Trespasser is a video game released in 1998 for Microsoft Windows. The game was billed as a "digital sequel" to the 1997 film The Lost World: Jurassic Park, on which it is based. The player assumes the role of Anne who is the sole survivor of a plane crash on InGen's "Site B" one year after the events of The Lost World: Jurassic Park. Anne must escape the remote island by solving puzzles and evading dangerous dinosaurs.
The game is noted for the involvement of the film's director, Steven Spielberg,[citation needed] and actors Richard Attenborough and Minnie Driver. Trespasser's game engine was advanced for its time and required a fast and powerful computer to adequately display the game's detailed graphics without pixelation artifacts. The ambitious game ultimately received mixed to negative reviews at the time and disappointed many reviewers, some declaring the game as "the worst game of 1998". It is believed this was caused by rushing the game's development to reach the preset release date and the game being too overly ambitious and advanced for its time.

Nice
When did the price go to 40$? It used to be less than 15, and it looks like similarly priced now...
soo, pirating?
Woman: Excuse me my eyes are up here!
Guy: Excuse me I am checking your health.
And I must say, your health is great!
I think they check more for kitties here :P
Ohhhh let me touch your healthy it might be broken
Using this.
Aw I was thinking the same thing
Ironically the health system from the game was invented to hide the fact that they couldn’t animate the protagonist’s legs. Yes really.
Too good. I wanted this game badly in '98. It looked so good at that time. Then I got to play demo version and I did not get it. Controls felt just very bad. I was used to classic fps. I replayed the whole game after 18 years and it was charming. Great atmosphere and dinosaurs. Now it seems to me it was just released and made in the wrong era. 90s fps games were about control and shooting in the first place. This game was too hard to control and at the same time boring for bloodlusty fps players.
10000000 IQ PLAY
Seems like they could've just put it on her arm so it was easier to see, and still gave her a great rack to cover her lack of legs
It's likely because of the inverse kinematics, which wasn't nearly as well developed a technique back then as it is now. Thus, they probably felt that while it looked a bit awkward but serviceable for the dinosaurs, it was just too terrible for a human character.
I'd love it if they remade this game.
seems like a VR game that got sent back to 98
the hand mechanic is 100% the same of surgeon simulator.
I mean, some steam games look like this
Totally agree and it's so weird seeing that.
Actually, I played the demo level of Trespasser in VR: www.trescomforum.org/viewtopic.php?f=9&t=11084
Lol honestly this game was so ahead of it's time. If vr was a thing when trespasser came out, it would be the flagship title for sure
I will never forget that boneless rubber arm...
Lol
What about a boneful one?
The best was when you wouldn't realize that your arm got snagged on something and when you looked back, your arm was 20 feet long extending all the way to whatever it got stuck on
Man, that chick must have some insane forearm strength, being able to hold a shotgun at full arms length like that, and still be accurate.
Or that AK with a drum mag.
Candieman isnt that a ppsh?
@Takoshi Hitsamaru While shooting a 12 gauge shotgun single handed is certainly not the best way to shoot one, I have shot one single handedly before & needless to say I have still got both arms working correctly. However yes, she'd certainly have a limp wrist shooting it as often as she does one handed. Might I suggest that she learn how to use 2 hands?
skipped leg day tho

