- Can the BMW 1 Series compete against other luxury hatchbacks like the Audi A3, Mercedes A Class, and Volvo V40? It already sets itself apart from the crowd by featuring rear-wheel-drive. However, is this worth the extra cost that comes with the coveted BMW badge, or are cheaper rivals such as the Ford Focus better value? It is however, the cheapest BMW you can buy, so what does Mat Watson think? Have BMW compromised or maintained their high standards? Mat lets you know what he thinks in our 4k review!

Matts you could have taken a real 2017 bmw for a review of a « 2018 « 1 Serie... the one with the new dashboard and large touch screen shame...!
When you're not even buying a car but enjoy watcing Matt's reviews soooo much
I'm the same. I'm not in the market for a new car, I just like watching the reveiws haha
work harder then
+John Kyon I actually own the new S8, wasn't the point of the comment
yea work harder because my 400e sallary will go up...NOT. Even in richer countries if u have low payed job u cant even think about this car myb with a credit from bank. Cash no way.
John Kyon Wasn't the point of my comment. I already just bought a new car. I enjoy watching the reviews. if I'm buying or not
I have this in a 118i 1.5 and its brilliant ! Who cares about other peoples comfort its my car haha
Will Monnoyer 3 cylinder sound okay? Im not sure if 109 hp 116i is good enough :/
Charlie May no, the f20 LCI (Facelift) has 109. The 118i is now 136 hp. But both are 3 cylinders. There was a short time ( June/July 2015) where bmw built the facelift 118i with 4 cylinders.
Charlie May if you drove the one with short back lights thats the pre facelift (116i) 136 hp and 4 cylinders.
Charlie May yeah gonna test drive...after looking every compact car, bmw 1 series is definetly the best looking, comfy sporty car
Charlie May but thats not the facelift., thats the f20 (2012 - 2015)
huge shame that they are going FWD. It's biggest selling point for me was that it was still RWD, 50/50 weight distribution, and hence justified its rather more expensive price. If it's FWD, well I might as well just buy a golf.
Honfy Lam not confirmed fwd, may still be rwd
Andy Wu It is confirmed!
It’s still a BMW. A Golf is just a Golf.
@@raftonpounder6696 bmw is bmw because of rwd.
@@raftonpounder6696 not really is it a Mini underneath.
The next Gen 1 series which will be a FWD car will be a glorified Mini with a BMW badge. The main selling point of this car is its RWD and sporty driving. Other than that, nothing separates it from the competition
Thank you Mat/Carwow! Great review of the 1-series. I got a 1-series F20 myself (110 000 km), the only thing that isn't true is the "diesel engine vibrations in the steering wheel" point, i've never heard of it. I don't know about the UK but here in Sweden the 1-series comes with run flat tires and that's actually the worst thing about this car. I'm sure that's the vibrations in the stearing wheel point you're talking about. I've switched the run flat tires to "normal" ones, that's the way to go imo =)
On the postive side, I love this car, it's the way i want it. Something that you didn't mention, the car is really low! It's a workout to get out of the car =) Other then that, the car is so much fun and reliable on the road, the M-sport chassi in a 120d is actually made for the M135i engine, how awesome is that?! To bad what BMW does to the next generation of the 1-series with the FWD, i won't buy the next generation of it. (Sorry for bad english)
in singapore bmw 116d cost SGD$130,000++ I have been driving toyota corolla 1.6 for almost 20years.
The last great BMW 1 series
I Own the 1 serie 118d it a fun car to drive
Here since
+SneakySandhu thanks. How are you finding the new channel?

Practicality is suffering more because of design choices rather than the RWD... I'm 100% sure BMW could make this an attractive practical car for small families if they'd just redesign certain things like the rear doors and widen the body a little. Doing that, they could've kept it RWD, but this is all about cost savings.
Look at the Mercedes A class, it's not practical at all and still is FWD. I wish that BMW would work their magic on their exceptional, practical little sports car rather than taking away the one thing that makes it stand out...
does this car fit 2 bags 29 inch and one baby trolly?
I want to rent one in the airport but I am afraid that car can't fit my luggages
You can't get an Xdrive 1 series in the UK.
Yeah you can now
i love that mic voice :D
I dont get why they facelifted this car, the rear was so classy
Yeah, I'd like to have the facelifted front end with the pre-facelifted rear end.
