I miss playing the euphonium. Seeing your videos reminds me of a time when I was able to play in a wind ensemble, and do solo and ensemble in the states. I remember playing Fantasy by Sparke and how fulfilled I was when I was able to bring it to state. I love your recordings, Brother! Keep up the excellent content!
Damn. I practiced fantasy for a few years off and on to play it for solo and ensemble. The day it came I didn't even show up because I felt like I wasn't ready.
I'm just dusting off my 1973 era Mirafone rotary valve euphonium I was gifted by my high school band director when I was in college. Thought that I might be a music major in college, but ended up doing the performance route. I was in band, took private lessons, had recitals and juries. Once I graduated, I always found a community band to play in for about 20 years. Now it's been 20 years since I've been in one. About to return this fall. The horn gets a lot of attention. It's a beautiful instrument and I don't know if they are making rotary valve euphoniums any more. There were lean times when I actually thought about selling it. I'm glad I had the sense to hold on to it. After about two weeks of daily practice, it's the upper range and breath control seem to be the biggest challenges. But that is improving each day. Hope to get back to where I can play "Beautiful Colorado" in a recital like I did in my college years. Quick question: What's the best source of sheet music online? Any recommendations for contemporary tunes that may not be too challenging, but still could be done with accompaniment? Books? My library is like time travel to the late 70s and early 80s. Also thinking about assembling a quartet locally around the holidays to do that sort of music in a public space, perhaps with a trumpet, tuba, euphonium (me) and a French horn. Any suggestions appreciated. Thanks!

Great comparison video! I like better the darker and warmer sound of the JP over the Schiller which to my ears sounds more towards the baritone. That being said, last year, I bought myself the JP374 Sterling and I would very much like you to compare it to your own Sterling Virtuoso. I chose my JP over a Willson 2960ST because of the projection and the warmth of the sound, I could have easily chosen the Willson because money was no object, but it started blasting at one point when I really opened up to see what both of them could take while the JP took everything I was giving it. Looking forward to see and hear if you are up to the challenge. Keep up the good work,
I own both. They really came alive when I started to use the Denis Wick 4al mouthpiece on them. I like how light the schiller is in its case when I need to carry one around. The JP does have a more Besson like sound but it is heavier in its case. I like how both play and sound, they are just different from each other. The valve noise is nothing compared to euphoniums I've played with metal valve guides.
Spot on on the discussion about pitch and tuning tendencies. That's why pitch bending is so important. That's also why I like a lot of grace in having wide slots on the instruments so that I can adjust more easily in ensemble playing. I like a wide throat in the mouthpiece. I like to think of it this way- you buzz the pitch for accuracy. You pull the slide for tone. That's why I play horns that give me access to the slides when I have the choice, but the trigger is almost a necessity for things like the sixth partial that almost always are sharp for acoustical reasons on almost all brass instruments. Very, very well put.
I have the Schiller Elite since June. I am a basic player. Love it so far. Cheap upgrade of the springs and the fets are fixing most of the valve noise issue. I don't have much points of comparison but i love the fact i can own a brand new instrument, definitely helps with the pleasure to practice and your video makes me feel very good with the quality. I just looked at the Schiller Elite V which comes with a tuning trigger. Would it be possible for you to do a review on it or at least give me some insight through a reply? I want a personal euphonium and like the idea of a tuning trigger but like the sound of the jp274 over the Schiller and wanted some more insight as to if it is worth it. Thanks