"It's not about a salary, it's all about reality." liking this video just for that
Gangsta gangsta!
What's it a reference to?
Was it supposed to amuse me?
It's a reference to N.W.A. - Gangsta Gangsta. That song that was in GTA V.
Plasma Dragoon It’s also referenced in the Fort Minor song Remember The Name.
the developer secretly want this for VR ,but everyone might call him crazy.
Ghost_tea Put it on vr and add an achievement for having an accumulative time staring at boobs to solve issues.
There's a VR rebuild made in Unity can't remember where I found it but I had an early build and it played quite well.
Literally the only time I've seen Gumby arms like this. Any non VR FPS usually has Sargent Iron Arms McNevermiss handling the guns.
Spielberg and the dev team at the time actually Trespasser to be equivalent of a VR type immersive game.
This game would definitely be a VR game if that tech existed at that time.
I guess Island 359 exists, but it would actually be cool to see a mod for this that lets you play it in VR. It's begging for one.
> Allergic to THOts.
I died laughing.
Classic case of a game being ahead of its time but too unpolished for people to notice/care.
Yeah, what are other examples?
Not sure if there are any TBH. Trespasser's unique in that it was way ahead of it's time but everything it did first has since been done much better, and the game just isn't good or polished enough for it to gain a cult following.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. SoC for example. Altho it wasn't bashed as hard as tresspasser was at the time.
But stalker originally was supposed be more than we got in release.
It was also a power hog back in its day. My 1998 computer would crash so often, I had to abandon it for a couple of years. Literally ahead of its time, only computers from the future could handle it.
We would have never gotten released if the publisher hasn't amde them release what they had
Dude you are officially the best Game reviewer after releasing a review on this gem and also other rare old games. When I was a kid I built my first PC with a Celeron and Voodoo card and bought this game at STAPLES (MY FIRST EVER GAME PURCHASE) . Thank you! I was drinking ice tea a min ago and almost spit it out when your TRESPASSER video popped up on my RUclips page. I can't stand over dramatic game reviewers and one that only focus on brand new games or COD garbage. You rock!
Check out Lazy Game Reviews then! He’s one of the most relaxing reviewers I’ve ever watched.
It's like it has the controls of VR shooter, 10 years before they were a thing.
Nah, man, you can see a scientist playing Beat Saber on the first Jurassic Park
This comment made me realize tresspaser would be great in vr
amendoca himself it’s Half Life: Alyx if you only had a GT 730 to play it
Wayy more than 10 years. Like 16 years
I played half life Alyx and this game immediately came to my mind. Female protagonist, ammunition and health displayed on her body, speaks to herself, hear narrator voice, using hands to physically move or use objects and so on. I'm wondering if any of these developers ended up at Valve.
"She has arm strength of elderly woman"
*shoots AK 1 handed at full auto*
Yea, pick one.
No.
It's both.
She has spaghetti arms like Stretch Armstrong
But also has strong arms during certain situations s like holding guns and items
Clearly you haven’t spent time around the right elderly women.

This was a VR game before there was consumer VR. Even the developers did not know that this was a VR game. Back in the day, Sunny Jim, I wished I had a glove or some thing to control this awesome game.
I decided to take up the job of a doctor after seeing how easy it is to monitor patient health in this video. Looks like the kind of game that would be perfect for a VR remake. Of course they have to keep that glorious "health".

“Boobs, Guns & Dinosaurs”
Sounds like my kind of game
booby-saurus!
This game used to fascinate me. How many other FPS games felt like an island you could just explore? Half Life 2 felt linear in comparison! Was it better? Not technically, but there was a weird unique atmosphere to Trespasser.
Robinson's Requem, Deus (not Ex), to name some.
Robinson's Requiem, yes! You sir/madam are the man/woman. I didn't think anyone else remembered this game.
True! But even Deus Ex had a sequel which felt more confined. I actually LOVED Human Revolution, but it wasn't as open world (which was fine, just not like the original game)
Another game that comes to mind is S.T.A.L.K.E.R. You really felt like the whole world was open to explore :)
But half life 2 was fucking good.
Far Cry 1 wasn't open world
however it had a few areas where you could choose different tracks.
Open world Far Cry was more since the second title or if you take Crysis which are sort of open world FPS
She can throw heavy boxes and wield 12ga shotguns and AK's with one hand without shouldering them. But she can't walk up a slight incline.

Imagine a new trespasser like Resident Evil 7/Alien Isolation...
So. Much. Health. Bahahah
Unless it still has the same janky arm controls and boob health meter, it wouldn't be the same.
loom11 OH MY GOOOOOOOD!!!!!!!
Well, the VR sets have the motion controllers so the janky arm issue would most likely be solved by that alone.
or like far cry!
Imagine this health "check" in 2018
Everyone would go nuts, New York Times would write a six pages article about it

In the old Half-Life 2 developer blogs, they did reference this game directly when talking about the physics in HL2. They were clearly inspired by Trespasser.

