Best 86 proof bourbon? I.W. Harper 15 yr review

- I.W. Harper 15yr has now become an allocated bourbon in Kentucky. Does this mean it is the best 86 proof ultra aged bourbon? Can an 86 proof bourbon be worth $100? If Basil Hayden 10yr is an example of what this is going to taste like it is not going to be a good night for us. Let's see if we wasted $100 or if I.W. Harper is worth the allocation and hype.

Thanks for the review. We tried this at the Stitzel-Weller distillery in KY earlier this year and thought it was good. Bought a bottle and then saw a few reviews. One comment nailed it - it smells like Gma's and Gpa's old musty basement...it's good and unique, but won't buy it alot. We bought a single barrel barrel proof Bulleit from the distillery that (cheaper) frankly, is much better. Anyway, you don't learn if you don't try. It's good but a little pricey for the 86 proof like you say. Lingering finish with oak and that mustiness for days. Cheers! Also - read the Pappyland book...it will give you better understanding of Stitzel Weller and where this came from. Good read!
Thanks for watching and Pappyland is on my list. I have heard great things about it.
Absolutely yes to Heather’s cocktail classes! 🙃
So what happened to this product? I can't find it anywhere anymore.
It’s allocated now and only released a few times a year.
@@PowerofBourbon what does "allocated" mean in this context, exactly? Is it in too high of demand to release regularly?
Yes, and that most liquor stores only will get a small number of bottles each year. A lot of bourbon is allocated so when a liquor store or distributor buys their stock they can not buy more until the next year. Bourbon demand has just gotten so crazy no one can keep up.
@@PowerofBourbon makes since but that sucks. Plus it's a 15 year so that by itself limits the availability. Explains why people are kinda hush hush when they find a bottle they love 😆
I wasn't crazy about the price but it was a very pleasant bottle
Thanks for the info. It always flew over my head when someone said "allocated"
I haven’t seen this around my area, but Tin Cup 10 year is a pretty good low proof whiskey. On a side note, I found the Booker’s 2022-02 lumberyard batch today.
Tin Cup 10 would be a great one to add too the lineup I did not think of that. We were able to get lumberyard at the distillery a week ago it is very tasty. We will get a review up soon.
Great review. Spending that kind of money I could see people wanting to justify the decision, but power of bourbon keeps it real!
We make poor life choices so you don’t have too.
Not sure I agree with the choice of Basil Hayden’s 10 Year over the Harper, even with the price difference. From what I remember, the Harper has the better nose. Neither has much of a finish. For something at 86 proof, I’d take the EW Single Barrel all day, everyday.
Perhaps Heather can mix some Manhattans using both a bourbon and a rye and utilizing different kinds of bitters.
I like the cocktail idea and we might have to do another under 90 proof flight to see what we can figure out. Another subscriber recommend Tin cup 10 which would be a lot of fun too.
Thank you David for being a voice of reason.
TJ is out of his mind per usual.
This is much preferred to Basil Hayden 10 year.
Show me a better 80 proof whiskey TJ….
It’s 91 proof so close enough… Widow Jane 10 year all day long.
My whiskey group blinded the IW Harper 15 against 3 others awhile back. The IW Harper took 3rd place. It was heavy on the oak. Can't remember what beat it, but I prefer Russell's Reserve 10 year and Eagle Rare, as lower proof, well aged bourbons. The prices are much better too. Thanks for the review. And yes, looking forward to 'Cocktail hour with Heather' in the near future!
High School teachers? I'll leave that alone.
