Can The Blackest State Go Blue?

  • Mississippi native Stacey Abrams declared the state a “battleground state” as she and other activists work to flip one of the most reliably Republican states blue. After all, Democrats did it in Georgia, right? But in a state that has a long, painful history of slavery, brutal racism and voter suppression, is it even possible?
    AJ+ talked to Jackson Mayor Chockwe Antar Lumumba and civic engagement activists from across the state to examine Mississippi’s chances of becoming a toss-up state.

    • @amariongabriele9354
      @amariongabriele9354 3 года назад +37

      Yeah as a Native Georgian, Georgia is gaining a lot of people, especially Atlanta. Atlanta is a very attractive city for college degree voters, than anywhere in Mississippi or Alabama except maybe Huntsville. But because of high poverty levels, and low economic opportunity, A lot people aren't moving into MS or AL. A lot are actually moving out. So if college educated voters are needed in these two states, u have to make them attractive to live in. This is why NC and GA are growing so quickly compared to the rest of the south(I don't consider FL apart of the south). These states have growing economic opportunity, while SC, AL, and MS don't.

    • @TheGeoScholar
      @TheGeoScholar 3 года назад +17

      @@amariongabriele9354 I grew up in Georgia and I I currently live in Huntsville, AL. I can confirm this. Huntsville is growing rapidly. It's a place many people want to move to. Birmingham, however, is losing people. Montgomery is losing people too. The Black Belt region of Alabama is losing alot of people. Mississippi as a whole is struggling to keep its educated in the state.

    • @TheGeoScholar
      @TheGeoScholar 3 года назад +20

      As a Black man who grew up in Georgia, I can confirm this. There are many people who would blame Georgia flipping blue on "Californians". Alot of Black people moved to the Atlanta area from all over the country, including other parts of the Deep South. The brain drain from Mississippi and Alabama has meant that many educated Blacks from those states have gone to places like Georgia and North Carolina.

    • @amariongabriele9354
      @amariongabriele9354 3 года назад +12

      @@TheGeoScholar Yep. Stacey Abrams is a perfect example. She grew up in Mississippi, but as a college educated adult, she moved to Atlanta. Also I would say now that just because GA flipped blue 3 times, does not mean that GA is a safe haven for democrats. For the next decade, they are going to need to continue to fight hard to keep their edge in the state. Because African American voters are not reliable voters when it comes to turnout. Which is why if Stacey Abrams run for governor, she would significantly boost turnout in GA.

    • @amariongabriele9354

      @@TheGeoScholar Yeah It seems like Huntsville is the only bright spot in Alabama. And the only somewhat(and I am putting it at somewhat cuz its still not good) bright spot in MS is the Gulf Coast. And even that part of MS ain't that bright. Yeah MS and AL looks right now to have a somewhat depressing future. SC is slightly better than MS and AL, but not by much. TN is pretty okay, except Memphis. But u and I can agree that the Southern States of Georgia and North Carolina are vastly out growing their neighbors, to become economic powerhouses in the country.

    Mississippi used to be one of the "Solid South" Democratic states up to the 1960s. And yes, the Democratic Party was the party of segregation during this time. However, this changed in the 1960s when Lyndon B. Johnson passed the Civil Rights Act of 1964. This was the beginning of the end for Democratic dominance in Mississippi and much of the South. Mississippi would elect a Democrat two more times: Georgia native Jimmy Carter in 1976 and 1980. In addition to some of the lingering racial resentment during the late 1960s going into the 70s and early 80s, the Religious Right came to prominence. This drew the Deep South into the Republican fold alot, particularly with evangelicals. Now, there is a caveat here. Mississippi is the Blackest state in the USA. It's also the most religious state. Black Americans are by and large Christian. A larger percentage of Blacks are of the evangelical Christian churches than any other group in America. Hardly any Black Americans are part of that Religious Right movement. While many Blacks certainly share similar beliefs on moral issues that the Religious Right talks about, this isn't getting Black Americans to vote Republican. This is the case regardless of income, family status, church attendance etc. If Mississippi is to go blue, one of these scenarios would have to take place:
    1) Mississippi will have to get alot of outside migration from other states.
    2) Mississippi will have to be at least 50% Black (it stands at 37% Black currently)
    There are alot of racial, social, and socioeconomic factors as to why Mississippi has gone from being Solid South Democrat to being Republican today.

    It was incredibly inspiring to see ossoff and warnock to win georgia.
    Needless to see if bama or miss goes, it would be even better. All in die time. Republican's have had control for too long. I'm not a simp for the Democrats, but as long as america is suffocated by the two party system, they are our only chance for any semblance of progress (which is to say it's almost hopeless)

    The reason why Mississippi is so red is because 1) we are the most conservative state and 2) even though we have the most black people, most of them have lost the motivation to vote.

    • @ki2319

      @alex x Voter suppression specifically targets black and brown communities to stop them from voting. Maybe if you read a book once in a while, you’ll be able to connect the dots.
