Well, even the USA uses metric in every science and discipline that requires precision. Thus, many engineers are forced to use both. Metric for accuracy, and imperial to explain the measurements to their boss/clients/contractors
I study mechanical engineering in Brazil and i still need to learn freaking imperial for some american blueprints for stuff, it makes me sad. Even in autocad theres a Drop down menu for choosing your measurement for the unit of light and there are 2 options: "universal" and "aMeRiCaN" exactly for the reason you mentioned
engineers r in gingerpales comment section now?
Well in primary school when ever i study the metric system my brain instanty mixes both metric and imperial system
Which implies that the only reason to use imperial is for people that haven't learned metric ergo if you just teach metric in schools the problem is gone in 3 generations maximum.

You can accurately estimate the current temperature in F° by counting the chirps of crickets in 14 seconds then add 40. I don't know how that work either
Let’s be real it makes more sense for weather. Like dang 10 degrees outside?? That’s like 10% hot as in very cold like 10 is not a big number. 100 degrees is real hot; that’s a big number. In Celsius, 100 is STUPID hot and somehow so is 40 degrees
Celsius is based on water. I don’t know how water be feeling
@@dianarojo-jewell6091 Note: you should never describe either Fahrenheit or Celsius in terms of percentages or multiples. 20 degrees in either measurement is not twice as hot as 10 degrees in the same measurement. Only Kelvin and Rankine are appropriate measurements of temperature, and as it turns out, most people don't use either of them because they're horrible at describing how hot it is outside.
You can find the total number of degrees inside a ploygon by taking the number of sides, subtracting 2 and multiplying by 180 I think. Might have gotten some parts wrong

Hello
What’s bonkers is that in America you grow up learning imperial and then learn metric for like a week and then be expected to remember all the conversions for both
America will do anything to not use the metric system
We used both like all the time we don't use yards we just used meters instead and centimeters it was confusing
boom logic
Nobody actually expects you to memorize the conversions, because nobody uses metric unless they need it for work (like an engineer) or to pass a test in science class. You memorize it for that week and then forget it. This is normal and basically an expected given.
But metric is easy as fk, just go by 10's
America : Haha, you can remember how many feet are in a mile by saying “Five tomatoes” because it sounds like 5 2 8 0 :) we’re so smart
The entire rest of the globe : 10. That’s how we remember

Once in physics class we were looking at textbook questions and one of the questions used inches instead of centimeters. I asked the teacher about it and he got unreasonably angry. He went on a rant about how stupid the imperial system was to the entire class and everyone just agreed
@@ezekielrauch3703 sorry did I give that impression? No we just nodded awkwardly cause he goes on rants a lot and it’s best just to agree.

imperial what now?
Honestly I don’t think anyone i know in the US would mind converting to metric. It just makes sense for everyone to be on the same page xD sure relearning it might be hard at first but it’s the first step that’s always the hardest.
as someone who had to get used to different currencies, I can say it's easy. You get lost for the first week or so and then you just divide or multiply by the rate. Metric is even easier since the rate doesn't change.
I know multiple old people who flip over the thought of having to learn anything new but they're garbage racists so eh.
It would be stupid expensive too.
I can't do metric, imperial is so simple and easy to understand. Everything being the same with a different prefix to denote size is just madness I will never be able to put my head around.
Plus you would just cause total chaos on the streets, people would be guessing at what speed to go if signs became metric. They aren't gonna buy new cars will use old ones with imperial speedometers.
@@domehammer 2 things
1: Even if you don't want to memorize what the prefixes mean, really all you have to memorize is the order, in everyday life most people just use millimeters, centimeters, meters, and kilometers because thats usually enough. Same with weight, ect
2: just buy a new speedometer instead of a new car lmao
Really the biggest hurdle would be converting from Fahrenheit to Celsius since thats one of the few imperial system numbers that'll actually be ingrained in people's heads, a lot of thermostats and ovens here in Canada STILL use Fahrenheit despite us being a metric country.
Most Americans I've met who swapped over to metric have described it as "surprisingly smooth"
It's not learning a new language, it's just learning to count to 10 again
2:46 Fun fact about that Air Canada flight: They found out about their low fuel situation mid-air, and like most people, went to the manual to see what to do. However, the writers of that manual just kinda... never included what to do when your plane has no fuel. They were then directed to another airport, but realized they didn't have enough fuel to get there.
Fortunately, the pilot knew of an abandoned airstrip, and tried landing there. However, turns out that the airstrip had been converted. Into a drag racing strip. Where currently. There is a drag race going on.
Fortunately, the plane was able to land, despite the fact that the front landing gear didn't lock in place and went back into the plane, it actually caused the plane to lower on the ground, and the friction helped stop the plane, so yay!
That was one heck of a story.

