    We simply took th lead of the tune : Won't You Come Home Bill Bailey , and made up the parts
    ourselves. Then we started improvising on the chords of that tune.
    Kind regards,
    Bert Brandsma

    That's probably about the most coherent arranging effort for two bass saxophones that there could be. Who would even think of that combination - well done!

    Man those horns sound nice! I played alto and baritone for about 9 years through middle school and high school. Then gave my horn to my brother and now he plays it. Love to have another. One day i remember I didn't practice my scales and my band director locked me in the instrument storage room. I was all alone so I looked around and found an old dusty sax case. I pulled the horn out and it was a Bass! I put by baritone mouthpiece on it and played it! Sweet! Found out it was know as the Bitch!

    On the Martin I used to play a 1950's Selmer Bass mouthpiece, number E. It is not so wide as a vintage original bass sax piece, but it worked pretty well. Had a lot of punch. On several other basses I use original wide pieces. you can play softer on them.

    Well, I have 3 conservatory degrees in studying saxophone and can definitly assure you that these two horns are bass saxophones. The baritone is a bit higher pitched in the key of Eb, and the contrabass saxophone is lower pitched compared to the bass, it is also in Eb. The bass sax is keyed in Bb, a full octave lower then a tenor. Exeptions are a few known original Adolphe Sax bass saxes from the 19th century that are keyed in C.

    I started on clarinet, switched to alto sax to study at conservatory. It's only since 2004 that I have a bass sax, althought I did some gigs the year before.
    The intro is just a socalled vamp, a short common harmonic progression. Theme from the Muppet show used something like this. There are others to.

    @PierXanthony Hello Pier, I totally feel no offence. It is just funny. When we did this it was just the intention to have some fun with 2 bass saxes. We had never played together. In fact we had never met before until in this hotel in Portugal.
    But it turned out to be so nice musically that we decided to film it, without thinking about our looks. We just wanted to have a memory about this great time, far from home!

    Hahahaha, funny words. When I studied at conservatory we were asked to think about the meaning of the word music.
    One professor had the idea of naming it ordered sound.
    There definitly is order in the sounds you hear in this video.
    If you like it or recognise it is of course another matter, but there definitly is an order. Even a harmonic progression, a melody and all.
    Kind regards,
    Bert Brandsma

    Bill Bailey is an old song often used in classic jazz. It is supposed to be composed by a certain : Cannon, in the year 1902

  • @ABrandsma
    @ABrandsma  14 лет назад

    In my experience that is often right, but it also depends on the shape of the mouthpiece. I mean the distance between the reed and the mouthpiece itself. If the distance is large, it is less easy to play soft.
    Generally speaking, vintage mpc are closer to the reed. But not always.

  • @ABrandsma
    @ABrandsma  14 лет назад

    The American basses in general have a somewhat deeper sound then the French. I have the feeling of the Selmer would blend nice in an sax ensemble. The American are somewhat more suited for playing bass lines.

    Cheapest good bass saxes are found in the USA. You'll have to look for Conn stencils, bass saxes with another name, but actually made in the conn factory. These names are : Pan American, Martin, Holton and a few others. Be sure that it is one made after 1920, otherwise the intonation will be sketchy. You can check that by the serial numbers. Don't buy relacquered horns.
    Kind regards,