Could you possibly try out testing a Geneva Euphonium (Oldsroyd, GVL, Symphony) in comparison to your favorite horns (ex. Your Sterling Virtuoso) or any similar to the Geneva’s in a future video?
The Mack Brass, and the Schiller Elite are virtually Yamaha 642 copies. Why not do a side by side comparisons to the Yamaha. I would like to know if there is really $4000 worth of difference between them. The Mack Brass EU1150S, is still only $995 + Shipping. The YEP 642 "Neo" is around $5000 -$6000.
Great video, Matoniz, with some brilliant explanations and insights. I had to sell my Besson Prestige a few years ago, and got hold of a JP274 as replacement. It’s a great instrument. The only problem I found was having to adjust my airflow as I found (and still do!) it very easy to overblow by pushing too much air through it too quickly. But once I got used to that, I am very happy with it :)
I've had the Schiller Elite paired with a Schilke 51D since May and am pretty happy overall. I'm not a good enough player to pony up for a Yamaha so this fits the bill. It's easy to play and sounds good. The valves required some breaking in but are pretty smooth now. There are some annoying minor QC issues (threads on 1st and 2nd valves aren't smooth) but that was to be expected with the price. The inner part of the 1st valve tuning slide is already starting to rust a little, which is kind of disappointing. The horn is still stock (I haven't replaced springs or anything) but will get around to changing out some stuff eventually.
I wonder how much of the tone difference can be attributed to the difference in finish. Brass finish always sounds brighter to me. I prefer the bright sounds, but I am a trombone player. The silver probably sounds more like what I expect a euphonium to sound like. My son is a euphonium player, and I am looking to get him his own horn rather than a school rental. I love the way you sound. Thank you for posting your videos.
I was under the impression JP was just a jacked up JinBao! All Schillers, Wessex, Mack, etc come from the same Chinese(JinBao) factory, BTW! The difference is in the attention to detail. One of my associates told me JP was Not produced by JinBao, but they come in the exact same cases as all the other Jinbao stencils! I have yet to have a JP side by side with a Mack, or Wessex, but I would not hesitate recommending a Mack, or Wessex, at much less, to any student! I know the owners of Mack Brass, and Wessex personally, and i can tell you that their JinBao's are all given more attention in production than the average re-seller looking to make a buck! I can also tell you that Mack, and Wessex, don't double up on what they sell, or on Silver plating, as well!
Great Video! I’m a trombonist looking for a Euphonium to double on, and it would almost definitely be one of these two horns (or the Wessex Dolce). Have you had a chance to play the JP374 yet? If so, how do you feel it compares to your 274, especially with the price point in mind.

As a professional brass player and someone who is completely unfamiliar with both of these horns, let me tell you it is no contest between the two after hearing you play them. The JP274 blows the Schiller out of the water by a mile. Normally I wouldn't be inclined to make that judgement based on an internet video because hey.....things can vary by player, mic setup, etc. but the JP's sound and intonation is so much better that I feel like that gap couldn't be closed by the Schiller even in different circumstances with a diff. player.
Thank you for this comparison, but I have two comments. At the end of your helpful comparison, you leave a cramped recording studio for a magnificent auditorium. I dare say that my Schiller V will sound almost equivalent to that more expensive Sterling in that great hall. Keep in mind I am.not comparing talent, but tone quality. Second: the Valves on the Schiller are made of exactly the same material as in your high priced instruments. The difference is that the manufactures of the more expensive horn's work on the valves for precision fit in a way that would not be cost effective on a lesser horn. I took my Schiller to a. Valve specialist and for $20.00 per valve, he completely transformed my valves. I have had other euphers play my horn who own much more expensive horn's. Every one who has played my horn has been astonished at the speed and quiet of my horn. He even sped up my paddle. I do my recording in my study with a Single Yeti microphone and record into Garage Band and the quality is excellent. Also, my horn is silver and there is a difference between brass plating and Silver. Thanks again for your head to head comparison.

@@dapaulson1 I purchased an elite compensating in lacquer. The lowest price model. It suits my community band needs. Plays in tune, sounds good. Good valves and compression. .slides are perfect. Plenty of water keys.
From what I can tell, the JP has a less focused and more British sounding tone similar to a Besson while the Schiller resembles that of a Yamaha 642. Both horns sound great, but I prefer the flexibility of the JP. I think it would have been a cool idea to see how compatible those horns are working together in a duet or how each horn sounds in a concert hall.
Hi Matonizz--don't know if you'll see this or not. Do you have any info on the longevity of these cheaper horns? That honestly is my main worry with them. I've heard some brass repair guys mention that some of the cheaper horns (especially Chinese or Indian manufacture) are almost impossible to repair because the metal is so thin that they just about crumple under pressure. Do you know anything on this?
I have a jp274 and agree with you video. The mouthpiece that came with it suits me well. Do you play with a wet or dry mouthpiece, I find a dry mouthpiece gives more security in the high register but a wet mouthpiece seems more comfortable in the middle and low notes.

