For the first time in a while, a big, high-effort guide video! I get asked about this all the time, and I hope you guys find the information helful :) Let me know what you want me to cover next!
That's the kind of video I wish existed when I started Smash. It came too late so I didn't learn much from it, but you've definitely filled a huge void, gonna show this to all the newcomers I come across
Nice vid. I would have liked to see a brief mention about spacing though. Just to help people understand that the raw data isn't the only thing to consider when deciding what you can and cannot punish with different oos options. Minor detail though and something most people will figure out very quick.
absolutely incredible no one ever makes videos explaining frame data because they assume that it's something anyone knows and it really upseted me finally newer player have a good way to learn what frame data really is
This was SO well explained. Like, everything you said was just SO much better executed and explained than all of the other vids I watched on RUclips. Thanks for that. 🙏
I’m a lab rat who spends half my time in training mode, so I didn’t learn much, but I watched anyway and liked to help the algorithm. A lot of people can benefit from this video and ones like it. You’re awesome!
Very nice video! The only thing I would think to add is that the safety on shield is a best case scenario. Which assumes that the aerial is hit one frame before hitting the ground, not staled at all, and full hopped. I guess a small little list at the end of the things to remember would make it easier to come back to quickly.
Great video! I'd also really like to watch a similar video about frames when landing. How landing lag works with airdodging/ canceled aerial/ etc. And how to best use that to punish people when they land
Nice video! People are ignorant of frame data and now I have an easy way to explain it to them. I'll be sure to share this with my friends. All your explanations were concise and easy to follow.
when you were demonstrating the red "minus on shield" aspect of frame data, why do you start counting it frame by frame once the enemy who was shielding is able to move? Wouldn't "minus on shield" be just when the hitbox strikes the shield?
Hey Solo! I'm a player with some relatively extensive experience in smash and frame data and all that, but I have some friends I'm trying to teach, so i was looking for videos to teach them about that stuff. I just wanted to say that, of the guides on youtube for this stuff, yours is the best! Thank you for your content/contribution!
Man what an amazing video! I come from an RTS background and was wondering what the hell is going on with frame data and stumbled upon this! This might be the best video on the tubes for explaining frame data. Thanks a ton for the effort to put this. It’ll be my go to default for explaining frame data.
May be next guide that could be helpful with the frame would be the parry system to show how can we react differntly on different moves otherwise it was a good guide thank you !
11:43: And thats why Smash can be hard to learn and especially to master cuz of something I like to call "Inconsistent Consistentcy" the 2 best examples being the Grab frame data increasing after getting hit on Shield and your getup attack changing when your either facing your stomach or your back💀
Definitely a helpful guide to something that a lot of high-level players talk about that is kinda obscure to try and figure out if you're on your own. There's a lot to know about this game and a lot of times it feels like people assume you should already know it all, but this vid will hopefully help new players to understand what's going on (:
I do think it might be nice to include important/relevant links in the description though, so ultimateframedata.com for this one, and outofshield.com as suggested by banana in the discord. it's a small touch but it just makes everything a bit easier and more accessible
something a little more niche, item toss can actually be done out of sheild and that is pretty important to know for some characters and for some matchups, but it won't kill you if you don't know.
Im about a year into competitive smash nd there was some things in here i didnt know. this video was easy to understand and is going into my how to play smash playlist along with izaw's (yez) ' how to' series. I run it on repeat when i need background noise
I'd also recommend FrenzyLight specifically to learn combos and Vermanubis' SmashConceptions series. If you can speak French, Glutonny is a great teacher as well as being a top player.
Thanks for this information. I have had a very rough understanding of how frame data worked but this really clarified everything. I am a Roy main and I generally am able to stay in elite smash and when I play in person with others I am in the top 3 players. I think I could be a lot better if I had a better handle on Roy’s frame data as well as understanding my most common match ups. I would be interested in going through a couple of coaching lessons, as I would be very interested in getting a professional perspective and guiding on where I can improve and how
Another thing I'd like to add for us Ike mains is to watch out for out of shields options that are also ARMORED, just like Aether. Right now, only K. Rool's nair comes to mind, but watch out for anything of the sort, as sometimes reading frame data only isn't everything.
Thanks, that helps a ton! What still confuses me however, is how I'm supposed to read frame data for projectiles like Duck Hunt's side B or weird moves like the gunmen.
This was really useful! I didn't know that shielding a hit gave you 4 extra set frames for only grab, huh. But wasn't there something about multijabs on shield? I forget what it was but I recall people talking about frame safety decreasing once you get a certain number of hits...
Great video! Is there a way to train counting frames? If I knew exactly how long 5 frames was by feel, for example, I think my game would improve significantly.
This is a really great and simple to understand guide for how these weird numbers work. Thank you! So, here's a question, though. You said, the shield grab would be on frame 11 (when your grab is frame 7), when the shield is hit. Is this true for any move you got hit by? When I look at the frame data, I see that every move got a section for "shield stun". For Fox Nair there are 4 frames shield stun. 7 + 4 is 11, sure. But does this mean, if Fox hits my shield with Bair for example which has 9 frames shield stun, will my shield grab then start at frame 16 instead of 11?
Thanks so much for the great vid! My roommate is a zss and I was wondering if you have any tips on the match up, especially since your girl is a zss player. Thanks!
Give up on kill combos, focus on landing dash attack and bair mostly to secure stocks. Retreating bair is a good tool, you basically just have to play really good neutral a lot because she is very hard to keep in disadvantage
Does this mean that if I do a nair low enough to the ground, and hit their shield, I can follow up with another jump before their shield grab comes out?
For the first time in a while, a big, high-effort guide video! I get asked about this all the time, and I hope you guys find the information helful :) Let me know what you want me to cover next!
I just wanted to say a frame 6 grab can grab moves that are -9 or worse not -10 or worse. This because spotdodges are never frame 1.
@@HD-nb7kw this is definitely a good point!
a trick: you can watch movies on flixzone. Been using them for watching loads of movies recently.
@Jayce Jadiel yup, I've been watching on flixzone} for since december myself =)
That's the kind of video I wish existed when I started Smash. It came too late so I didn't learn much from it, but you've definitely filled a huge void, gonna show this to all the newcomers I come across
Thank you! Hopefully this helps some people!
I've been playing Smash for years, and I never really took the time to understand frame data. This guide helped alot, thanks Solo!
Nice vid. I would have liked to see a brief mention about spacing though. Just to help people understand that the raw data isn't the only thing to consider when deciding what you can and cannot punish with different oos options.

