i'm surprised how good you can make the nasir ali one sound!
The intonation is definitely way better on the compensating ones. I don’t even know how you made the first one sound to good, it just goes to show that the the player is the most important peice of the puzzle.
To my ears the JP274S and the Jupiter XO were very close, although the Jupiter XO sounded a little more "open" but still with a good "core". So, I would say the JP274S is the most bang for the buck with the caveat that it depends on how the playing characteristics compare - not just the tone. I expect you would have a beautiful tone on a garden hose. Would sure like to hear you play my circa 1977 Besson compensation euphonium.
Unless you’re as good as Matonizz the difference in the Sterling and the XO is about $4K. The XO was better, but not 200% better.
I noticed they sounded very similar on the staff but when the jupiter xo went above the tone sounded just as clear as on the staff where the jp274s sounded a little stuffier just a small difference i noticed he made them all sound amazing though props to you sir you are a very talented musician
Its like... Get the latest Flagship Samsung phone or the 2020 Flagship phone. lol
I could hear a clear difference in tone between each of the first three euphs, but not too much of a difference between euph 3 and euph 4, atleast not 4000 dollars of difference.
Hi friends! Hope everyone had a great Easter. Here's a little comparison of two non compensating euphs and two compensating euphs. Let me know which one you think is the best band for your buck. Links to all instruments in the description box. See you all on Wednesday for live session of Holst Second Suite in F. Stay well peeps!
Will there be a pdf of the scores?
Yes, it's already available for download at patreon.com/matonizz
You should do a giveaway!! That would be amazing!! BTW you are an amazing musician and I watch your videos daily!
@@madisonkroes9936 That's in the working :) Hopefully will be able to set up regular giveaways soon, keep an eye for it ;)
I really wanted your videos to focus on dubbing for Portuguese, because I'm Brazilian and I really like your videos but I don't know how to speak English 😓😓
Stares at the Cimbasso the entire time...
The cheapest one had some serious intonation issues. I'm normally not a fan of expensive instruments, but I gotta admit, that 7
$7000 beast was clear, intonated and beautiful!
Nice comparison. I would love to see a similar comparison with some notes in the lower register for the fullness aspect of the overall sound. Also, just want to say, you do a wonderful job of bringing attention to a beautiful and often ignored and not widely recognized instrument. And you seem to have a teacher's heart. Kudos and thanks.
I can't really judge when you make them all sound so good. Straight up, my sister had no idea you were even changing instruments throughout the video
I'd like to listen euphonium sound soo much, but in my opinion the Jupiter XO is much better sound the the others. The white one sounds much different than the others but on this price it's sill great, couse the player is awesome :DD . Be good
lol they all sound the same to me
I 100% agree, it's not "that" close tbh. I wouln't buy it though as it's a waste for a begginer probably, but I wasn't even watching the video(just hearing on the side) and when I heard it I was like oh boy the difference! Which one is this? It's just so much more vibrant!
After a life time of playing mainly Conn or Yamaha baritones and trombones, I now playing my first Nasir Ali euphonium. It's a dream horn! Each day I play a noon-time concert, and the horn performs magnificently.
I absolutely LOVE how the XO plays! A local music store is loaning one to me right now and I'm hoping to be able to buy it from them. The tone quality feels so much more open and resonant and it's so nice to play more in tune than I could on my old student model horn. Also just feels great to play in general!
You can make every single one of those sound so good!
The most interesting thing to me between the Nasir Ali and the Gemeinhardt is the difference in slotting tendencies. The Nasir Ali rides high on the slot, and the Gemeinhardt has a tendency to really sag on the pitch, making it less favorable in my opinion to listen to, and yet to the untrained ear, the drooping pitch can sound darker and more euphonium-like. Still, as the proud owner of a JP-274, in my opinion, it wins the value contest, from the perspective of how much bang you get for your buck!
First of all, you are an excellent player and a great ambassador for the euphonium community, many thanks for that! Personally I prefer the warmer and darker sound of the compensated euphonium's you have tested, but I always loved playing on my own non-compensated Besson 765 International (yes, it takes some "lip compensation" here and there...). But to make a full comparison, would it also be possible to compare these instruments in the low range? Thanks!!
Honestly, you make very good content. I remember when you had 1.5k subs a couple years back, you deserve the growth.
My impression is that at your level the difference is more in how fun they are to play than the resulting sound. BTW this is the best instrument comparison I ever saw!
