Yes!!! The wet cat food was what started the whole nightmare. They migrated to his litter tray because I used pellet litter.
I switched to dry food and clumping litter and it calmed down for a day. The next day I noticed a lot more fruit flies hanging out in my apartment. There was a piece of breaded chicken stuck in the crack of the oven and, I kid not, thousands of fruit fly larvae and live flies had infested my oven.
I turned that oven on and fried them all to death. Man those things are persistent.

The wine does make a difference. I left these out for 2 hours with no bait and I only caught 1. After putting some cooking sherry in the bottom trays I had about a dozen stuck on each one (I used 4 ) in 10 minutes. This is really good advice!

I’ve been obsessed! I finally got rid of them, but I will definitely purchase one of these traps. I don’t want to ever see a gnat in my house.
    *Other Tips:*
Find the source: In some cases, try to see where they are populated. Follow the odors. Throughly clean out areas where you keep fruits and vegetables. A lot of people discover that it’s from a sack if potatoes. Determine if they are coming from your indoor and outdoor trash cans.
    *Refrigerate*
If possible, refrigerate fresh fruit and vegetables. Do this until you alleviate the problem.
    *Plants*
Do not overwater your plants. If you can’t find the source, place house plants outside.
*Burn Incense* In small areas. After getting rid of the gnats, carefully burn incense. The can’t stand smoke.
*Clean Your Drains* Close the drain openings to determine if the gnats go away. If you have drain flies, use a product like liquid plumber or vinegar and baking soda, wait 10-20 minutes . Rinse with hot water. Other use borax or bleach. Do the above 2-3 times.
*Clean* clean cabinets, drawers, trash cans, counters, tables, corners, and cabinets. Clean near damp areas like the sink & washing machine.I use bleach, others claim that lemon or vanilla scented cleaners repel gnats.
*Get Rid of Boxes and Paper Bags* They are nice to have a few, but they love dark and damp areas.

This is great news. Thanks for the tip. I also found out that some of them are not fruit flies. They're fungus fli es that comes from watering plants. They lay eggs in the dark moist dirt. I looked on RUclips & found that if u put a layer of fish tank gravel on the top soil, they cannot penetrate the gravel & die. It worked. No more fungus gnats. Went to Walmart & purchased a bag of black gravel for about 5.00. These 2 ideas work.

NAIL ON THA HEAS SIS!..... I did this 2 days ago after watching your video.
I had gone out of town for a few days came back I had a swarm of those jokers flying around. I bought 6 raid foggers and bombed my apartment with them. They killed a lot of them but not enough.
I knew about the apple cider vinegar but nit this. I had some distilled vinegar but no channel suggested it's use. So instead of doing apple cider vinegar I did this just like you said. I put one in every room a 2 in the kitchen. And GIRL, This right here! Worked better than apple cider vinegar could ever have. In fact most were gone within an hour and believe me after fogging I still had a lot of them. 2 days, NONE! NONE!NONE!

My husband and I were experiencing the same problem. We had a few gnats flying around because I bought some plants for my home and was overwatering them. I bought some stuff that was supposed to killed the larvae and got some sticky tape. That worked some but they were still flying around. And one day it was from 5 to 100. They were flying around like crazy! We have gotten them before but not like this. I woke up Saturday morning and came across this video and determined that I was going to run out when The Home Depot opened to get the Raid Fly Stick Trap. I got some and put them in the kitchen and it was crazy how many gnats stuck to the traps by later that evening. And today it is even better. Thanks so much for this. My husband had picked up some bombs to put around the house but we were keeping our daughter's cat and we have a dog. What are we going to do with them. Well, problem solved. Praise the Most High and thank you for the tip!

Having this problem too and tried everything. The workers at Home Depot told me that the reason why fruit flies multiply so fast is because they lay eggs in your drains ( garbage disposals, sink & shower)! They are drawn to the smell of decaying food in the garbage disposals and sink "sludge", especially in the bathrooms. To keep them down you have to keep your drains clean (either Draino or boiling hot white vinegar/baking soda-which kills the flies and eggs in your drains). They also told me don't keep any food stuffs out in the open, especially potatoes, fruits etc. Girl, they told me ALOT of tips! It really helped but I will look into this tip of yours as well even though we didn't have as many as you did. Glad that you are back in your kitchen!

