I have a 9mo old german shepherd.i found out she has her moments on behavior issues.i still think shes teething loves chewing on everything .i went and got stuff for dogs to stop chewing on things (doesnt work at all )shes got chew toys big bones plastice bottles .but still want to get shoes. Laundry even gets in the trash .how do i make her stop all of this .when i put her out for timeout she wont stay .and when i put her in timeout i exsplain to her its bad and you dont get a treat .shes very loveable loves attention and she gets it all the time my question is what am i doing wrong ..my nehew got a german shepherd also shes 3 yrs old minds very well .i just dont understand why his minds and im having a hard time with mine .is it because of there age growing out of it .please help me with any suggestions.this dog is spoilt i love her so much
I started place training way too late. As in i should have done it from day one of getting him. Hes 1 now and ive started doing place training. And it took 2 days and the excessive obnoxious barking has almost ceased. He hardly barked at the mail man. Place training has been the unexpected best tool for improving his manners and behaviour
every single time my puppy does something new that i want to know how to manage or teach her to do/ stop doing, Rachel uploads the answer like clockwork, seriously THANK YOU! my maltipoo is only 3 months old and i’ve only had her for 1 1/2 months and this young lady’s vidoes have helped me with crate training, sit and down commands, and even about my pets nutrition.. WOW she deserves an award🙌🏼
I just wanted to pop on here to really thank you for making this video. I purchased a 5-month-old puppy about 6 weeks ago and this is my first puppy in my adult portion of my 52 years. I did have three other dogs that I didn't love half as much as I love this little girl and I hate to say that. But, to the point lol, I subscribed to many many dog content creators. So far, all the ones that I joined are really good as well as you. But, I wanted to say that place can be a strange concept to understand. I was wondering why I would want my dog to go sit there in a specific place when I tell them to as opposed to just go sit. The way you explained it and put so much clarity into it and value on it for the dog to have a place to go that makes her safe and free and comfortable and all of those things, no one else has done that. I can't explain to you how good this video made me feel. Thank you once again and keep up the good work.
I’ve learned a lot about timing of rewarding from these videos. Like rewarding mid-stream, or not right after he got back on place. It makes so much sense, but I didn’t think of it before this.
I am using the lid to a large plastic tool / storage chest from Home Depot. It’s off the floor a couple of inches, a definite place, moveable too. Works for my11 wk old pup who wants to chew everything. She learned Down today. Did it 30 times, and then did Down in other rooms without the lid and without treats, just my praise. Yay!
Hi Rachel! I have been watching your videos for a while now. I am preparing to get my first pup! I’m curious what your take is on working different shifts. My s/o and I want to get a puppy and we are prepared to do what we have to in order to be successful pet parents but I am concerned how it will go with us working complete opposite shifts. (I work nights 3 days a week and he is days 5 days a week at home). How do we navigate keeping the puppy on a schedule or is that not as important? I know the bathroom schedule is important but will it disrupt his normal behaviors and learning if I’m awake at night sometimes? Do I let him alone, what if he hears me and wakes up? Thank you!! 🥰
I’m glad he got off because that’s realistically what will happen at first and now we can see how you handled it! I love how dogs learn from positive repetition rather than negative reprimands. Thank you for your videos.
How do you conditioned them with the command "FREE"? Can you make a video on it? I've seen other videos on using "YES" and "FREE" (continuous reward vs terminal reward). It's a little confusing on this area. Hope to hear from you soon!
Ohh my goodness- I’ve loved your videos for years Rachel and have been following Wally’s journey since the day you and your mum bought him home- I haven’t watched a video for a while- can’t believe how BIG HE IS now 💜😱 And, super excited about this video! Bringing our puppy home soon and will definitely be training for ‘place’ command. x
All your treats and toys ,love the crates you reference but super $$$!$$ I don’t work any more so no longer good money , but for people who have it , they are all wonderful
This is exactly what I needed! I’ve been wanting to start touching my puppy a place command but didn’t know how to start. My puppy is starting to get big and gets in the way during meal times and jumping when people come over.
It is actually most helpful when your dog makes a mistake. Otherwise we have no idea what to do when our dog does. Also could you show how you would do things like this with their raw food dinner.