Yeah I have got the pre facelifted model and Id rather keep the rear and have that new front too
michalis georg me 2
Probably to return to the traditional 'L' shaped taillights as found on the E39 estate, E46, E70, F30, F87 etc.
The new front is much better though
The new Carwow voiceover mic seems to be a can with a string in the end.
got to keep costs down
its raping my ears
haha
Yeah, it sounds like c3po
Sounds a bit like Iron Man xP
you don't buy bmw for 2 inches of extra space on the back seat, mark my words
+mcbalzer I'm on the ground, laughing when I see the BMW badge on these mini van 2 series AT/GT. It's everything a BMW is not - transversal engine, fwd, small hood... wtf BMW?
well said mate
exactly the only people like Matt in this review are boring audi drivers. I have this car 120i and it is fantastic and actually more practical than other rivals in many ways,.

Love this car. 1 series really looks good now. Goes exceptionally well also.
I was told by a BMW rep that BMW have one of the biggest fan clubs in the car industry. The RWD system works so well on the 1 series plus other models which is a big buying point for a certain person, but BMW want more than just fans of the badge buying their cars. As most cars are FWD OR 4WD, BMW want to get on a similar market with company's like Audi and VW. I've also heard that Audi may be looking into the RWD system as well, not sure how true that is!!. I drive a 2014 120d M sport. I've drove a lot of different cars but no car drives like a BMW, that's why I own one now. Hopefully not all 1 series will be FWD in the future.
Why the heck are they switching to FWD? What the fuck are they thinking? The only reason you'd ever buy a 1 series is because it's the cheapest RWD car on the EU market that's actually properly engineered and great out of the factory.
Ikr!! that sucks, i bet it will have some components of a mini cooper to make it fun? idk but if i was to get a one series i would get the rwe generations...
+derbigpr500 here in UK people just go for the badge and image with the series one, so it will still tick the box's. I would not no be seen dead in one especially if it is going front wheel drive, only a three series real wheel drive if any for me and i would not look way too much like a pretentious pratt like series one owners.
they are turning to the practicality and comfort... deal with it
I do wish they keep it RWD. People who really want practicality get SUVs. This is probably the only hatchback that is RWD. AND HAS A MANUAL OPTION!!! This is excellent!
Most owners of the 1 series couldn't give a shit that it's RWD, I believe there was a survey done that showed 80% of 1 series owners didn't even know their car was RWD.
All that matters is that it's the cheapest way of getting a BMW on their driveway.
Also, BMWs are not properly engineered, look up N47 engine problems if you don't believe me.
NOOOOOOOOOOOOO KEEP IT RWD
Ikr.!! It's the one thing that makes it stand out, and the reason I'd buy one over the A3 :(
Looking forward to the inevitable 716d with front wheel drive. Fucking hate what BMW are doing to their brand these days.
moron
I will never ever buy a BMW with FWD.
WarthDader74 k
I don't think people buy BMW for practical reasons, its the only RWD hatchback left. Sets it apart from the rivals. It will be dumb to change that.
Yes I agree.
But also the quality could be better.
There are more refinded cars in the class.
@@markusortmaier7174 I disagree. I used to own a 2015 118d and I think the interior and exterior quality was brilliant. I’ve driven an Audi S3 and been in a Mercedes A class and fully believe that the BMW is equal, if not better than the 2 of them quality wise.
The RWD system is the coolest thing
About this car without it
It is just an Audi
I agree, but they probably want higher sales numbers, beacuse people in this range want front drive.
@@stevem2323 not really. they want nice-looking, economical city cars and couldn't care less whether it's got fwd or rwd.
@@J0J0McM0M0 Yes they do, small cars with rwd have no room at the back, and women drives don't like it.
Theyd have been better getting rid of the middle seat and making a comfortable 4 seater.
@@J0J0McM0M0 Dude you are dead wrong, women buyers and considerable portion of men buyers don't like rwd.
being owner of this car, I would never care about those in the back. If you do like being lifted in this kind of space, get your own car. Or f****k off.
Vytautas Gečas but I need a ride to football and need a free lift from you and your car has no room 😢
I’ll never understand why reviewers keep banging on about full sized adults in the back of small hatches. I mean, who gives a shit??
Truuuue.. If you prefer a comfy back over driving pleasure (in a hatchback!!), then you should get an Audi or a VW
What the actual **** happened to the voiceover?
this video is gonna be deleted soon and re-uploaded with proper audio
+Dmitry L i'm sure it won't mat loves adding these funny, silly lame stuff lol...
