As an adult with a family, a full-time job, and just enrolled in college again full-time. I enjoy videos like this that let me know which MMOs are coming down the pipe. It lets me factor them into my future PTO and puts me at ease that I have a decent amount of time to prep my family for a moment in the future where I will definitely be taking some much-needed me time. By the time the Riot MMO releases I'll be finished with my degree and hopefully settling into my new remote role. Great vid my dude, many thanks.
Despite the title (I get it clickbait make algorithm go brrrr) I thought this video was very level-headed, and based on reasonable expectations. Well done.
The main issue I have had and still do is the crazy speed of content that is released. I started playing the new wow expansion but had to go abroad for a few weeks and it felt like I was so far behind with the amount of stuff released. It seems like games in general have become a speedrun for a certain type of play and the game publishers are only catering to these type of players. Can’t we enjoy the content a little long between each update?
Great video. I really do miss Rift, I loved raiding with my guild in there. Tera was dead due to lack of endgame. The only game on the list I haven't heard of/tried was wizard 101 lol. 🙈
Isn't Arena Net the developers of Guild Wars 2? There was a leak from a shareholders meeting that Guild Wars 3 was in the making. Maybe those jobs posts are not for Horizon Online.
I don't believe an MMO can or WILL overtake WoW unless it manages to do what WoW does, but better in every conceivable way. It would have to have better combat, better, more robust, and varied build creation, more immersive world design and rewarding exploration, better progression content for both normal players AND min/max players including exceptional raiding and dungeon encounters that push the boundaries of technology and game design. I don't see that happening until we have a massive leap forward with commercial PC/console technology, on top of ALL the money in the world, plus an ambitious and HIGHLY skilled team of passionate veteran designers and developers. All of this would have to be created under a gamer-focused publisher that doesn't have marketing departments and profit-driven people whispering in their ears constantly.
There are multiple mmos that outpace WoW in some of those categories, just not all of them at once within a single game. WoW at its core is an outdated game that renders its own game world irrelevant outside of what is endgame. Nostalgia is what primarily drives people back, it was a formative experience, our brains like what is familiar, simple enough. What they excel at is taking ideas from other mmos and repurposing them for their game, only to then cast it aside per each expansion.
ArcheAge is my favourite MMO I've ever played, the trade runs and naval stuff was so fun and no MMO has anything like it. I hope ArcheAge 2 is a success
Was truly in a league of it's own until just couple of people decided to become millionaires by going full P2W. Sadly from AA2 being delayed 2 years (2 delays) and moving away from what made it good for more of a on rails single player style, I have lost hope in it...
New World is one of my favorite games. I have spent thousands of hours playing, including during BETA, and I am sad to say I do not play it for these reasons: The developers catered to PVE players when the entire community was largely PVP. The game was full of overpowered bugs, and the developers allowed exploits that led to widespread cheating with no repercussions. The developers did not create enough end-game content and refused to make changes to the large PVP Wars and Company Territory Ownership system, which was the main reason why PVP players played the game. The developers allowed multiple alt characters on the same servers which led to a monopoly of players owning all the territories ( I know because I was part of these companies). Simple quality-of-life changes were ignored; the game is what it is now because of the New World devs. I do not have much hope for LOTR because the same team that killed New World is about to undertake another game. I hope that we are all pleasantly surprised and I can admit that I am wrong.
I feel like "story" is a strong word when referring to Throne and Liberty. Also, while the overall model didn't change, they did actually significantly change aspects of the monetization for Western players.
Hey @lucky ghost I bought a package for Ashes back in 2020. What class do you plan on playing? I love you Elder Scrolls Vids and play it. Care to group for Ashes?
honestly I could only see a mmo with a brand like Warhammer doing really well. There is so little individuality in MMOs, even if there are multiple classes, it does not FEEL like choosing a different class really sets you on a different path. I wish there was a game that really allowed the players to make their character what they wanted. This might be a stupid idea, but letting the community aid in designing clothing or character features like in the game Roblox would be cool, giving the players incentives to make money ingame while essentially allowing more interesting customization. I wish devs instead focused on diversifying classes, making interesting skill trees, and trying to genuinely lean into adding complexity in the different ways to play the game, rather than buffing enemy hp, or introducing rng grinds, or making another boring msq with no real impact. ffxiv has a decent msq, but besides being practically a visual novel with a character creator, it has nothing of substance and it bothers me.
