To decry an entire group of people and amp others up for civil war in the name of political ideology is the exact opposite of what anyone Should want in modern society. This is the type of nonsensical sht that caused the civil war in the United States. Dumb poor farmers with no education being lied to by people who are so sure in their political beliefs that they'd kill other people for them.
Even better, this is the type of sht that caused us to intervene in the Middle East so frequently throughout history. It resulted in the ruination of a nation and the rise of extremist terror the likes of which we hadn't seen prior(talking overall interference not just the War on Terror).
If we want to co-exist in this world then everyone needs to understand that each person has their own interpretation and understanding of events/culture. So the idea that some people are "wrong" so you can castigate or destroy them, instead of attempting to bridge the gap and offer a more nuanced position to them is ridiculous and inhumane. Not to mention extremely authoritarian/fascistic.
It's bad when people who don't even have a fully formed brain or experience outside of school are activated in such a manner that they'd tell other people to be indignant or violent towards others for having a political affiliation. The only caveat being if the political party they affiliate with is literally killing, calling for killing or otherwise eroding the sanctity of the nation and the people within it. Even then it would be based on the core tenants that created the nation to begin with.
What this person refuses to acknowledge is that outside of the political/online sphere most people are just normal people who don't want others to be oppressed, killed or have any wrong done to them. They simply want a nice life for themselves and the ones they love that falls within their frame of moral understanding(i.e Christians probably want to be able to believe in God openly within their community or Transgender people might want to be seen as a normal person regardless of their gender situation). So the idea that Destiny states where the grounds on which we label people needs to be a lot more strict, such that the bad people are known as bad people so that normal folks don't get punished for actions they either don't condone or even know about, logically follows.

Understanding it's power in delivery as well as it's power within your own ideals, with regards to self awareness and understanding your own reactions to the power of free speech is a good start to conversation, debate, argument, call it what you want? But just grasping this simple concept of the double edged sword of free speech can be beneficial for creating inner integrity of that which you might stand for,as you are looking at things from both the perspective of yourself and of others.

Leftie: "I mean, they might think that, right, and I -"
Destiny: "Of course they might think that, that's-"
Leftie: "Yea, so i would appeal to some overly - overriding um like, moral thing that we should have"
Destiny: "You can't appeal to overriding morals - meta morals now when you were telling me earlier that the way to resolve disputes is through violent confrontation"
Destiny: "You can't appeal to the moral to the meta narrative when it suits you and then toss it aside as soon as you're ready to fight"
Leftie: "No No No No No I would appeal to that, right, if it's like convenient, right, i would try to have a, i would try to like promote a meta, like, moral thing that is conducive to like my political ends, right, but I wouldn't rule the possibility of going outside of that if it was necessary to enact, like, the political structure"
So in this 60 ish seconds this person agreed that they think that their world view, which is conductive to their political ends / agenda is the correct one and they would appeal to it when it suits them, and if people disagree, welp, violent confrontation it is, per their own words after Destiny made the "Christian and Muslim get into an ethical disagreement and therefore have to appeal to the state to resolve that disagreement" metaphor.
This has been an hour and a half of Destiny and this leftie going in circles about how this person thinks their world view is right and anyone who disagrees causes harm, ergo they should be excised from society, ergo, as much of a meme as it's grown to be, no action against them is wrong.
And then not to mention after going in circles so much and basically not backing a single position or opinion they hold, they flee the discussion and try to misrepresent his position about de-platforming (again) on the way out, which is what i think caused Destiny to become annoyed and that's why he basically he TL;DW'd this whole video in the last like 4 minutes.
Like 1 person said in the chat I think somewhere in the middle of the video, i genuinely hope this person is like 16 or younger for my own sanity, because we are doomed if this is how a growing number of people in their 20's actually think.

The disagreement is over Destiny's position that this sort of violence is always bad, not that it would be impractical. The kid already said that he doesn't advocate for it if he thinks it would fail.
"Overriding meta morals" seems like BS. Few "believe" in the current government or law, we just accept it because the system we live under can accommodate our basic material needs. If a subversive element exists then you can excise it and return to business as usual. Monarchists are a rare sight, I wonder why that is. Maybe that disagreement was resolved in a violent manner and it didn't mean a permanent breakdown of society. Maybe other people can be treated in this way.
I disagree with the guy's politics, I just haven't seen a good retort to "might makes right" by Destiny or any commentors. My position is that if violence is to my benefit I'll do it, and if it isn't I will pretend to be a principled pacifist.

