    Lord of illusions is a underrated gem of a movie and I hope that the directors cut comes out. Clive barker is a master of horror and the three movies he did definitely helped horror movies for years to come.

    All three films are extremely underrated. I like his in and out approach to his filmmaking. I think he realized that writing is alot better than directing. Less meddling. That's the main reason he stopped directing.

    I LOVE LORD OF ILLUSIONS.... i was soooo lucky to get to see it at the movies when it first came out...... now having said that... what i would love to see happen with this film which i strongly believe would enable it to be brought back to the cinema for a re-evaluation - RE DO THE CGI EFFECTS.... just like what Lucas did with chapter 4,5 and 6.... the cgi in Lord of Illusions is the only thing that prevents it being a masterpiece and i don't think it would be that hard to give them an upgrade

    Barker did a great job with his 3 feature theatrical releases. I wish he'd do one last movie before he gets too old, but I doubt it will come to pass given the present situation in the international film industry and his health issues.

  • @xxxholic22
    @xxxholic22 11 месяцев назад +1

    Clive Barker wrote harry d'amour as his self insert character - and he was in deep with neil gaiman [I think they still might be besties] and there was a lot of talk about constantine, and I always got the idea from harry d'amour that he's how barker saw constantine - ie who he would be if he'd been a barker construct [American Gods for example is very similar to The Damnation game - it's two great authors spitballing ideas and going in different directions from the same simple premise]
    but
    there's always a but with barker
    Barker might be the very best horror writer alive right now, and also the worst. His work swings wildly and there is no middle ground, you never have someone go "oh that was an okay story" it was either "amazing" or "terrible" and it's true, he doesn't see himself as a horror writer but instead a fantasist and explores worlds rather than threats, there's a physicality and bodily aware in ways others aren't. He's not writing about kings and queens, but instead world hopping in ways that inspired Philip Pullman
    the hellbound heart [Hellraiser], and Cabal are both very good, as is the Forbidden [Candyman] as is Rawhead Rex and The midnight meat train - but for every one of those is there is a mister b gone or a galilee where they are unfinished and bloated and need a good edit and rewrite - something like Coldheart Canyon has brilliant sequences but most of it is - is meh
    you absolutely can and should read his work, but even in the Harry D'Amour stuff it's very uneven - I can't say read his work without that codicil
    I liked the Lord of Illusions and its - you can't follow Candyman with a dark fantasy noir and expect it to work, bad timing

    Omg. Boon was in the only hellraiser movie that came out after the second that i kind of like. He was a detective too, and ooooh. Harry D'mour! Holy fuck, that movie had a lot of potential to be good. He could have played Harry who is a friend that knows and kind of understands the hidden magic world and stuff. He's a pretty open guy when thinking of what's possibly. Anyway it's kind of an okay movie. But they could have kept everyone involved but maybe... ask Clive Barker for... not what he thinks about it, but what creative input to shape it. And it could have been a great movie and didn't have to change much. Just the tone and dialogue and maybe everything i guess. Lol. I'm saying it could have been a good movie if it was different. That's like saying it could have been good if it didn't exist

    It's a big miss on your side that you haven't read some of the Clive books and comics. For example, his anthology comics (I'm talking about the original Hellraiser comics series) are the real Hellraiser heart, because they are a mythology that explains the genesis of Hellraiser and it is far better than the movies. For me, only Hellraiser Original and Hellraiser: Bloodline are good movies. The others are more exploitation of the idea because of money, but no soul is invested.
    And the books. Especially the second Hellraiser book: "Scarlet Gospel" where the present material relates because the main character in that book is your exorcist Harry D'amour who is the main character in "the illusionist". And it's just an amazing book for it reveals another of Mr. D'amour's many adventures but this one in "Scarlet Gospel" is the greatest.

    I was born in 81 and my mom loved horror movies. To the point where most kids get indoctrinated into whatever religion there parents believe, I was indoctrinated into horror films. I literally knew about the fictional character called pin head before the much later trauma I experienced in my mid teens that adults aren't lying about their belief in whichever God, they actually believe it. And that's when my depression hit... didn't know how to live in a world that thinks fake is real... it's been thirty years since I had that thought and I still don't know how to exist except to not say what I think. Maybe it's better to think this is the beginning of our lives when we die? That's way more comfortable then spending the years I did in terror, learning how the brain works, endorphins and such. They basically emotion is chemical structure that gets released into... shit... I'm have to write a lot of I go there. But it made sense to me and still does. But then I realized adults think gods are real and I've been mind fucked since. I'm forty now, tried to figure which God might be real but the mono gods say all the other gods don't exist, but then there's religion with many gods existing... sometimes fighting each other. It was hard for me to think it's real as a child. Even harder today. Anyway, I read a lot of Clive Barker's books. And even read a few of them more than thrice. Weave world and Imajica... especially imajica... anyway, I wasn't disappointed watching Lord of illusion... no movie he's made or is based on his books come close to his books. And seriously, I don't think I've ever had an issue with my sexuality or others because I read his books. I'm fact I learned he was gay after reading many because he dedicated the book to the love of his life and I thought... "He's gay?... holy shit, that kinda explains a lot! Awesome!"

    Please stop with these flippant "Instant Classic" claims. It's so arbitrary and mostly just untrue hyperbole just to get clicks. In Clive Barker's case only Hellraiser is what you would call an "instant classic". It changed the landscape of horror and was uniquely terrifying. Nightbreed would be considered an "overlooked and forgotten cult classic". It undeservedly flopped hard. I was underage so I begged my older sister to take me on opening weekend and we were the only people in the theater. I loved it but the majority did not think so until more recent re-evaluations. Lord of Illusions is interesting but messy and not nearly as creatively successful as Barker's first two efforts. Yes, studio interference hobbled both Nightbreed and Lord of Illusions from being actual classics but they are wildly entertaining nonetheless. However, Hellraiser and (although he didn't direct) Hellbound: Hellraiser II are the jewels in Clive's crown.