I believe the window for expecting games is going to be lower…but not due to technology advances. Everything will be in alpha/beta, only considering “complete” when they are no longer releasing updates.
You said for every mmo "in early phase of dev", the same song for the lastyears, which has lead to a lot of delayed or worse cancelled games. A lot of this list will not be playable in best case 2026...
Great vid as always lucky! Deffo missing your streams and vids on ESO!! Surprised that you didn’t mention new world Aeturnum thought you were gna Segway into it after discussing lotro mmo.. other thoughts Everquest 3 - very, very tentatively interested. I played several years of EQ1 back in 'the day' and loved it. Was my first MMO. EQ2 coming out at practically the same time as WoW seriously hurt it. I played it a tiny bit, but by that point I was already ensconced into WoW sadly Horizon Online - I havent played the SP games, though I do own the first one. Its on my long list of games to play, sorry. An MMO version of it does have me interested, and probably would more if I was more familiar with the world Warhammer MMO - Ok, this is Warhammer 40k, not Warhammer. Yes, its a big difference. I really loved the Warhammer MMO from like 18 years ago. A ton. Im still sad it failed. Not all that interested in 40k Archeage 2 - see my other post. Tentatively interested LOTR MMO - If this wasnt from Amazon I'd be way more interested. I only played the original LOTRO a bit but liked it, but I like the setting overall, and am enjoying Return to Moria Dune Awakening - Super interested! I'm always wary of Funcom stuff - I still remember what happened with Age of Conan. It was set to be my favorite MMO, even over WoW, but yeah. That said, they have done a good job with Conan Exiles, so maybe their internal culture has changed Ashes of Creation - Super interested, very eager. But I am not expecting it before 2030 at this point ;_; LoL MMO - Ive always been interested in the characters of LoL (mainly through the fanart), but Ive not played the game (nor am I willing to), so I dont know much about the world. Interest is kinda middle of the road.
Lord of the Rings should be bang on. After all, the only problem with LotRO is age. And it follows the books pretty faithfully. Which means the Amazon team has a measuring stick to compare their game to.
Eq2 was an amazing game..just at release you needed a very high end pc to play it. The graphics for that game at 2004 is still better then most games to this day.
The delay in New World content was due to Aeternum (spelling?) being developed. After it launches New World will pick up steam again. If I had to guess, based on previous marketing strategies, we will have a New World expansion by the end of 2025.
It picked up steam, then dropped right off again like it did on PC. Its not holding up well at all. Maybe if they put up a road map it would help. Doesn't seem like they are doing much outside of just re-releasing it with a raid
I would love to see a Star Wars Galaxies remake of the original before the dreaded Combat Upgrade, with a better engine, the farming and crafting was great, everything was unique and no 2 sets of armor or weapons were alike all based on the type of mats you gathered with multiple stats.
One of SWG's technical problems was precisely the uniqueness of the gear; the database requirements were overwhelming. But an even worse problem was as is always the case with these games that non-gamers called the shots and the shots were all about insatiable greed.
I want an action based mmo without a skill bar and cooldowns i want flashy fast paced combat like dragons dogma or the new final fantasy mixed with top end mmo
Everquest 3 would be a huge disappointment. I don't know much about Everquest 2 but currently Everquest has a patch about once a month. Some very small. Feels almost dead. It's been like that for a few years now. Almost no quality of life changes at all. They have the yearly expansion that comes out no matter what but usually it isn't even complete at release. The company doesn't want to get with modern mmo's that practically shower players with free stuff just for logging in and staying in game for a while.
What you said about soulframe is wrong. It is no where ready for full release in a recent dev stream the ceo has clairifed the game is still in a pre pre alpha and what is releasing this year is only an early access bulid which they will use with player feed back to improve the game untill they release the full game
Homecoming is great! However, I long for a modern superhero mmo with expansive character creation, great power choices (including support, tank, and heal powers), dungeon crawling, and pvp (if done right).
we need a new next gen superhero mmorpg. personally I'd love it in the dc universe like dcuo but done new, however could easily be a good opportunity for a marvel media turnaround as well. for those that played dcuo or city of heros etc imagine that w ue 5.5 graphics and updated systems?? peak
I mean WoW is old at this point, and has been treating its players bad for over a decade. It really won't take much to beat it. I say this as someone who played for 20 years. Honestly if they would just fire the people who are activists or mistreat those they work with they might actually have good content again. Will tak more than Chris Metson (I am glad they brought him back). This has kind been a problem with AAA studios period. Bad work culture or they hire activists, or both. The market will either course correct to what the majority consumers want (hasn't really changed much) or they will burn and smaller companies will have room to grow. So I am preparing to let it rot and not buy new stuff until the course correct.
