      I’m confused by the statements, they sound sympathetic but….
      You all are making it sound like all of these folks struggling with the events of Ian are here by choice. Not everyone lives on Sanibel. For every one of these folks there are thousands who are North Port residents, Cape Coral residents, Venice residents. You think they all have resort homes? Many of these human beings have inherited their homes, their one and only possession. You think they can just pick up and leave on a whim? The folks on Sanibel and Captiva have the same story in many cases. Pray that events like this never occur to you. Not everyone has a choice in where they live, and if they indeed choose to live here, then more power to them. It’s no different then living on a fault line in Cali, setting up a mobile home in tornado alley, living up and down the eastern seaboard…living in major crime areas. Pick one that places you at risk.
      I wish you all the best.

Other than the Risk of Structure, For Insurance Companies, Policy Holders, Home Owners, etc... you are talking about $100s of Millions or Billions in Losses...Building Materials are not cheap currently and will increase due to demand in Florida... That is a great place to Invest, for sure...... Though 'real Life', is not always about 'Making Money', even though Markets do not care about Loss.... Besides you are overlooking the obvious, there are thousands, not hundreds, of Deaths.... They are not reporting it, but there were more Deaths in one Neighborhood, than they are Reporting...Those flooded Trailerparks, for example.. There were 100's of Thousands of Homes...... Destroyed, down to the Foundation.... It is far worse than anyone can imagine, unless they see it for themselves..

    2nd Deadliest not because of the storm. But because people didn't heed the warning, and the population density in that area. If people heeded the warnings, those who could get out of the way, and if people took living near a coast serious, this would have resulted in less death. Also the cost to the environment, that is what I am curious about, as that is a lasting consequence. Those mangroves won't full recover, many will die. This will lead to more coastal erosion. I saw it with Irma, some mangroves are ok, but many are dead from Irma.

      To be fair the NWS was forecasting the storm to hit much further North (near Tampa) and make landfall as a Category 1. True the hurricane hit within the massive 500 mile wide "cone of uncertainty" but it was a STRONG Cat 4 hurricane within 5 mph of being of Cat 5 when it was forecasted for DAYS to weaken into a Cat 1. The difference in destruction between the forecasted hurricane strength and what actually hit is exponentially higher. The forecasts were FAR off and when they "adjusted" the forecasted path 12 hours before landfall it was literally too late for millions lest they be trapped on the roads and highways and drown in their cars.

    • @intheknow7659
      @intheknow7659 Год назад

      @@williammathis6044 Actually 36 hours out some of the spaghetti models had the storm tracking over Sanibel. Roughly 48 hours out it had shifted the storm south of Tampa, but north of Venice. At that point anyone from north Naples up to Tampa should have been taking the storm serious.
      There are great sources online for models, the NWS is terrible with forecasts. Several models had taken the storm 36 hours out (not the spaghetti models, but a model called the NAM) over north ft myers.
      What made this storm track further south was the front in north Florida. Originally the models showed a high pressure nosing down from the north, this is why it was looking to make landfall up near Tampa. However that started to trend south over 48 hours out. Actually the original track was over ft myers, then it trended west then back east. That track was when the storm was south of Jamaica.
      People had time, but they listened to the local news. The forecasts by the NHC only show a tiny window into what may happen. While those spaghetti models showed a real threat to all of the west coast of Florida (excluding west of Panama City).
      As far as intensity. Yes Cat 1 was forecast when it was up near Tampa. However as time went on a Cat 3 was looking more likely at landfall, then 24 hours out, some models indicated a weak Cat 4. However with many past storms, they can strengthen suddenly when not forecast. Ive seen this with storms offshore, and seen the opposite where a storm never strengthened to what was forecast. People were complacent with this, because "no not me". But everyone on those exposed islands should have been either in or near east Naples or on a highway to Miami. Winds east of Naples were 25-35mph..

      @intheknow7659 Год назад

      @@Hayyyward I agree. There has been a lot of habitat ruined by development. The lawns are not good for the water ways, and all that debris that did get swept out was not good. The implications of that alone in the long term could be worse.
      Up in that area of Pine Island, they had some nasty red tide blooms. Red tide is natural, starts offshore. However it is enhanced by the nutrient rich waters flowing out from the outlet of Lake Okeechobee. All the pesticides, herbicides, fertilizers used on grass not native to Florida doesn't help.
      Im not a greenie, but working with what is around you, makes it profitable for all.

    Decimated mobile homes make a great backdrop for a hurricane disaster story. It would be interesting to see how modern homes that were built in the last 20+ years. survived Ian. (Florida created the new Florida Building Code after Hurricane Andrew in 1992, and required homes to be built high above the ground to withstand coastal storm surge.) Mobile homes, RVs and boats in a hurricane. Not good. Sadly for those who have lived in mobiles for decades (before modern building requirements), won't be building anything like that again. They will have to meet the very stringent new code requirements. Every hurricane that hits Florida, eliminates many of these weak structures from the State. Living anywhere near the 1360 miles of the Coastline in Florida has risks. And Florida is flat and only about 100 miles wide. I know. I live on the coast and have been a resident for 50 years. It is not a matter of if, but when will a hurricane hit your town. You need a strong house high in the air to survive at major hurricane. Wishing a speedy recovery for my fellow Floridians. They have a very long road to travel.

You live on a barrier island, evacuate if a hurricane is heading to the coast of your state, anywhere along the coast because Hurricanes can quickly change course and this one was 500 miles across. Never should a mobile home or RV be allowed residency on a barrier reef. If they allow rebuilding the structures need to be raised and concrete block construction.

    house upon a rock:
    25 And the rain descended, and the floods came, and the winds
    blew, and beat upon that house; and it fell not: for it was founded
    upon a rock.
    26 And every one that heareth these sayings of mine, and doeth
    them not, shall be likened unto a foolish man, which built his
    house upon the sand: EVERYTHING written in the Bible is written
    for the benefit of mankind, not against man. It is about time
    that all mankind heeds the warnings of GOD.

      John 10:10, " The thief comes not but for to steal, kill and destroy. I (Jesus), am come that you might have life, and that you might have it more abundantly."
      Do not credit acts of the Destroyer to God. Only in final acts of wrath does God destroy evil (Sodom & Gomorrah, the Great Flood) His people, those who obey His laws and worship Him and His Son, Jesus, are not appointed to wrath. 1 Thessalonians 5:9
      Revelation 20:8-10, Gog and Magog, are destroyed. Satan, the beast and the false prophet are cast into the Lake of Fire forever.

      Absolutely God is and was in the storm or else more lives would have been lost. The Bible says not to build your house upon the sand but to build it on the rock! Some people don't know the Lord and don't pray or acknowledge Him but are expecting to be safe during disasters. Psalm 91 says he who abides in the secret place of the Most High shall rest in the shadow of the Almighty. God was waiting for some of these people to call on him but I'm sure they didn't because it's not their habit to do so. Don't blame God just praise him in the storm 🙏. God is our refuge and strength, a ever present help in times of need... for them that worship and acknowledge Him.

      My brother drowned two years ago. God could have chose to bring him out of a coma but the microarray of all miracles is he’s in heaven with Jesus with our mom who passed ten months later. God is merciful and compassionate in our suffering. He can sympathize with the feeling of our infirmities because Jesus died for every one of us, Gods only son and rose from the dead. I couldn’t imagine going through life’s hardships without him.