For me most important thing is gasket between an instrument and a chair:)
But, seriously, in expensive ones intonation and tone more better, than in cheap ones. But it will doesn’t matters if you can’t play good enough to show this difference.
It would be useful to hear your critique of the euphs..
Nasir Ali was surprisingly good for money- might be worthwhile for jazz projects. JP was stunningly good and not just good for the money. But you could make a garden hose sound great.
Very nice
I can definitely hear that they get more clear as it's gets higher quality.
I like the Gemeinhardt the best in my opinion
Honestly, the cheap one sounded surprisingly good for that price point. Its obviously hard to make that judgement without knowing how hard it to make it sound that good, but the difference in tone quality compared to the difference in price makes me think it might be a worthwhile purchase for a middle school player.
Thank you so much my school is pretty strict when it comes to instruments. In 5th and 6th I played clarinet, then in 7th I played bass clarinet. But in 7th you can’t switch instruments, co I’m thinking euphonium can be a side instrument I can play on my free time.
Great playing! I loved the way you looped through the different horns for comparison. In the second song, it seemed like the Gemeinhardt couldn't land the B in tune compared to the other horns. Overall, I like the tone and intonation of the JP274s. Great job!
Naser Ali: 0:41
Gemeinhardt: 1:12
JP274s: 1:43
Jupiter XO: 2:13
Naser Ali: 4:00
Gemeinhardt: 4:15
JP274s: 4:29
Jupiter XO: 4:45
As a student musician, and on into a college music program, I never knew ANYONE who played a compensating euphonium. They were VERY rare, and prohibitively expensive. Yet, we ALL played in tune, because we were taught how to hear and play in pitch. For some very subjective and specific reasons, I need to use a non-compensating euphonium now, and I’m looking for the best one I can find. This video will be a huge help to me in finding what will work best for me. THANK YOU for this demo!
If you really like the 4-valve euphoniums that don’t have a compensating system but instead have all four valves in line up top, the Yamaha YEP-321 suits a lot of great players very well!
Surprised at how well the Nasir Ali one sounded compared to the gemeinhardt
From what I could hear, both intonation and tone got better the more expensive the instrument was, although the difference between the Nasir Ali and the other ones was the most significant. I'm still surprised how good (read: not bad) the first one sounded, would love to hear the euphonium I've been playing for over two years now (Monzani MZEP-1150, compensating, 549€) in comparison to your Jupiter when both are played by a professional player.
I'm still pretty convinced that a more expensive instrument shows its qualities the most when being played by a skilled player, while a beginner will usually sound relatively similar on low-end and high-end instruments.
I love the options range that young players get nowadays but your demonstration also makes me so much more fond of my Yamaha YEP 842S
Thanks for the video. I played a Yamaha in Highschool. It was a great instrument. I could mirror everything the trumpets played on it. My ears liked the Jupiter the best.
Amazing how good they all sound in your hands. I certainly tell that you were trying to hard to sound good on both the Nasir and Gemeinhardt .... the JP was the first in the serious to be taken seriously as a "good" horn, that's when the true warmth of the instrument started to really come through. If cash was of no option...I'd buy the XO (it's a beaut) but realistically the JP would serve my needs.
I think the JP felt more easy to project from what I heard whereas the Jupiter was way more mellow in a sense. But I think the Gemeinhardt sounded decent in terms of tone but of course the intonation would need some getting used to or adjustments. Great comparison!
The Jupiter XO 1270s definitely has the best natural tone quality (in my opinion). Its warm, dark, full, and rounded, and that's just how i like it. The intonation sounds very accurate as well, its also able to fill the room. I would love to put my money into this euphonium, but its simply over budget for me. The other euphonium i would take is the JP274s, I have actually been looking at it for a while now, and it pleases me so far
Good work. I really appreciated the side by side comparison.
Honestly that Nasir had some solid projection
Even though i'm a Bass Trombone player, the first one really caught my eye as my next purchase.
I used to play on a ~$3000 Yamaha YEP-321 and it was absolutely heavenly. I no longer have it and I, being a poor college student, resorted to buying a $300 Wurzbach. It gets the job done and, if you're a good player, you can make it sound nice, but it's nowhere near the tone quality and richness I had on the Yamaha. The intonation is also all over the place.
