- Making the second ascent of Robbie Phillips' E10 'What We Do in the Shadows' E10 7a, on the same day Robbie made the first ascent. To me this is a nice story of sharing a hard project and being suitably inspired by a friend's performance.

That was a good day! :D I've said it before, but it was genuinely a privilege to get to share this climb with you :) I knew you were ready in 2020 and told to you to just get it done, but you were cool as a cucumber and said you'd happily wait... I remember thinking "what a hero!". I hope we can share more climbs like this one soon Dave, and amazing work on the film - they compliment each other well.
:3
what an absolute gent! You're both a couple of banging climbers, a proper route that is 🤙
Dave saw the send train coming into the station, and made sure he’s on it even though he didn’t have a ticket.
Great stuff.
I love how Dave didn't steal the FA even though He almost definitely could have the year before. He plays it down like he wasn't ready but he knows he could have sent it back then. It just wouldn't have been right to steal a man's FA after what Robbie was going through. Good stuff.
Was thinking the same thing :)
absolutely, what a top bloke
In a world where respect and curtesy are becoming more and more rare, It's wonderful to see both of those in action. Not that I would expect less from a man like Dave.
The shot of you chatting to us while Robbie's TRing the route behind you felt like a shot out of a Wes Anderson film or something! Always appreciate your videos Dave.
What time is that shot?
@@highvoltageboys probably 5:30
Hah yeah! Squarely framed and narrating into the camera while something's happening in the background. Like the narrator from Moonrise Kingdom. ruclips.net/video/eBfgNVTGhCM/видео.html
Most impressive thing; that Dave left the climb for his friend to finish when he could have completed it himself. Says more about the man than his climbing imo.
Excellent storytelling in this one Dave! 🙌
Great work Robbie & Dave! When you don't expect to send, it's somehow easier on the mind and you surprise yourself. Also, as Jerry Moffat said: if you don't let go, you can't fall off!
A just a casual "gotta take my daughter mountain biking now" haha. Beautiful climb Robbie and Dave. Its always inspiring to see you fight through such hard routes.
Robbie sends multiyear proj:
"YESSS WHOOO FUCK YES FUCK YES OH MY GOD"
Dave sends multiyear proj:
[modest chuckle]
Awesome Dave! Send trains are a fascinating aspect of climbing. I'm sure there is a sport psychologist out there that could explain it. My suspicion is that there is something in our monkey brains that once we see something is possible it allows us to make that leap ourselves. Similar to repeating a route from years ago where you can't quite remember all the moves but knowing that you have done it previously gives you that extra 10% to cling on. Great work.
Awesome send! I also love the contrast with Dave's calm narration meandering through the video being interspersed with Robbie shouting and swearing at the top of his voice :)
Dave tons of respect that you waited even though you were ready to take the climb down. And thanks for showing us that experience pulls through even at the tough times. Cheers.
Great job putting this together Dave, was amazing to watch on the day! Fantastic Edit.
Great video, I love your simple stuff like this, just climbing story with a voice over
Idk why but hearing Robbie swear with his accent was so satisfying for me
Haha, ah yes, giving swearwords torque is one of Scotlands many talents!
Absolutely loved this video. Great content, great production, and great climbers. I especially love your attitude and the fact that you wear a helmet. Thank you for this, Dave! I feel like I really learn a lot from your process.
You're a beast man, nice to see the joy in your eyes when you send it.
I'm happy to see you climbing with Robbie, the two of you make a good team!
This was like an audiobook of a climbing novel or something. Very entertaining. Thank you for your videos Dave. Eres el jefe perro!
Another great film. Really enjoyed seeing you crack that one; congrats
Absolute brilliant 😎 top guy giving Robbie the first ascent, especially under the circumstances. Respect 🙏
You couldnae have any better surroundings too. Stunning scenery mate. Great climb. Congratulations both. 💪💪💪🤸🤸🤸
"Don't let go!" I'll have to try harder to remember that one 🤣. Thanks for the words of wisdom Dave!!
Loved this piece, and Robbie's too. Winter is here now (I live in the Canadian Rockies), and nothing motivates me to go for a walk in the -10C with the tools like your videos Dave. Thanks for the endless inspriation.
Amazing repeat and thanks for introducing me to Robbie's channel.
Legend! A great lesson in ‘try hard’. Thanks Dave!!
Super fun to see you and Robbie climbing together. I was in Scotland, south in Peebles, but always wanted to head north and didn't get the chance. If you ever need someone to belay you, I'll do it! So inspiring to see you two working and completing a route together. Also I enjoyed you both dropping the video at the same time. Thanks for the inspiration, example, and artistry you bring to the sport. All the best to you.
