    Thank you for showing how the bigger catches on the bottom. My husband and I have argued about how the chute connects as he has been using the wrong holes and the bigger has fallen off or gotten plugged.
    We do do put bags in the cloth bags but overhang them a bit and wrap around the hinge a bit. We have a large yard and we used to fight a garbage can like your blue one till we both lost it!
    Yard work can be rewarding but sometimes you have to wonder if someone enjoys making it hard for the entertainment value for your neighbors.

    Just big thanks for the video, and up close shots; I inherited a L-118 w the bagger attachments all over the place -and you showed me how they all went together, so hat's off !!! (I'd make a 3-4' composting box to skip the direct bagging, load will compress/breakdown over time of course, use it to fill low spots, or fill a bed to take to dump natural waste section) Cheers !!!!

    I agree with the 'compost your clippings' crowd. I started composting about 30 years ago, and grass clippings are like raw gold!
    I have a tumbler for my compost now, and it really helps compost everything down to a rich soil-like material.
    I'm going to have to figure out how much I can lift @ a time into the tumbler.

    Hi Asa, Thanks for the tip and for watching. I apologize for the delay in responding but today is the first day that I have used the bagger in a while. I was going to try the bungee, but instead I let the seal of the top of the hopper keep the bag in place and it actually worked very well. That said, I only put a trash bag in one of the collector bags and it filled about half way so it was very easy to get out. I am interested to see how well it comes out when it is completely full and bulging! This was the very first attempt at using the trash bag, so thank you for your inspiration!!! JL

    The right bag on ours usually only fills halfway like yours. My dad insists that I should undo the bungie part of the two tubes on the side and remove the tubing part from the hole on the bag lid every time I empty the bags but I don't see why. Also, I need to get a big round can like you have. Would make life much easier.

    The old grass catchers roughly same size and design as yours use to have 2 windows, one on top and a second directly behind the seat. That stopped with 2003 models, but the windows get dirty and are then useless. The X-Series 7 bushel bagger has a red indicator on the chute for air flow if it plugs up, no windows on hopper, so just feel the bags from the seat if they are full on both types.

    Hey friend! We obviously had many similar duties and experiences. I bought my Craftsman 17 horse 3 solid bin "bagger" in 2003, ran like a swiss watch for 16 years. Two months ago I turned the starter switch and POW, gigunda explosion. We bought a JD, close to 3k , and have found the solid bin head and circle over the JD bags. My bins are 16 years old and would have been serviceable til my death. And 3, not 2. $400 clams a ripoff, slower----pfui. Sears wanted 4 to 5 skins to repair the Craftsman, so I settled for the $100 dollar diagnosis fee and tried to peddle the CN, No nibbles whatsoever so it looks like el junkoman soon enough. The JD is a joy to use but the 25 new horses eat about 3 times the gas of the one cylender Bs engine of the CM. After I saw your vid. I wondered if you have ever seen what I had: the green plastic inverted loader I bought at the hdwre store at about 38 $, Worth its weight in gold. I took the full bin from the CM and quick dumped it into the green plastic receiver(quick and no crapola all over the ground.) When full you pull the ties of the 39 gallon black plastic bag placed ahead in the green plastic receiver. Quicko!! The I rolled the 25 to 30 bags along the side of the driveway all the way out to the road. No spoiled lawn. No damage to driveway. Took 6 or 8 bags to our disposal site(20 minutes) in our crv. About 8 hours of labor for the whole job. Now with the new JD we'll see this year. I will say 25 horses is a big difference. Snarky Four Seven.

    To know if it's working, just reach one hand back and feel if air is coming out at the corner. You won't feel a lot of air because of the mesh bags. but if you feel a little bit of airflow leaking, it's working.

    • @lendermanshop
      @lendermanshop  4 года назад +1

      I've also notice that I can just look at the bag directly under the chute itself. If is puffed and I see a little debris coming out the top grated vent I know it's working....if not, it's either clogged or full. Thanks for watching! JL

    For everyone wondering why he doesn’t compost it’s a lot more work than it seems.
    I do my own composting. I have about an acre. Usually have about 3-4 piles going at one time. When it’s time to stir those piles it can be a huge shore. I only stir about once every 3 months which slows down the decomposing but I’m just one man and it’s surprising how much you can get in one single mowing.
    When my piles get a little too big for me to handle I mulch the grass until I free up the room

    What I do for bagging is before I attempt to cut the lawn is I put the plastic bags in the bag prior to cutting. Once the bagger is full I then open the lid and push the grass clippings down. Then pull on the plastic bag tie strings and close the bag. Once both bags are tied I then lift the bagger off the rider and flip it upside down and shake the full plastic bag out of the bagger. Now you have a bag full of clippings and no mess. You then install another plastic bag for the next cut. Less mess:-)

    Dude, you hit the nail on the head when you said those holes for the hooks would be the first place you would scratch your tractor. I got my tractor (120) two days ago and a few hours ago I went out and put on the grass bag catcher. The shorter side does not want to stay in for some reason and I have to keep pushing it down. Any suggestions?