The nasir ali didn't sound as good. It might be a good one for a beginning player who might not stick with it. But one thing you cannot test in this video is how durable the horn is. I bought an inexpensive made in China euphonium when I was exploring switching from trumpet to euphonium. It worked well at first. Of course it was horribly out of tune, but that was mostly corrected with the tuning slides. But as time wore on the linkages on the rotary valves began to wear out. Soon I not only had a euphonium, but a full percussion section as well with all the clicking and clacking of the valve linkages. Moral of the story, not all the deficiencies of a cheap horn will show up immediately.
Such beautiful tone. Didn’t matter which one you played. 😊
My parents got me one for $1000 in middle school I am so happy to have parents like them it sounds amazing too
I play this this instrument in 6th grade band. I have one at school that is a Yamaha, and one at home that I forget the name of. But I just love this instrument.
AHHHH!! It’s River Flows In You by Yiruma !!! Transcribed into a Euph peice!! I love it!
He succeeded at making them all sound good, but I could tell that it took a lot more effort to make the plastic one sound good.
The last two sounded a bit different but I wouldn't say either was better or worse.
The non-compensating one I could tell that he had to put more effort in centering the pitch, even in the high register (in the video recorded lines I didn't see him use the fourth valve, but the comensating ones the lower harmonies were more in tune).
Compensating euphonium, 4th valve at the bottom
The JP sounds great for the price! Wasn't expecting it to keep up with the jupiter but it's probably a good option for those unable to afford professional model horns
I think the JP274s was probably the best. The cheap one was way too bright and “toyish” while I felt the Gemeinhardt was almost too dark. The JP gave almost the same tone and feeling as the Jupiter while still being a lot more cheap
Not just the sound, some differents are only the one who's playing can under stand , a nice instrument definitely makes playing easier.
The JP274S is best for the money. The Nasir Ali are perfect for high school.
Though the quality of the instrument improves as you go up the list, it's clear that it really depends on the musician. As long as an instrument functions, it's the musician that matters.
You are such a good player that you can make a cheap instrument sound good!
The Jupiter was so much more even in the higher register. The JP274s got super bright in the higher 7th partial range. I heard it a lot of the E's and F's.
Thanks for such a well-edited and efficient comparison video! To my ear, the Nasar Ali has a good sound for a brass band baritone horn in this range. The other three sound more like my concept of a good euphonium tone, with better projection as the price goes up. I wonder if a difference among them might be more apparent in a lower register. (When comparing plastic trombones with metal trombones, I notice little difference in tone up high, more in the middle register, and the most in the low register.)
I think on compensating euphoniums it's the fourth valve that routes the air through the compensating tubes. It didn't seem like what you were playing required the fourth valve much so the compensating vs non-compensating can't really be compared. But on my laptop speakers they were really close to one another, you hold intonation nicely on them all.
I definitely prefer the XO horn because it has a very powerful projection of the sound and it is quite a nimble instrument,I am a trombone player but I still like that horn.
I have a school owned yamahah neo I'm really lucky to have such a good instrument
For me the Jupiter has a more complete full sound. The others lack the ability to fill the room in the same way the Jupiter does. It gives it a slight edge and pros want every advantage possible.
The cheaper 2 were restrictive in their projection. I own a JP274S and only recently can I detect the better tone of the $$$ Jupiter.
Jupiter definitely has the best tone. It's rich and dark, absolutely beautiful. The JP274S, however, came close and, considering its price, is much more budget friendly. Out of curiosity, though: what model do you personally play (even if it's not one of these)?
What is most interesting is how good you can sound through cheaper instruments - beginner & intermediate players are not really going to be held back by these instruments. Also - and I may be biased because I have a JP374st - I think the 274 is pretty close to the XO - And the 374, being heavier, might be even closer. I suspect the JP will be the best return on money spent because it should be quite durable,
I'd love to see a comparison between traditional compensating euphoniums and the 4 valve (tuba style? I don't know exactly what to call them)
I'll take the 2nd or 3rd one. I did hear the difference in tone from the 1st one to the 2nd one. You can hear the toyish sound from the Nasir Ali. The 4th one is ok but not for the price.