you forgot about shooting dinosaurs gangsta style
Elijah Aitaok That counts too, but there are plenty of games that allow us to shoot dinos in different ways, especially Turok
This needs a VR version.
We need to sling the guns around and fire them without using convoluted control schemes.
Also VR health.
Big, glorious VR health.
Way too overhated, if you ask me. It was perhaps one of the most ambitious shooter from the 90's. A lot of content was cut, too! Initially you could have control of two arms IIRC they couldn't get it to work properly. Same with Full Body Awareness. Initially they wanted you to see the protagonists legs but they just couldn't nail it right, so they gave her stonking great titties to hide them.
Physics themselves were also astonishing! It was the first game to feature ragdolls, something that wouldn't be perfected (for the time anyway) until Hitman Codename 47 in 2000, and the level of physical prop interactivity wasn't rivaled until 2003's Devastation. Actually, I think the physics in Trespasser are better then Devastations! Devastation routinely had objects you picked up sinking into floors, flopping to the ground like wet sponges or even in one instance causing a game crash.
Trespasser desperately needs a rerelease. It was the Crysis of the 90's and very few, if any machines at the time could run the damn thing just right.
It was hated for good reason. What GGG failed to mention was that the game was a broken mess at launch and ran horribly on systems at the time.
What you're seeing now is some sort of.patched version.
So nothing changes - ambitious game with neat ideas get bad reception and sells poorly.
Happened then ,happening now.
SpecShadow Ambitious game that was executed badly. Go read the actual reviews of the game and see what the reviewers said about it. They praised the ambition at the time but it was still a broken mess.
+Florin lacob Payne to the Max! ;)
@ flippedoutkyrii
Trespasser was also initially planned to feature an open world, i.e. island, where the player would have been tasked with exploration to locate a means of escape, carrying items back and forth that open up new areas/buildings. Unfortunately the developers couldn't make it work in time. The linear progression, going from level to level, was a last resort, with the only alternative being cancellation of the project.
Other Trespasser trivia:
- The dinosaur AI cannot climb any stairs. They will always stop in front of the first step, even if you stand on the second one, or if there only is a single step.
- Months before the game appeared in stores, a demo was released, showcasing a map that is not part of the game's progression (though I believe it's on the disc). It had one of the more interesting puzzles in the game, where the player started on a helicopter landing platform, several meters high and lacking a staircase. The task was to create a means for descending, by use of the advanced physics. Back in the late 90s that was a fairly impressive puzzle, because nothing about it was scripted.
Regarding physical prop interactivity, I think you're wrong. Thief: The Dark Project, released in '98, had a comparable amount of possible interaction. Unless you're referring to the interactive capabilities of the arm you controlled in Trespasser? Though I doubt that was equaled in Hitman.
This game looks a lot smoother and better than it did in AVGN's review of it.
Yeah, AVGN has fucked it up for himself when he decided to play the game in it's original form. You ABSOLUTELY have do play the patched version, it's a pretty awesome game that way.
@@kosztaz87 the whole point of AVGN is to take you back to the past. Meaning he plays the OG versions of the games and reviews it how it was originally intended.
@@kosztaz87 When I played this game back on a 2003 PC, it ran similar to AVGN’s review. I don’t even think the patch existed back then
Nice to see someone cut Trespasser some slack, it really is a groundbreaking piece of tech, even if the game built on it has many problems.
Even with all its flaws this game seems like it was certainly ahead of its time. I'm keen as a bean to give it a go.
Ghost81 The game’s main issue was it was simply too ambitious for the tech available at the time. If this game was remade in the CryEngine or something with all the bugs and weird controls fixed, I’d buy it in a heartbeat.
Sadly it would never, ever be made today: no way anyone would fund this kind of tentative design when companies have a pretty good idea of what to do in order to sell. Unless it was crowdfunded, I suppose.
Lol
This Game's HUD reminds me a bit about how Peter Jackson's King Kong had done it. Like, No Ammo Counter, Jack saying how many bullets are left in the clip, Etc.
I remember an actual ammo count in that game, am i missing something?
You could have it on or off, there was a setting for it.
It was an unlockable and cheat. As far as I remember
This game deserves a good remake and I hope they can keep that health system
This game looks quite advanced for its time. The map is huge, you've got a long draw distance, realistic physics, etc. Fabien Sanglard's article gives an insight into the inner workings and the development of the game.
Really needs a dev to take another crack at it, something like Alien Isolation but with Dinos would be perfect. Huge levels, focus on exploration and traversal and avoidance of the various carnivores would be really rad.
And boob health.
I watch your reviews everytime they come out and i can remember a time when no one gave a shit about older games. I love it. Good stuff man!
Doom + "Dat Health Meter" = Perfect FPS
Heh heh i guess u could call it a "ammo rack"
Are you sure your health bar isnt how bountiful your chest is?
Awesome summary at the end, "Cleavage, big guns, and dinosaurs. What's not to love?"
This would be a gem in VR with some AI tweeks
I can already think of 2 *HUGE* reasons VR would work...

