American law specifies that the US presidential election happens in early November. It also specifies that the winner of that election isn’t actually sworn in until January 20th. That leaves about two and a half months in between, where, in situations where the incumbent has been voted out, the winner of the election still isn’t president. This is the “transition” period, during which the old administration trades places with the new one.
But does that period really need to be so long? In 2020, we found out what happens when an incumbent president loses reelection, but refuses to concede: Among other things, it pushes the start of the transition several weeks later, shortening that handover period. So does that matter? What actually happens in those two and a half months, and why do we let the loser continue to wield power for so long?

Broadly speaking, European governments have governmental professionals who remain through transition from one political party to the next, other than the highest ministers, which are put in place via a straightforward appointment system. The USA appoints their highest and assistant level officials, nominated by the President, and argued over by Congress, mainly the Senate. The stripping of executive management requires more transition time and the size of the US Federal system clogs the confirmation process, even when the Senate is friendly and the outgoing administration is gracious, neither of which apply here.

The video tapes are from security cameras within the room. The thing about this is that the video has no audio, and there is little context to it. Why would they keep counting when everyone was told to stop and go home? Moreover, why would they start counting right after the republican watchers left? A peaceful transition of power is an absolute MUST in democratic governments. For instance, California will always go blue and Texas will always go red and even though they can call on candidate early, it still have week of counting voted and certify it.

The real question is why have so many political appointees instead of a (normal in every other western country) permanent civil service
I was so confused about this too (I live in the UK). Like why do you guys change your teams every new president? We have a civil service which stays the same no matter the administration, allowing an actually smooth transition. The civil service are well-trained so they just follow instructions according to what the gov want to do

Still hasn't explained why US waits 2.5 months. UK does it in a couple of days. Getting new staff in and getting them up to speed in various departments doesn't have to happen before the new leader is in charge. The whole thing is bizarre.
I think the US has a lot more appointed positions rather than permeant ones.
The U.K.'s government isn't as big. It's like saying "Why doesn't the City of New York just use a single one room schoolhouse like my village of 100 people does??"
Even just the election process in America is on a scale the U.K. couldn't conceive of, and the states need time to certify their votes. That's why the electoral vote is in December. The certification of the electoral votes doesn't happen until January 6th.
TLDR: bureaucracies are not known for their ability to pivot quickly.
I think the biggest takeaway from the Trump presidency is that some "traditions" need to be "rules".

In my country, the the last transfer of power took over three weeks, and it really felt like it was being dragged out. I think it helps that Canada has permanent public service with very few truly only political appointees directly tied to the Minister.
Its called basic respect and decorum between leaders. Trump is so petty and childish.

Ah, yes. Changing government emails... A beloved tradition dating to the 1790s.
Did they really mention Opening Emails ?
Back then, it was the telegraph!
It used to be even longer. Until the 1930's inauguration day was March 4th.
I don't understand why anyone is throwing a fit about this.
It's annoying that Biden and Harris are both going to step aside nicely, with Harris already having conceded, and Biden not likely to set up any barriers to the transition unlike the sore loser who still hasn't admitted that he lost in 2020.

I don't know why Trump made it a big deal that he didn't win the presidential election. It's not like if he ever won the popular vote.
Here in the UK, that transition of power happens in a few hours on the night of the election.
same in canada. we dont waste time lol
Hello
Yes, because it is another member of Parliament that takes over, am I correct?
Who watch this in 2024?
It's been January 20th since 1937. The 20th Amendment to the Constitution designated Inauguration Day as January 20.
Prior to the ratification of this Amendment, there was no set date in the Constitution. March 4, 1789 was destination as the date of start of government business. Since then until 1937, it's been March 4th.
That's nothing new, folks.
Who is here in 2024 to celebrate Trumps come back
I think in the UK it’s easier because everyone who works for the government (called civil servants) has to be ‘politically neutral’ so they don’t have to rehire everyone