now that I think about it, saying "the length of a football field" is the most American thing
Football fields are 100yards, so when they say football fields, it’s a general reference because most people have a pretty good sense of how big a football field is, rather than being told a arbitrary figure in its 2 tenth power

Almost everyone: USE METRIC SYSTEM
Americanes: *NO!*

americans : cuz we aren't sheeps
I mean America uses metric for international affairs (science, business, etc.) just not locally
Besides that's changing too, just slowly, "inch by inch" if you will
Additionally when you tell someone to do something they're quite unlikely to listen, this isn't an American trait, it's a human trait, the only reason I listen and try to use both is because no one told me too, I just learned in in school
Plus it's not exactly easy for me, sure conversions are easy, but to me I don't have a good idea what a Kg feels like, what a km looks like
Life is more than just raw data, it's also how the brain uses that data
(addionally the only downside is that metric is unnatural and must be taught, since humans are wired to count, measure and perceive in multiples, not units, this is likely evolutionary because oh what's the difference between 51 and 50 wolves, well not much
But 1 or 2 wolves is either bad or 100% worse)
One of the biggest annoyances about metric harkers is that they completely forgot that science tells us why the US is taking so long, give us time and be nicer and it'll probably happen sooner
@@Sip_Dhit "addionally the only downside is that metric is unnatural and must be taught..."
I don't know if you're aware but you were taught how imperial works as well, people don't slide out of the womb with the innate knowledge of how many inches go into a foot go into a yard go into a mile, if you're talking about what's easier to understand then I'd say multiples of ten are comparatively pretty simple to get your head around. Remarks like that are part of why people make fun of Americans that defend imperial in the first place; they're seemingly born entirely out of the fact you know one system because it was taught to you in grade school and barely even knew what the other system was until you were a teenager at the earliest, of course you think imperial is more intuitive (the other part that gets them mocked is that they're usually much more obnoxious at getting their point across because differing opinions on arbitrary systems make people extremely defensive).
Like, I can even empathise with your struggle to visualise and convert from imperial to metric naturally; I grew up in a household that uses feet and stone despite living in a country that entirely uses metric, but even then metric is _leagues_ easier to grasp because you literally only need to learn one unit and you can convert it up and down by shifting the decimal point, it's not remotely "unnatural" (or at least no less natural than any other system of measurement).
@@theundeadgentleman4998 In my humble opinion, the Imperial system is best for the layman. How long is an inch? about the first digit of your thumb, or three barleycorns. A yard? three feet. A quart? Four cups. An English mile? 1000 paces. How would you visualise litres, centimetres and kilograms?