But rear wheel drive is in its DNA! So disappointing regardless of extra space etc...
They already do front wheel drive models.
I know. That 2 Series Active Tourer is a monstrosity...
Wouldn't mind if it came with XDrive. FWD biased Audi Haldex systems are pretty good. Modern differentials ftw.
the rwd is one of the only reason i would consider a bmw 1er....now that its going towards fwd....urgh
if 1 series will be front wheel drive, it will be ww3, homosexuals and lesbians will be everywhere, and clinton will follow trump
The feeeling you get to be pushed and not pulled is what makes BMW experience. Looks like i will need to keep my 120i for a long time.
If you are willing to keep a BMW for more than a decade, be prepared to do your own maintenance, visit bimmerforums for discussion about your car, and keep some money aside for unexpected repairs.
Makes little to no difference other than on a track, day to day, you wouldn't be able to tell if you didn't know.
@@ricksays7133 depends, 2005 - 2010 bmw’s are the least reliable, they are more reliable from 2015 now
@@spanishbballathlete3862 mhm we drove an 116d from 2009 for 350k km / 10 years. Only 2 major issues, and they came after 200k. (DPF had to be changed at 290 - can’t really prevent that tbh, and a problem with the battery and LM at 220ish...)

if they did that, they'll only make electric mode FWD just like the i8
Suberakan Xavier lol no baby, the m5 is a awd/rwd V8 monster!
pretty much lol
What about this one: audi s6 with Diesel engines
In that case I'm gonna buy a dacia. If I have to drive a peace of shit, it's gonna be the cheapest one.
Anyone notice he said 225i not 125i?
Yes! I assume he meant 125i which is what I have and love it, goes like shit off a stick
Josh Street because he likes the 225i
Notice how he said the 125i gives 'good economy'? I have one and getting 25mpg.
I don't care about those disadvantages, I like it with rear wheel drive.
Love the 1 Series. It's one of those cars that doesn't really add up on paper - you really have to drive one to "get" it. In my opinion it's the best car to drive in this class, and although I accept the looks aren't to everyone's taste, I personally think it looks great. Practical enough but with great handling. Shame that the next one is going to be FWD... I hope they at least keep the sporty design and don't make it look like every other hatchback.
I got the xDrive variant of the F20 120d and i gotta say it makes a HUGE difference to drive AWD, its so much fun and you can play more with curves!
A man who knows what hes talking abt, the series 1 is one of, if not the coolest looking IMO, amongst the BMWs out there, more than (mind that Im not particularly good at car models and the cars in depth as well, I'm just here for cool designs xD) the longer versions or the bigger, newer versions. Its as u say, practical and small to have a little fun on the road without using all the space.
Unfortunately they did.
New bmw will only begin to look worse, not even worth buying em
Own an Audi A3 ,
Test drove this today, and was blown away with how fun it was! Driving wise blows away the A3 2019 and the a class 2019
But I still will miss the BMW 1 Series of this generation
You have seen the light.
Obviously. It’s a BMW. Nothing drives like a RWD BMW.
I thought the easter-egg was C3PO doing the voiceover
I've always had a great admiration for this car and anyone who drives it... Hoping to own one and just....
Who’s here to mourn after witnessing the monstrosity that is the new 1 series ...?
I knew the next was going to be FWD, so the F20 M140i would be the car I'd buy. I'd be hoping for it to depreciate a bit with the new model coming out, but seeing that rebadged Ford Focus, I think the F20's are going up in value, lmao
You said base models have all the equipment you need aside from rear parking sensors. But then you said it doesn't have cruise control. That is a fucking ripoff. Cruise control is standard on cars that cost less than half this much. So... Yeah.
I've got this car since 2016 and its such a joy to ride! Bit cramped at the back but who cares!
4:58 - The engine you would go for is the 225i? So a 2 Series then? Silly Matt.
That's what I was thinking 'what's he on about?' lol. Also I don't even think they do a 225i in the 2 series.
The stupid bean counters at BMW have now created the 2019/2020 1 series with Front Wheel Drive. That means these old RWD examples are serious classics already!
How did you manage to review the 2018 car in 2016? Can’t just rename the video
Yay... FWD BMW... it will be cheaper. In production. But not for us. BMW with FWD and 4-cylinder diesel is just wrong... Proper BMW has 6-cylinder in-line petrol engine. Like e46 330i, or e39 530i. Less cylinders = less BMW.
