog succeed. Problem is that you have to dig deep in a sea of not-so-good gear to find some trully hidden gems. And this, for less than $100 dollars, is decent enough for anyone starting and trying to experiment :)
Exactly my sentiments. This gives a great representation of what to expect with some classic amp sounds and even some effects, it's truly a great place to start, eh?
Nice one! 😎👌Been looking forward to this... and finding out the truth! 😀
Could be good as a backup rig.
I've got a feeling I might be able to pick up a used one for about £60 in a couple of weeks 😜
😂😂😂 always planning that next step ahead. They are on sale at the moment funnily enough for about 78 quid too
@@BudgetPedalChap 👹 £78 is pretty decent 😎👍
The general idea I'm getting is that while this device may be a bit unintuitive and some things like the drum and looper aren't too great, overall, it appears to be worthwhile. Even if I only manage to find 5 effects I like, it's still cheaper than 5 individual pedals to do those effects. Thanks for the review
Yeah absolutely. The amp sounds and general feel of it are pretty good, especially considering the price. It's easy enough to find what you're looking for within the unit, but it just takes a few too many button presses to access them for me to rely on it for live use. The Matribox ii solves this issue if you're looking for a gigging unit. Thanks for the comment 👍
Ok, I weren't expecting much but actually that was rather impressive. We need to hear those wah tones though
Ah man, I missed the wah! I could do a follow up I guess, it would be a nice excuse to play some of those tones again 😂😂
the wah is ok but i use a dedicated wah pedal from sonicake and its way better.
I didn't even know about the Matribox and I just saw the Matribox II is already out there 😅
😂😂😂 yeah, I was surprised by that too. My chap over at The Guitar Effect has a demo on it and he made it sound great 👍
I mean, it’s hard to complain at that price!
It has some decent sounds too tbf, we truly are living in the golden age of tone
Got it for over a year now. Not bad for that price point. Quite easy to use. Found some drawbacks tho but for that price tag it's something I could work around with live..
Yeah, there are definitely better units out there but you'll be paying early double the price. There is more than enough in it to gig comfortably with and if it gets beer spilt on it, no big loss 👍
Instant like and sub, mate. Great video!
Cheers 👍 considering the price, it's a great bit of kit
@@BudgetPedalChap used it for everything except recording. Will do next month, see how it works..
@@BudgetPedalChap it's decent enough to use for gigs and rehearsals really..
@@kevinmyles6369 yeah, totally 👍
I love affordable pedal. subscribed❤
Cheers gent 👍
Pretty good surprsingly, honestly people wont be using it for the drum machine, but as a budget, it's passable...
Oh yeah, it's not as bad as I make out and it's better than just a horrible clicky metronome
Anyone any idea how to make the expression/volume pedal into a wah wah, it just stays as a volume pedal and I cant find any info other than RTFM which ive done and im none the wiser!!??
@@SidBonkers51 they usually have a pressure switch under the expression, so you put a bit of force into the exp pedal and it'll switch on the wah mode 👍
@@BudgetPedalChap Yes they do, dont they and that was my first thought but no there is no switch, if its possible at all I assume it has to be done in the app and there is a 'thing' in the footswitch section that has different fields (whatever ther are) but I cant work it out and it could just be that is a section for an additional expression pedal, maybe, possibly...... I even googled it and failed, I just got links to the Manual but not to a particular section and I cant find anything in there about a wah other than the ones in the Modulation section of pedals like the Auto Wah and wth is Wah UK? a special wah for us Brits? TBH Ive given up with it now, I think ill probably buy the NUX MG-300 or MG30 as I think they look easier to use.
@@SidBonkers51 I am sorry I couldn't help further gent. Fingers crossed that you get some more luck with the Nux 👍
I got 14 eighty nine bucks at walmart pretty nice little x pedal
Yeah, it's a great little tool and has features beyond it's price
is it based on HOTONE CHIP?
@@mantazzz337 not sure. I've tried the ampero and it doesn't sound like this unit, so I'd be surprised if that were the case.
Thanks for the video. Is it possible to reorganize presets by moving them in the PC editor? Or do you have to save them one by one and reload each in the place you want?
You know, I'm not sure. I didn't try to reorganise then, but I did try the desktop editor and even if you need to cut and copy them in different locations, I imagine it wouldn't take too long. The desktop editor is quite intuitive 👍
@@BudgetPedalChapthank you for your answer, I may have not written my question the right way. it's not about cut and copy. It's about when you have a lot of presets created and you want to organize them, be it to group all presets made for each guitar you have, or for specific live set, there are 2 situations depending of the editor:
1. You can move and insert presets between others, and that's very easy and fast.
2. You cannot insert presets between others, in this case you have to save them one by one. Then reload them one by one in the right place. And that's a big lost of time. I have a pedal with this problem, believe me , it's not easy.
So if you still have it, I would thankful if you try o insert a preset between others and tell me if it worked.
@@olymoon2008 I don't have the unit currently, I passed it onto a friend that wanted to try it out. Sorry I couldn't help you more
I already have a zoom B3 which is a good bass pedal but the signal chain is limited to 3 effects or amp sims
Would this be a good addition to my collection?
I think this one allows 3 additional effects as well as an amp and cab block, an expression block and I think delay and reverb as separate blocks too. It sounds like it could do a bit more than the zoom unit at one time, but I can only speculate as I've not used the zoom before.
🤘
🤘indeed
For the price it is ok and the sounds are not bad, but there is absolutely no dynamic range :D all sounds are compressed as hard as it is possible :D
It's not quite that bad in the room, but there is some compression for sure. It does respond to volume control on the guitar though in its defense
@@BudgetPedalChap Hotone Mini would be also really cool to see here. It is double the price but still in the affordable range of gear.
@@scentia_est well, if we keep it hush hush, I might just have that coming up in the pipeline 😉
As far as I can tell, you can not edit the drums.
Yeah, I found them very unintuitive. It's a great pedal at this price point but the drum machine is best left alone.
Using some £8 skull candy in ears and it sounds crap. ;P
🤣🤣 I have heard the tone can be sub-optimal if you use crap headphones.
This could be good
It'll be worth the wait 😉👍
Every two bars or so the drums yield a roll or cymbal crash that is out of place. Therefore the drums are completely useless.
Yeah, I found the drums an addition that I didn't use at all pretty much
I overpaid for my Matribox.
Oh dear, are you enjoying it at least?
@@BudgetPedalChap To be honest, No! I tried it out, found it was complex and as soon as I tried to play along with the drums every 4 bars or so it broke the beat with some drum rolls and cymbal crashes which were completely out of place in the material I was presenting. I hunted for better beats, not happening. So it horrified me and I sulked a bit and it left it sitting there, pissed and scrambling for a thought, before I would take a sledge hammer to it. Good thing I didn't take to the hammer, but I'm waiting for someone to come up with a crack to purge the device of it's useless drum beats and replace them with practical useful beats that don't come with an idiot attached. You see rap and contemporary music is established first by the beat, then the dialogue then the song is written around it. Traditional music is written with the music and lyrics first, then the drums are added to express the emphasis on the chord and bass changes. i can see how some techie idiot from this generation builds the drum sounds without any tiny idea of how a beat carries throughout traditional music. It should have been like an old style drum machine, remember the push button ones?
Can not edit the drums, and the drums are garbage. Unusable.
@@nonec5246 they are slightly better than just a metronome but yeah, definitely an added on extra rather than full fleshed out feature