THANK YOU for posting this.... seriously. We've have a horrible fruit fly problem at our kitchen sink for about a week now and it's been awful! I haven't been able to get rid of those little suckers. I have tried red wine in a glass; apple cider vinegar (with/without syran wrap with punctured holes); Borax down the drain followed by boiling water; juice in a jar with a paper funnel; those little plastic red tomato looking things; boiling water down the drain; vinegar + baking soda down the drain; sanitizing EVERYTHING around sink. NOTHING has worked until I saw your video. I just went out to Home Depot a couple hours ago and bought 6 of these Raid Fly Sticks and I'm completely mesmerized watching each and every one of those damn flies sticking to that stick. It's a beautiful thing. I poured myself a glass of wine and watching with great satisfaction as each one of those tyrants fly into their ultimate demise. GREAT POST. Every 8 days the eggs hatch 1 female can lay 40 eggs evey 12 hours if found in the drain citronella soap will kill any fly and egg it comes in contact with. It also is good repellent if its Phorid Flies
Though the look similar the way to tell is the eyes and the legs in the back fruit flys only have red eyes like almost orange the other ones have black some times even dark red but not bright red they also have a slight hump to thier back bleach and hot water wont even kill them but the lay eggs in organic matter you have to kill the nest with a bio cleaner that dissolves organic matterial but the phorid usually are indicaters that the sewage has a break in it somewhere. They will follow the smallest cracks to the effected soil or gravel and start the nest in there.

The best thing I have used is the sticky fly paper that you hang like a ribbon. It is sold in little rolls and you hang up and unfurl like a ribbon. Very inexpensive - dollar stores have it. Very effective and even more so when the flies get stuck, as their friends then come looking for them and get stuck too! You will catch many more than you think you have! Of course you can hang more than one and discard them when they are covered (replace if necessary).

I added wine, apple cider vinegar and dish detergent to a few jars and it killed a lot, but they were still very active. This has been a 2 week battle so far. I saw your video yesterday and of all places, Food Lion had the fly sticks for $3+, but at this point, I would've paid $10 per stick. I bought about 4 last night. I set them up with my red wine and acv mix and in less than an hour, the fruit flies were all over it. Within a few hours there were hundreds. I wish i could post the pic. Thanks again!!!

So I bought these traps before and didn't work as well and I put beer inside the plastic tray. I tried the apple cider vinegar in the jar and only populated them even more. I found out the problem was a moldy avocado that was hidden under some lemons my roommate covered. I put a trap by my trash can and one hanging next to my fruit basket and within 30 minutes I caught over 50. I put acv in both trays. Over night I caught over 300 gnats. And there's maybe only a dozen flying around now! Thank you so much!

Amazing results! At first it didn't work, I put honey in one stick and maple syrup in the other, since those were the suggestions on the box. They didn't seem to care though, so I poured some apple cider vinegar into it over top of the other stuff and BAM, overnight they were all stuck! Thank you so much!!! I tried the cider vinegar and it didn't work. I found you when I saw that wasn't working. I went straight to Walmart and bought two of the Raid Fly Sticks. I used honey in the bottom. They worked immediately! I woke up this morning and one was covered with fruit flies and the other one was one third covered. Thank you so much for making this video for us!

No, the dish washing liquid serves to break the surface tension of the apple cider vinegar so the light weight flies fall through the surface of the liquid and drown in the vinegar. Drowning is what kills the fruit flies, not the soap.

  • @INJURYCOMP

Thank you for the video. Two other things, these flies are also attracted to the light when it is dark outside. So...I have found that setting a trap in a bathroom, at night, with that light on (and no other light on in the house) draws most of the flies in the house to that light source and therefore a great opportunity for them to be attracted to your trap. Yes, their eggs are already on the fruit we buy▬so that fruit needs to be washed and dried when we get it home.

We usually get them every other year, but this year is ridiculous. While we go out to get the actual sticks, we wrapped a fly tape that we have around a paper towel roll and placed it in a saucer of red wine to see what will happen while we are gone. Thanks again as these things have been driving me insane!

run boiling water through the drains first then pour comet and soap down the drain, then put a cup or something to block the drain. kill the flies in the house with traps or slap boxing lol, the lifecycle is 72 hours I believe for the flies. this is what helped me today! almost immediate results.

I cleaned everything in my kitchen and put all fruit in the fridge. I made 5 fruit fly vinegar/soap traps. It took two days, but they finally were hungry enough that they went for the traps. They are getting fuller each night. Put multiple vinegar traps in each room when you have an infestation. Oh, and they also are drawn to whiskey. I put whiskey in one just to try that and that works, too.

Thanks for the idea. I have a really really bad infestation...they're in every room in my apartment. I had success with the small traps before when I had just a few, but like you said, when there are THIS MANY, they just get food from it and breed more. I bet you also could use beer because the fruit flies flock to beer cans.

Awhile back when I had a fruit fly attack I tried pouring boiling water down the drain of the sink three or four times a day.. (about half a gallon for each drain) it didn't get rid of them immediately.. though, after three days they were gone.. I think they feed or breed in the drain pipe..

I used this formula, recommended by an exterminator, to treat my drains....1/2 cup salt, plus 1/2 cup baking SODA, dumped down the drain. Add 1 cup vinegar (it will bubble up). Immediately cover drains and allow to sit overnight. In the morning, flush with boiling water. It took about 2 weeks but it worked. Not all gnats are fruit flies. Some are fungus gnats and some are drain gnats, so check out and treat your houseplants too. Good luck!

Yeah you rite. Same here. Vinegar/soap/trap did not work. The fly paper spiral thing worked to catch a lot but not all of them.
