It has it's own political history, It isn't the official motto of the U.S., and the goverment isn't supposed to favor any religious belifes over any other (that includes lack there of). The founding fathers may have been desists but they were firmly for seperation of church and state.
The only reason we have it was because it was added later durring the cold war and just as I am against the goverment favoring atheists and persecuting theists I am also against the opposite.