      > "I disagree with Destiny proposing possible practical issues (what if the opposition think they're right, etc) as retorts to the idea of having political violence/repression as a tool in your political toolbelt."
I'm sorry, but this is just flat out wrong. Destiny's not proposing practical issues as retorts to having political violence as a tool in your toolbelt, he's proposing it because when they were talking about de-platforming conservatives, when Destiny said:
"But there are a lot of people that would argue that if we could de-platform from them from as many places as possible that that would lead to good"
this kid agreed, and when Destiny pushed him on that and just asked:
"But then if they think the same about you how do you resolve that disagreement?"
the kid just says "some of us are right and some of us are wrong." (which, if you read between the lines, basically means I'm right and they are wrong)
and when Destiny asked, well, how do you figure out who's right or wrong, the kid basically said:
"Well, if I believe someone is wrong I can appeal to like inter-subjective ideas about like what morality is or should be."
This doesn't work because, in politics, everyone believes they are correct in supporting the causes they support. It doesn't matter if they are objectively right or not, *subjectively, or from their own perspective, they're right, and by this kid's logic, just because I, from my own perspective, or *subjectively think that the causes you support are causing harm, I should be able to get you expelled if you are still in school, fired if you have a job, and basically have your name be dragged through the mud, because, from my perspective I was right in doing so.
      > ""Overriding meta morals" seems like BS. Few "believe" in the current government or law, we just accept it because the system we live under can accommodate our basic material needs."
I'll just quote Destiny here (the Christian / Muslim hypothetical) :
"If a Muslim and a Christian get into an ethical disagreement with one another then they need to appeal to the state to resolve that disagreement. That's where my justification comes from for why we have to have a meta rule system or meta-narrative that's why law exists it's because sometimes two people will have a moral disagreement and the way that it's settled is to look to the law." (Now to preface this, I don't believe this is his ****only**** justification as to why law exists.)
And i do agree that this third system, as bad as you might think it is, needs to exist because if it didn't, everyone would be free to enact whatever violence they deem is correct on anyone they disagree with about anything.
And as a last thing, I think (and I might be wrong here) that you misunderstood Destiny about "Overriding meta morals". While sure, you might have some people that would say "Oh, the law is 100% correct in every case possible with no exceptions" I don't think that Destiny agrees with that, or, frankly, most of the world's population. I think that Destiny would more agree with something along the lines of
"Not all overriding meta morals are law, but basically all law is overriding meta morals." At least when it came to most regular people. (I'm not talking about corporate law and all the bullshit that goes on in there, just the law that affects the citizens.)
Basically those overriding meta-morals would be something along the lines of: "You can't just kill people that disagree with you, you can't steal things that aren't yours, etc...", which is law already but as stated above, that's fine.
If you got this far, thanks for reading all of this, and I apologize that this came out as long as it did, I'm running on basically no sleep for the last couple of days, and English isn't my main language, so this could've probably been written more concisely, and most likely without some grammatical errors I overlooked.

No moral disagreements are settled by the state. When legal matters are decided, there is nothing about the court that would change anyone's mind on the topic of morality. It doesn't resolve the disagreement, only the conflict. Laws and the state exist as a practical necessity that is imposed on people. Like all political matters, it has no inherent connection to morality.
States resolve conflicts between domestic parties, they have no effect on morality. When people say "you can't just steal" they are either making a practical observation about it being an ill-advised discision or a moral statement detached from the law. If someone agrees with the law it is by coincidence.

    • @aylio3745
      @aylio3745 Год назад

To be fair though Destiny's pushback early on was very weak. He essentially argued that if doing the right thing unfairly favors one political side then it shouldn't be done. For example, the way he argued it implied that if giving women the rights to vote was favored by one party because the end result would favor that party much more than the other in the same way abolishing the electoral college would or Puerto Rico statehood would, each increase democratic representation, then he would object to it. That would be an insane argument.

@@aylio3745 I'm pretty sure he meant that the outcome could be good, but that that doesn't mean your personal motives for achieving it are good too. As an example of how people use their influence in politics these days.

    • @aylio3745
      @aylio3745 Год назад

@@nighthawk2548 I recall the context being at this stage one of authoritarian power politics. Essentially one about the ends not justifying the means. Except in this case the means he brought up would be good ends in and of themselves if you value a strong democracy as Destiny does. If giving Puerto Rico democratic representation via statehood is being proposed to help democrats then so be it. The ends don't justify the means argument is a morally right argument but this was a bad/weak context to use it. If all he wanted to do was call out the motivations as you said, cause that is where it eventually went for a bit, I think he should find a better way to do it. I may follow back later after a relisten. I could have heard the argument wrong but it was shocking to hear him to bundle all of those examples in with his argument against the arguments behind packing the courts and support for raw power politics.

This one was hard. This was basically a long argument about people not being able to agree universally on a moral framework. And the opponents default position was basically, "I think I have good reasons for my opinion, therefore I am right and we can enact violence on those who disagree because they are wrong because them having an opinion opposite of mine is violence towards me."

Its very simple, some people have simply never been punched in the face, and get weird ideas about violence, and their capacity to inflict it, and MORE importantly, their ability to absorb it, people like this don't need to experience hard violence, but a solid punch in the face is very grounding and helps you realize your limits, its not even the pain that they need to experience, its the lack of ability to respond back.