335d ever driven one?
Picked my 116d m sport auto on Monday, not fast by any means but fuel economy is great, feels smooth and handles corners like a dream
I own a bmw 1 series, now lemme tell ya
FAST AS FUK BOIIII
what's the deal with no one being able to park cars with a small back window? what about vans with no view? never had trouble myself.
I never use the back window, don't know what it's for (other than some moron eyeballing you in the mirror, which is why I point that at the floor too!). Everything from a van upwards gets on quite well with just wing mirrors.
is it just me or does he seems biased with his "knee room" measurement? i'm pretty sure i've seen him say there's plenty of knee room on cars where it looked like it's bad, and what's with the changing measurment? it goes between air slapping the gap to the pinch and now fisting it?
This rear wheel setup is a blast to drive. Corner after corner is lovely.
Who's here after seen the new 1 series
Just had one of these for a few days as a courtesy car from BMW dealer while mine was in for a service. It is an awesome car, super responsive and fun to drive, was so surprised by how much I loved it, mine is a 430d, wouldn't trade it for that, but I would certainly recommend this to anyone thinking of buying. I loved it for the few days I had it.
I own a 2016 120i M Sport, and I won’t be selling it as it is the last of it’s breed
Better than the new one ...
You don’t buy a 1 series for interior room. You buy a 3 series estate for that.
FWD is dull as shit to drive 🤦🏼♂️
FWD loool i have RWD 118i m performence and would never switch it to fwd. Not even m145i fwd
The people in the back may give a thumbs down>>> But they always have the option of walking!
Exactly!
If my focus is transporting 4 people with my car I don’t buy a Fun rwd hatchback ffs. I don’t get how this is a point tbh. You buy this car because it‘s fun to drive not because it‘s so practical. Get a Diesel Golf variant or smth if you want to drive your kids to school 😂
The 225i? I think you meant the 125i right?...
+Rob Enne yeah... Silly me. All excited and forgot which BMW I was in... Looks the same from the driver's seat ;)
+carwow haha all good. So what would you choose? 125/225?
BMW 1-series and A3 are the class leaders
I recently had an A-class (a well specced AMG Line A180) and it was truly crap. Cheap plastics all around in the interior, harsh ride, not much space, not much tech, noisy diesel engine etc etc. Honestly, the new Astra or a Golf feel more refined and upmarket than the A-class. And of course the 1-series and A3 are miles ahead
The A3 is a beautifully made car.
cockshield Yes. Tasteful design, big choice of trim levels and engines, technology, safety, comfort and all you need.
Dmitry L I totally agree the a class is not nice at all. The only reason people like it is for the badge
The rs3 in my opinion is the best in its class
That's because underneath, it is a Renault. Also, it is the most expensive of the bunch for whatever reason.
Let's have a moment's silence for this brilliant little Bimmer now that the ugly, slow, fail wheel drive new one has released
Felice Graziano haha u r so right
Is C3-PO helping you with narration?
have 2014 120D in manual, best choice made, happy to drive every day especially in sport mode
I wish we have the BMW 1 series back in the United States plus that hatchback it looks very cool
what do you have instead of 1 series
+John Kyon there's no replacement we have 2 series
We only get the 2 series coupe, not the 2 series minivan monstruosity.
+julienjjj same here the 2 series coupe and I heard about the BMW 2 series crossover I never but that even if they pay me BMW should always be RWD even the crossover
One reason is probably because 1 series is hatchback only, USA markets favour sedan for some dumb reason, i don't get it, sedan cars are longer but don't have more trunk space,
Can’t believe a BMW of this age doesn’t have cruise control as standard
Me neither. Even the m sport one doesn’t. I’m looking to get one and it’s not the cheapest to retrofit either but worth it
I have owned a 2019 120i for two years now. After about 6 months I'd had enough of the runt flats and ordered a new set of summer tyres. The change of tyres transformed the car. The tyre roar is almost gone. The engine is very quiet as well. No vibrations can be felt through the steering wheel. For a car of its size it is actually quite comfortable. And, it is so much fun to drive!
Which is better for the 1 series petrol or diesel?
Ok got it what brand and size ?
I've been meaning to do this, but since I have the 18" wheels, the tyres (even non runflat ones) are quite expensive :D
Have you had any trouble with the car buddy?