The problem with instrument intonation isn't 100% whether the player has the skill to compensate... sure, to play in tune, that's all it takes. BUT. If the instrument is out of tune, you have to bend notes around and they lose a bit of resonance when you do it - and it's more tiring to do that.
EnglishTMTB my school has some Bach baritone (it's the school's only actual baritone, the rest are euphs) which is interesting. The horn is mostly fine, except the second partial, which is atrocious. It plays a whole note flat. Bb is Ab, A is G, and so on. I can lip it up to a flat Bb, but I don't have to use any valves until I hit G. It's ridiculous.
Why didn't you compare the Schiller Elite V? I had the Elite V with the tuning paddle. The pricing on the Schiller seems to be well below the JP274S. I purchased a Silver Schiller Elite V for $1250 with the tuning paddle. I really enjoyed the horn, until I played my Miraphone M5050e. I did not have to pay shipping as I was able to get the horn right in the city where I live. My Miraphone was many times more expensive than the Schiller and it is a wonderful horn, but it is not many times better than the Schiller, but for my purpose, the differences make the difference. I played the Schiller Elite V for several years and now it is enjoyed by its new owner. But when you want projection, the big daddy Miraphone is something else again.
Matonizz, love your stuff. Was wondering about the durability and repairability of these horns. I’m a Music Education Major looking for a cheap option for a compensating horn so I can save up for a better one in the future. If you could answer that question that would be great.
Hi Nick, the JP274 I used in this video I still use in my current videos, including one uploaded yesterday. I never put this horn on my flight schedule but have been using it home regularly and daily for last year. Valves are the only thing I had been investing money to repair wise since this video was made. Probably no more than $200 total. So, to answer the durability, same as any top line horn. As for Schiller, can't really comment since I haven't used it since this video. JP274 I am super confident in recommending for people who are looking affordable horn with top line qualities. If you're ok with finding some alternate fingerings for few lower notes and replacing valve guides on somewhat regular basis that's the best bang for your buck. Best, M
If you are able to get a hold of a john packer 374 you really should try to compare the 274 and the 374 and do a comparison like you did on the Yamaha instruments
So as a freshman (currently) I have been looking for a new horn. I did auditions for a select band and ranked very closely to the euph players in our wind symphony which has been playing level 5 music for a while. Would you recommend a JP for someone like me who’s not in the best financial situation but a beginners horn just doesn’t cut it.
Are we supposed to recognize some obscure (to me) tune that apparently you are playing along with in your first segment? It would be nice if you shared the name of that tune. When it started I thought it was some "new" classical thing for Euphonium, but apparently, as it proceeded, some guy starts singing, so I thought it must be some new pop song thing that I don't know, and I STILL don't know, since you did not include the name of tune nor band/artist. Perhaps there are copyright issues, I don't know, but I STILL do not know what tune you were playing in the first segment of this video.

