I've found alocasias to be the easiest to transfer to pon out of all of my other genuses I grow. I've also found that rot happens more if you don't spread the rootball out within the substrate when potting it up. So if it's got some well developed roots I try to spread them as best I cant while potting deeper than what I would initially expected then pull up on the plant a centimeter or two to get those roots to stretch out and then backfill with more of the substrate.
Enjoy living thur you in the plant era. Plants look great, I rub milk on my Orchid leaves for water spots to make them shine. We call those mad minutes when our Olivia-Michael goes crazy running around. But she's not running towards anyone. 😅 take care
@plantsbymelissa I was dying lmao watching the kitties do zoomies 😂 thanks for the good laugh and great video!! I actually just added the splendid I purchased from you onto a pole, I'm super excited to watch it grow and get bigger!
Love the video, can't wait for another. Sure there has to be a reason i wonder why you don't put the little sad ones in stratum. Maybe to moist? Very curious to the result of these. Oooo you are so spontanious like that so much. Makes me looking forward to that another video aswell 😜. Take care Melissa 🥰
31:43 so beautiful 😍 thank you for showing how you do a moss pole from start to finish. I just made my first moss pole and it was soo hard! You need ten hands to hold the pole, plant, and scooper. And your new sign is amazing 🌱
Catching up with the last few videos,, Loved all the new pots, macrame, Planting tours, the IKEA green house /stand,the sign is perfect ‼️✨and the repotted plants from this video are so beautiful....👌 💚🌿🍀🌵💚
Carnivorous plants don’t need humidity they enjoy it, but it’s not required. You can always hand feed them too if you are worried. pings don’t have a limit of flies like fly traps do before they have a cow 😂🤣
I love how long your videos are! I don't remember how long they used to be. ALSO *you have doubled in subscribers since I started watching you* !!! So happy for you! Well deserved 🎉🎉🎉
They are all beautiful 😍. The smallest one I would put in your cabinet, the fing one. I'm not sure if I got the name right. Because it needs high humidity, plus it loves warm place. Good job they are definitely looking so good. 👌 👍❤️
The gigas is stunning!!! Love the velvet leaves paired with the pink planter perfectly. I didn’t know about the lemon juice for the leaves wow I’m gonna try that this weekend Enjoyed your video (Can you link the square nursery planters , so need them)
Make sure those pings are getting plenty of light! Mine are thriving in direct morning to midday sun. They're pretty easy as long as there's always water on the bottom and get that light going. No need for high ambient humidity since you have the continuous bottom water.
High light is a must for pings along with distilled water and you can use peat moss but not from miracle grow because it is fertilized. Your sign looks beautiful.
Very enjoyable Melissa! I have a Bisma that I received 12 months ago. It grew GREAT and I decided to put in pon. Not really bad, but throwing a major fit! Two growths with 2 ea leaves. I have my fingers crossed that in spring Mr Bisma will amaze me!
oh no! I hope it will grow more here come spring! It makes me nervous a little since I don't have any corms but hoping it won't throw too much of a fit for me 🙏
Hi there!! I just ordered a few things on Amazon from your link! I am planning to repot a few alocasias I have into pon with the black and white pots you have. One is a frydek that’s on the struggle bus but gives me huge leaves when she does- but will only keep 2-3 leaves at a time- the other is a very thriving regal shield, a Thai con monstera and my favorite plant, which I know you don’t love, but my adansonii albo. They are all in soil now, should I put them in water for a few weeks before transferring? Thoughts/ ideas? Thanks so much! I LOVE your content!! Also just found a dang thrips AND spider mites two days ago, I’ve never had pests before and I’m so sad- but we are recovering!
Melissa, personally I don’t think you will have issues with Bisma, the only thing I found with mine in the last 1.5 years is that it didn’t like as much light as other alocasias. Also its leaves are much thicker and it doesn’t require as much water. But this of course in my environment and my low humidity ( 40%) with your expertise you should do fine ❤️Thanks for all the great content!
Hi Melissa, I love this video. I didn’t know about the lemon cleaning the leaves. Everything looks amazing.❤ would you be able to share your mix for aroid plants . Or the mix that’s in the container.? I remember you saying you don’t like coco coir or bark? I can’t remember.. ThankYou. For sharing..❤
It's funny you bring up about the root plugs because my last three alocasia have not had any which I've been very surprised. But then my last two were from Urban jungle my last one was from Costa. Maybe they're all finally listening.
The Platinum Alocasia was the most carefree easy going alocasia I ever grew. I grew it in semi-hydro leca. I neglected it, I forgot to water it, it didn't get premiere lighting, and it was so drama free I sometimes I forgot I had it. It never dropped a leaf. Never had crispy edges. And it grew a leaf so big I thought it was secretly a spacecraft and it was going to fly away.
Hi Melissa- just wanted to let you know to look at the ingredients of your TPS. Mine came mixed with sugar and it brought SO MANY ants into my room! They were having a party in my planters and I had to take them outside last summer. I switched to Great White after checking to see their ingredients did not list sugar.
NOOO haha I didn't think of that!! I dealt with an ant infestation last summer. I just looked and it says 98% cane sugar 🫠 I'll have to keep a close eye then and be careful where I use it. I'll look up Great White! I appreciate it!
I too have been finding great success just rinsing the roots off really good throwing it in water The ones that want to die will and it will already be producing new water roots before all the other ones die and I've been having super great success not losing any leaves and then going to pon. I'm just so excited cuz I could never keep an alocasia alive until I started using pawn
I had a bisma starter plant from the spring last year, and it grew another corm and sprouted next to the og one, but when I separated them almost a month ago, they both ended up dying 😭😭 I'm actually so sad about it. I order my plants online, so I might try to track down another larger one this time
@@plantsbymelissa I was so upset once I realized they were going downhill, but I couldn't stop it 😥 I'll definitely be looking to spent a little bit more money for a plant that's closer to the size that you have! Likely (hopefully) less sensitive than a juvenile starter plant 😬 it had grown quite a bit since I got it too, so I was really sad when it first happened, but lesson learned at least! 🫠😅
Just wondering if you could show the name on the bottle, of fertilizer you added? I'm always curious to know the different fertilizers. Thanks so much, always interesting to watch.