I saw a few videos of a golden retriever breeder here in RUclips and she feeds the puppies a raw diet whilst training them. She hand feeds the puppies the raw meat. Hand feeding is actually a good method of teaching your puppy/dog how to NOT resource guard. But in the case of training the “place” command, you could wear gloves while you hand feed if you don’t want to touch the raw meat.
Rachel!! LOVE your videos. Thank you so much for educating the community. How do I treat the tear stains of my puppy? Please please let me know a more natural way to treat them. I don’t want to use commercial stain removers with lot of chemicals on him.
Absolutely love your videos! In this video you said you would demonstrate how to release your dog but I believe you forgot! Do you have a video showing how to do that?
Great video as always, I am very excited to try this with my puppy. Could you add how you teach FREE or RELEASE in another video? I want to make sure I know how to do that before teaching PLACE. Thanks!
Hi Rachel -- thanks for your videos; they're super helpful! I was just wondering when you would use "place" to get your dog on a dog bed vs when you would want them to go in their crate, and how does your dog know to distinguish between the two in different scenarios? Thank you!!
I absolutely love your videos. They've been so helpful training my pup. Quick question-I know you posted a video about the Whistle Go tracer a year or so ago, but was wondering if you would still recommend them? Thanks!
Can Place be used instead of a crate or in place of a crate? I have a Great Pyrenees puppy and the size of crate that will be needed is more than I'm able to handle. It really isn't feasible to take a XXL crate with us in our camper either, which we camp very often.
i have a kelpie x broder collie puppy that i got 2 days ago, she is 10 weeks old and she has come from a big farm. she loves eating all the plant in the backyard when she goes out for potty and playtime. How do i get her to stop biting plants??
How to have puppy stay in place and only get out after release command? I think this video focuses on how to condition the dog to love the “place” but how to make them stay until release? Can you please do another video on that? My dog will jump off once there is distractions 😆
Great video! I have a question ... How does the puppy/dog know when you want him to go to the place mat? Like what do you call the place mat when asking or telling him to go and stay on it? Hope that question makes sense.
I have found your channel to be the most helpful of any out there. Thank you! Any thoughts on an unruly, jumping, hard biting, 4 month old English Shepherd? My rescued Maltese is having problems with being attacked, and I have to carry him up high for to go outside! I know he’s mad because he peed on a pole while he and I were in the basement without the puppy.I feel so sorry for him!
I ha ve a 2 yr old that hasn’t been adequately socialized and therefore occasionally lets out a bark for no obvious reason. … or a kid could bump the wall, ll etc. How do i teach not to bark at random houehold noises? 8:58
Hi I know this is the topic but what is your opinion in neutering I have mini schnauzer really don’t want do it but everybody recommends do it even vet thanks .
Question, how do you go through so many treats with him. We’ve been told not to give many treats due to calories, it looks like you went through quite a bit of the bag. Genuine question. Thank you!
This video was awesome. How old was the dog in this video. ? I have a 10 week old pomapoo that I’m getting thru with 1-2 commands so far but definitely want to get to this position
I tell my Cavapoo pups, Daisy age 2 and Poppy 1yr., go on your bed. They are pretty used to it. How do I switch name of bed to place? Or is it even necessary to change?
Hi Rachel my name is Anaisha and you give a big help. make your wishes come true and dreams are big and your puppies are so cute also I have small dog and his name is fantasy he is 1 ......I am a child
Hi there, new to your videos! Very helpful. My question is, how do you get them not to run off as soon as they get their treat? Do you just keep repeating the command?
Does the place command apply to the area, or the mat? If I move the mat to another part of the room, will my dog go to that new place? Or does it require retraining?
I'm pretty sure it's the mat he/she will follow. But to be sure try putting it on different places and placing the cue after the relocation. My dog got it after a few tries bit everydog is different.
My question is how do they get the food out of them little tight containers because it looks very frustrating to me they struggled to get the food out.
We will be getting our new puppy (she's a Miniature Dachshund) around the beginning of May. I have been watching your training videos regarding marker words. I have been curious as to how you initially teach these words. I was happy to see this one available for viewing. However, regarding words like 'Sit", how do you start training them to understand what you want?