Bro. This is the video ive berm looking for for years. Best explanation on frame data and how to read it and most importantly, how to apply it!
absolutely incredible
no one ever makes videos explaining frame data because they assume that it's something anyone knows and it really upseted me

Bruh...this makes so much sense now 🤯
This was SO well explained. Like, everything you said was just SO much better executed and explained than all of the other vids I watched on RUclips. Thanks for that. 🙏
Thanks :) more to come

I’ve watched quite a few “frame data explained” videos for SSBU, and this one is easily the best I’ve seen. Thank you, and well done!
I thought I had the general concept down but clicked this video anyway and learned about shield drop and such. Good video.
Great explanation, and very entertaining. I've really been enjoying you coming back to youtube lately!
such a well made video. I usually get really bored watching this kind of vids but something about this one really grabbed my attention. Thank you!
Nice video! People are ignorant of frame data and now I have an easy way to explain it to them. I'll be sure to share this with my friends. All your explanations were concise and easy to follow.
This explains how to read frame data really well. I always understood the concept, but didn't know how to crunch the numbers at all. Thanks!
I've always struggled to improve in the game for 2 years because I never understood frames, but this video has taught me what I needed
when you were demonstrating the red "minus on shield" aspect of frame data, why do you start counting it frame by frame once the enemy who was shielding is able to move? Wouldn't "minus on shield" be just when the hitbox strikes the shield?
Wait until greninja mains appear and say that they can do side b out of shield
Definitely the best video I've seen to cover this. Great job!
One of the best videos I've seen explaining frame data.
Seen a bunch of videos on frame data, and this explained it the best, in my opinion.

Thanks so much for the feedback :)
I watched this video as a recap for myself and learned a lot of new info on how to read frames. Thanks.
I know this already but revitalizing my technique is why I'm here for this video.
Nice video SoloJones. Great breakdown and examples. I look forward to using this information.
This was amazing
Thank you
You are much too kind
I already knew a lot of this but still loved learning what I didn't know. Great video!
May be next guide that could be helpful with the frame would be the parry system to show how can we react differntly on different moves otherwise it was a good guide thank you !
Thanks so much I was really confused about all this, your guides help a lot of people man

Ill definitely check out frenzylight but unfortunately i can not speak french lol and tbh idk why im not watching gluttony already
Found you from MoS great video will definitely be using this info. Never knew about the frame data site.
Thanks for this information. I have had a very rough understanding of how frame data worked but this really clarified everything.

I already know all this intimately, why did I watch this video?
Because u luv me
the ol' spongegar animation. classic.
Thank you very much. ❤ needed this video. You break it all down. 🎃
Thank you this is a fantastic explainer
Woww. So helpful! And thoroughly explained! ❤
I now understand frame data thanks so much
Thanks, that helps a ton! What still confuses me however, is how I'm supposed to read frame data for projectiles like Duck Hunt's side B or weird moves like the gunmen.
Generally that is for the best possible scenario. For projectiles though it usually assumes point blank on your shield
Great vid
This was really useful! I didn't know that shielding a hit gave you 4 extra set frames for only grab, huh. But wasn't there something about multijabs on shield? I forget what it was but I recall people talking about frame safety decreasing once you get a certain number of hits...
If a multihit hits your shield a certain number of times (I think it’s 11?) you can roll out for free
@@SoloJones i didnt kno that, good 2 kno
Did you know a sub to Solo Jones RUclips will make you as handsome as the handsomest Ike main? Could be you!
I can be handsome and a genius? Say less.
Kinda late to the vid, but I love this video because I've made the decision to become better at smash bros and this helps
Great video! Is there a way to train counting frames? If I knew exactly how long 5 frames was by feel, for example, I think my game would improve significantly.
It’s all about the frames 😼
This is a really great and simple to understand guide for how these weird numbers work. Thank you!

Yes, for grab it always adds 4 frames (as far as I’m aware)

@@SoloJones thank you so much :)
Why do some on-shield options have 2 numbers listed?
Does this mean that if I do a nair low enough to the ground, and hit their shield, I can follow up with another jump before their shield grab comes out?
Yes! This is a really common bait you’ll see top level Ikes do
Fire Emblem: Three-Frame Jump Squat
what is a "match-up"?
Thanks, how does plus on shield work?
It means how many more frames you can act before your opponent. So the reverse of being negative on shield.
As a banjo main how do you beat Ike? I find it very difficult keeping him away let alone beating a top tier Ike player .
Watch my ft10 with Jplay!
