Rove McManus interviews Kevin Clash, original performer of Elmo from 1985-2012.
Due to the high number of comments about Kevin making a joke about Rove's wife, it should be known that Belinda Emmett was alive at the time.

I absolutely love the detail of Elmo nodding along and looking around. Keeps things feeling so real and genuine.
There's a video of Jim Henson on Arsenio and it really tripped me out when Kermit would do something similar. They really seem to focus on keeping them alive.

Hes totally right about the importance of performance. I dont see a puppet, I see a sentient, cute red creature. The illusion isnt destroyed even with his puppeteer right in the open. really amazing.
I remember they did a study, and they found out that in the case is sesame street characters, children will still acknowledge the the character as a separate being, even if the puppeteer is right in front of their face. And it seems to be only relegated to sesame street characters.

IMO, it's the childlike attitude. Because Elmo is sweeter. Whereas Kermit and Piggy, for example, I've always seen as a strained relationship.

No matter how many times I watch this, it still amazes me that the voice actor for Elmo is some big black guy who's in his 50's.

I just watched a documentary on Netflix about Kevin and Elmo and it was fascinating. It’s a really skill to do puppetry and to see puppets brought to life on tv or film or stage is magical.

I feel the same way...about ALL of them, actually. Elmo and Big Bird and Kermit and Ms. Piggy and the Fraggles and ALL of them. What makes these characters so special and unique is that Jim Henson INFUSED them with life....with emotion and love and friendship and humor. You FEEL that love and that heart that each of these characters has....and when they are feeling emotion, they made you feel it too. I am 37 and I recently lost my Mom. To be honest, the thing that comforted me most WAS Sesame Street and how those characters dealt with the pain of losing someone they love. Its beautiful.

It's amazing what he does. When he does Elmo I completely forget about a guy controlling him and I see Elmo as just being Elmo as with all the muppets. You can never be too old to enjoy them. I'm 20 and Sesame street has been around way before I was even thought of and I will always enjoy the muppets.

I love how people are automatically saying Kevin's guilty, despite the fact that there's no solid evidence. He spent nearly 30 years dedicating himself to entertaining people, and keeping the art of puppetry alive. Anyone who met or knew Kevin will tell you he was a kind, harmless gentleman. Kevin's accusations are a personal matter, and I really don't think he needs immature people bothering him. Whatever the case, it really looks like his accusers are just after his money.