Idk if you still want to know this, but you can lure them using food, just hold it above their nose and move back over their head until their butt touches the floor, I'd practice luring without using the word until they can do it pretty consistently or you think they understand the concept, then lure and say the word, you can gradually reduce the lure and then the motion - most dogs get sit pretty easily. Or you can catch sitting on their own and rewarding them then and they'll naturally offer the behaviour after a while.
Silly question! My pup just turned 7 months can he easily learn this then early on at 9 weeks ? He’s very obedient he’s been in training since nine weeks so I’m not nervous I’m teaching him please but I’m very interested and eager to learn and teach my pup . I know it won’t happen over night . I’m sure the answer is yes lol GREAT video btw !!! You’re amazing for providing such amazing information!! Thank you !!
You said that you would discuss how you teach “free,” but I didn’t see that. Is there another video somewhere that discusses this? Also- can you please go in greater detail about “not repeating,” commands. I know that generally commands should only be said once. But during the training process- teaching such things as “stay,”- but they get up quickly and follow. How do you prevent repeating the command but still communicating yo the dog that you expect him to stay, without saying “stay?”
I have the same black and white place mat from Target that you have but the problem I have is that my puppy just chews and shakes it from side to side. 🤦♀️ He won’t sit or lay on it. Just plays with it. I even tried a towel but he does the same thing with a towel. He can’t have a dog bed either bc he just chews on it constantly and won’t lay down and relax on it. I hope he grows out of it. He’s almost 6 months.
If I tell my dog place i reward and tell him break to release him. If he goes on to place by his own choice does he then get off by his own choice. If that makes sense lol if I tell him place he must wait for my release. If he chooses place then no release needed? Ty ❤
Hi Rachel I am sorry that I am just getting around to listening to this particular video I am totally blind and I am trying to teach my dog to place command and you were saying that it’s important to reward them even if just one of their paws is on the bed I was wondering as a blind person how would be my best way to go about that hope to hear from you and like I said I’m sorry I’m just getting this video
Love the video it’s an extended version of the old one which is great I would love a video on your old dog I think it was a corgi thanks again! Edit: I was wondering if you could make a video on how to get your dog to know that it’s training time cause my dog seems to have an issue with that
I have a 13 week labradoodle that was not socialized. We are working in human touch and company. I would like to start basic commands- she doesn’t know her name, or make eye contact- any advise? Anything will b helpful
Random question but how do you keep your doodles eyes so clean? I have a black shih poo and I’m wiping her eyes multiple times a day and sometimes that’s still not enough. She’s been to the vet recently so I know it’s not due to illness… her eyes just get so gross, help!
I did this training for my 12 week old Golden Retriever….and now all he does is go to his “place” and sit and look at me. If I don’t constantly give him a treat he starts barking at me. Have I created a monster? Please help.
Same, I have a 1 year old mixed puppy. She's a little too clever and every trick we have taught her she has started to d by herself and then bark to demand treats🙃
yup, ignore the dog if you've already shaped the behavior. he should be rewarded for those things when you ask em to. also may be time to start phasing out treats. extend duration between treats. or have em do 2 or 3 commands before rewarding
Also everyone consider your boy/girl may be telling you there ready for a new game. They've mastered this challenge & enjoyed the stimulation, now they want you to give them another. 🐈🦧🐕
This is a great example as to why diminishing the use of treats during training is best. Sure there are useful for puppies at first, but I find for older dogs or even after a few good sessions with a puppy, teaching them to associate their reward with our positive reinforcement like “good boy/girl” is better down the line. I LOVE this method of teaching the “place” command. Instead of luring the dog into the raised bed with a treat, standing by the bed and simply allowing the dog to make the decision to get on it and then rewarding with a “good boy/girl” seems to show the dog how pleased we are with them and completely eliminate the use of treats.
I have a 10 week puppy - shih tzu ....she is tiny...so I tried to use a blanket for the 'Place queue" and even though I am training her to potty on the pad, she peed on the blanket. Any suggestion as to how I can change this behaviour? It's happened 3 times already...: -(
I know every dog is different, but realistically how long would you say a dog could learn this command. I have a 5 month old doodle and we are teaching him “place”. He’s getting better, but definitely not picking it up as quickly as all of his other commands (stay, sit, paw, lay, etc).