I love to see that instead of taking the toehook swing, you Just used the momentum to go for the next hold. That would be something for @udini
I luv this video! Robbie is super rad!
"When someone is invites you to try a hard project YES is the only correct answer." Best climbing quote of the year :)
Great job, congrats Dave!! And always fun to hear Robbie swear like there's no tomorrow 😀.
two amazing climbing videos releasing at the same time ... YES !!!! 👍🥳🤙👊
Dave, a fantastic and inspirational video of 2 guys with the bit between your teeth. Great inclusion of the before pandemic to where you are now, thousands of climbers will be in the same boat, but thank you guys for the great video in a beautiful setting🧗🏻
Another belter of a film.
Well done!!
Yesss, I wondered if there’s be a video about this
Well done man! I always find I perform best when I put the least expectations upon myself.
As others have already said, this was a real treat!
Nice story telling leading to a happy ending!
I loved this Dave, congrats on sending and the film! 💛
Big Fan bro. Always smiling and in great physical condition. Keep it up!
Aw, That was awesome! nice send to both of you :)
> the sequences were so different, it almost felt like two different routes
Interesting… Despite the fact, the route was at a similar difficulty overall for you two? That's a beauty!
Well done, despite the pandemic and lockdown!
This is one proper attempt! Congrats for a beautiful send
What a great story. Thanks for sharing. Well done.
Chooo chooO! All aboard the send train!
Epic video! Always the best climbing content. Cant wait for robbies vid.

awesome stuff. good lesson in going for it even when it seems unlikely.
Absolutely killer video!
Great story and inspiring climbing!
As always, super inspiring !
Sometimes all you really need to think is just 'don't let go' - such a great and simple piece of advice Dave. Congrats to you on another great climb and thanks for the video. Any plans to team up with Robbie or anyone else on a big project next year? Maybe 'Lexicon' in the Lakes?
Dave at 0:14 you have grigri in the cam bellow you. There must be some reason for that, security perhaps or just rope management to keep you near the wall? As always another awesome vid!!
The latter. It pins the rope in to such a steep wall to make it easier to pull on to hard moves.
One of my hardest ascents I did after a night with almost no sleep, just thinking alright just a little go in my Projekt before a nap...
Lovely film this!
thanks for the video. i enjoied it
SICK!!!👏🏼👏🏼🏴
Inspirational
Brilliant!😄
Inspirational 🌟🌟🌟🌟🌟
Another awesome video and story! thank you!
What happened to the toehook cut loose beta? It seemed on the send go that there was no cut loose :)
Edit looking sick
choo choo! all aboard the send train
Only Dave could accidentally climb an E10
Awesome send! What is the song name during the send?
Lovely. Curious to hear what the diet tweaks are?
It was my second carnivore diet experiment. Round three coming up soon...
@@climbermacleod Ah ok, thanks. Hope you'll tell us more in a separate video. Starting keto partly after watching your fascinating video, so any other insights and reflecting, I'll take.
Great climb, great story. I am wondering about the style; in both cases it looks like neither placed any gear with the rope running up to the top pieces. Does that go down as a Yo-yo, pinkpoint or what? Thanks to whoever shares this info.
All gear placed on lead by both of us without weighting the rope. I am placing the top gear at 8:10 and then climbed back down.
Scotland's finest!
Sick trad climbing!
♥️😁🇬🇧top film
Pretty humbling to see Dave MacLeod thanking Robbie for the psyche, two Scottish titans of the sport 'fist-bumping'
loved the video, just not the language, can't share with my kids. Still appreciate you sharing
Congratulations man! I have noted in my own climbing that I tend to climb a lot more securely on lead in general than I do on top rope, especially on trad but even on indoor sport. I suspect this is echoes of my fear of falling creeping in subconsiously and making me hyper focus more on my body position and movement - just ever so slightly more risk averse in each movement so I look for a higher quality of security on each hold / movement (I am just guessing as it's not a concious thing). Obviously as a mere mortal this is very different to your level but I can totally relate to "not feeling all that confident on top rope attempts, felt absolutely solid on lead" and it's always unexpected!
The Magnus effect ...
Dave, I’m curious as to what exactly these “lockdowns” were. Were you not allowed to go outside at all?
Yes but only near the house.
@@climbermacleod was this strictly I’m enforced with fines and police? Here in the US, our lockdowns never kept me from going anywhere outside. I wouldn’t listen anyway if they told me I wasn’t allowed outside to climb lol
💪💪💪👏👏👏👏
Robbie is expert in the old Anglo Saxon 😂
That is what he does in the shadows 😂.
💪💪💪👊❤
Great video! Not a fan of the music choice though
Fucking A
is one of Robbie's attributes 'bad language'? ;)
Nice climb but terrible music.
