supremely underrated comment
Love tuning into NL's weekly rant about how every game should be more like Isaac
and Isaac should be more like older versions of Isaac
@@bmranr damn new Isaac versions, they ruined Isaac
AAA games are genuine dogshit
he's right though
@@B2Rolanddo you know why?
I deeply appreciate him cutting himself off right before reverse engineering different levels of smithing stones while ranting against different levels of smithing stones.
The "why doesn't he just punch through the door" bit of the rant genuinely reminded me why enjoyed Doom 2016 so much. It really knows what are the fun bits and what is just filler. whenever doom guy looks like he's gonna be stopped by some locked or malfunctioning thing that might need some kind of puzzle aspect to solve he just breaks it or "punches through the door" to get to the next fun bit quicker.
Odd comment because I distinctly remember dropping DOOM 2016 because I didn't know how to continue, one time it was because of a key card or some such thing. Maybe I'm just rarted, but it turned me off so badly that I've just never played on beyond that point
I can't stop laughing when kate hit him with the "who asked" and then "who cares" lmao
the true chat's champion
one thing NL got 100% right is the npcs pointing out what you are supposed to be looking at /interacting with every 5 seconds when you just started looking at the obstacles 10 seconds ago
Yeah that shit was wack. Loved the game as a whole though. Except for that 2-3 hour atreus fetch quest that was not it
@@RozKounelakion I loved the whole game too but for some reason it just didnt have the magic that 2018 gow had for me. The sequence of kratos getting the blades of chaos in 2018 was like peak gaming for me. I feel like ragnarok is probably the better game in every department but it didnt capture me the same way
@@AnthonyJSullivan yeah I'll admit that the blades of chaos scene was something else that first time around. But after ragnarok's first hour I was hooked on that as well lol
@@RozKounelakion ragnarok excelled in way more areas than 2018 did too to be fair. the final act of ragnarok is really good. we straight up go gow 3 mode out here with that assault
@@AnthonyJSullivan I really liked the combat as well. It felt really good to just fight NPC's in ragnarok. Some of the complaints I had about GOW 2018 were the enemy variety and the fact that each enemy had like one execution animation and they fixed both of those things, made the combat more enjoyable and satisfying etc. I really think I can count the complaints I have with ragnarok on my fingers and half of them can be attributed to the fact that I played it on a base 2014 ps4 lmao
The thing is... That violence from the oppressor is simply not the same as violence from the oppressed

It's naive attempt at fake sophistication.
Pretty upsetting to see NL bashing these small games while on his hands and knees for Vampire Survivors….
I agree! But, small? Really?
@@_MartinChess_ its a joke
As someone who watched my financé play Ragnarok and was in no way engaged with the story, the bit about riding around on a dogsled while a head talks to you in a Scottish accent made me laugh so hard, I snorted.
Can't believe he finally went on a rant here, despite assuring us over and over that doing so was expressly against his intent
House of Leaves audiobook is a great bit lmfao
"I can't unlock this door WHY DON'T YOU HAVE HIM JUST FUCKIN PUNCH THROUGH THE DOOR"
ngl he is kind of spitting
That shit is in every game. In elden ring, someone who rivals the elden lord in strength and power can die to a lowly skeleton
@@_MartinChess_ Yeah but the concept ties that you are a low level nobody , that's the point .
@@_MartinChess_ Okay except most other games aren't trying to convince me that this isn't a game. GOW is trying to convince me that the story I'm seeing is real, once you see shit like "just punch through the door" but games won't let me, then that illusion of it not being a game falls.

I love slay the spire.

I disagree with some of what NL is saying about GoW specifically but buried beneath is I think a genuinely great point. That gaming media outlets put so much value on big budget triple A games that they overshadow indie games that lack the same spectacle but excel in their gameplay, and that there’s this belief that the triple A game that’s ridiculously massive in scale and graphically advanced is seen as the superior gaming experience by default, and that more value is placed on games that try and do everything rather then just doing one thing exceptionally well. I’d say a better example to use as opposed to God of War is Cyberpunk, considering the game awards treated it similarly, including nominating it way too early despite being way less fun to play then many games released that year that weren’t nominated.
I'd agree that cyberpunk was nominated too early, but at least the developers have brought it up to where it should have been then. Like currently, it really is just right.
@@omniimmortal9950 CDPR never got it anywhere near where they advertised to be. The game still feels lifeless and empty. Individual stories and missions are great, but the world is so janky and un-cyberpunk. It feels more like Saints Row than it does cyberpunk. It would have been better if it were on rails and not "open world"
What are you talking about triple A games get a ton of shit just like Marvel does in the film industry. We should stop acting like we're misunderstood unique quirky fellas for our love towards indie games and AAA games are too below us all when in reality I can't go through a day online without someone shitting on how formulaic AAA games are. NakeyJakey for example, has videos with millions of views critiquing AAA, and they all agree with him. But god no, our belief can't be popular belief. Come on.
@@lautaroescarlon7501 "this one youtuber made a video thats liked" yeah people critique Marvel and many agree, but look at the actual NUMBERS its the biggest most viewed movie franchise EVER. Many people loved Bladerunner2049, and its close to a cinematic failure when it comes to ticket sales.
@@Blaurot Yeah, but the amount of people who think Marvel makes actually outstanding movies is less than those who think they're popcorn flicks. They're popular because it's easy to watch and pass time not because they're genuinely great. Even Marvel fans critique Marvel. The average person doesn't think Marvel Movie 101 is better than Blade Runner, but one is considerably easier to digest than the other.