How can i stop my dog from being afriad of going outside at night . We have a light outside but as soon as he hears ruffling from the wind or a neighbord dog he will stop peeing or loose focus
I started training my 9 week puppy and she seemed to catch on very quickly, but the issue I ran into is that what I was using as "place "was getting chewed up, so I would just rush to take it away from her, because I don't want her to continue practicing that behavior. It was hard to take it away because she was also staying successfully in place. Any recs?

Love your videos! Getting our puppy Saturday and have been watching ur videos for months in preparation
Thats what i am doing lol i am trying to learn as much as pos lol 😂
I’ve learned a lot about timing of rewarding from these videos. Like rewarding mid-stream, or not right after he got back on place. It makes so much sense, but I didn’t think of it before this.
I just want to point out how cute Wally’s bandana is, it looks perfect on him! This video is honestly super important for all dog owners out there too
I am using the lid to a large plastic tool / storage chest from Home Depot. It’s off the floor a couple of inches, a definite place, moveable too. What a good looking boy 😊

My Labrador gets up all the time too. She know to get on her mat, but then she often get up and goes to lay on the floor instead.
Yes please!! Same!! A video on how you teach them their release command would be greatly appreciate!!
Yes that would be great
Throw a treat and say it
@christinarangel6971 Yes exactly! That would be the preferred method just like when you're trying them to get on.
Ohh my goodness- I’ve loved your videos for years Rachel and have been following Wally’s journey since the day you and your mum bought him home- I haven’t watched a video for a while- can’t believe how BIG HE IS now 💜😱

Hey! I just wanted to say that you should really really make merch! I would totally buy it!
So much WALLACE!!!! Awwwwwww!
Wait!!! I love this! I work a lot with dogs choosing to do things on their own but I never thought to do it with place. Trying this.
This is great. How do u get them to stop barking while in place?
Rachel - thanks for the videos, found them a great help
It is actually most helpful when your dog makes a mistake. Otherwise we have no idea what to do when our dog does. Also could you show how you would do things like this with their raw food dinner.
I saw a few videos of a golden retriever breeder here in RUclips and she feeds the puppies a raw diet whilst training them. She hand feeds the puppies the raw meat. Hand feeding is actually a good method of teaching your puppy/dog how to NOT resource guard. But in the case of training the “place” command, you could wear gloves while you hand feed if you don’t want to touch the raw meat.
Your videos are super cute! I love your enthusiasm!
Where did you get place mat?❤
Hello from Texas 🤠
Thanks!
Loving your videos! Should place be somewhere different than the crate or can it be the crate?
Great idea!
Thank you for posting this but I don’t know if I missed it but how do you teach release or free
These videos are very helpful. My new puppy enjoys her training 🐶🐶🐶🐶🐶
Hi Rachel -- thanks for your videos; they're super helpful! I was just wondering when you would use "place" to get your dog on a dog bed vs when you would want them to go in their crate, and how does your dog know to distinguish between the two in different scenarios? Thank you!!
She uses the word ‘crate’ when she wants them to go in the crate and ‘place’ when she wants them on the bed
Lol
Your videos are awesome!
Hi Rachel! I was wondering what the folding pet cot is called that you have? It doesn't seem to be in your links? Thanks so much!
Yes same! I’d love the link to it
Possibly a Lifestyle Pet Cot Elevated Bed. Waiting for confirmation from OP.
Link to your foldable elevated bed please
Hi! Any tips of teaching free/release?
i love your videos they really help
where did you get that foldable place bed/cot i looking for a xxxl one. thanks
Do you have a separate “place” for each of your dogs? How do you handle that?
What is the brand of foldable elevated bed?
The raised dog bed on Amazon is no longer available … do you know the brand? Trying to find it online as I too like the fold design
Can crate be in place of place?
I absolutely love your videos. They've been so helpful training my pup. Quick question-I know you posted a video about the Whistle Go tracer a year or so ago, but was wondering if you would still recommend them? Thanks!