JP wins for me. The tone is richer and has more depth. It feels like it has more substance. And the valve noise... Schiller was really loud compared to JP.
I have the Schiller Elite I got it for $850 I think. It's really good, not the best, but sounds great. My tone was actually a bit darker so idk if it's the instrument or if it is my own sound
Do we know which Schiller Elite this is? I see they have 3 main models of compensating euphoniums - Elite, Elite IV, and Elite V. I think we can confirm this isn't the V, since it doesn't have the tuning trigger.
I play a 967 Besson Sovereign from 1994, so I was instantly drawn to the JP over the Schiller in your demo for the darker, warmer tone. But when you decided to 'have a little fun', I was amazed how the brightness of the Schiller worked better for my ear with that track. But in Brass band... Darker is always nice. Horses for courses! Keep up the amazing work for our instrument of choice!
I got my JP a few days ago and I was super impressed by the horn. I got it for 1100$ and it was just amazing for the price. The only problem is that it had a small dent on the bottom of the horn but I knew about that before buying the horn from Reeves Brass in Bedford England
Glad you're enjoying it Tiffany. I don't know what deal you got but normally JP instruments come with great warranty which is supposed to cover the expenses for fixing the dent. Go to jp website and try to register you're instrument for warranty and see what comes out. Best, A
AshTSparkle it has surprisingly worked very well. Well worth the price they ask for and it plays fantastically. Only problem is that the second seems to be a little too long in design so you’ll often have to lip up those A’s and E’s but this might just be a me problem. My only complaint was the mouthpiece. It’s a great rim sized mouthpiece but for some reason I had gotten a sore spot on my upper left lip from it. I highly recommend getting another mouthpiece with it personal recommendation being the schilke 51d with it’s nice offer of a really deep cup
Hai Matonizz is there a difference in sound or response on a lacquered and a silver plated euphonium assume it's the same modell and brand when it is a pro Level horn perhaps a stupid question ?
Hello Ted, while this is a late response let me first state I am by no means a brass expert. But I have done some extensive research on this subject. There is the belief that lacquer's thicker layer creates a softer/darker/richer tone whereas the silver plated (or raw brass - which isn't recommended due to oxidation issues) have a brighter "brassier" sound. But the difference among the 2 finish types is only very subtle at best. Even professional musicians fall into the "placebo effect"... in a similar way as "audiophiles" have on their speaker equipment. If they THINK there is a difference, their brain will trick them into thinking they actually HEAR the difference. This topic is a very controversial one, as some studies suggest the difference is completely negligible. I don't believe that is the case, but it is far from "night & day" as some have suggested. Realistically, it's probably only a 1%-2% difference at best but it would be nice if Matonizz or Dave Warden would chime in on this subject.
If you wouldn't mind answering another question of mine, what are some ways that you can improve tone quality and intonation on a non-compensating Euphonium? I personally play on a Besson London BE 765 (not any of the new standard Euphoniums). Any help/tips would be greatly appreciated.
Ethan Spradling As a Trombone player who knows how to play Euphonium/Baritone its honestly just best to record yourself while practicing, and then listen to it and find a couple things to work on, trust me I've been playing 4 years and I still find things i mess upnon, youll never run out.
Try to practice a little bit with a tuner. Try out different fingerings. Practice false tones and pedal tones and practice buzzing with and without mouthpiece. And listen and try to sing a bit because it gives you a more active ear. Try out different ways of tuning your instrument. And most of all, listen!!!
Should've been harsher on the schiller. It costs way more and loses in valve noise, accuracy, intonation. Th eyre both great but Mack brass sells the jp274s for 995 love the video though
John Packer reps tell me that their horns are NOT stencil horns. They said it is their own dedicated design and dedicated factory. Seems hard to believe given the fact that they are priced the same as many stencil horns. Here is the actual quote: “Dedicated factory and design. We don’t do stencils.” Can you confirm this?
It is true. Not sure how they manage to keep their price so low but they don't use Jinbao stencil that all the other companies use. They have their own design. One of the reasons why I stand by my claim that it is the best instrument in that price range on the market :)
Hello, I compared pictures of the JP274 and Thomann EP902. They look very, very identical. Thus my conlcusion is: Thomann EP902 is not a Jinbao-Horn (if the JP isn´t one).
The Schiller probably. Or you can just try and compare the video with that of a Yamaha or Besson. The JP274 is a Besson clone while the Schiller looks like a Yamaha clone.

dont wanna sound like an asshole or anything, but i just looked up the JP274, mostly because i would like a euph after i graduate from highschool since im only borrowing one from the school, and that is nowhere near cheap. ive looked up other euphs before and from what i can remember, its not really any cheaper than any professional euphonium.
okay nevermind, i forgot that some professional euphoniums cost like 4, 5, or even 6 thousand dollars. i guess its definitely cheaper, but cheap isnt really the word id be looking for.
Most times if you want named brand professional compensating euphoniums you’d have to pay anywhere between $6k to $10k though... so compared to those JP and Schiller are bargains
its not a bad thing if you know how to not knock them over, i sit my euphonium on its bell everytime rather then on its side, theres less to scratch up when its on its bell, most band teachers tell their students not to do it so as to save the instrument from careless accidents

The Schiller Elite V has a tuning paddle that works very well, is as fast as the valves and helps on those few notes that need to be "flatted" a bit.

I wonder how much of the tone difference can be attributed to the difference in finish. Brass finish always sounds brighter to me. I prefer the bright sounds, but I am a trombone player. The silver probably sounds more like what I expect a euphonium to sound like. My son is a euphonium player, and I am looking to get him his own horn rather than a school rental.

