I think he was been a gentleman about it. Since, I am guessing, that the rest of the people there don't speak German. He probably thought it would be rude to speak in his mother tongue when everyone else would not understand. His thing about, "Last time didn't work", probably was about that he did answer in German once before to only one person but everyone else had no idea what he said. So he didn't want history to repeat.