i have a kelpie x broder collie puppy that i got 2 days ago, she is 10 weeks old and she has come from a big farm. she loves eating all the plant in the backyard when she goes out for potty and playtime. How do i get her to stop biting plants??
Mine too. Izzy eats plants too. Also digs and eats dirt. Chews on sticks, leaves, whatever.
What is the brand of cot\ place bed you show in this video? Don’t see it lasted on your shop page
Oh I need this so bad, our 11 week pup constantly jump up on us or guests, so this yessss for me.
What brand is that elevated bed
Amazing video! Thank you! Could you tel me where you got that dog bed?! I love it. It would be perfect for my golden doodle as well.
You can get dog cots like that on Amazon.
Is that a Lifestyle Pet Cot Elevated Bed?
I looked for this Foldable bed and can't find it on your site.
She says the word ‘place’
Can you use a crate as a place?
I have found your channel to be the most helpful of any out there. Thank you!

Thank You so much for the tips and research you do for us pet parents i love your videos keep them coming you been so helpful.
Can you send me a reply were i can get this mat?
Is place similar to a crate? Im currently using a crate, when should you introduce place?
Hi there, new to your videos! Very helpful. My question is, how do you get them not to run off as soon as they get their treat? Do you just keep repeating the command?
Hello. How do I train my puppy if he is not food motivated or don’t like any treats?
Does the place command apply to the area, or the mat? If I move the mat to another part of the room, will my dog go to that new place? Or does it require retraining?
I'm pretty sure it's the mat he/she will follow. But to be sure try putting it on different places and placing the cue after the relocation. My dog got it after a few tries bit everydog is different.

You cant just wait for a dog to stop chewing. He wont grow out of it. He thinks its a toy.
If I tell my dog place i reward and tell him break to release him. If he goes on to place by his own choice does he then get off by his own choice. If that makes sense lol if I tell him place he must wait for my release. If he chooses place then no release needed?

Hi Rachel I am sorry that I am just getting around to listening to this particular video I am totally blind and I am trying to teach my dog to place command and you were saying that it’s important to reward them even if just one of their paws is on the bed I was wondering as a blind person how would be my best way to go about that hope to hear from you and like I said I’m sorry I’m just getting this video
How do you teach them the cues "place" and "free" ???
Also, candy corn gang 🤣
I love this!(Donna,a healthier dog
How do I know which places I can take my puppy in Austin? Like Home Depot, Lowe’s, etc?
Does the Place have to be different than the crate? Or can they be the same?
Love the video it’s an extended version of the old one which is great I would love a video on your old dog I think it was a corgi thanks again!
Edit: I was wondering if you could make a video on how to get your dog to know that it’s training time cause my dog seems to have an issue with that
How do u introduce a baby to your puppy
my puppy loves to go on the bed but start biting the bed once on. how should i handle this?
I have a 13 week labradoodle that was not socialized. We are working in human touch and company. I would like to start basic commands- she doesn’t know her name, or make eye contact- any advise? Anything will b helpful
I didn't get my puppy until she was a year old and now she's almost two. Is it too late to start using this with her?
My puppy almost 7 week can I do this
Random question but how do you keep your doodles eyes so clean? I have a black shih poo and I’m wiping her eyes multiple times a day and sometimes that’s still not enough. She’s been to the vet recently so I know it’s not due to illness… her eyes just get so gross, help!
How can you do this outside? I’d love to do this when he’s outside and behaving badly
Hahaha Place doesn't stop any of the things the title suggests!
Where are “the link below?”?
I did this training for my 12 week old Golden Retriever….and now all he does is go to his “place” and sit and look at me. If I don’t constantly give him a treat he starts barking at me. Have I created a monster? Please help.
Same, I have a 1 year old mixed puppy. She's a little too clever and every trick we have taught her she has started to d by herself and then bark to demand treats🙃
ignore it 100%. keep doing things around the house, pretend like u don't see her barking.
yup, ignore the dog if you've already shaped the behavior. he should be rewarded for those things when you ask em to. also may be time to start phasing out treats. extend duration between treats. or have em do 2 or 3 commands before rewarding
Also everyone consider your boy/girl may be telling you there ready for a new game. They've mastered this challenge & enjoyed the stimulation, now they want you to give them another.

Any recs?