    • @lendermanshop
      @lendermanshop  4 года назад

      Hi Midwest, sorry to hear you are having issues with the mount. My immediate thought is to be sure you have your lock pin in but I am sure you have already seen to that. After that, my thought is a bungee cord looped over that shorter arm and then down to the hitch mount hole. I would not be happy doing this myself on a new machine but you don't want that arm to un-knowingly come out and then make the entire assembly torque while going over bumps, etc. I hope you get this worked out, thanks for watching, JL.

      TheElinora1 sorry to hear you are having such problems. Is the grass very high and wet?? When I have that much grass I will cut without bagging first and then go back over the yard with the bagger on. It takes a little bit longer but the result is usually less grass in the bags(leaving some grass clippings on the yard is good anyway) and less clogging because it will be a bit dryer. I also cut the grass weekly. I hope that helps, JL.

    • @lendermanshop
      @lendermanshop  9 лет назад

      Hi Jack, Unfortunately I do not find that these blades mulch that well unless I use the much cover that I recently purchased. That being said, this past fall, I mulched the leaves first and then went over again collecting them in the bagger. That seemed to work pretty well. I know it sounds like twice the amount of time, but the mulching part can go pretty quickly. Otherwise, since the bags are on the smaller side they will fill up very fast. Thanks for watching, JL.

    I would get some clogging when the grass was damp, the high lift blades took care of that, not a single clog with the high lift blades. I wish there was some way to shut off the bagger, I wanted to bag the front yard for neatness, I could care less about the back yard, I have a HUGE back yard and it has to be emptied 3-4 times just for the back yard. I tried leaving off the collector bags, but that covered me and the back of the mower in clippings, if you take off the tubing that runs between the deck and the bins, the bins flop around a lot and bent some of the hardware. I used it for about 3 years but as my back got worse I couldn't lift the filled collection bags anymore and had to remove the entire system. I really like the look of not having clippings, but when you get old things change! LOL

    Thanks for the review(s)! I'm wondering about what your system is in the Fall for collecting leaves. You mentioned that you mulch first, then bag...does that mean that you take off the entire bagging unit, install the mulching guard, mow, then put on the entire bagging unit again? I've got an enormous about of leaves to take care of, and your system sounds like a good one, I'm just wondering if you've got a shortcut in terms of not having to take the entire bagging unit on and off--that seems like quite a hassle. Also, you mentioned in one of the comments that you were going to try the hi-lift blades. How did those work for the leaves in the Fall? Thanks again!

    • @lendermanshop
      @lendermanshop  8 лет назад

      Hi Znamenny, Thanks for watching. I actually leave the entire unit on my tractor all of the time, except for the chute. I take the chute off for the initial cut or leaf mulch and then put the chute on for leaf/clipping pick up. I have a mulch kit review here ruclips.net/video/wbc0a_i1j1k/видео.html
      and a follow up bagger review here ruclips.net/video/yIPOHAafIGU/видео.html. I actually ordered both mulching and high lift blades. I like the high lift as they get more of the small seeds and other debris off the ground. They work so well that sometimes even the moss and dirt comes up. I ordered the JD high lift blades. Hope that helps, have a great day, Joel.

    • @znamenny8790
      @znamenny8790 8 лет назад

      That does help, thank you. When you do your first pass to mulch the leaves, do you put the mulching guard on, or just let the leaves shoot out the side? I'm just wondering if the high lift blades will cut the leaves into small enough peaces to decrease number of bags. Thanks again.

    How's the wear and tear on the chute? I looked at some today, and the chute just feels incredibly cheap and flimsy. Also, how effective is that bagging setup when compared with a mower with a power blower?