There is Horizon Online by Ncsoft as you mentioned but that should be online coop. Horizon MMO is also made but I think its by Tencent and will be first in Asia :(
I am interested in Ashes of Creation, and I tried to pledge to them back in 2016, but it kept getting errors on the website. I am just waiting now, but maybe I will pay to get into the game earlier if I like what I see on your stream. :)
I know someone hired at ZOS for the MMO, he refuses to say anything about it other than "My god if they pull this off it'll be groundreaking"... Ugh. I just rolled my eyes at him and told him to shut-up. Lol.
PvP focused MMOs are such a terrible idea. Players will rush to max level to be stronger than others and then they’ll start complaining about a lack of endgame content.
Funcom and Dune... I am... interested? I mean I enjoyed the original version of The Secret World, and I like Conan Exiles, but overall Funcom seems to always end up kind of mid on everything they do, and Dune deserves more than that.
IMO Secret World to this day was the best MMO on the market, only they never really marketed it and nobody knew it existed. In time it only got dumped down wow-style and is just a shadow of itself today....such a waste
I've given up on the MMO genre. Maybe one will come out some day, that captures my time again like EQ, WoW, and even Rift did but it doesnt look like that is any time soon. They seem too expensive, time consuming and complex to develop. Then there is always the issue of what to do when the player base hits end game and there is almost nothing to do. Everyone compares the new game to existing games that have been around for a very long time and have had years and years to add content. In the end the same games have been on the same type of videos for like 5yrs and none of them seem to be any closer to launch. I'm sure the warframe one will launch in a reasonable time, outside of that who knows when or if any of these other games will actually come out. Usually when games drop of the list of videos like this, it isnt because they launched, its because they canceled, just went away, or just devolved into junk.
@@BjornStatenguard I tried it, its not for me. I just cant stand the art style. Its not the fantasy I'm looking for. The game play was pretty good. I just couldnt get into it.

It's a damn shame too, because what they were developing with Everquest next was revolutionary even by todays standards, the complete voxel system, the incredibly deep and dynamic npc/faction ecosystem, voxel base building system etc.
The lack of an auction house in ghost is kind of a double edged sword. If there isn't one in game, something will creep up online through discord or something. And of course there's always someone who will take advantage of flaws, leaving people essentially feeling robbed and no in game support.
Co-op PVP with a ranking system is 100% the best route to go. It captures both sides of the coin.
Can't wait to begrudgingly return to wow once they all inevitably fail. 😥
Ew
City of heroes is back if anyone played that game ran by the homecoming team they even got licensed to work on it.
I remember EverQuest next, spent money on it and got burned.
Lol, I don't think any of them will overtake WoW, but I'm excited for new MMOs regardless.
same here,FF14 tried
I agree, but they all look interesting
It's simply not possible. The objectively greatest MMO of all time could release, and it still wont, WoW just is TOO ingrained.
@@TheCurteousBear i have never touched WOW, i strictly play and enjoy ultima online still to this day. ultima online is the worlds greast mmo of all time, nothing nor anyone can ever change my mind on this.
Yeah, overtake WoW sure.. he just lost credibility with that statement.
When you're talking about Ashes of creation and them fighting a dragon, i remember with Everquest, a guild killed a dragon Lord Nagafen in Beta and Brad McQuaid didnt believe them, so next time they fought him, they either brought him along, or another one of the programmers to witness it
Sadly, my arthritis will be too bad to play these in 20 years.
Please never stop making these videos. Mmo is my favorite genre and videos like this gives me hope for the genre.
Super excited about horizon and warhammer
I liked the idea of everquests 2 mentor systyem(highest level player's level drops to lowest level player), but the highest level player sttill unleashes high amounts of dramage
Great vid for a lifelong MMO fan. Subbed
Great vid my dude, many thanks.
you forgot to put full time gamer as well :))))
Prob just a typo, but wow is not the top mmorpg anymore. You meant to say " one of these might even dethrone FFXIV"
If EverQuest 3 is a hit, I will lose my entire life (again).
wasn't everquest 3 shelved with them stopping "landmark"? I bought into that and still got nothing.