It is literally the English's fault America uses the imperial system! when being sent over the uk required, we use Imperial, and we never switched because there wasn't really any good alternatives + it was a good way to stick it to the kings who came up with new systems.
I'm out here learning that there are measurements called "stone" and "short-hundred" and I'm American.
Yeah no one in america uses those
yeah it's a British thing
You're forgetting temperatures. (and also kelvin... because having two temperature units wasn't confusing enough!)
Eh kelvin is only used by space folks and them idk
Kelvin is just Celsius with about 300 added on top :) It's just there cause scientists wanted to start from zero (the absolute cold of 0 kelvin)
@@Cibershadow2 273.15 to be precise, also kelvin is used a lot in physics, especially when we talk about energy and transfer of it.
and I'm not talking about rocket physics here, but for example ventilation and heating of buildings, furnaces in smelters, and much more.
@@bird-war well kelvin is also used for the warmth of light
Fahrenheit is pretty easy, it’s just what percent the temperature feels to you, so something 20% hot would feel pretty cold, and something 90% hit would be pretty warm
This has taught me more about measurement than school will ever.
If truly does then you are in a sad education system.
they teach you it in 5th grade and they go a little more in depth than gpapi here so you probably have the worst school system in history
Is your school in a dumpster? How is your education that bad, lol.
That’s your fault lmao
I love the video, but I’d recommend looking at Jan misali’s video on the imperial system for a more comprehensive debate

As an American there is no better feeling than when you are able to quickly convert imperial to metric in your head and impress all your friends
As a non-american I am glad that I do not use imperial
Do they also get impressed when you can read any clocks (analogic and digital, as well as both 24h and 12h formats)?

I just learned this in school today lol
I’m legit learning this in my construction tech class right now, I thought I had to study for the test but all I had to do was watch a gingerpale video
My company lost about $30,000 USD, because the order was placed in imperial, and sent to a factory in Canada to fabricate. The material was made with metric measurements, and was useless.
As an American who doesn’t use the metric system I can confidently say, that metric is way better
Same
honestly I think the main problem is that american schools don't really teach the metric system, only the imperial system, so if people who spent most of their lives using imperial tried to switch they would give up. It's like learning a new language: no matter if you fail or succeed, you will go mentally insane
@@doomclasher9287 lmao what? All American schools teach physics and chemistry in metric system. Or at least in California where I am.
Schools expect all students to understand both metric and imperial. It’s just that normal Americans (excluding STEM majors) use imperial on a daily basis and gradually forget about the metric
@@doomclasher9287 They do. I'm still more used to feet and Farenheit, but math is all about meters and centimeters. At least in my classes
Back to my first physics class: the professor was intruducing us to the class and metric system, he said: "there are also other measuring systems used by other countries, for example some uses inches... but those are uncivilized countries so we're not using those..."
I loved that professor
ironically we have invented more stuff than you, get rekt

people: metric is so much better come on America
America: who would have to spend more money than it's worth converting everything to Metric
*Britain sipping tea in the background watching the Americans get bullied over something they did*
to be fair imperial was meant to be relative, like feet was the size of the King/Queen's foot and an inch was defined by the master craftsman in charge of a construction site.. we knew it was convoluted when we made it all up..
they kinda already use metric for their machines ,and stuff , but most people dont know that , so I think it would be worth it and a lot easier to teach kids that is for sure.
@@lavaot5207 kids are taught both systems of measurement, and it's use in machines is because it's more beneficial there due to foreign parts being measured in metric, but switching over many things like different street signs that deal with distance would end up being pretty expensive
Weird thing: I came back to this video as I was watching an Air Disaster video about air Canada flight crash, and I was like “WAIT, Ginger told me about this!”
It took me a month in school to learn this while i just learned all of that in 10 minutes while happy and without stress
we took like 1 class but can I say that whoever meters with inches and foot within height is a complete lunatic sorry I just really hate that way of telling height

I have never met a single person who uses stones as measurements, everyone always just skips straight from pounds to tons, which by the way it's 2000 pounds in a ton. And most people are cool with just saying, "2,902 pounds"
British people use it for their weight. 1 stone=14 lbs=6.35 kg
Avery Barten
Also, most people skip yards completely and go straight from feet to miles, which by the way, it's 5280 feet in a mile.
