I know sir, it will take me years to learn how to play this song, my heart has been longing to play this piece. I haven’t read notes for 30 years and now I’m going back to piano lessons in beginners level & I’m not ashamed of it. Someday when I get back on track I hope I can play like you. Thank you so much for this! Makes us beginners to strive harder and learn. ♥️
The chords are relatively easy, but the right hand patterns are borderline randomness. This feels like one of those songs that's probably played slightly differently almost every time.
Yes, you're totally right. They're based on pretty standard chords but Billy added some extra voicings and transitions making it much more than simple arpeggiated chords. The notes played here are accurate to the original track from the stranger, but Billy definitely didn't play it spot on to this for every performance. The tutorial can be used as a guideline for how the song generally should sound, but feel free to play it in your own style with your own notes and voicings.
@MurdochPiano Sorry. I'm reading my original comment and realizing I was a bit ambiguous on the claim of random patterns. Specifically, I was referring to the patterns that Billy decided to play on the original album. As far as I can tell, when comparing this video to the isolated piano, the notes here are 100% accurate. You're right about the voicings. There are some parts, like the Cm walk down after the G, in which I can hear the deliberate voicings in the upper notes, and that seems to make sense in my brain. Then there are times, like when he goes back and forth between the Bb and Eb chords, where it seems like he's just playing off of feel. Almost like improvisation. That's definitely the hardest part of learning to play this exact. It's like "ok, he goes triad arpeggio up twice, then a few 3-1-5 arpeggios, into some 4-notes arpeggios etc." Honestly, I can't even think of another piece of music I've learned in which the arpeggio patterns were the most difficult things to memorize. Regardless, this transcription is, as far as I can tell, flawless. Almost shockingly accurate. I truly appreciate anytime someone uploads a video with the exact notes played on the album, as opposed to some rendition where the vocal line melody is thrown in. So, thank you and excellent job!
@@ThePsho For sure! While it definitely can make playing it back difficult, those aspects are part of why I love listening to and playing Billy's music so much. It has a pretty unique blend of genres that add so much to his music. I've definitely learned a lot from his style and incorporated a lot of that into my own playing. Regardless, glad you found the video helpful :)
I'm so glad you like it! When I heard the song, I thought Billy just played arpeggiated chords, but I was very wrong. He is a very advanced pianist and his compositions are very intricate. Although it means the tutorial was harder to make lol.
@@MurdochPiano How accurate would you say the arpeggios are to the original recording? It's really difficult to tell sometimes and there are seemingly hundreds of versions on RUclips. Yours seems the closest to my ear so far...
@@jco7551 I noticed that same thing when I searched for tutorials of this song before I made mine. I used the original piano track from the multitracks and spent a lot of time going through it more by note, so the arpeggios should be as accurate as they can be. Hopefully this helps.
@@MurdochPiano Well, your painstaking work is greatly appreciated. I don't think I'll be able to play it note-for-note but your transcription definitely helps to build my own arpeggios that at least sound close, even though they're a bit simpler. Cheers!
This one wasn't on the list, but all the next songs on my list were Queen, and I wanted to change things up a bit. (Not that I don't like Queen, there is just so much of it, and I want to diversify the channel). I love this song and the piano track that goes with it, so I decided I'd do it. I found the multitrack for the song too, so it should be 100% accurate to how Billy Joel plays it. Also, if you haven't before, check out some of Billy Joel's music! He's a great artist.
@@coldnights5048 I'm glad your understanding. When I realized my tutorials would be mostly Queen, I wanted to only do a Queen tutorial every other video at most. But now most of my subscribers are Queen fans (which is great, because Queen is my favorite band), but I'd like for other piano players to stick around and get what they like too, because when I started the channel, there were so many different kinds of tutorials. So once I complete my list, I'll probably go back to the 1 Queen tutorial every other video, at most so I can diversify the content.