Despite the title (I get it clickbait make algorithm go brrrr) I thought this video was very level-headed, and based on reasonable expectations. Well done.
As usual another great video man!! I'm curious about the Horizon MMO and REALLY curious as to what ZOS is cooking up in the background!
same!
Another great video! Seems like Lucky's content just keeps getting better with every new video
This is by far the best MMO cover video I have seen in years. Good job and keep up the good work!.
Riot announced they are going dark on the mmo and there is rumors they are shelving it
The main issue I have had and still do is the crazy speed of content that is released.
I’m interested to see what happens with Star citizen as it develops more
What about the D & D 5th Edition MMORPG, in 2020 Hidden Path said they are working on?
Great video.
I really do miss Rift, I loved raiding with my guild in there.
Tera was dead due to lack of endgame.
The only game on the list I haven't heard of/tried was wizard 101 lol. 🙈
I'm not saying that they couldn't be developing 2 different games but, wasn't ArenaNet outted in an investor meeting as working on Guild Wars 3?
Isn't Arena Net the developers of Guild Wars 2? There was a leak from a shareholders meeting that Guild Wars 3 was in the making. Maybe those jobs posts are not for Horizon Online.
i love how you used Return to Moria footage for the LOTR MMO bit, Happy Durin's day
If Archeage 2 can build off of the concepts and ideas of 1, without the embarrassing levels of monetization, it could be good
I don't believe an MMO can or WILL overtake WoW unless it manages to do what WoW does, but better in every conceivable way.
@@jeremywright9511 None of this bothers me in the slightest.
Passionate designers and PLAYERS, cause most of Wow designers were actual mmo players some of them even HARDCORE mmo players. Very very rare nowadays.
Ffxiv already did a while ago m8
@BjornStatenguard Not even close imo. But you're free to feel that way.
I don't have 5 years to wait for a game I'm staying with world of warcraft
Throne and liberty is out in a couple of days so the 2025 date I’m confused
I think a case could be made for an MMO with only dps and support roles. But it would have to be an action style of combat, no tab targeting
I feel like "story" is a strong word when referring to Throne and Liberty. Also, while the overall model didn't change, they did actually significantly change aspects of the monetization for Western players.
Can someone tell me which game trailer was playing during the Zos MMo Bit?
So basically everything other than throne and liberty is TBA. When it says TBA, it probably means never
I believe the window for expecting games is going to be lower…but not due to technology advances.
Everything will be in alpha/beta, only considering “complete” when they are no longer releasing updates.
You said for every mmo "in early phase of dev", the same song for the lastyears, which has lead to a lot of delayed or worse cancelled games. A lot of this list will not be playable in best case 2026...
When Horizon first came out i wanted nothing more than to play it with friends, but sonys track record hasnt been great lately.
Great vid as always lucky! Deffo missing your streams and vids on ESO!! Surprised that you didn’t mention new world Aeturnum thought you were gna Segway into it after discussing lotro mmo..
Also watched the trailer for archeage chronicles during PlayStation presentation and I think it looks awesome!!
So, the footage shown during the LotR MMO speech is completely random right? It isn't a preview of the game correct? Because that doesn't feel Middle Earth at all.
That's footage of the new survival game that released. Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria.
Looks like it gets pretty good reviews besides jank in the combat.
The other footage is of New World.
i'd be surprised if anything will ever overtake WoW. I'd be a happy day because something good and new will finally be released xD
FF14 already did for a time when endwalker released
4:30 it is warhammer mmo right? not warhammer 40k mmo?
unannounced apparently, hopefully not 40k
What's the difference?