Yeah the narration was amazing especially paired with the music. I really love this game. (:
Do you also have to check for lumps ? Heh......no ?
I remember asking you to review this game a long time ago, so glad you finally managed to make it run! What this game wanted to achieve is amazing, too bad the technology sucked like lamprey fish at that time :/
Thanks, mate :)
Man, your channel is awesome, I'm glad I found it!
Btw, I’m impressed by how the player character shoots her guns with her one arm only.
ONE freaking arm. Even she fires SPAS shotgun like lever-action’n stuff.
She must have had jacked up her arm muscles with Dino DNA...

fantastic work Ggg i love jurassic park since i was a kid good job on the review makes me want to play the game now
She calls it a 'clip' instead of a 'magazine'! *TRIGGERED*
garreswe thank you, she’s a dumbass.
I remember back than reading in a Magazine about the Game, they wanted to make the whole Ecosystem and Dinosaurs accurate, they wanted them to live their daily Life in that Island.
So they aimed to have some kind of open World with realistic physics.
For that Time, the Goal was to high and it came out like that.
The Handling of everything could be cool in a VR Game.
LOL I just noticed the extra "g" in GGGMANLIVES , always looked like it said GG with two not three, and Ive been subbed for three years, freaky and very dyyslexic

I DONT GET IT
What the FFAWK is a Crouch JUMP? *Proceeds to get stuck at a simple jumping puzzle for an hour and then figures that the crouch jumping is a god damned bug and that the indie devs are incompetent*
Don't say his name you fool
This game looks like an under rated gem. DSP wouldn't do it justice. He'd ask for his fans to vote on it by donating to his PayMeTones and then quit it 5 minutes into his playthough saying it wasn't getting enough attention (tips, bits & cheers). After which there'd be a whole lot of snorting, crying & complaining about bugged game mechanics & "I didn't know WAT to do d00d! This game doesn't explain anything at all!" About the only thing Phil would enjoy in it is glaring down at the health system & making "jokes" about it.
Ahhh, memorys. Trespasser was the first real game i had on my first PC. Good Times.
This game is the best worst game I've played. The goofy-ass dinosaurs just never cease to be funny. My favourite thing for the longest time was to position myself so that there's a car wreck between me and an angry T-Rex. The spastic lizard would trip on the car and fall flat on his stomach, often getting his rubbery feet stuck in the wreck so that the only thing he can really do is lie on his belly and roar at me.
Luukeksi FrozenHillbillyEurotrash I think theyve patched it enough to make the dinosaurs not so...remedial. But yeah I don't think theyll be earning any sort of high school diplomas anytime soon though.
Excellent review gggmanlives. Easily one of my favorite games of all time. Trespasser has had such an impact on my interest in game development in gaming in general
Ahhhh Totally Accurate Battlegrounds' alpha testing
Everyone should check out the Research Indicates playthrough of Trespasser, its more of a documentary of the game and hands down to this day one of the best lps ever.
Honestly i wish more games played like this. Very unique and grounded, especially when using handguns. Sort of like a first person version of the original resident evil
Yaaay thanks very much GmanLives, i played many hours back in 2002 now i get to enjoy it again
This game was incredible at the time and made me appreciate just how far ahead PC was in terms of physics. This game will always be remembered by me as having god like audio Foley, if you aren't carrying a gun you can effectively slap things with your hand...Slap a dead dinosaur on the neck (thin meat) and then on its belly (fat thick meat) and it the slap noise was different. That attention to audio detail left me and best friend simply mind blown at the time! Thanks for bringing back some very fond memories of the golden age of PC gaming.
I'm a simple man, I see a video title that contains "boobs, guns and dinosaurs" and I click on it.
The movement honestly seems like she's in a wheelchair or something with how her left arm around and how we never see much else. It's very weird, honestly. Seems like an interesting little piece of history though, but only really for fans of the source material.
The titty health system really needs to become standard I think, that's immersive! MXR would 100% approve lol. You can see tit is way ahead of tits time all around, many unique features abound. It's got some amazing character modeling and assets. Too bad we don't get a look at the ASSets amiright??? Though I think it could be improved, the tattoo might still be too much HUD. Just make their actual size represent your health; they get smaller as your health goes down.
Seriously though, this is a very interesting and unique find from 1998, and it really does look way ahead of its time in many concepts. Physics, animation, storytelling, immersion. This would be a pretty cool idea to reboot/remake as a modern game, but I'm sure licensing, especially figuring out what to do about voice-overs, would make that more trouble that it's worth. Maybe a fan project will recreate this in UE4 or Unity. The game seems simple enough that someone with a little bit of skill could probably do that fairly easily.
EDIT: Apparently there IS a remake project, looks like it's been going on for many years, but fan projects are always uncertain. Let's keep our fingers crossed!