I think he nailed it with the point about maximalist game design. So many games nowadays try and do so many different things that the games become less fun to engage with. This includes a lot of indie games as well unfortunately. I can enjoy the odd game like that, but they are very tiring, and most of the time it's just more fun to play a game that does a couple of things very well.
GoW is a prime example of this for me. The story might be good but the gameplay loop gets in the way of truly enjoying the story, and then all the other added mechanics like the rpg systems get in the way of just enjoying the combat. Plus it feels like they restricted the enjoyment of the game for the sake of immersion or world building.
i also think that a ton of design elements in GoW are at odds. the way characters almost immediately will explain what to look at, what it is and where to go makes it seem like they think their target audience is toddlers and then will also have stat descriptions with 2 decimal point percentages expecting anyone to actually focus on them.
love the way he scrambles to reassure everyone that he thinks the god of war story is good before going relentless on elden ring dialogue, lmaoo
I am watching this VOD more than 6 months later.

I love how in this rant, there were so many enjoyable tangents, but they all came back to God of War. Egg at his comedy best!
Vod is recommended to me a year later- NL undefeated on his predictions again
I'm disappointed that this is a year old instead of 6 months
This is absolutely my favorite piece of northernlion content to have ever been made.
1 year later here I am trying to go to sleep watching this knowing that when I fall to sleep I will have to go back in the playlist to find where I left off.
Thanks for having the current game being played in the info! 👍I've been watching some clips but had never heard of it. Looks fun.
First person to mod Mimir's dialogue on the pc version to just be NL gaming rants can feel free to come back and pay me for the idea, we have Homer Kratos, SURELY this can be done.
I’m watching over a year later…
To be fair it's a year after this came out, and I have no idea who this guy is, but the rant is funny.
That was hilarious, egg was goin' off. As a GoW fan too, he's completely right.
Im on a playthrough of Ragnarok right now and I think the game is more fun than he is willing to give credit for during the bit, but im not even that far into the game and I'm already sick of how many times you come across the "Press O to cling to this wall, crawl under this small tunnel, shimmy across this chasm, etc. etc." It seems like its in this game 10x more than the first. I saw you flip a whole ass temple before Kratos I know you can literally just hulk-jump that shit. And yes I know that's how they hide loading screens.
i just don't see how it's "more fun". walking, tapping X, cutscene, walking, tapping X, cutscene
Is the combat the same, shit was garbage.
just gimme back the loading screen ffs
It's fun for boring people.
I'm so glad I didn't buy that shit. It litterally is cut scene, walking simulator, hog riding simulator, canoe simulator, and quick time events that YOU CANNOT FAIL! How do you make QTE that have no sense of urgency or threats. Game is damn near 60% of what I mentioned above. Shit is ridiculous😂

15:15 brother I'm watching this VOD 9 months from then
I do indeed watch this vod 6 months from then
NL doing a mimir impression made me LMAO
@Christopher if you have your know how annoying he is
I understand big metal doors from magical god civilizations can hold out magical gods. But Kratos should not respect a wood barred fence. Kind of like how he doesn't bother opening wooden chests properly.
Also sometimes when you know that you yourself could get past that puzzle by climbing around it. Then we have some immersion breaking going on.
NL truly desires smooth brain interface and big brain mechanics
Simple UI with surprisingly deep mechanics is peak game design.
Honestly his point that no one could really critique a currency/upgrade system for being too elegant & the general idea that if the same result can be done with fewer steps in terms of elements that aren’t the essential gameplay then why not isn’t bad. It is very immersive for a fantasy world to have multiple materials indeed but when we’re talking about the difference between a game like Minecraft & GoW maybe one can deal with a bit less of that granularity
I for one never got the upgrade materials rant when it comes to linear games like god of War because you don't have to stress about farming an enemy that drops the mats you're looking for or something like that. You just play the game and while going through it you will find the enemies that drop the mats you need and at some point you will go to the shop and be like "oh look I can upgrade my shit now". The game is literally made in a way where the materials you need *will* drop when the people that made it deemed it appropriate for them to drop. I can very much understand the same complaint for MMORPGs where you're missing one thing and have no clue what you have to farm to get it though
but if the game is so linear that you just gradually upgrade everything over time instead of farming, why even have the mechanic? Why not just automatically upgrade it or have only one currency instead of a variety if the variety doesn't even matter?
I am indeed watching this nearly 2 years later
As someone who has actually *played* the new god of war, I really believe that the busywork that NL is alking about was barely present in the game. The side quests were really well written stories for the most part, or otherwise incredibly easy to avoid, and the main story puzzles weren't particularly egregious or time consuming in any way. Maybe I'm wrong, but this feels like NL reinforcing his own bias with an extremely limited sample size to go off of.
I never felt like I had to go out of my way to upgrade anything/optimize my skills. There wasn't any currency grinding that I can think of, and XP for leveling skills felt more than plentiful.
Oh wow, somebody in this insufferable comment section that actually played the game!
I have to agree, although I only played the new GoW and I'm still at the beginning of Ragnarok due to business with work.
Really liked the game although I'm more of a FromSoft or competitive gaming Stan