@@harrycharles2676 No problems at all. FYI, I only put 10000-15000 km/year on it. I was worried how it would handle the winters here in Sweden being RWD and all. But, I've never had any difficulties. Great fun little car. 😊

The last of the respectable and relatively affordable BMW which represents BMW's heritage and purpose. Now it's utterly lost. Pity.
I have a 118i, F20 generation. Really good. Brilliant drivability.

no need to make it fwd. you get this car because its rwd. otherwise you go for the better alrounder, the a3.
Why did the audio make Matt sound like C-3PO😭
1 series, 2 series active, X1 and X2 are all going to be FWD. This is tragic. I wonder how long until the 3 series comes as FWD standard...
people buy bmws for the driver experience, every review site/publication moaning about rear leg room have finally got their wish. BMW had an excuse to change to FWD which is absolutely scandalous to be honest. This car has lost it's USP for the sake of a bit of legroom. If you need rear legroom, you buy a bigger car! All these reviewers moaning about leg room will now moan about how sedate the car is to drive, despite what BS BMW say about how it's like driving a RWD car it just isn't. Even without talking about handling, in a straight line, the difference between being pushed forward from behind feels so much more exhilarating than being pulled forward from the front wheels. I know this as a fact when comparing the 2014 118d and a jaguar x-type 2.2d 2009
Who is going to have this as a family car though? You’d get an X5 or something else if you need a big car .
I'll keep my F20 for the next 30.years and then sell it as a clasic and only RWD hatchback. Shame on you BMW for switching 1 series to FWD. And if You are affraid in getting stuck in the snow just by Spike and Spider snow chains. Have them and I tryed them and was able to go uphill on snowy roads where many 4x4 SUV couldn't
Dr. Nedim it is not confirmed that the next gen will be fwd
Good luck keeping a money pit unreliable german car for 30 years.
Buying a 2L diesel, 2019 plate. Anyone know what they’re like? Own one? Awaiting test drive, so not driven it yet.
I have one! 118d and i love it 😊 mine is 2017 edition though. I’m not a huge fan of the new shape.
AdoreASMR thanks for that! Same here, mine is the older shape but newer plate. I didn’t like the new shape, grills a bit odd looking
So bmw is going to scrap all the fun by making the 1 series front wheel drive. It will be no better than a vw. What a shit decision
Why did they put those ugly rear lamps on? They shouldn't have stuck with the squarer lights from the pre-facelift!

Much better than a british none of the above premium cars.
My seat Ibiza is front wheel drive and it still get that stupid middle transmission area in the back even more than that BMW
First time I saw this car was when I was still unemployed and was at the time when Merc and Audi were releasing their hatchback competitors. Instantly feel in love with this one simply because of the FR layout. True definition of a hot hatch. Gonna buy this someday for sure.

Why are you driving a 2016 edition but claiming it to be a 2018 on the title?
Slightly biased because I have a 1 series and used to work at bmw, but I am at a different car dealership now driving all sorts of cars each day. 1 series is the best hatchback on the road no doubt, arguably the best looking but 100% FACT smoothest engine and gearbox on the road
RWD is mint, iDrive is stupidly efficient, who gives a f is the passengers are cramped they can drive their own car! BMW in general better than Mercedes n Audi. Fuck the rest, get a beemer
2019 and it’s finally died 😭
Why have you started labelling reviews as 2018 when it’s a 2016? This car has been through a facelift since 2016.
I like the level of detail you went into with this car along with having extra videos for very specific things (like the infotainment system, for example). Only thing I wish was that you went into talking about the driving and handling just a bit more. Otherwise, review was top notch. Cheers!
Without the m sport shadow edition alloys, it looks shit
How is this a 2018 model yet this video was made in 2016? Time travel?🤣
I’m considering buying this or a mk7.5 golf gtd can someone help me?
I have driven both. The 7.5 GTI is more upright, bit more comfortable, nicer interior IMO. They both drive great. I think the GTI had more of a sporting character, it felt more fun, more connected. Bmw is great, bit noisy tire noise. Back seat the 7.5 is more spacious. I think the 7.5 would be more reliable.
With BMW’s economy you really have to push to get the max.
I have the F10 520d, I get a motorway average of 65mpg (had up to 69mpg). I get this by using eco pro mode, cruise control set to 70mph, plan ahead and most importantly switch your tyres from runflats to a decent pair of reinforced tyres.
I have the 125i msport Shadow Edition Absolutely Great to Drive being rear wheel and excellent features 👍