    • @lendermanshop
      @lendermanshop  10 лет назад

      Hi Matt, The chute seems to be as sturdy as the Craftsman one I had before, though I see some signs of drying on the rubber strap that connects the top and bottom pieces. I have not used a power blower before so I cannot really comment. I will say that it does a decent job of picking up the leaves and clippings and unless you have over two acres of leaves or landscape for others, the blower attachment may be a bit overkill. Thanks for watching, JL.

    I had the same Craftsman for 15 years and the 3 bin bagger was much superior, held more and the contents slid out easily. The John Deere bagger bulges with the grass and doesn't come out easily and the window is pretty useless when trying to check fullness. Also there is a lot of blow by out the front right side I never had with the craftsman. Maybe a different blade would work better. I have the 125 and height setting handle catches you every time you dismount the tractor. The craftsman briggs and stratton motor died but I have often wished I would just have had it repaired. +Ben E Hi Ben, Thanks for the note. I agree the blow out on the front right is quite remarkable. I just ordered mulching blades yesterday as some reviewers stated they worked well with the bagger. I also am considering some sort of home made damn for that side of the deck. We'll see how it goes!! JL

      +Joel Lenderman I tried a plastic blocker but it didn't work very well. The only thing I have found that works for leaves is to keep mowing clockwise and blowing the leaves to the center. and the best way to tell when the bagger is full is to reach back and feel the bag on the right side.

    The problem I've run into is that the bagger seems to lose suction and won't pick up. As far as I can see i've installed it properly and the first few times I cut grass this season it worked fine. Then, the grass started to clog up in the lower tube. I take the tubing apart, clear the clog, reassemble the tubes and, sometimes the bagger picks up and sometimes the tube clogs. Anyone else have this problem and, more importantly, know why it happens and how to fix it? Thanks.

    Why not just compost the clippings. I have a conner of my yard behind trees where I dump the grease and spread it out a bit. It decomposes fast and less hassle. Just dump the new clippings over the old. I've been doing that for 15 years and the pile does not grow.

    • @lendermanshop

      Hi marcducati, Thanks for the suggestion. I was able to do that when we lived in a different house years ago and I miss the option. I find the less I let leaves, grass, branches, etc., accumulate, the easier it is to control the bamboo. Thanks for watching, JL.

    Try buying bigger plastic garbage bags and inserting them into your bagger bags and put a rubber strap around the tops to hold the plastic bags in place. Then you can just remove the plastic bags with the grass contents already in the plastic bags.

I was forever stopping the machine take ing the the whole lower chute parts apart and digging all the packed crap down down to the blades out to clear things, then reverse the process to get started again. The biggest time saver was my "Lawn Funnel" made by Young mfg. co. of St'Louis. TIME SAVER and it looks no older than when I bought it years ago.(Mebbe 25) I would stuff the cut leaves into it with a toy plastic baseball bat and get a good 3 bags of leaves into a 39 gal bag with draw strings. And no worries about rain either. Good Luck. Snarky Four Seven.

      The soft grass collector bags on tractor need to breath during operation. The plastic is an idea but on most machines you are going to get an unwanted blowback from the yard clippings and fine dirt. I have a lawn business and have been doing lawns for over 73 years. Besides when filling the soft bags you can reach back and feel how full the bags are. Having to plastic bag clippings has to do with how you need to dispose of clippings. Most cases I use mulching blades and chew the grass fine enough to be left on the lawn as food.

    • @lendermanshop
      @lendermanshop  4 года назад

      Hi Matt, the plastic is for large quantities of grass clippings only and goes directly into the regular trash. All other yard waste is collected on separate days. I have no idea why grass clippings are not to be included in the yard waste. I check our township webpage regularly to be sure I am following the guidelines. We have started composting this summer so that will help cut down on the grass. I usually don't bag my clippings except for in the spring when the grass is growing out of control. Thanks for watching, JL.

  • @G56AG
    @G56AG 6 лет назад

    Pretty good review overall, but you have way too much drama emptying the bags. The obvious problem is your bags are too big for your trash can, that's why the bag falls into the can. The bag should fit tightly over the mouth of the can, you should have to stretch it slightly to fit the can, then the bag won't fall into the can. Then you remove the liner from the can, than compact the clippings and then struggle to empty the bag the rest of the way. Compact the clippings inside the can then you can dump the rest of the bag into the can, I've been doing it that way for several years. Drill a few holes in the can to let air out as you fill the liner and also to break the vacuum when you go to remove the liner from the can. It also helps to tie the top of the bag then turn the can on its side, makes it a lot easier to break the vacuum and just slide the bag out.
