Here is theory a came up with a few months back that supports the “pancakes” argument however I now believe it is a combo of both “pancakes” and what is described in this video (Copy pasted from discord) In Ace Trainer Liam's video he half-jokingly proposed that "Puka the surfing Pikachu has Cataracts" and it got me thinking. Perhaps all aloan riachu's suffer from Cataracts. Both the high expourse to sunlight and high blood sugar increases the risk of Cataracts, and the loss of vison tends to cause the body to increase the alertness of other senses. So perhaps the riachu of aloa had psychic powers that got stronger and stronger as their vison deteriorated to make up for their imparied vison.
You know that makes sense and to add to the physic reasoning you know when let’s say you are in a car and close your eyes and bringing your knees to your chest and somewhat feels like you are in an infinite void and let’s say you go on a roller coaster and later like a week or more later when you lay on a bed or couch and you feel like your spinning and flipping around... and that’s what they are feeling it’s somewhat of a terrible physic representation of the world
Interesting Picchu also suffers negative effects from generating more electricity than it can handle I wonder if this relates to the prevalence of wild Picchu in Alola
Thing is high amounts of blood sugar can also make you feel more lethargic. So the pancakes could play multiple parts here. blood sugar actually can release large amounts of serotonin and dopamine which would actually mean that just by eating Raichu would be making itself happier and counteract stress. Which may mean that in alola, every time Raichu felt stress it would eat and conduct recreational activities to calm down. Over time, that means it would start to naturally evolve to handle that stress using these practices. Eating to calm down, and surfing to discharg, to the point it fully mastered it's stress response. The act of doing so would have very likely unlocked it's psychic typing because Raichu would have had to have mastered it's own mind in order to reach that point.
Alolan raichu’s eyes are also much paler than normal raichu, similar to blind people (I think, I’m not entirely sure if blind people all have pale eyes but all the forms of media that have blind people that I’ve seen have them with pale eyes…)
I like how most regional variants have pretty neat and/or logical explanations for how they came to exist, but for Raichu they just went "We don't know but maybe it was pancakes!" 🤣🐭🥞
What I love about that explanations is that the official explanation is "We have no idea, we think food and climate of Alola contribute" and while all the scientists are flooding Alola to do research to figure this out, the locals without a care in the world, just shrug and say pancakes.

Now this has been in debate for a long while, but I personally think Alola just hates the idea of Mega Evolution compared to Kalos and Hoenn who discovered, and later utilize it. Heck Kanto got dex entries for them and they weren't all this dark stuff, even on Pokémon who got Mega entries in Alola like Kangahskans. Considering M19 and heck Korrina's Lucario in the XY anime, I am willing to say the people of Alola hates Mega Evolution because they know the pain Mega Evolution causes and thus is often advised not to do. Though the other regions either turn the blind eye or believe the power of friendship can mitigate the effects (which they evidently do). It's quite interesting there is a _dash_ of conflict between two regions, aka like reality. You never see this often in the Pokémon games.
The Sword entry is scientific sure, but along with the much more relaxed//chill environment, a diet that isn't all berries, charred food, and sometimes lost to enemies in battles-i.e., "Fluffy Pancakes", could've helped Raichu develop the calmer side it unlocks in Alola.
Levitate would be so much better than Surge Surfer and I will never understand why they didn't give it to him, even as a hidden ability or something! Why would I waste a turn setting up electric terrain just to be faster? RAICHU'S ALREADY PRETTY DANG FAST.

I thought it was a reference to the Psychic surfing Pikachu (literally could psychically detect good surfing waves) from that one anime episode and the fact Pikachu loved pancakes in the series.

I would say that the massive de-stressing Aloa grant's Raichus plays the far bigger part in how the Picachus there evolve that form, the pancake helped it reached the finish line as it were

It actually could be. While Kantonian Raichu is constantly under the risk of electricity induced stress and has to discharge excess electricity, Alolan Raichu has full electro kinesis based powers. It controls all of its electricity with its mind and fires off star shaped thunderbolts thanks to its control.

