Never would I have imagined that I’d spending twenty one minutes of my life getting a tutorial on how to make a Pb&J
That's because somehow the idea of teaching us the roots of the different ingredients and then how to make a better product. So what we got was a history major that also had some cooking information. And then a loose connection to something small. I'm not saying he shouldn't get credit for the actual context. It's the package that fails.

It's actually sad that you did waste 21 minutes.
When making jam instead of jelly, you can use processed and strained Granny Smith apples in place of pectin. Get rid of as much juice and just use the apple pulp. Granny Smith apples are loaded with pectin and does NOT make your jam bitter, so you can add as little sugar as you want. We add very little. Amazingly fresh tasting.
This is factually incorrect.
Yanks dont know the difference between jam and jelly
@@simpsimps553 In what way? Do the research. Green apples have a good amount of pectin. We use this method as well to create blueberry pie filling instead of making gelatinous goop like everyone else.
@@DANNY-bv7od AMERICAN JELLY IS NOT THE SAME AS YOUR JELLY AND JAM. All three different things. I don't know why this is so hard to understand.

Alex Mom: "Here's your PBJs!"

The key is to toast the damn bread! That’s all you need to do to make it feel “non-mass produced.” Toasting bread makes every sandwich better.
@@anti-ethniccleansing465 Yes, grilled peanut butter and strawberry spread is my new go-to. Gets warm enough that the PB and spread start to melt and run out. It's glorious. Game Changer that I am glad I tried out.

Grilled, you say? Interesting! I have never tried grilling it before, only toasting the bread for peanut butter and jam sandwiches.
I will have to give that a shot one of these days.
Strawberry is good, but I’m all about raspberry preserves/jam myself. Grape is just gross haha. ;)
P.S. you have given me an idea… Sometimes I will make peanut butter and sliced banana sandwiches by toasting the bread as well, but I bet it would taste really good grilling it.
I want to try that as well… Way back in the day when I was going to college, I used to make a peanut butter and banana sandwich (or use an English muffin) every morning to eat on my drive to school. It was very filling and got me through many hours of class.

This was very interesting. I noticed you mentioned Kellogg was a physician, but did not mention that Welch (and later his son) was a physician and a dentist. Welch and his son were both anti-alcohol, and made their grape juice as a substitute for a glass of wine. And "Grapelade" was pronounced as it is spelled.. My granny told me about this product a long time ago. Sounds like "marm-el-ade" but it's "grape-el-ade". Just thought you'd like to know. Again, this was very interesting. Thanks!
This is the comment we didn’t know we needed, but glad it’s here. I can’t wait for this to show up on a trivia game
He mentioned they were attempting to make a non-alcoholic version
With you mentioning Kellogg, I was reminded of rice crispies. Kellogg makes that, don’t they?
One of my favorite peanut butter treats when I was just starting college was from the pizza restaurant I used to work at. They had this frozen yogurt machine where you could create your own flavor by choosing either a plain or chocolate frozen yogurt-based, and then choosing from a wide variety of ingredients to add to it, and it would get crushed up in the machine and squeezed out like a soft serve ice cream (but in a bowl).
I had two favorite flavors… One of them was adding peanut butter and rice crispies into plain frozen yogurt, which had such a great flavor and texture! The other was adding crushed graham cracker crumbs and cream cheese to a plain base to create a cheesecake flavor. Both were beyond fabulous.
The road to wellness. ...great movie related to these early food families
He also didn't mention Kellogg was an idiot that created the curb flakes to help keep people from masturbating soo... Can't get it all in there lol
This reminded me of a time when my step kids were little and decided they wanted an omelette for breakfast. I had eggs, but nothing else to put in an omelette, not even cheese. So, I made them grape jelly omelettes and toast. When I served them up, the kids thought I was the coolest person ever. Score!!