I was under the impression JP was just a jacked up JinBao! All Schillers, Wessex, Mack, etc come from the same Chinese(JinBao) factory, BTW! The difference is in the attention to detail. One of my associates told me JP was Not produced by JinBao, but they come in the exact same cases as all the other Jinbao stencils! I have yet to have a JP side by side with a Mack, or Wessex, but I would not hesitate recommending a Mack, or Wessex, at much less, to any student! I know the owners of Mack Brass, and Wessex personally, and i can tell you that their JinBao's are all given more attention in production than the average re-seller looking to make a buck! I can also tell you that Mack, and Wessex, don't double up on what they sell, or on Silver plating, as well!

The schiller don't sound as good as the jp that's my opinion and the schiller sound like baritone again it's my opinion

I found it very useful when deciding to buy a Schiller Elite V recently that comes with a trigger rather than a more expensive horn with a trigger such as a Besson Pretige, etc. I'm getting back into playing a euphhonium after a long time away and haven't used a trigger before. As a professional brass player and someone who is completely unfamiliar with both of these horns, let me tell you it is no contest between the two after hearing you play them. The JP274 blows the Schiller out of the water by a mile. Normally I wouldn't be inclined to make that judgement based on an internet video because hey.....things can vary by player, mic setup, etc. but the JP's sound and intonation is so much better that I feel like that gap couldn't be closed by the Schiller even in different circumstances with a diff. player.
Honestly confused why he didn’t compare it with the Wessex Dolce. I’m pretty sure that instrument is better overall compared to the Schiller.

Thank you for this comparison, but I have two comments. At the end of your helpful comparison, you leave a cramped recording studio for a magnificent auditorium. I dare say that my Schiller V will sound almost equivalent to that more expensive Sterling in that great hall. Keep in mind I am.not comparing talent, but tone quality. Second: the Valves on the Schiller are made of exactly the same material as in your high priced instruments. The difference is that the manufactures of the more expensive horn's work on the valves for precision fit in a way that would not be cost effective on a lesser horn. I took my Schiller to a. Valve specialist and for $20.00 per valve, he completely transformed my valves. I have had other euphers play my horn who own much more expensive horn's. Every one who has played my horn has been astonished at the speed and quiet of my horn. He even sped up my paddle. I do my recording in my study with a Single Yeti microphone and record into Garage Band and the quality is excellent. Also, my horn is silver and there is a difference between brass plating and Silver. Thanks again for your head to head comparison.

I just bought a Schiller this week, and the valves seem quite good with Hetmans synthetic valve oil.
Which Schiller did you get? If you decide to get tech oil, completely clean your valves and cylinders before applying it.
@@dapaulson1 I purchased an elite compensating in lacquer. The lowest price model. It suits my community band needs. Plays in tune, sounds good. Good valves and compression. .slides are perfect. Plenty of water keys.
I know our school has JP marching baritones and they are top notch!! Hoping in the future I can buy the JP274.
From what I can tell, the JP has a less focused and more British sounding tone similar to a Besson while the Schiller resembles that of a Yamaha 642. Both horns sound great, but I prefer the flexibility of the JP. I think it would have been a cool idea to see how compatible those horns are working together in a duet or how each horn sounds in a concert hall.
Hi Matonizz--don't know if you'll see this or not. Do you have any info on the longevity of these cheaper horns? That honestly is my main worry with them. I've heard some brass repair guys mention that some of the cheaper horns (especially Chinese or Indian manufacture) are almost impossible to repair because the metal is so thin that they just about crumple under pressure. Do you know anything on this?
I have a jp274 and agree with you video. The mouthpiece that came with it suits me well. Do you play with a wet or dry mouthpiece, I find a dry mouthpiece gives more security in the high register but a wet mouthpiece seems more comfortable in the middle and low notes.