I suspect that the Alolan Raichu evolved to look more like the pancakes that the locals began feeding them, as they transitioned from the wild to having trainers. same with the big, baby-like blue eyes. the cuter they looked, the more food they would receive from humans, allowing them to have many offspring, and in turn, to be caught by the humans.
The pokedex entry did say food as well. So pancakes could still play a part. But there are some clues to this new theory as well. First it's tail isn't sharp. As it no longer needs to penitrate the ground to discharge. Most likely the reason why it surfs is to regularly release safe amounts of electricity.

When Lockstin finished explaining the stress factor and turned to "how does being in Alola help?", my immediate thought was, MEDITATION. Imagine a Raichu just sitting on the beach at night, its tail dipped in the water and constantly discharging all its pent-up electricity, gazing at the sunset and taking in the stars overhead…so calm, it begins to contemplate thoughts it was never really able to ponder before, its mind opening up to the mysteries of the cosmos…it finds another Raichu to join it in this meditative pastime, and they have eggs, and teach their babies this technique of discharging electricity into the ocean while gazing at the stars, the warm, balmy air soothing their bodies so their minds can expand beyond the horizon…and slowly, over generations, the Pikachu families of Alola, after spending so long pondering life's wonders while totally relaxed and at ease, the physical stress of their typing soothed by the ocean waves, unlock their inner potential, and ascend to the form of psychic-type Pokémon.
As for the pancakes being referred many times, its possible that it could be part of the relaxing nature. Eating food can help ease stress and aggression. And nothing is more sweeter then the bite of a fresh made, fluffy pancake. So I feel thats how the pancake entry adds to it as well.
This could support the whole idea of surfing pikachu's, perhaps they naturally gravitate towards water as a self preservation method. Even more so for the whole surfer aesthetic of alolachu
The mix of surfing and not having to plant its tail in the ground could also explain its more blunt tail. The ears I guess could be to help against water impacts for when it falls off while surfing. Either way, I just like that it comes with a literal sun tan.
I was gonna wonder why regular Raichu isn't fighting type based on the aggression then. But I do remember the fabled Gorochu which was likely going to be fighting type as well. Would probably have played into the aggression angle even more I imagine. Still I think woulda been cool making them both dual type but they obviously weren't thinking that far out.
2 years late response but: I think its fair to say Raichu may get another forme because Meowth already has 2. As it stands now its not impossible to happen, but as of late nothing has happened so far.

I really like this idea for why Raichu became part Psychic My theory had been related to Akala Island and that the nectar on Akala island must've contained nutrients that heightened the mind which is how Akaka islands Orocorio is Psychic and possibly this nectar was a main ingredient in the syrup used in their pancakes which for certain Pokemon could unlock Psychic abilities deep within which is why Alolan's thought it was due to pancakes, but given Pikachu don't live on Akala island it was always a stretch of an idea
I guess that electricity... Move though it muscles and combination of stress make it own electricity. But take it an overflow of negativity? While in Alola with a more balanced diet and mentality switches from negative to positive.
I think there's another possibility for how they gain the psychic type: The relaxing nature of the Alolan region and it's tropical climate lets Raichu handle the stress of electrical buildup, instead of having to discharge it. Since they're keeping all that latent energy and overcoming the intense mental stress it causes, they naturally develop their psychic type. It would explain why only Alolan Pikachus evolve into that form: it's the only place they can calmly overcome such an intense level of stress.
I always figured that Alolan Raichu's psychic type occurred as a defensive adaptation against Sandyghast and Pallosand since they would be Pikachu and Raichu's natural predators due to being ground and ghost type. Sure, psychic may be weak against ghost but the Alolan Raichu's ability to float above the sand on its tail keeps it out of reach of the Sandyghasts and Pallosands. Admittedly, this is based on that one promotional image for Gen 7 that features a Sandyghast about to eat a Pikachu.
I'd like to think that pikaraichus just loved Alolan Pancakes so much they began to become psychic to be able to predict when the pancakes were done cooking.