@@paragjyotinath666 If i remember, warhammer is set in the fantasy land with swords and magic. Warhammer 40k is set in space with space marines and alien
Throne and liberty is already out in early access. It is great
other thoughts
Everquest 3 - very, very tentatively interested. I played several years of EQ1 back in 'the day' and loved it. Was my first MMO. EQ2 coming out at practically the same time as WoW seriously hurt it. I played it a tiny bit, but by that point I was already ensconced into WoW sadly
Horizon Online - I havent played the SP games, though I do own the first one. Its on my long list of games to play, sorry. An MMO version of it does have me interested, and probably would more if I was more familiar with the world
Warhammer MMO - Ok, this is Warhammer 40k, not Warhammer. Yes, its a big difference. I really loved the Warhammer MMO from like 18 years ago. A ton. Im still sad it failed. Not all that interested in 40k
Archeage 2 - see my other post. Tentatively interested
LOTR MMO - If this wasnt from Amazon I'd be way more interested. I only played the original LOTRO a bit but liked it, but I like the setting overall, and am enjoying Return to Moria
Dune Awakening - Super interested! I'm always wary of Funcom stuff - I still remember what happened with Age of Conan. It was set to be my favorite MMO, even over WoW, but yeah. That said, they have done a good job with Conan Exiles, so maybe their internal culture has changed
Ashes of Creation - Super interested, very eager. But I am not expecting it before 2030 at this point ;_;
LoL MMO - Ive always been interested in the characters of LoL (mainly through the fanart), but Ive not played the game (nor am I willing to), so I dont know much about the world. Interest is kinda middle of the road.
I'm waiting for a new EverQuest like the game..
tech company need to develop affordable mixed reality device asap. mmo will be crazy when played using that
Lord of the Rings should be bang on.
You forgot the best one coming up . Pantheon, Rise of the Fallen, the real Everquest sequel
Archage 2... really?! Archage already failed me twice... not sure I am willing to give them a third chance.
But, but....BUT... you can't deny how good it looks 😬
@@hagu1005 😝😅
Yeah. I refuse to play a game where I can lose my house if I'm not subscribed.
I'd play ArcheAge 2 if housing is instanced and permanent.
Anything ever going to compare ESO for PvP gameplay? Crazy nothing compares
The company doesn't want to get with modern mmo's that practically shower players with free stuff just for logging in and staying in game for a while.
saying something is likely to overtake WoW is a wild statement after 20 years
What you said about soulframe is wrong. It is no where ready for full release in a recent dev stream the ceo has clairifed the game is still in a pre pre alpha and what is releasing this year is only an early access bulid which they will use with player feed back to improve the game untill they release the full game
Bring back a new version of City of Heroes !!
Check out City of Heroes Homecoming :D they have an official license too for it!
Homecoming is great! However, I long for a modern superhero mmo with expansive character creation, great power choices (including support, tank, and heal powers), dungeon crawling, and pvp (if done right).
How is Project LLL a fps? That looks like a tps...
Project LLL feels so much like Anthem. I hope it doesn't fail like Anthem because I want to play it.
we need a new next gen superhero mmorpg. personally I'd love it in the dc universe like dcuo but done new, however could easily be a good opportunity for a marvel media turnaround as well. for those that played dcuo or city of heros etc imagine that w ue 5.5 graphics and updated systems?? peak
wow MMO's future is bright thanks for this amazing vid
Horizon MMO is also made but I think its by Tencent and will be first in Asia :(
Oh i can't wait for the next game to overthrow wow, it's only been twenty years
You should make a video on Monsters & Memories. It will be true open world, with no instances and will be playable Jan 2026.
Hopefully some innovation will be happening here, that is a shot in the arm the genre needs IMHO.
I am interested in Ashes of Creation, and I tried to pledge to them back in 2016, but it kept getting errors on the website. I am just waiting now, but maybe I will pay to get into the game earlier if I like what I see on your stream. :)
Nothing will ever over take wow as long aas they keep pumping out content
Ff14 already did it
Archage 2 is what I'm looking forward to the most
I know someone hired at ZOS for the MMO, he refuses to say anything about it other than "My god if they pull this off it'll be groundreaking"... Ugh. I just rolled my eyes at him and told him to shut-up. Lol.
I was too distracted by the wow footage for Ghost. What is Ghost supposed to be again?
I would love to see a MMO that takes place in the Mass Effect Universe.
PvP focused MMOs are such a terrible idea. Players will rush to max level to be stronger than others and then they’ll start complaining about a lack of endgame content.
we love "this will kill wow" and it never ends up killing wow XD
You should play ffxiv
@@BjornStatenguard I tried it, its not for me. I just cant stand the art style. Its not the fantasy I'm looking for. The game play was pretty good. I just couldnt get into it.
You send 20 minutes watching a 'review' of mmo's when you realise it was only a Fkiing commercial!!!! Ffs