I enjoyed watching this as PBJ is one of my all-time favorites. My mom canned everything, so I was probably in college before I ate jelly from a store. Every summer, we made plum, grape, and apricot-pineapple jams...yum! I still make my own jam as there really is no substitute. I hope others will give making their own jams and jellies a go...they won't go back!
I love doing PB&J “grilled cheese style” on the griddle when I want to bring it up a notch. Also Strawberry or Raspberry preserves instead of grape jelly. So good!
Pomegranate is also a good choice, still sweet and tart, but then pb&j is surprisingly one of the foods I splurge on getting pomegranate jelly and white chocolate wonderful peanut butter
Also pretty sure this is more like French toast :)
I did that once & the insides of the sandwich got too melts & leaked out the sides making a huge mess! 😣. What’s your technique for success?
@@mfar3016 Oh, no! I hate a big mess to clean up. I have found if I pre-toast the two sides of the bread to be the inside, that is a help. Then I use thicker, natural peanut or almond butter and preserves on the other side, keeping them slightly inside the bread boarder. I’ve also Pre-buttered the outside surface remaining to be toasted so as not to have to press on the sandwich more than necessary. After putting the two halves together, all that is left is to toast the outsides to your preferred goldenness. 😃 I promise it’s easier than it sounds and results in no or minimal mess to clean off your griddle. Good luck and happy cooking!
@@gypsybelle4757 You nailed it. Prob had this 5 times in the 13 days since you posted this. I slice thick (3/4" to 1") slices of French bread for this. YUM!
If you’re too worn out from making all the ingredients just grilling the sandwich (butter both sides, crisp it all up on a griddle) is less fancy but also exceptional.
Gateaux Q - Thanks! I was actually looking for some alternatives like that but stopped watching when he talked about making the ingredients. Save for possibly the bread, make-my-own will never happen

@Deborah Lancaster Condoms are not infallible.
Why would you use a condom to make a pb and j sandwich? Is that like a special French culinary technique or something?

Hey man, I really love your channel! I've leveled up a lot since I started watching but the one thing I can't seem to get is the timing. I never know what to start first when making a meal with a side dish. Could you make a video about time management in the kitchen?

It's seriously disturbed me When he just stuffed the peanut butter and jelly just into the Bread Like nothing.
I looked at that and was like WTF is he doing. It isn't no empanada... although that would be interesting fresh, but the bread would be soggy from the jelly AHHHH. Sorry, tangent, but then I saw the finished product
@@DuNdAlALa there was literally no fucking reason on this earth to do that. NONE.
After watching this I was inspired to make a PB&J sandwich using what I have (as in not being picky). Regular PB, strawberry preserves, multi-grain bread spread equal amounts of PB on one slice of bread then an equal amount of strawberry preserve on the other slice. Just buy bread, peanut butter, and jelly (or jam if you want an easier spread), and spread those across your bread with a butter knife.
Archy it’s amazing
American here: First heat the pan on a high heat until hot. Then lower it to medium. Then add a nice lump of good butter. After melted, add two slices of whole-wheat or favorite bread until toasted on one side. Remove from heat, add homemade raw peanut butter and mushed fresh strawberries with sugar in it on each side. Lightly heat the sandwich until lightly warm on the inside. Cut and eat it. It’s the very best way to eat it. It is. Trust me. It’s my favorite food😃 enjoy

The funny thing about a grilled cheese sandwich is that it doesn't have to be cooked on an actual grill.
Hamilton Champagne and it typically isn’t cooked on a grill
Exactly it shouldn't even be called a grilled cheese sandwich if it's not cooked on a grill. I feel like the term cheese toastie used in the UK makes more sense than grilled cheese because the bread is kinda toastie so it makes sense but it definitely doesn't make sense for it to be called "grilled cheese." Turn on the oven broiler.
Butter outside of bread slice, add peanut butter, preferably chunky variety, to inside. Hollow out a little depression in center of peanut butter.
Add jelly/jam of your desire, or whatever the jellish stuff leftover in the fridge is.
Take second bread slice, butter outside. Add a thin layer of peanut butter on the inside. This is to glue this contraption shut when you put the two pieces together.
Put the two slices together, butter out, of course, then slide it onto a low shelf in the oven.
When top starts to get toasty brown, flip it over and proceed to get the other side toasty. In my over, it’s 3 minutes per side.
Slide this rich toasty concoction out onto a heat resistant plate. Let sit for 5 minutes, if you have the will power, so the peanut butter doesn’t scald your mouth when chewed.

So when making jam, you can completely bypass adding pectin powder by instead making a pectin puree from apples and lemons. This is what i do with my lower pectin level fruits, and i find it adds an extra depth of flavour without really being discernible or overpowering.

