(Adding preface, this is the USA, a school in Alabama is not the same as in Colorado. Our system can be wildly different or just as similar. That said, this is my experience with my school district) It is parents. I did tech work in schools for a company. Got a bully getting away with everything, there is a parent in the office everyday yelling at the office staff to keep them in class. Kids seemingly out of control, guess who is showing up to demand their child be left to their devices? What's funny is these people then are the same with cars covered in slogans about how you must be insane if you're transitioning. But their kids, running the halls, screaming, that's just them being creative! And then the saddest part is when the parent is clearly trying, they are all in it together but they just do not have the time. Title 1 schools where parents looked half dead, coming in trying to meet on a day they have some time, because they have to pay the bills. I can tell you, there is a *massive* difference when a place is clearly surrounded by good paying jobs and when a place is the, what we used to call "middle class," jobs and boy howdy, the kids get time with parents in those neighborhoods and it shows. Same district/county by the way.

Tbf overseas English teachers aren't real teachers, they don't lesson plan, grade, or structure anything, they just show up and speak English at the kids. There's usually a real teacher in the classroom, and you don't need any sort of degree to be one of these teachers.
Teaching overseas is not easy but it's not the same as teaching in your home country. It's not comparable when you're not fluent in the native language, and NL doesn't speak Korean like a native.

i mean this is why teachers are so cooked in the first place. they refuse to even understand what kids are in to. which is honestly part of the job yet they still have this archaic view that all streamers = bad. NL is one of the few streamers id even allow my younger teen even watch. yet they are treating him like some random scumbag because he streams. cant they see what they are doing? they are mad everyone hates teachers but do the exact same thing to another profession. that sub deserves to get hated on.
Teaching doesn’t pay well, and is a very specific job. You end up there for 1 of 3 reasons. You genuinely love children and their future (rare due to pay), You failed to do anything better with your degree (uncommon but happens), or the most common reason being that you are power hungry and love the idea of rooms full of people being under your thumb. Due to the last reason, they are the absolute worst at teaching because they don’t care about it, and the job is so much harder for them because they just want to control the kids. A normal person would be much better at teaching than many with degrees for this reason
(preface this is in my county, schools vary in the US with similarities and differences, this is just my point of view) It's not NL they are mad about really, no kids in school mention him. I got to do tech in schools, where I went all over. There is an issue of kids who are getting very radical information from streamers and then pushing that at the schools, under the guise of entertainment. We see the same issues out of Fox News and adults. The problem for teachers is they come under attack for doing the same job they used to do. The real problem I see in my county, parents have gotten less and less time to spend with kids and this is due to work and the need for money. The jobs used to allow these parents times to spend with their kids, now they need two jobs. Then you do have the extremist parents as well. They scream about the books in the library just the same as their kids scream down the hall. Grand parents coming in and protecting high school aged..young adults, who just camp outside the fast food across the street and bully other students. I have worked the places with higher paying jobs as well and there is a difference. Parents have time to spend with their kids, the money to take the kids places, pay for their inclusion in sport, give money for after school programs. A school where most of the kids were on free or reduced lunch could not afford to pay for after school programs this year, just after they closed the school down the street that did have programs and combined the two schools. Our superintendent got their bonus this year.

I teach biology at a few colleges in the california central valley. The biggest problem we face is students who cannot read or do basic math, which is a huge problem. I dont blame the kids, I blame their lazy teachers who didnt bother to teach them in public school, the idiotic admins who forced through no child left behind, and in general a removal of barriers and evaluations for entry into a colligate setting (especially community colleges). I think its fair to say if you cannot find a perentage or read you ahould not have been admitted to a college, and instead you need remedial education to get you up to speed first (adult remedial education options also should be heavily expanded to address this need). Admin admits almost anyone who applies and doesnt do any skill evaluation because they want to take those students money. I try and take a few lessons to blast through some remedial math and english, but I'm teaching major specific biology courses, this is not what I was hired for, and I've never been trained in how to teach math or english. The students themselves are fully aware of the situation, and while you have disrespectful behavior or disruptive behavior sometimes (admittedly always tied to electronics, but i remember reading books and doodling under my desk in school, this is nothing new generationally), they mostly are polite and attentive, and the disruptive kids respond immediately to discipline. I'd say that public achool teachers need to be much, MUCH more aggressively vetted and trained, for many people i know teaching in lower division public achools was a backup plan since those jobs are so easy to get. People dont try hard on a backup job, and teaching is too important of a job for us to use it as a reservation for burnouts from other fields. It should be HARD to become a teacher, it should probably require a masters degree, and it should CERTAINLY involve heavy psychological vetting. You shouldnt teach if you dont like teaching.

They're cooked because of their ipads and a society that treats teachers like garbage. Sucks that NL has to be part of that.
Same district/county by the way.

they did and tried saying teaching overseas doesn't compare so he doesn't know what he is talking about lol no clue what they are on about
Tbf overseas English teachers aren't real teachers, they don't lesson plan, grade, or structure anything, they just show up and speak English at the kids. There's usually a real teacher in the classroom, and you don't need any sort of degree to be one of these teachers.
Teaching overseas is not easy but it's not the same as teaching in your home country. It's not comparable when you're not fluent in the native language, and NL doesn't speak Korean like a native.

Oh you love library? Name every single book
A normal person would be much better at teaching than many with degrees for this reason

the balls to go after teachers, a group of people who are so ego-driven and self righteous is greatly appreciated
Extraordinarily empathetic, poignant and nuanced take +2
Isnt it weird how this kind of pushback only comes against the right? Sinn Fein is taking over Ireland without hating immigrants and no ones really panicking about it... Fuck man, I hate PR being a requirement in politics so much😭😭
I teach biology at a few colleges in the california central valley.

On the end of r/teachers, I fully understand just wanting to let off some steam from work. I think NL has a point that you can do this amongst co-workers, but also don't think it's the worst policy if someone preferred ranting to strangers instead of bad-mouthing children and teens to people who personally *KNOW* those kids and teens and may be affected by your rant.
And on NL's end, I think the comment shown completely misrepresents him and does a poor job arguing back.
*Something people should do though is click the damned link themselves: how heavily edited is this to play up the drama?*
Only the first, top comment was shown and another comment about "grifters," which was marked as controversial and not popular. The other top comments either seem to give sympathy to NL or to say there's no need or value in creating a drama beef out of this. The thread's initial comment was even removed by the mods.