I'm essentially a 'beginner' with brass instruments (although I've played woodwind and strings before). In addition to a 56 y/o Conn Director tenor trombone and a Blessing B-125 trumpet (each bought for ~$125 off eBay, and I'm satisfied and having fun with both), I ordered a new SAI euphonium (made in Meerut, UP, India; shipped from Delaware) from eBay (so many used instruments looked as if they had issues unless one went quite far up in price), so I'm looking forward to receiving and playing it. This is actually made of brass (as opposed to the Nasir Ali which appears not to be) so I'm hoping it has a decent sound and in general works well. I mentioned my additional purchase at my trombone lesson yesterday, and during the discussion it was mentioned that I don't really need a compensating instrument.
I thought all three metal instruments in the video were fairly similar but not identical, while the Nasir Ali had a somewhat different sound.
How do you like the sauce euphonium?
@@randallkaren4681 It hasn't arrived yet; it's expected within a week. I'll add another response after I've had a chance to play it a bit.
@@bobjacobson858 okay. I’m interested. I played in school and held first chair and let it go when I went into the army. I enjoyed playing and would like to play again but these instruments are so expensive.
@@randallkaren4681 The one I ordered is priced at $287.21. I copied and pasted the eBay webpage address for it, but it didn't attach successfully. I realized fairly quickly that I wasn't going to find either a baritone or euphonium in good, playable condition for the prices I paid for the trumpet and trombone. I figure trumpets, trombones, clarinets and perhaps violins are available at low prices because grade school kids take them up but many quit after their parents go out and buy instruments for them. Euphoniums, baritones, French horns and tubas usually aren't taken up until junior high school or later, and the schools lend them out, thus I suppose only more serious students end up acquiring their own. Due to the fact that these instruments are generally larger and more complicated than the other instruments, somewhat rarer than the others, typically more expensive initially, and 'dumped' on the secondary market less often than the grade-school' instruments, these factors all probably contribute to their higher prices.
@@bobjacobson858 Yes sir I would have to agree with you. I’m looking forward to hearing your personal over opinion on your purchase. Any chance you could send a short clip/vid on it?
The Nasr Ali sounds and looks like an Amati AEP 241. The difference is that Amati would have had you shell out 10 times the amount for the privelege. Ironically, I had a Boosey & Co. euphonium with the same tuning slide-before-valve arrangement as the Amati, and it was an amazing player, even with leaky valves that had no plating. It's no wonder British bands' low brass were Besson and B&H for better than a century.
I'm a percussionist who had always loved the Euphonium and was wondering what it would cost me if I wanted one to learn on.
I have to say, if I was made of money, that Jupiter XO sounds heavenly, no contest.
I'll take the Jupiter. Thank you.
Intonation is the most important by far.
you make anything sound good!!!!
Kinda prefer the JP to the XO to be honest. I like the lighter more "closed in" tone.
The fact he even bothered buying the cheap one
My tutor has the last one, and I think I have the second last one, but mine is gold
Update: I now have a silver euphonium that costs about $2000
Pog
Very nice video! Thanks for sharing.
Jupiter: _Yes._
JP: Nice
Gemini: Ehh...
Nasir Ali: eeeueghh.... its all over the place
i thought it was sharp
Razor fixed it
I have a 274S and have been very happy with it. Even if I had the bucks, I wouldn't spend 6 grand on a horn.
That's the feedback I've been getting from everyone who buys that horn and that's why I've been endorsing it for the last decade :)
I love the Jupiter, you can hear the difference from that and the Nasir, the Jupiter, is more in tuned, has more of a whole tone, the Nasir has a good tone, but the more expensive the instrument got the more beautiful the sound got. But the Jupiter in my opinion is the best, the sound it gives is much stronger, it’s in tune, and tone is mellow,
I really miss my trombone I got a chance to play the euphonium since I was the most advance for my instrument and I really liked it but im in HS and didn’t get a chance to join band again I wish to play either instrument nice video
The plastic eupho rocks for gritty feeling. It’s out of tune and rough as hell, but is also much less slick and more alive. Think of Bryan Ferry singing ‘Johnny and Mary’ with his ruined voice!
I think that the JP274s is the best for the cost, but I would like to know which you would recommend for the best tone. Thanks, and I love what you are doing for us with your videos!!! ❤️
Algirdas, you sound great on ALL of the horns, but what did you seriously think of the Nasir Ali? Was it free blowing? You made it sound terrific! I played Euphonium up through college and was a Music Education major for a couple of those years, but haven't played in a while (around 30 years now). I never owned my own horn as I always played school owned instruments, but have played professional level Besson horns and a Willson Euphonium, but it's been years ago. I am considering getting back into playing and have thought about possibly buying something like the Nasir for now to get myself reacquainted with the instrument since it's been quite a while. I still have my Schilke small shank mouthpiece I could use. What do you think? Is that horn even worth considering? Not for concert performances, but just to get restarted on the horn. Thank you!! LOVE your channel by the way!!