This actually make sense think Japan is probably stressful at time since it is so big and a lot of people from Japan moves to or takes vacation in Hawaii so I like how they implemented that in Alolan Raichu. Raichu is from Kanto which is based off of Japan and Alola is based off of Hawaii and that's where Alolan Raichu comes from
Also Hawaii is associated with vacation. And vacations are chill and work is stressful. One's first thought would be that a vacation land would be less stressful than your home country simply because work is located in your home country.

I like this idea a lot, and I think that the psychic typing could also be attributed to the lack of stress. When stressed, you make quicker, potentially riskier decisions. A relaxed mind can evaluate slower and approach with wisdom, like an old surfing guru. the psychic type is a literal interpretation of that wisdom and clarity.
There’s some other possible evidence for “latent” psychic ability as well. While a dark type move rather than psychic, Pichu is one of the lucky few Pokémon able to learn Nasty Plot via level up. While much coarser in nature than, say, Calm Mind, the effect is similar in that it unlocks massive potential for offensive power (in let’s Go, Pikachu can learn Calm Mind as well) Also, while this may tie into having hands more than anything else, the Pikachu family has above average movepool compared to many electric types, learning moves such as Grass Knot Speaking of movepool, the fact that special individuals of the species can be taught to Surf and to even FLY implies a cleverness more akin to a psychic type than most electric types. And in Let’ Go Pikachu, your starter Pikachu is able to not only learn how to slash trees, traverse water, and get a Pilot’s License, but Flash is replaced by what I can only describe as Extrasensory Perception. Perhaps Raichu is capable of using its electric powers to stimulate BRAIN activity as well as muscle activity, and Alolan Raichu, in an environment with fewer potential predators, was able to “ease off” of its reliance on physical overcharge (which I also headcanon is why Pikachu can learn Volt Tackle if the parent held Light Ball: it learns to use its internal power to overclock a ramming attack, dealing incredibly damage). Thus, it loses 5 points of attack, and its body no longer can discharge on contact, but its new ease of mind lets it be more aware of its surroundings, and when an external electricity source is available via electric terrain, it can open its mind even further, and becomes incredibly nimble by surfing along the currents
I would think, also, that the whole Pichu/Pikachu/Raichu lint would have a greater empathetic, then perhaps psychic, ability due to the fact that Pichu evolve via friendship.
I mean, it really could have been pancakes. Pancakes have butter and sugar which are incredibly calorie dense. That along with the strong sunlight could have stimulated brain matter growth and pushed it to being psychic type

My grandpa had dimensions before he died and was type 1 diabetic, and I my dad was starting to lose his sense of self before he died and he had type 2 diabetes. As diabetes runs on both sides of my family, I'd best never eat sugar again...
I like how you animate the Pokemon stock pictures instead of just slapping them on there. It adds a nice bit of movement and helps make the Pokemon feel more alive.
I just started this video and I already love it because of the Lilo and Stitch reference in the first sentence, hawaiian roller coaster ride is my favorite song and it always puts a smile on my face.
Idea: Maybe in a more relaxed environment, Raichu don't need electricity to stimulate their muscles, and instead use electricity to stimulate their mind, leading to the psychic typing.

I thought the psychic type was due to the spiritual conception revolving around surfing is in Hawaii, since it ties to many rituals even with the art of surfing. From crafting the board to riding the wave, and even foreseeing the right time to ride the wave.
With the pancakes thing, it was mentioned that it was a special pancake recipe, so I think it was something in the pancakes(for caught Pokémon) plus the environment.
But binge eating especially sweet stuffs are also a way to cope with stress.. Maybe that's also a factor of why alolan raichu is part psychic type. Because it's now calm and entered a zen mode after binge eating pancakes... Or maybe the pancakes was made with CBD oil..
Pancakes is back 😂 i like that pancakes video - mostly the nutrition part of it. I think both theories are good and can be combined. You eat something sweat like "Pankaces!" when you are stressed so maybe when stressed Pikachus went to Alola eating pancakes and relaxing on beach helped him both better control his electrical energy and unlock psychic power