Let me say something that might split the room. I had grape jelly my whole life. My husband introduced me to a PBJ with strawberry and holy shit it's so much better.
I use a raspberry one with seeds in it. I love the extra crunch it gives!
Definitely. Strawberry > Grape. Also Red Plum Jam is bomb too or Blackberry. Really Grape Jelly is like the most meh.
Grape Jam is far superior to Grape Jelly
Try apricot. It will change your life.
This is how it works in Canada.
The egg looks like an awesome idea. As a kid I used to put potato chips in pb&j. It was awesome.
My grandma used to grow sweet tomato plants and *yes* make HANDMADE strawbelly jelly with it. It was unique and I wouldn't even eat PBNJ without it.
I love how food is always cheaper and better in farmers markets.
He kind of looks like one of the main characters of onward
If they were pokemon it would be Tony Khan, this guy, then Eli Roth.
He looks like the main guy from ratatouille
William Reynoso lol
you and your channel is amazing
I’ve been eating/making grilled PBJs since I was little. Best thing ever!!😋🤤
As a kid, my sister used to have me make pb&j’s for her because I liked to put extra jelly in it and she always said it was perfect. I still think I’m proud of that, lol. I’m the pb&j master! Haha
I think it was a scam into having us make their sandwiches 😪😭😭😭😭
@@paulaangel8658 I was thinking the same thing, although I will say that a sandwich made by someone else always tastes better for some reason.
I saw the title and said “it’s just served with a can of beer”
Morning beer is acceptable when camping and tailgating. But what makes you think PB&J is breakfast? Course you could eat it anytime but it’s definitely more of a lunch or midday snack to hold you over till dinner
Anthony Truong that sounds disgusting
@@dmcgee3 its breakfast if ure in a hurry

Fun fact: I love peanut-butter. I love jelly. I even think the idea of them together is great. But I’ve never had a PB&J in my 23 years. I’m going to try tomorrow.
Update?
Update??
update?
I'm 30 and I still have pb&j every once in a while
Update?
You should try coating it in breadcrumbs before frying... its crunchy on the outside and mushy melt in your mouth pb&j inside... soooo good...
Love this!! All of your videos are great and definitely an inspiration to try new things and cook even more!! And who doesn’t love a pb&j
Most popular sandwich?
"Hold my beer" --grilled cheese
But first you have to make the bread, the cheese and turn it into french toast for no reason. After thats done Ill give you your beer back
"Hold my cold-slaw" -- Italian Hoagie
"Hold my milkshake" - Hamburger
Hell no 😂
Grilled PBJ is the bomb! Once I had one I couldn’t eat it cold anymore.
You can also cook the peanut, dry it before roasting. Very tasty and last longer.
LOVED the history behind !!
Oh my God,,, my mouth was watering through the whole episode.
Great episode.
Interesting. I'll have to try some of these
Omg I wish I weren't so lazy bc that looks INCREDIBLE! Lol Drooling now! 😂👏👏👏
Stopped watching after the first 20 seconds. What kind of psychopath puts the jelly ON TOP of the peanut butter instead of on the other bun??
Same here. 23 seconds, I can't do it.
Peanut butter on one side, jelly on the other. Spread ghee on one side and put onto panini press, ghee on the top and press that sucker down. THAT is a grownup PB&J.
Omnis One thats so fucked up. peanut butter on both sides jelly on onr
PB on both sides, jelly over one. It's not that out there man.
Thought the same thing!!
So all this time you never had a Real PBJ Sandwich lol....
The “adult” PB&J is easily the Double Stack PB&J. Because the singles just become child’s play after a while.
Yup...that shit is gourmet...damn near artesian lol!
Ah, a woman of culture. I tip my cap to you.
That's a different kind of adult though, that's a dutty sandwich
FWIW, peanut butter (like chocolate) is 'hydrophilic'--which means it absorbs water--and, as it does, it 'seizes'--literally turns into a delicious brick--until you add enough more water. You can use this feature to do some pretty cool things. As homemade/'natural' peanut butter is much looser than the processed version, you can add jam/jelly/banana/etc. to it and the water that they contain will tighten the whole thing up. (In the case of this recipe, it would keep the jelly from leaking all over the place.) For a simple, two-ingredient frosting/fruit dip, mix 1:1 peanut butter and yogurt. Yum!
I really disdain those chunky jams/jellies in my sandwiches so the one you made looked really appetizing.
