Balancing A Stickbait - Part 1. - The Basics

- So here's the first part of our stickbait balancing series. I've had some requests on how to balance out a stickbait properly. We're starting off with the easiest stickbaits which are the small ones. I'm sure I've forgotten about some info, however I want everyone involved so if you have any questions please ask! Specifics of the stickbait in the video:
Wood used: Mahogany
Balance weight added: 25grams
Terminal Tackle weight: 11grams (ratios change severely when making biggers stickbaits)
Good woods to start off with are:
Poplar
Mahogany
Pauwlonia (hard to find, but very good)
Cedar
Bass wood
Meranti
Any other wood that has a fine grain and is easy to craft.

Thank you very much for your response. I'm new in making stick bait lures. I'm using 0.062" stainless steel wire, the material of the stick bait weights approximately 2 oz , Hooks weight approximately 0.25 oz . I'm using Alaskan yellow cedar wood in making stick bait. I will be foiling the lure then use envirotex clear epoxy on top of the foiling . Thank you
Start of with 1/3rd of an ounce. Fix all the wiring and give it a base coat of paint or urethane and test it out to see if you need more weight to add. Not the length but the total volume is important to take into account. Hope that helps.

Thank you so much for this video! I was start to thinking that would be impossible to find content like this. I love fishing and I also love wood so I'm trying to make some stick bait from a while without properly success. Can I ask you something? Do you think it's possible to make a stick bait from a piece of lemon wood?
Thanks for the kind words! And yes, you can definitely make a stickbait out of lemon wood, I think you can make a stickbait out of most woods. Just make sure to take into consideration the density of the wood in relation to the balancing of the stickbait. Thanks for watching!

Very interesting, I have learnt loads. Do you ever take into consideration the fish eye distortion and how the fish actually see's the bait? Or am I thinking to hard lol. Now it's time for part 2.

Good video Bro! I was wondering since you’re from the Netherlands too, where and how do you buy your lures for the bigger fish like GT or tuna? I always find it a real heckle to search for lures in the Netherlands since there isn’t a lot to choose from. Right now I just buy brands like FCL or Temple Reef from Australian shops or from American shops. Unfortunately this costs a lot of money, especially on shipping costs. Since I’m a student I’d rather spend that money on my fishing trips Haha. Are you guys going to market with this lure you made? And do you have any tips for getting good lures from the EU? Cheers bro!
Hi Sami, I'm from the Netherlands but I'm currently living in the US. I used to live in Australia before that so it was a bit easier to get good GT lures. As far as I know, you'll have to order from online stores to get a good deal. I know Gibrocktuna.com is EU based and they have a decent selection of casting gear. For the rest I can advise to look at Japanese stores for cheap lures and buy a big batch at once so the shipping doesn't have as much of an impact on your total. We will be making these lures public however the guy that I'm working with on these lures is still making some adjustments. They are insanely good and super easy to work as you can just straight wind those stickbaits. We might be making a molded version of one of them once they have been perfected. is there any formula for weight placing ? To get erratic action of a subsurface stickbait do i need to put weight at the tail, and behind the belly hook is that correct? Thank you
No there is no formula, other than trying it out yourself... a lot. Sinking stickbaits and floating stickbaits are weighted completely different. I've got another video about balancing out stickbaits as well or rewatch this video and don't skip it. To understand how to balance a stickbait you have to pay close attention to everything in the video and try it for yourself. Mistakes are never bad, they are opportunities to learn more.
how do you make a stickbait as beginner?
this video (series) introduces the idea of stickbait making. This is as basic as it gets in regards to stickbaits. Stickbait (especially big floating ones) are the toughest lure to balance and so ideally you already have some experience with lure building. If you listen to the info in this video, it should help you a long way.

If you rewatch the video I talk about the variables with making a stickbait. Just by giving me the length of the lure doesn't give me any determining value for the amount of weight you put in it. How much does the wire weigh? How much does the material of the stickbait weigh? How much do the hooks weigh (including splitrings), what type of material are you using? Will you be foiling or painting the lure? What type of clear coat will you be using?
does this lure sit tail down, or horizontally? Very good information.

The stickbaits we make usually sit slightly tail down. We actually found that when fish (whehter that's GT, Tuna, or whatever other species) strike the stickbait on the pause; a lure that sits completely tail down has a worse hook up rate than one that sits diagonally in the water.
hi mate i was wondering how you get the tail kick instead of it just glide through the water.
It's explained in the video, it refers to the point between balanced and unbalanced. The lure has be be balanced enough to not spin on retrieve but there has to be a certain amount of instability for the lure to want to start spinning, no different with hard bodied lures with which the diving lip creates instability but the weight in the belly prevents it from spinning. If your stickbait does not have a tail kick and just glides straight through the water, you have balanced the lure too much. Reducing the balance weight or chaning its position by inserting it higher up in the body will create some instability. Find the sweet point and you're in!

West Oz Fishin, I know I'm a year late bud, and i'm trolling the comments while waiting for the nbn to download rest of this clip, so I haven't even watched it yet(?!?!?!)...... but ordinarily, to get a lure to 'glide' on its own between rod-twitches, instead of doing a sharp left/right and stalling, firstly, congrats, cos many struggle, and you've done it by accident! lol so, quite simply, your centre of gravity (COG) is in FRONT of the centre of drag. The weight is what gives the lure momentum to continue 'gliding' after you cease pulling on the line - move some weight back a bit, or make the lures leading edges a bit LESS streamlined.
Same as a throwing dart, or hunting arrow....It goes straightest with weight at forwardmost tip and the drag (feathers, etc) rearmost. Reverse that, and it trips itself as opposed to gliding.
Its the old shopping trolley steering physics agin ;)

Re-watch the video please. The information is in there. When a lure is unstable and starts spinning it requires more balance weight in the belly or less weight in the middle of the lure (I don't know how you weighted the lure).

My stick baits roll over, and skips when the sweeps are harder
There's a chance you can solve that with heavier hooks. Otherwise see if you can fit a small bit of extra weight in the belly of the lure; not too much as you don't want to make the balance point too heavy, your stickbait will stop swimming.