What about King , Besson prodigy or Thomann compensating models?
The problem with instrument intonation isn't 100% whether the player has the skill to compensate... sure, to play in tune, that's all it takes.
BUT.
If the instrument is out of tune, you have to bend notes around and they lose a bit of resonance when you do it - and it's more tiring to do that.
EnglishTMTB my school has some Bach baritone (it's the school's only actual baritone, the rest are euphs) which is interesting.
The horn is mostly fine, except the second partial, which is atrocious. It plays a whole note flat. Bb is Ab, A is G, and so on. I can lip it up to a flat Bb, but I don't have to use any valves until I hit G. It's ridiculous.
Why didn't you compare the Schiller Elite V? I had the Elite V with the tuning paddle. The pricing on the Schiller seems to be well below the JP274S. I purchased a Silver Schiller Elite V for $1250 with the tuning paddle. I really enjoyed the horn, until I played my Miraphone M5050e. I did not have to pay shipping as I was able to get the horn right in the city where I live. My Miraphone was many times more expensive than the Schiller and it is a wonderful horn, but it is not many times better than the Schiller, but for my purpose, the differences make the difference. I played the Schiller Elite V for several years and now it is enjoyed by its new owner. But when you want projection, the big daddy Miraphone is something else again.
Matonizz, love your stuff. Was wondering about the durability and repairability of these horns. I’m a Music Education Major looking for a cheap option for a compensating horn so I can save up for a better one in the future. If you could answer that question that would be great.
Hi Nick, the JP274 I used in this video I still use in my current videos, including one uploaded yesterday. I never put this horn on my flight schedule but have been using it home regularly and daily for last year. Valves are the only thing I had been investing money to repair wise since this video was made. Probably no more than $200 total. So, to answer the durability, same as any top line horn. As for Schiller, can't really comment since I haven't used it since this video. JP274 I am super confident in recommending for people who are looking affordable horn with top line qualities. If you're ok with finding some alternate fingerings for few lower notes and replacing valve guides on somewhat regular basis that's the best bang for your buck. Best, M
If you are able to get a hold of a john packer 374 you really should try to compare the 274 and the 374 and do a comparison like you did on the Yamaha instruments
JP sounds clearer. The Schiller sounds stuffy. BTW, nice playing...for a euphonium. :-) (That's a complement from a trumpet player).

So as a freshman (currently) I have been looking for a new horn. I did auditions for a select band and ranked very closely to the euph players in our wind symphony which has been playing level 5 music for a while. Would you recommend a JP for someone like me who’s not in the best financial situation but a beginners horn just doesn’t cut it.

Are we supposed to recognize some obscure (to me) tune that apparently you are playing along with in your first segment? It would be nice if you shared the name of that tune. When it started I thought it was some "new" classical thing for Euphonium, but apparently, as it proceeded, some guy starts singing, so I thought it must be some new pop song thing that I don't know, and I STILL don't know, since you did not include the name of tune nor band/artist. Perhaps there are copyright issues, I don't know, but I STILL do not know what tune you were playing in the first segment of this video.

Technically it should change projection bit more than tone but I've never had an accurate way of truly measuring that :)
JP wins for me. The tone is richer and has more depth. It feels like it has more substance. And the valve noise... Schiller was really loud compared to JP.

I'd say yes. One of my students has a Schiller Bb Tuba and it's really good for the price.
I have the Schiller Elite I got it for $850 I think. It's really good, not the best, but sounds great. My tone was actually a bit darker so idk if it's the instrument or if it is my own sound
i like the way the john packer sounds. so soft. both still sound good, but schiller has a much more brassy sound. i just prefer the softer sound

Do we know which Schiller Elite this is? I see they have 3 main models of compensating euphoniums - Elite, Elite IV, and Elite V. I think we can confirm this isn't the V, since it doesn't have the tuning trigger.

I play a 967 Besson Sovereign from 1994, so I was instantly drawn to the JP over the Schiller in your demo for the darker, warmer tone. But when you decided to 'have a little fun', I was amazed how the brightness of the Schiller worked better for my ear with that track.
But in Brass band... Darker is always nice. Horses for courses!