I mean, the Galar dex entry you referenced a couple times in this episode DID mention food, too, so there just may still be some validity to that pancakes thing. :P
An additional fact to support this theory, it's harder to build up static electricity in high humidity climates, I moved to a drier place when I was a teenager and got impressed by being shocked by static electricity and when I tell people from my home country about it they look at me as if I'm speaking crazy. Not only Raichu has a better way to release the excess electricity but it would take longer to get to that point.
There was an entire episode with Alolan Raichu and a pancake race. He works in a pancake restaurant with his trainer. It's precious and I love it. Sun and Moon anime was probably my favorite if them all.
we even see their psychic potential in the anime with the Surfs up Pikachu episode everything you've talked about still applies to the Pikachu in that episode

I suspect that the Alolan Raichu evolved to look more like the pancakes that the locals began feeding them, as they transitioned from the wild to having trainers. same with the big, baby-like blue eyes. the cuter they looked, the more food they would receive from humans, allowing them to have many offspring, and in turn, to be caught by the humans.
The pokedex entry did say food as well. So pancakes could still play a part. But there are some clues to this new theory as well. First it's tail isn't sharp. As it no longer needs to penitrate the ground to discharge. Most likely the reason why it surfs is to regularly release safe amounts of electricity.

Imagine a Raichu just sitting on the beach at night, its tail dipped in the water and constantly discharging all its pent-up electricity, gazing at the sunset and taking in the stars overhead…so calm, it begins to contemplate thoughts it was never really able to ponder before, its mind opening up to the mysteries of the cosmos…it finds another Raichu to join it in this meditative pastime, and they have eggs, and teach their babies this technique of discharging electricity into the ocean while gazing at the stars, the warm, balmy air soothing their bodies so their minds can expand beyond the horizon…and slowly, over generations, the Pikachu families of Alola, after spending so long pondering life's wonders while totally relaxed and at ease, the physical stress of their typing soothed by the ocean waves, unlock their inner potential, and ascend to the form of psychic-type Pokémon.

Eating food can help ease stress and aggression. And nothing is more sweeter then the bite of a fresh made, fluffy pancake. So I feel thats how the pancake entry adds to it as well.
This could support the whole idea of surfing pikachu's, perhaps they naturally gravitate towards water as a self preservation method. Even more so for the whole surfer aesthetic of alolachu

The mix of surfing and not having to plant its tail in the ground could also explain its more blunt tail. The ears I guess could be to help against water impacts for when it falls off while surfing.

I was gonna wonder why regular Raichu isn't fighting type based on the aggression then. But I do remember the fabled Gorochu which was likely going to be fighting type as well. Would probably have played into the aggression angle even more I imagine. Still I think woulda been cool making them both dual type but they obviously weren't thinking that far out.

I really like this idea for why Raichu became part Psychic
My theory had been related to Akala Island and that the nectar on Akala island must've contained nutrients that heightened the mind which is how Akaka islands Orocorio is Psychic and possibly this nectar was a main ingredient in the syrup used in their pancakes which for certain Pokemon could unlock Psychic abilities deep within which is why Alolan's thought it was due to pancakes, but given Pikachu don't live on Akala island it was always a stretch of an idea
If Alolan raichu is raichu minus stress than pancakes can still be a contributing factor. A warm soft pancake can make someone less stressed

I think there's another possibility for how they gain the psychic type: The relaxing nature of the Alolan region and it's tropical climate lets Raichu handle the stress of electrical buildup, instead of having to discharge it. Since they're keeping all that latent energy and overcoming the intense mental stress it causes, they naturally develop their psychic type.
It would explain why only Alolan Pikachus evolve into that form: it's the only place they can calmly overcome such an intense level of stress.

I always figured that Alolan Raichu's psychic type occurred as a defensive adaptation against Sandyghast and Pallosand since they would be Pikachu and Raichu's natural predators due to being ground and ghost type. Sure, psychic may be weak against ghost but the Alolan Raichu's ability to float above the sand on its tail keeps it out of reach of the Sandyghasts and Pallosands. Admittedly, this is based on that one promotional image for Gen 7 that features a Sandyghast about to eat a Pikachu.
I'd like to think that pikaraichus just loved Alolan Pancakes so much they began to become psychic to be able to predict when the pancakes were done cooking.

