My friend and I are wanting to make and print our own chess board, thanks for helping get us started with this!
This answered a question I was having the hardest time answering, how do you design a custom set of verteces?? Nobody said you could just start with a vertex and extrude them this way and that! This is huge.
A gem of a tutorial really, never used a screw modifier before!
I'll be binging these from now on
I love this format, and can't I wait to dive into more of these tutorials, considering buying the courses too! Can't believe I didn't know more about this screw modifier.
Last time I was do exercise modelling the chess and like Mr. Grant said, ' there is nothing right or wrong to do the style modelling.' Of course, I'm going to start with the cube and extrude style. End up I was stop at knight pieces until now lol. Anyways I do really learn the skew modifier. Thanks, Mr. Grant for the tutorial!
Thanks for this, i had fallen out of 3d modeling due to lack of drive and this is a simple but cool idea to get me back. :)
Did the first pawn video a few weeks back. It's interesting to notice the difference in decisions made now vs then, and how much less clumsy you are after a little training. I just did the usual extrude, scale, and bevel. The only things I did differently from someone a few weeks less experienced was start with a 16 sided cylinder for easier mesh and keeping it divisible by 4, extrude out the ball on top and turn the ngon into quads with some insets and gridfill, then make it nice and spherical by using shift+alt+s for to sphere. Last time I added a sphere, cut the bottom, and merged the vertices to the piece.
Great tutorial well explained. Great for simple modeling portfolios
this channel is a gem for people who wants to learn this.
for creating a vertex, you can also enable "Add Mesh: Extra Objects" Add-on. After that you can just add a single vertex with:
Shift + A >> Mesh >> Single Vert >> Add Single Vert.
it's a built-in add-on, you don't have to download anything.
Great Video, I had no idea about the screw modifier. Thank you :D
that felt so simple! thanks !
I remember the old gamedev tv course had a different approach, nice to see a more simplified approach :D
Your videos are 1st class, Grant!
Wow. I thought I made a good attempt at my own, but then I followed along and used the screw modifier...and there´s no comparing them. Thank you for this series I am definitely going to make a whole set!
Overall good entry video. Thank you 👍
Thank you a lot sir !!!! i've tryed by my own to do a pawn with my knowledge but i was really wrong in the process. Thank you!
First! Thanks for being a great community leader Grant, love all your videos.
man , no matter how many times i make that pawn , yours just looks better !!!!!!!!!!!!!!
great content Grant as always !!!
Another banger video!keep rolling out the hits!
Beautiful presentation as always
Really nice tutorial! I did it immediately, thanks! Quick, nice things help me to get motivated again and continue my learning :)
Hi Volodymyr, where did you find the pawn image? I could not locate it. Thanks!
@@Artistram3d1 I didn't. There's no one :D I just googled something similar.
great stuff Grant, you are doing awesome work!
I tried my hand at a chess set recently without help just to practice. It’ll be great to compare how well I did tackling it using what’s already in my toolbox. Very interested in the rook and queen.
Thank you! I learned so much things him udemy courses.
Great to hear!
Thank you Grant!
Thank you so much, this has made my editing so much more efficient :D
Got it done, teaches the feness on/of the mouse.
This was very helpful, Thank you very much.
haha I made it like you did. Im happy. :). All the best mate.
Sheesh screw modifier kinda powerful
Big fan sir love from India ❤️
Thanks Grant
thank you
can't wait for the bishop tutorial Grant. Have had a crack, but sure I'm not doing it right. too many triangles but not sure how to turn them into quads.
Yeah that's the advanced one 😀
Awsome tutorial!!!
GREAT VIDEO
always the best
Thank you!