watching this 6 months from when it aired
"I can't get through this door"
Don't really watch Northernlion but I get what he means when a lot of AAA games feel like a Ubisoft game. Once you've played them once you've played them all (third person action game with light rpg elements that's open world) and they never really feel that exciting to play because they're always dumbed down.
15:23 "Noone's watching this vod 6 months from now." Uh oh.
THERE ARE DOZENS OF US
How has NL not realized yet that every award show is just an appreciation of the industry for the industry and not for the consumer. Its about creative, economical and technical accomplishments more than "is this game genuinely fun".
the response to "baldur?" kills me
its been a while since I listened in on Sir Egg from the great North, but damn he's still got it 🤣🤣
aged like fine wine, thanks to YT recs
It’s funny cause a lot of the stuff he’s saying applies to Elden Ring as well, lol. His Mimir impression and the silliness of the puzzles is spot on though.
True lol. Both are fantastic regardless despite some flaws imo
Like what? Genuine question
@@akshaydalvi1534 Like, everything about 3rd person action adventure games, lol. To be fair, Elden Ring very much breaks from tradition in the genre, which is probably why he likes it so much.
Difference is you aren’t forced to sit through crafting, or any of its shortcomings in elden ring. It’s a game about fighting hard bosses and clearing dungeons. It feeds you that on a silver platter. The anything that might be seen as not fun are always optional to the core mechanics of the game
@@Ragnell123 yeah i get it, its just that difference in player freedom between GOW and ER is like night and day lol. They feel like completely different genres even if they are both 3rdP action games
these thumbnails are so good
damn he really got me on the watching this months later
Btw, I can totally understand what you mean when you say indie games don't get appreciated enough. Games with simple mechanics, but done well because they know what their focus is. I personally would pick Elden Ring because I can spend a bajillion hours in that and not get bored, but there's an argument to be made for something like Inscryption or Cult of the Lamb. If Inscryption were nominated, then top of my list for sure. Cult of the lamb was fun as well and I got sucked into that for a while, but I can't say it's the best game of the year. It was just a fun way to spend my time for a while when I had nothing else to do. Also Super Auto Pets is extremely fun and I have no clue why.
I think one of the reason people like Elden ring and Froms recent games in general is that they stick to the “do one thing and do it well” formula.
The Game Awards is like if a marvel super fan ran the Oscars
I'm watching this 12 months from then and I'm laughin. Or at least chucklin
i'm watching this vod a year from then
I watched a vod 10 months later. It was all really funny.
It comes down to the fact that awards arent given to the best games they are given to what is voted on within whatever was popular that year
15:30 yes I am watching this right now
Anyone who was genuinely antagonized by points he made and chose to interpret his chastisement of the industry as a personal attack fully missed the point. Its honestly so discouraging to see people so unwilling to step back and consider. NL is arguing the most possible pro-consumer stance and is being thumb-downed by the portion of the audience who could call themselves nothing more than a base consumer.
Me watching this 6months later
THANK YOU
BURY ME BURY ME
The thing that I dislike about the game is that it feels like it was made for game journalists. What I mean by that is the game holds your hand every single step of the way. In combat, the companions tell you what you need to do, if you don’t figure out a puzzle in time, the companions tell you what to do, it’s the exact opposite of say Elden Ring. In ER you go where you want and it’s up to the player to find a way to solve things. In GoWR, 95% of the game is spoon fed to the player.
Legit this. While the story and everything is great, it was definitely game journalist-proofed. And it kind of hurt the game because of it. Inclusiveness ain't bad but it does get tedious.
yeah because elden ring was totally hated by game journalists and wasnt incredibly well received
God of War insists on itself...it insists on itself.
