So they literally made a song about a Japanese urban legend and it’s so good but at the same time it’s CREEPY AS HELL. But Suzuka’s portrayal of Hanako is sad. It’s like Hanako is saying she’s just a scary urban legend and people forget she was a real person before. It is sad. Fantastic video. This is the video that made me of fan of them. It was this video where I discovered them. Wish these ladies all the best.
I'm a 40 year old guy from Chicago and I just recently came across Atarashii Gakko and I gotta say I'm absolutely hooked... it's weird, I almost feel like I'm not supposed to like it... like their music wasn't intended for me or something... but they are just so ridiculously creative and talented and energetic and spunky... their choreography is off the charts and they each just play their role so perfectly, and I just can't get enough! Their music is legitimately unique, and each song is highly varied in it's style... I mean, take Hanako for example, I can't recall ever hearing any song ever that sounds anything like it... and I listen to pretty much everything. In other words, don't judge a book by it's cover as I (wrongly) did... this is not just some generic pop act!

Mizyu voice really shines here, Suzuka voice highlights the bridge part, if AG have rapper it's Rin and of course Kanon's sweet & soft voice 👏👏👏👏👏👏
Was glad she had her lead vocal song this time. Usually it’s Suzuka who has the thunder in most of the songs they perform with. They truly are a well functioning team without overpowered egos.
I only can listen to Rap or Hip-hop if Rin sings. I love her short karaoke version of No Scrubs.
I agree, but I wish Rin would rap with a less nasal voice. Her voice has a pleasant thymbre when she sings normally, I'd rather she'd use that voice for her rap parts instead.

@@BigBrolls Rin usually is the most low key personality in the group. She dj’s independently. Usually Mizyu is the most popular among girls, perhaps she’s the cutest. Suzuka I liked the most since she seems to be the mother hen parentified minded of the group leader like the eldest sister. Her voice wasn’t as strong when she was in her pre teens but dominates now since it’s deep in the music icons similar to Annie Lennox, Grace Jones or Floor Jansen from Nightwish. Besides Kanon she is the quietest mystery of the group, a woman of little words opposed to Suzuka, the most antics, shenanigans and outspoken of the group . Kanon I think can pull off pranks as her signature personality and has a beautiful voice when speaking English. She has the second clearest beautiful voice in English of the group that is gentle and bold.
This is definitely one of the best AG songs. The instrumental is crazy, it gives Depeche Mode vibes.

The other songs I've heard of AG! are more overtly menacing musically, but the menace and creep factor in this one come from how the vocals deliberately go flat here and there and that really adds to the feeling of this song. I immediately knew what it was about, since I knew of the legend beforehand, and the singing and music really suits the story being told. I can see why AG! are becoming such a Thing now.

Oh my god I love this so so so much. In this song the girls leaned SO HARD into their strengths. Forgive me b/c I'm not great at describing this, but we've got Mizyu with the pure beautiful voice, Kanon with that powerful and sultry tone, Rin killing it with the rap (as always!), and then Suzuka coming in hard to break your heart with the infinite emotion in her voice. Incredible.

Pineapple Kryptonite was just a taste of what was to come with her gorgeous vocals with Kanon. That was only 2 minutes. This time she shined through without Suzuka as the lead vocalist. I am happy they varietize and rotate spots for their songs. Truly they are one mass of a team.
Suzuka always had a commanding powerful voice. When they were younger Suzuka had a kid voice with Saishuu Ginrui in the retail version. When she got older her voice is comparable to Grace Jones or Annie Lennox who have haunting deep near baritone voices. When I filmed them at Crunchyroll Expo, it was her greatest concert since she could pull off high raw emotion then smooth it off without having it off key.

Ok so I'm not seeing anyone complementing on Kanon's singing here, literally how, she's the one with the prettiest voice in Hanako, her singing is delightful
When i was an elementary school student, i scared of HANAKO. I had believed her existence and never used the third toilet. As we can see in this music video, rest rooms in Japanese schools were dark and narrow, which made me so scared. Past 10-20 years, many toilets of schools in big cities were rebuild, so i can’t see Japanese old style toilets now.
I work in a high school, but its toilets are clean, and rest rooms are bright enough. HANAKO may not appear again….
That kinda reminds me of my elementary school, it wasn’t in Japan but I was super scared of one of the bathrooms bc it was big (kinda built like a long hallway, it was also tucked away in a dark corner of the school) and it was dark and old. The school in general was pretty old and had many ghost stories surrounding it especially about that creepy bathroom. I was already super scared of Bloody Mary, the rumoured “green hand in the toilet” and I always thought I saw a little girl in the corner of my eye. Anyway I was reminded of it when reading your comment and im glad I didn’t know about Hanako-san of the toilet back then lol I was such a scaredy cat!

I love that this is Japanese schoolgirl Thriller, down to the twist at the end of the singer turning to the camera and revealing they are actually a monster.

this song can honestly be a really good metaphor for flashbacks of someone abusive in your life that you've grown attached to..
The lyrics itself talk about fear, telling someone to come back and ‘play’, asking if their still there. the person finds comfort in their abuser but is also afraid of them. The childlike tone of the song could hint at it being childhood abuse.
Rin’s whole part sounds like an abuser talking to their victim. Suzuka’s part sounds like the victim comforting themself and realizing it’s unhealthy. Mizyu’s part is the victim living their unhealthy ways, and kanon’s part sounds like the victim recalling their abusers words, or mocking their abuser
Maybe I’m reaching, but seriously, this song could definitely have a darker meaning if you look at it differently.
tl;dr, song could possibly be about childhood trauma and unhealthy coping :)