Would it be a good idea here to instead of using the View settings to flip w the checkmark, to instead, flip the normals of the faces using the recalculate normals outer flyout menu? PS love your channel and your content, it's be sooo helpful for me to learn blender! thanks m8
Beginning B. Like your style, not so fast that one looses what you're doing. I'll get stuck on it. Thanks
Cool video, you can add showing pressed keys , it will help many people
Thanks 🙏🏻
ur the king
OMG! I'm sitting here like "WHY CANT I SEE MY VERTEX!?!?!" ....herp derp I was in Edge view
You are not alone >.
you should do more advance tutorial
On there way
Tried following along but couldn't locate the pawn image. Maybe I need new glasses? 🤓Really appreciate your tutorials, thank you so much!
can you do the same with knight ?
Nice april fools joke a bit too obvious though like who would belive we could improve in blender
😂😂😂😂
I started laughing until the reality hit and then....there were only tears
Hi, Grant. I was thinking about AI and the future for programmers and Blender Designers.
I love Blender, but I am worried about AI.
Can you give me your opinion? Have you something to say to get hope about our future?
Its a bit hard to answer since we cant predict what will be the possibilities in the future.. but it "might" be the same with art ..
Brilliant!
How might you use the screw modifier to make non-rounded chess pieces? For instance, some rook pieces might have square tops rather than rounded, or the crown of a king piece is typically not rounded.
i second that please we want next for other pieces
Next tutorial
@@grabbitt you just rock man. Short videos, well explained, concrete. Thank you very much.
As a regular Adobe Ai user, why is it so difficult to import useable vector shapes into Blender? For instance if I draw this pawn shape in Ai, and import it as an SVG, it creates an internal structure filled with faces. What am I doing wrong? I'd much rather draw my shapes in Ai and then 'screw' them in Blender.
Thanks for the video! Unfortunately, I can't close the holes. Minute 7:22 I have selected the model using Object Mode. But when I go to the merge option the holes do not disappear.
I am a complete novice 🙂
you must be in edit mode for this
Good mathod
Awesome!
Nice to hear from you again Kai :) and thanks
Would this be great way to make chess pieces if you wanted to have fancy texturing to them?
Yes
Hi, did you apply the modifiers at the end?
if you dont need to apply them then dont
@@grabbitt thank you for the reply.
5:58 you can select these points and move them... but how? after selected you can not just move them.
Hi, why it takes sooo long to recieve the image reference. Didin't get any of the ref chess images. Can you create another link plz. Something faster
I'll try and sort something. Might be easiest just to screen shot
Your'e right. Didnt think about this solution. Thank you !
I made Chess Piece Pawn Before you made by 1 cylinder and a UV sphere at top, its looking same like your, but Cant Join UV sphere to cylinder perfectly. Let me see how you made.
and i made is without any image xD. just extrude, Scale, bros
I used the spin tool instead of the screw modifier on my first try, so close lol
👍👍👍
How to hide those vertices ?? Plz help
Press h to hide
@@grabbitt thank you sir 🙏🙏
2:42 it's not working on me :(
I've tried 3 different time to get the assets so I would have the reference image and the email never shows up.
Sned me your email and I'll send it out manually
@@grabbitt I finally managed to get it, had to use a different browser and clear out all history, then tried again and it was there this morning. Thanks for the offer tho.
I can't seem to download your assets for some reason I have tryed 5 times now and nothing, Been trying for 3 days
Send me your email
after applying the subdivision surface modifier my pawn disappears. Does anyone have an idea as to why this is?
Not sure why that would be. Perhaps a bug
Lovely... Tried joining your Discord but the link has expired though
Thanks, I'll try and sort that shortly
@@grabbitt you're welcome... Can you please notify me when you've? I'm really looking forward to joining your discord
Refreshing to watch a video that cares not about this dreadful date
Make me a chess piece for school please
I suck at blender I need your help for school
That merge thing in the screw is not really working for me...
It does merge, but the shading is awful (like a subdivided UV sphere, awful)
Adjust the position of the vert slightly
1:00 ALT+G ok, ALT+R does nothing. version blender 4.1. had to google 30 min just to lay down the image so i can follow your video. have not watched to the end yet.
With the Brit accent "pawn" and "porn" sound exactly the same. Queen pawn 3 now has a very different meaning... I'M SORRY!
You were going well until you screwed it up.
😀