I guess if you’re a college or high school student on a budget, that JP would be the best “bang for your buck”. If you’re looking to go professional, then the Jupiter horn would be the best thing to purchase of course. If I’m a middle band director trying to outfit my students on a school horn, with a limited budget, then I’d go for that $1000 non compensating Euph. That white one isn’t that bad, but I’m guessing that you’re finessing the hell out of that horn. Personally, I wouldn’t want to be going around playing on that horn. I’d get roasted by every single being on the planet. Kudos though!
The JP274s is amazing. I would buy that is I could play Eupho (Tuba player). Have trouble reading Eupho music notes but no issues with Tuba for some reason.
Man I had to quit band because they didn’t want to move me to honors and now I’m homesick, homesick for a euphonium playing opportunity 😿
The Nasir Alir seems to be good enough for training where it doesn't matter how much the sound is carried.
It is without doubt flat in tone compared with the Jupiter XO, but that is to be expected at that price.
I got a cheap baritone horn from China that I upgraded the mouthpiece on.
The sound from it pretty much upgraded me from playing baritone horn to Euphonium, because if the quality of sound it carried. 😂
I do not play euphonium. Did I watch this whole video. Yes. Awesome.
What mic did you use? I am questioning what mic to get and this sounds really good!
The metal ones sounded more authentic and for me, the 3rd one sounded higher, and the 4th one sounded lower. The first one sounded more higher than the rest and it didn't have good quality.
The first two have very similar sound then the last to have that nicer softness and I'm sure the mure expensive one feels much better to play
Btw I play a yamaha $2500 at school
I have the one after the plastic one. My band director says that I’m really good and my tone is excellent on it
the cheapest one is agressive sounding but the others are sort of mellow its ok if ye get cheap but expensive ones are worth it
First euphonium sounds great and have good price and look amazing
The first two have tuning issues and small sounds. The 3rd has the characteristics of a euph but not the large sound of the final euph.
Lots of discussions about which PRC brass brands are meritous or junk. Their price points are changing the market. But some manufacturers deserve consideration and other brands need ignoring.
to me here's my price to sound ratio:
1. Gemeinhardt
2. Nasar Ali
3. JS
4. XO
I don't play euph so its from a buyers perspective
🍒Superb production; music w/ accurate indicator, no useless b.s., overall great. June 9/2023✝️
I'm not amazing at technical pieces but my tone and lyrical playing is amazing so I'd have to say a horn with better tone is what I would say is most important
Huge difference between the cheapest one and the $1000 one, then no real noticeable difference between the $1k & $2.25k one, then another noticeable difference between the mid tier ones and the $7k one.
Hey Matonizz. I've been reading through a lot of forums and threads, as well as watching and rewatching your reviews on the euphos. But for a while now, I've been caught between the JP274s and the Wessex Dolce. Due to living in an area of Australia that doesn't have a JP stocking store nearby, it's hard to drive to a store to playtest it. I wanted to ask about your opinion between the two, the tones of each, the pros and cons, and whether you prefer one over the other? The JP is apparently thicker compared to the Dolce, and I'll need a horn that will be pretty durable/repairable. Also, have you had any experiences with the Austin Custom Brass Doubler Euphonium? It seems to be a good choice too.
OTTIMO VIDEO 👏 .
Thank you!
@@Matonizz thank you too 🙂🙂🙂.
Gemainhardt seemed not to be in tune with itself. Very nice playing.
For reasons important only to me, I NEED to play an uncompensating horn. I want the best I can get for wind ensemble, possibly an occasional solo. Opinions?
Adams Sonic is probably a stellar non-compensating horn. Essentially the Adams E1 without the compensating system. I’ve even some some Adams Sonic euphoniums with a fifth valve where a tuning trigger would normally be.
I want to know what mouthpiece you prefer! I assume you used the same one on all of the horns? Thanks :)
What's the difference between Non-Compensating and Compensating?
There also the Schiller Elite for $850, it's the same quality as a $1000 Yamaha so it's worth it