We need more dinosaur games today.
Turok RENASTER
with boobs too!
Nah we have a short supply of zombie games.
Fun Fact: This game is the first registered use of the so called "ragdoll physics", being followed by Hitman: Codename 47 only two years later. Your channel is amazing, and I really think this is only the beggining of your channel's success, Keep it up!
Am I the only one who thinks this would be better if it was a be VR game
I can remember some last-page rant article in a game magazine critcising this, among other games, for ones that could have been amazing but were ruined by stupid decisions. In this case it had a lot of unique (for the time) elements, like physics objects, an "open world" and you could see your character's body, instead of being a floating camera with a gun attached. But they ruined it with the overambitious and misguidedly "realistic" virtual arm. Much like a comedy game I saw once which was a literal "walking simulator", you had to consciously control all four of a character's major leg muscles, which doesn't happen in real life.

Thank ye, kind sir
now those mamories bring back memories!
This game definitely feels like it should've been in VR. In fact, I'm surprised nobody's tried a VR remake (with the actual IP or a spiritual remake) of Trespasser, a VR dinosaur shooter would be all kinds of amazing and also fucking terrifying.
Soo... This is just Half-Life Alyx without VR
I think this game deserves a remake on either the unreal 4 or the Cryengine. They could include the option to have it in VR and have survival mechanics simile to Stalker and The Long Dark
otakuman23 They tried to. It never took off. Fan remake anyway, a proper remake by a studio will likely not happen.
I remember playing this game as a kid and my parents getting upset at the... health mechanic, until they realized I didn't understand what I was looking at or know how awesome... health... was yet
Checking your health is really important
im so glad you made this video because when I was little, I saw a game play video of this game. I didnt remember the title of the video or even what the games name was so I was wondering for years what the fuck this was.
My head Up Here Display, groovy!
I loved this game. The limited guns, the dinos animations, the physics... I have my bias towards it and also I was a stupid kid when I first played it, but I still think it's good.
4:02 had to pause to really take in the health aspect
This game should be remastered for VR.
that bit emphasizing the "importance" of checking your health, my breakfast is sitting on the floor now
no it isnt
Now we only need a proper Dino Crisis remaster, then all the awesome Dino games of my childhood would be finally complete again.
This game looks perfect for VR
omg when the raptors charge at you, that is FUCKING TERRIFYING
Did Cr1tikal play this?
Dr White yes
This game was incredibly hyped. This is the game that inspired Half-life 2 to use a physics engine! This was the next big step in realism. It's the first game with ragdolls. It's one of the first games with large outdoor, textured environments. Enemies that have internal motivations and generate their movement entirely procedurally with no canned animations (in the release, everything except passive herbivores is set permanently to be aggressive). It was supposed to have two independently controllable, articulated hands that where physically there in the world that somehow felt natural to use (yeah, they had to scale that back to just the one hand for obvious reasons). A first person shooter just has the abstraction of a gun comming out of the player's eye level that does not physically interact with anything in the world; this was going to be an independent thing you could grab and handle. The game would do away with silly abstractions like a HUD.
The game is built out of systems ontop of systems all interacting in chaotic and unpredictable ways without any thought to playability. It is a sincere attempt to make what we now in 2018 consider pretty much impossible outside of VR and still not particularly easy. It's both revolutionary and a catastrophic failure; it is hilariously broken in the best way possible.
4:00 Is what you came here for.
