When Manatees Attack!!!

- After watching another sucessful SpaceX mission, my daughter and I were leaving the Merritt Island National Wildlife Refuge and stumbled upon a rare site for sure. Alongside Mosquito Lagoon we were fortunate enough to view a small estuary where atleast 80 or more manatees had gathered. There appeared to be alot of commotion that seemed not normal for the usually docile animals. We suspected some manatee "hanky panky" was the only explanation. Turns out we were right.
Summertime is mating season for manatees so it's a great time to find large mating herds which can often be some the most spectacular viewings all year. When manatees are mating they are often in shallow water and can be seen up close.
As far as the manatee / alligator behavior we witnessed, pretty strange. Not only did the manatee continue to mess with the alligator repeatedly for atleast 20 minutes, but the alligator barely seemed to care. Awesome to watch!

Manatees are so friendly , they even like the crocs and gators lol I loved it in Florida in the 80’s. Merritt Island and Port Canaveral had more woods and the manatees loved to be petted by people but I didn’t know how many were injured because of coming to boats and they had to make it illegal to touch them . They sure loved getting lettuce at the Port and loved being petted like a dog , would even nudge you like a dog does when you stopped petting them lol. My dog got lifted up out of the water by a manatee in the Banana River lol good memories
It's against the law to feed or touch manatees.
isreallytoastyhere3711It would be extremely rare for a gator or croc to attack a manatee. Their only real threat is humans.

Hope the gator manages to dislodge that cord wrapped around his snout. kinda looks like he raided somebody's trot line.

Not at all. Gators and manatees coexist. Manatees are probably the only animal that a gator won't attack.