Thank you!! I hope it makes a comeback! it looks the same since filming this so I guess that's a good thing haha. I ended up putting it in my cabinet for right now.
I didn’t think I would like the 3.0 but after using another brand (Amazon was out of thiccly poles)that leaks water out the back when I water it. But I think I’ve changed my mind for future endeavors
I hope the ping gets better soon. Thanks so much for the video. I always learn something new from your channel. Appreciate you😊 btw your hair looks pretty curled, or wavy... either way it looks nice👍🙋
I was curious if you have ever used the Rousseau moss poles. They are super awesome, my Pothos and monstera love them. They are a bit more user friendly and affordable.
I haven't tired them but being on the creator side I tend to stay away from small business and companies now that offer affiliate links for commission. No offense to Tyler - it's just inauthentic to me to push products that way. Everyone seems to only pushes the Rousseau ones now because they get $$. Gray from thiccly is a super nice guy and I buy his poles off amazon to support his company. He was the first one I know that came out with the clear poles and now there's so many knock offs out there.
I'm curious why you go from soil to water to pon instead of soil to pon? Wouldn't it be an easier transition for the roots to go from soil to pon? It's my understanding that soil roots tend to rot in water, and water roots dry out in anything but water.
Did you keep the Anthurium in the soil plug until you transferred it to water? I order from Green Escape very often and I usually just trial and error with my potting lol. I usually repot them right away and remove the plug and so far it’s been okay but I want to learn safer ways to care for my plants upon receiving them.
I put it in water right after the unboxing! the rootball was so small and it didn't have a plug or a pot just some soil wrapped around it and most of it came off after I pulled it away. I could have potted it up right away into a pot with more soil but I am loving semi hydro for anthuriums!
Pon question. Since the roots haven't gotten down into the reservoir yet, aren't you supposed to treat it like soil and top water for a few weeks, and then after they grow down into the reservoir you fill it with water? Or am I doing it wrong hahah
No, I think that is how you're supposed to do it! I keep a little water because I'm worried it will dry out too fast lol. So far everything has worked out minus the one alocasia I transferred from soil. It rotted really fast.
Melissa, these new plants are beautiful, but the real star is your nail polish 🤣🤣 I NEED it lol I always think it’s so pretty when you have it on! What’s it called?
Thank you so much! I did them myself! It's the Ulta beauty polish line (red carpet manicure) It's called "Envy of the town" You may be able to get it at sally beauty as well 🥰
I've shown them on insta several times - I'm pretty active in my stories over there! Sometimes it's hard for me to remember where I showed certain plants lol. I'm going to be filming another plant update next month so I will show them again!
Omg! you have a munybn thermal printer! Please could you do a video on how you set your sizes for the papers! I cannot for the life of me figure it out. Iv tried everything. The app, looked on redit posts and they never fit to 4x6 papaer sheets it comes with. *cried*

Did you know that you can make your own DIY PON! Equal parts each of lava rock, zeolite, and pumice. Make sure the particles are all the same size. Much cheaper if you can buy larger amounts.
Yes! I have some lava rock, zeolites and pumice on my amazon for DIY pon - I haven't made it DIY though because after doing some research - some argue that it's not really cheaper and just to buy Lechuza. Lechuza claims their pon has the ideal water to air ratio for plants. I'm not sure what the amounts are of each component but I believe there's less zeolite.
I'd suggest anyone in a colder climate to order when it gets warmer. They packed them for cold weather shipping but my plants experienced cold damage a day after they arrived. They refunded me so big props to them but just a warning, and if you do order the winter shipping insurance with it! Great company, but the plants are small so they're more susceptible to cold damage. :)
Cats are so sweet and adorable. I love watching them play.❤❤❤ The sign is amazing thanks for letting us know where to get one and the starting price.
I was horrified when I found a plastic thing around a root ball! Such pretty plants, Melissa. I love that alocasia. 💚✨🌿

For sure, it's definitely smart to wait if your weather isn't ideal right now :)
@plantsbymelissa Since they offered the insurance I decided to take a chance, it didn't pay off too well. 😅
Since the pole opens in the front why not put the plant on the pole before potting it in the soil
There's no wrong way! I always do is this way and it works for me :)
@@plantsbymelissa that’s great because you have just marvelous poles!