How can you compare 2 different plated instruments? Obviously one will have a tone difference based only on plating.
I got my JP a few days ago and I was super impressed by the horn. I got it for 1100$ and it was just amazing for the price. The only problem is that it had a small dent on the bottom of the horn but I knew about that before buying the horn from Reeves Brass in Bedford England
Glad you're enjoying it Tiffany. I don't know what deal you got but normally JP instruments come with great warranty which is supposed to cover the expenses for fixing the dent. Go to jp website and try to register you're instrument for warranty and see what comes out. Best, A

AshTSparkle it has surprisingly worked very well. Well worth the price they ask for and it plays fantastically. Only problem is that the second seems to be a little too long in design so you’ll often have to lip up those A’s and E’s but this might just be a me problem. My only complaint was the mouthpiece. It’s a great rim sized mouthpiece but for some reason I had gotten a sore spot on my upper left lip from it. I highly recommend getting another mouthpiece with it personal recommendation being the schilke 51d with it’s nice offer of a really deep cup

Hello Ted, while this is a late response let me first state I am by no means a brass expert. But I have done some extensive research on this subject. There is the belief that lacquer's thicker layer creates a softer/darker/richer tone whereas the silver plated (or raw brass - which isn't recommended due to oxidation issues) have a brighter "brassier" sound. But the difference among the 2 finish types is only very subtle at best. Even professional musicians fall into the "placebo effect"... in a similar way as "audiophiles" have on their speaker equipment. If they THINK there is a difference, their brain will trick them into thinking they actually HEAR the difference. This topic is a very controversial one, as some studies suggest the difference is completely negligible. I don't believe that is the case, but it is far from "night & day" as some have suggested. Realistically, it's probably only a 1%-2% difference at best but it would be nice if Matonizz or Dave Warden would chime in on this subject.

If you wouldn't mind answering another question of mine, what are some ways that you can improve tone quality and intonation on a non-compensating Euphonium? I personally play on a Besson London BE 765 (not any of the new standard Euphoniums). Any help/tips would be greatly appreciated.
Ethan Spradling As a Trombone player who knows how to play Euphonium/Baritone its honestly just best to record yourself while practicing, and then listen to it and find a couple things to work on, trust me I've been playing 4 years and I still find things i mess upnon, youll never run out.
Try to practice a little bit with a tuner. Try out different fingerings. Practice false tones and pedal tones and practice buzzing with and without mouthpiece. And listen and try to sing a bit because it gives you a more active ear. Try out different ways of tuning your instrument. And most of all, listen!!!
Why did you prefer the Schiller stencil to the Wessex or the Mack Brass?
wessex has quality control on site . thats why they are pricier
you should do a review on the 800 dollar sousaphone on amazon just to test the quality and how bad it truly is

Should've been harsher on the schiller. It costs way more and loses in valve noise, accuracy, intonation. Th eyre both great but Mack brass sells the jp274s for 995 love the video though
John Packer reps tell me that their horns are NOT stencil horns. They said it is their own dedicated design and dedicated factory.
Seems hard to believe given the fact that they are priced the same as many stencil horns.

It is true. Not sure how they manage to keep their price so low but they don't use Jinbao stencil that all the other companies use. They have their own design. One of the reasons why I stand by my claim that it is the best instrument in that price range on the market :)

Hello, I compared pictures of the JP274 and Thomann EP902. They look very, very identical. Thus my conlcusion is: Thomann EP902 is not a Jinbao-Horn (if the JP isn´t one).

The Schiller probably. Or you can just try and compare the video with that of a Yamaha or Besson. The JP274 is a Besson clone while the Schiller looks like a Yamaha clone.

Not River City Brass. We play very little test pieces so I'd say 50/50 when it comes to clefs.
dont wanna sound like an asshole or anything, but i just looked up the JP274, mostly because i would like a euph after i graduate from highschool since im only borrowing one from the school, and that is nowhere near cheap. ive looked up other euphs before and from what i can remember, its not really any cheaper than any professional euphonium.
okay nevermind, i forgot that some professional euphoniums cost like 4, 5, or even 6 thousand dollars. i guess its definitely cheaper, but cheap isnt really the word id be looking for.

Most times if you want named brand professional compensating euphoniums you’d have to pay anywhere between $6k to $10k though... so compared to those JP and Schiller are bargains

its not a bad thing if you know how to not knock them over, i sit my euphonium on its bell everytime rather then on its side, theres less to scratch up when its on its bell, most band teachers tell their students not to do it so as to save the instrument from careless accidents