This actually make sense think Japan is probably stressful at time since it is so big and a lot of people from Japan moves to or takes vacation in Hawaii so I like how they implemented that in Alolan Raichu. Raichu is from Kanto which is based off of Japan and Alola is based off of Hawaii and that's where Alolan Raichu comes from
Also Hawaii is associated with vacation. And vacations are chill and work is stressful. One's first thought would be that a vacation land would be less stressful than your home country simply because work is located in your home country.

I have all 5 symptoms that you talked about REALLY bad. I just thought if was from a head injury I had during a school play. I like this idea a lot, and I think that the psychic typing could also be attributed to the lack of stress. When stressed, you make quicker, potentially riskier decisions. A relaxed mind can evaluate slower and approach with wisdom, like an old surfing guru. the psychic type is a literal interpretation of that wisdom and clarity.
There’s some other possible evidence for “latent” psychic ability as well. While a dark type move rather than psychic, Pichu is one of the lucky few Pokémon able to learn Nasty Plot via level up. While much coarser in nature than, say, Calm Mind, the effect is similar in that it unlocks massive potential for offensive power (in let’s Go, Pikachu can learn Calm Mind as well)
Also, while this may tie into having hands more than anything else, the Pikachu family has above average movepool compared to many electric types, learning moves such as Grass Knot
Speaking of movepool, the fact that special individuals of the species can be taught to Surf and to even FLY implies a cleverness more akin to a psychic type than most electric types. And in Let’ Go Pikachu, your starter Pikachu is able to not only learn how to slash trees, traverse water, and get a Pilot’s License, but Flash is replaced by what I can only describe as Extrasensory Perception.
Perhaps Raichu is capable of using its electric powers to stimulate BRAIN activity as well as muscle activity, and Alolan Raichu, in an environment with fewer potential predators, was able to “ease off” of its reliance on physical overcharge (which I also headcanon is why Pikachu can learn Volt Tackle if the parent held Light Ball: it learns to use its internal power to overclock a ramming attack, dealing incredibly damage). Thus, it loses 5 points of attack, and its body no longer can discharge on contact, but its new ease of mind lets it be more aware of its surroundings, and when an external electricity source is available via electric terrain, it can open its mind even further, and becomes incredibly nimble by surfing along the currents
I would think, also, that the whole Pichu/Pikachu/Raichu lint would have a greater empathetic, then perhaps psychic, ability due to the fact that Pichu evolve via friendship.
Also Pikachu talks in pokemon the movie I choose you, maybe that was a sign of psychic potential, mewtwo, hoopa and slowking can talk
I mean, it really could have been pancakes. Pancakes have butter and sugar which are incredibly calorie dense. That along with the strong sunlight could have stimulated brain matter growth and pushed it to being psychic type

My grandpa had dimensions before he died and was type 1 diabetic, and I my dad was starting to lose his sense of self before he died and he had type 2 diabetes. I just started this video and I already love it because of the Lilo and Stitch reference in the first sentence, hawaiian roller coaster ride is my favorite song and it always puts a smile on my face.
Idea: Maybe in a more relaxed environment, Raichu don't need electricity to stimulate their muscles, and instead use electricity to stimulate their mind, leading to the psychic typing.

I thought the psychic type was due to the spiritual conception revolving around surfing is in Hawaii, since it ties to many rituals even with the art of surfing. From crafting the board to riding the wave, and even foreseeing the right time to ride the wave.
With the pancakes thing, it was mentioned that it was a special pancake recipe, so I think it was something in the pancakes(for caught Pokémon) plus the environment.
But binge eating especially sweet stuffs are also a way to cope with stress.. Maybe that's also a factor of why alolan raichu is part psychic type. Because it's now calm and entered a zen mode after binge eating pancakes... Or maybe the pancakes was made with CBD oil..

An additional fact to support this theory, it's harder to build up static electricity in high humidity climates, I moved to a drier place when I was a teenager and got impressed by being shocked by static electricity and when I tell people from my home country about it they look at me as if I'm speaking crazy. Not only Raichu has a better way to release the excess electricity but it would take longer to get to that point.
